  • At 17, running for the bus and buttoning my band uniform, I rounded the corner and nearly knocked John Ward over. He caught me, steadied me, and said "You have time. You'll make it." The bowl game that night is a dim memory. John Ward's kind smile is still clear, 40 years later.

  • John Ward you don't know how much we miss hearing your voice. Enjoy retirement my friend you've earned it.

  • Phil still had to read from a script to thank him for his decades of service and hard work. Who's the real Volunteer? Phil is pathetic.

  • 4 more days till its football time in tennessee!

  • john loved his job. Therefore he never considered it work. He was the hardest working man in Knoxville. John made the Vol network what it is today, no doubt.

  • Even though I didn't grow up listening to John Ward...and even if I did, I wouldn't have remembered him...im young enough that I wouldnt remember him, anyway I obviously can tell he meant so much to tennessee, but i agree w/snoopy834, this video is painful to watch. The vols now are struggling and it hurts to see them the way they are...I wouldve loved to grow up listening to him...but i was born in late 93...so yeah lol. GO VOLS!!

  • @2012oceanlover Yeah, they may be struggling now...but there are plenty of reasons as to why we are. Such as our 2010-2011 team has mainly young starters and a new coach. I think we'll recover, we have one of the strongest traditions in football...it's a legacy. And yeah, John Ward meant a lot...I was born in '88 and he was always the voice of the vols for me. We had a tough year this year, but we are only going to make those young players into experienced veterans.

  • These Video are simply painful to watch. Anything of the past right now is just misery to watch. You see the pride the passion and all the memories off the past and then you look at what is now Tennessee football and really they are no words to explain it. It is just sad.

  • John Ward was the man. I had a friend who went to Vandy and loathed the Vols, but even he admitted John Ward was a great announcer. There was nothing like being by a radio on a crisp fall afternoon, and hearing John Ward say, "It's football time in Tennessee!"

  • John Ward- The voice of my childhood!

  • Talk about someone who could paint a picture.... I just hate myself for not being older so I could listen to even more of John Ward..... God Bless John Ward.... ALWAYS going to be the Voice of the Vols!!!!!

  • 1:24 "Will he go all the way? Yessir. " One of the greatest calls ever. For whatever reason, I just love that.

  • i am a razorback through and through, but john ward was a class act and definitely one of the greatest college football announcers ever. his calls were signature moments and will live on forever.

  • How many times did we turn down the TV volume and turn up the radio to hear John? Bob Kessling aint too bad but there will never be another John Ward.

    "Its Goooooood!!!"

  • There will NEVER be another voice like that of John Ward!

  • always listened to the radio while watching games on tv just to hear ward.

  • Great video!! Got tears watching that. Go Vols 4ever

  • As a Tide fan I can't stand the Viles, but John Ward was class all the way. They sure don't make them like him anymore.

  • the reason i became a vol fan..1990!!!

  • This is a great video! This is what makes me bleed orange. And how could any Tennessean not love John Ward and UT? Go Big Orange!

  • I miss him still..Thank you John.

  • Thank you for this Video. John Ward was the best announcer ever, and it is nice to see this tribute.
