This is definitely awesome! I'm a great fan of Brian and Queen in general. And although I miss Freddy I think Tom Chaplin did such a great performance with this song! Absolutely amazing!
again incredible!!!i'm talking from france!!! my husband is o k !!only tomm must sing freddie's songs only!!!it's like if freddie was not die!!!many thanks for tom and the other of the group queen!!!!love!!!
A very impressive performance. I notice he's obviously watched the video and/or listened to the track a lot. Trying to do Fred's harmonies and vocals at the same time. Reminds me of myself, constantly listening to the works and watching the video following Fred's moves. Wonderful!
I hear a similarity to Freddy's voice & this was a decent performance that would please Freddy, but think Adam Lambert would have been Freddy's choice to pick up the torch. They had much in common, both being theatrical and Adam has the stage presence that Freddy would love and as Roger recently said, "the BEST vocal range I've ever heard. Brian said, "Adam Lambert will have jaws dropping around the world! He's really good!"I respect their ears and years of experience. They are after all, Queen
Tom sings OK, but why would he perform with Queen wearing torn jeans and a T-shirt? Freddie was all about performance and presentation, just good singing wasn't enough for him ... he would turn over in his grave at the lack of style ...
@karen95835 WTF, are you serious? He's a singer, not a model. If he was dressing like Freddie, then people would criticize him for wanting to copy Freddie. He had to cover the song, not to imitate Freddie. And at least he dresses way better than Adam Lambert (sorry, but I had to say that).
my favorite parts ----1:09-1:14 and 4:56-5:13 he's an amzing singer so everyone stop with the freddy mercury stuff yeah he was a great singer but you gotta look at different options. keane rules
He does a very good job of this. He doesn't have to have the song tuned down or anything, he sings it (phrasing and note wise) exactly as Freddie did, but doesn't sound like a Freddie wannabe or anything.
I hope, that Lady gaga and our other playback-stars can hear this!!!!!!! I think, Tom Chaplin is one of the greatest singers today, if isn't the GREATEST!
@RocketQueenx18 There is three possibles: they have no hearing, or simply not sense of music, or... they are other (and of course weaker!) singers, who are envious for Tom!:D
F***ing Incredible, Tom Chaplin absolutely blew me away here, I knew he was fabulous, but he just honoured our beloved Freddy so well here. You can see the joy in his face too, he's such a big fan, and he did an AMAZING version.
Tom Chaplin rocks this. Just covers the song with hints of his own vocal flair, but doesn't destroy it with absurd levels of vibrato and vocal gymnastic, like Adam Lambert did when he sang with Queen. Marc Martel does a phenomenal job covering Queen as well.. can't wait for the Queen Extravaganza tour!
@TruthSurge I see you are a Queen fan...as am I. Back in the day, I had a grand piano, and I loved playing Bohemian Rhapsody. I never heard of this Tom guy. But he does a great job! And yes, Freddie would be proud and Brian did a great job! I am glad to see that he has the same guitar...at least retained the unique sound. ; )
@FishHeadSalad ya, man, I'm a huge Queen fan ever since I heard Bohemian Rhapsody and I bought the Night at the Opera album. Totally hooked. Brian May was one of those (is?) geniuses who always approached it from the thinker's angle. Almost never hear a bunch of noise out of him. Pure notes and melodies. Yeah, I was very impressed with Tom's performance in this vid. He just walked out and nailed it from the first note. Takes some balls and skill to do that, I say.
@FishHeadSalad dude? I thought you were a Queen fan! hahahahha Of course it was Roger Taylor. But I guess John Deacon isn't into performing anymore. :(
@TruthSurge Hi T..I only got a glimps! ; ) I thought it was him...just needed verification! Thanx! As to JD...like most bassists, they seem to get erased somehow. : (
@FishHeadSalad I'm not a FANatic, though, so I don't know if anything ever happened between him and the others or why he doesn't want to "go on with the show" but to each their own. I can imagine Brian and Roger were torn about doing anything called "Queen" after Freddie died because jebus... Freddie was the face and voice of Queen. Almost not possible w/o him BUT I'm glad they played out some more. And they were smart enough to NOT try replacing Freddie with anyone (unlike journey et al).
@TruthSurge the sad thing to me is ... that ...I think they are going to "replace" Mercury...and go on with the show...so to speak. (from what I have heard). If they do...I hope it is with this Mike guy! Off the cuff, I cannot think of the actual guy that "Queen" is planning on touring with as their vocal front. I do remember that it is someone we have both heard of! Total brain fart! Cannot think of his name!
@FishHeadSalad This Chaplin fellow did a great job on this song. They did tour as Queen and uh... the guy in bad company... Paul Rogers. so, I don't know. A band that was iconic for say 20 years then loses it's front man is no longer that band. period. end of story. :)
@FishHeadSalad yep. When VH split and Hagar joined.. it was no longer VH to me BUT I did like some of the songs but to me, VH kind of shot their musical wad on the first 2 albums with a 2nd wind on Fair Warning. So, it was magical on the first 2 and then kind of wilted after that, IMO.
@TruthSurge I totally forgot about Fair Warning. So I had to go look through my VH collection. I found it. It was between Dread Zeppelin and GNR...go figure! But, here is my VH collection: VH1 and 2, Diver Down, and 1984.
@FishHeadSalad 1984.... popular but not great. Diver Down had some good guitar on it. But nothing VH ever did IMOOOOOO rivals the first 2. Nothing. Eddie was on freakin fire and his chops were at the peak and not just that but the creativity. Every damn song was the bomb. The intro to women in love... eruption, spanish fly.... he only had hints of this on later albums. Top Jimmy w/alt tuning and octave taps, cathedral, but we all get old. hahaha
@TruthSurge I have been thinking about this for a while and I did come up with one band that changed lead singers that I did enjoy just as much as the original. Wanna take a guess? Clue: old school... circa 1980.
@FishHeadSalad well, now, there ARE times when you might like a new singer more. I know this might seem to violate my rule hehehhe but I actually like Dio as a singer more than Ozzy. So, Sabbath with Dio was really great. Sabbath with Ozzy was... Sabbath. So, there's one band that I would say didn't follow my rule BECAUSE they were not trying to find an Ozzy-soundalike (like Journey did getting this Philipino kid who sounds a lot like Steve Perry but not as good hahah).
@FishHeadSalad man, I just watched someone's camcorder filming of this on another vid. this one is TOTALLY remixed in a studio after the fact. watch this watch?v=FDo01krK8C8&feature=related and notice how Brian kind of blows the end of the solo and he's searching for the chord to play cuz he's lost the key in his mind. You don't hear ANY of that in this one AND they overdubbed a sustained not and cut away from him here to fix it. Auto-tuned that last vocal note it seems.
the song's sung by Freedy had THUNDER LIGHTS! and THE HEAT OF FIRE! around .... FREDDY! THE KING! of this QUEEN never die! long live FREDDY MERCURY! you have a well deserved a place in eternity!
This performance is simply awe-inspiring, it takes my breath away every time I watch it. Of course, Freddie will always stay unparalleled. But Tom is amazing here, his voice gives me goosebumps.
i've always thought that Chaplin's voice had alot of Freddy Mercury influence in it. He's one of the best singers today, he's the only one I can see filling in for Freddy.
this is totally stunnig guys and ben chapman sings this very like Freddie did?Freddie would love this i'm sure?God bless u guys Roger and brian?PS get that lazy git Deacon oot his bed and on the road?LOL XX
@shandling1 Ummmm........... It's TOM CHAPLIN, remember that name, amazing singer, his vocal abilities know no bounds. Whatever cover song he sings is totally incredible. Keane started life as a covers band, way back when, till they started to write they're own material. They've covered U2, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys,Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles and many more. All are very true to the original but made totally unique by Tom's wonderful voice.
Flawless performance by a very sweet and humble guy. I'm really happy he did this. If anyone deserves to perform alongside Queen, it's Tom Chaplin. I LOVED this.
This was absolutely brilliant. Thoroughly amazing. What beutifule nuances Tom brought to Freddies melody with his airy falsetto at 1:46. Brian was dead wrong though, he performed this with Queen in Live in Rio 84, or did I misunderstand our hero. Doesnt matter though, they are all just fantastic. i could go on and on about this....
3 people have a hard life and don't know how to cope! How can anyone not like this? I think this was just plain beautiful, being a hardcore Queen and Keane fan.
Hey I never thought Tom would have the voice pallete pretty similar to Freddie in certain notes. Definitively he would honor Freddie pretty good, hoping to hear more of this.
@crevette38390 -you are agree with me?sorry I cant spech french!!!! only I few words in english...Im from Argentina...here LOVES KEANE...and I think Tom Chaplin IS SO SEXYYYYYYYYY.:) have a nice day!!!!
@crevette38390 -you are a very nice to write me in english ,thanks!I totally agree with you they are amazing!!!!! and Tom Chaplin OMG is perfect!!!!!!! I love him!!!! nice to meet you!
"Tom will be performing at the private party to be held at the Savoy Hotel in London, to celebrate the 65th birthday of Freddie Mercury. There are two possibilities for the song … ‘Love of my life’ or ‘Tie Your Mother Down’".
OK, I apologize. Irrelevant was a rather hostile term, that was poorly chosen.I meant no disrespect to the band Keane! I have checked a few youtube vids, and he seems like a very talented and well respected artist.
but,
1.) Which band is an already epic legend in the world of Rock, along the likes of Zeppelin,Beatles,Kiss, etc, and will go down in the books as one of the greatest bands in history?
2.) Ask a thousand people, which band they would rather join..Queen or Keane.
@justkeepinitrealyo Its ironic that you picked those South American bands because KEane r huge in Mexico & Argentina just like Queen were. Paul Mcartney is a fan of theirs. he lead singer of Keane bumped into him buying their first album (Paul did live near to where KEane come from-Sussex.) They did have a no.4 album in USA.They were on brink of being big in the USA when Tom hd to go rehab. They are the best band I hav seen live due to the fact that Tom singing is brill. glad u listened tothem.
@justkeepinitrealyo "Ask a thousand people, which band they would rather join..Queen or Keane". I don't think that can be applied here. Tom isn't some random singer who can choose what band to be in. He ALREADY is in Keane. He's been in Keane since 1997 and the members have known each other almost since they were born. Anyway, I don't think you can compare Keane to Queen, Led Zeppelin or The Beatles, they're still young and they have only released 3 albums. Can't Tom sing for Keane AND Queen?
@u2v3e I love you + your comment...actually tearing up here. I hate how the press ect always pin the 'new Beatles' title on new ecxiting bands. Ive been following Keane since 2003 + i know that they are immensley tallented + have more exciting ideas to come....i love The Beatles + Queen, please let them be The Beatles + Queen + let every other band be who they are...new + very aware of the greatness that went before....You can see how in awe of Queen Tom Chaplin is....that makes me happy. xxxx
Justkeepintrealyo - is a band irrelevant because you haven't heard of them? Also England (and I am not originally from England) produces some of the best pop music in the world. Tim from KEane Writes some of the most beautiful songs going - and Tom sings them just as well as Freddie (in my opinion). You need to check them out and all four of their albums are good. You might not like them but they are undoubtedly very talented.
Look. We are talking apples and oranges here. All I am saying is that...a band that has never charted a hit in the US, and that the majority of the world has never heard of, is not in the same league or category as Queen.
Maybe someday,
But for now, they are not even in the same universe.
Cafe Tacuba from Mexico, Fabulosos Cadillacs from Argentina, and Aterciopelados from Columbia are all very famous bands from their respective countries too!
I was bowled over the first time I saw this on TV. Chaplin does a fantastic job at this song. I disagree with all the comments against Paul Rogers though. He may not sound like, or as good as Freddie but he still has one of the most powerful and respected voices in rock.
I really love Queen, and it's *inspiring* how long they've stuck together. I didn't listen to Queen + Paul Rogers, but I would definitely like to see a Queen + Tom Chaplin album.
whow. i`ve got tears in my eyes now, how stunning, how amazing! tom made freddy come alive again for the length of that song, incredible! what an amazing singer and performer!
Please, if you've go doubts about Tom's abilities, can you actually check him out first? Listen to Keane songs to hear if he can manage other styles, find live clips to see if he can cope live for a long time. Actually get an INFORMED opinion, nt just make an assumption. It's impossible to really know if he could handle Queen's whole repertoire without putting him to it, but he's sung 2 other Queen songs (that I know of) pretty well, so that should be a fairly good indication.
And now I remember an argument I had back in 2004 with someone saying that Chris Martin is a better vocalist/frontman than the "fat dude from Keane". FAIL.
@u2v3e Yeah, I've heard that argument made as well and never understood how anyone who had really listened to both Coldplay and Keane could think Chris Martin was a better vocalist. This performance from Tom should change anyone's mind who believes that!
@TheEngland8 what the hell is wrong with you people I love Chris Martin even though he may have nothing on Tom Chaplin after this performance which by the way makes him look like Micheal Buble i still think they could be considered on similar levels
@jonasbabe75 My comment regarding Chris Martin was not meant to be hateful or disrespectful. I think Chris Martin is a musical genius, and though Martin does have a good voice, I think Tom Chaplin's voice is much better because of Chaplin's vocal range and versatility. I love Keane and Coldplay! :)
@TheEngland8 Yeah I understand it was more of an opinion thing but I was trying to point out the fact everone always hates on Coldplay. I like Coldplay better as a band than Keane so thats why I'm saying they're better.
But I really don't get why May anounces it as "probably never played live". They done it countless times with Mercury in the eighties, plenty video's on youtube to prove that. I don't get it, like how can you forget, even if you did 704 gigs with Freddie. Anyway, it seems he forgot lol.
@LoobyLi88 I cannot filter out he means after freddie died. Anyway, not really important lol. Tom did a great job I agree, but I wouldnt go as far as saying he reincarnated freddie, but thats my opinion.
When Freddie's voice was at it's best, it was the most untouchable voice in Rock, This guy, Tom Chaplin is the closest I have ever heard to Freddie's Range and Power, and his voice in this song demonstates what an amazing singer he is. Suoerb!!!
greenogre22 with due respect Tom sings lots of breathtaking songs - they are Keane songs though not Queen. He can sing live for a whole hour and half at that standard - I've seen him live.
But think: this guy really has an incredible smooth voice and pretty good technique and has an advantage against freddie - he can use falsetto (freddie couldnt due to those damm nodules as you know).
But the timbre and strenght arent there...
For these songs (calmer ones) he's perfect but for songs like Bo Rhap (rock part), hammer to fall, the show must go on, etc i dont think he'd do as well
WOW, I was blown away when I saw this. One of the hardest Queen songs to sing and he just nailed it. Hat's off Tom, I liked you before but now I think I love you.
that was eerie! he must've really prepped or song's more his style, cos his under pressure isn't robust like freddie. in other words 1 or 2 songs could be seamless "match" of freddie or technically more polished (george on somebody to love), but not everything from dragon attack to AOBTD to it's a hard life.
Exactly, any singer can go up and choose a Queen song which best suits his voice on any given night, but try singing an entire concert with the material Mercury had to perform. I still get shivers when I hear a really good bootleg and hear how gifted he was. The powerful 80s era Freddie may be the most well known of his stage creations, but the mid 70s to late 70s he really used his voice spectacularly.
Early gigs in Boston, Hyde Park, London are phenomenal in terms of vocals.

I think this was just plain beautiful, being a hardcore Queen and Keane fan.
catcrack28 5 months ago 3
Hey I never thought Tom would have the voice pallete pretty similar to Freddie in certain notes. Definitively he would honor Freddie pretty good, hoping to hear more of this.

2.) Ask a thousand people, which band they would rather join..Queen or Keane.
justkeepinitrealyo 6 months ago
@justkeepinitrealyo Its ironic that you picked those South American bands because KEane r huge in Mexico & Argentina just like Queen were. Paul Mcartney is a fan of theirs. he lead singer of Keane bumped into him buying their first album (Paul did live near to where KEane come from-Sussex.) They did have a no.4 album in USA.They were on brink of being big in the USA when Tom hd to go rehab. They are the best band I hav seen live due to the fact that Tom singing is brill. glad u listened tothem.
hoodsxl 6 months ago
@justkeepinitrealyo "Ask a thousand people, which band they would rather join..Queen or Keane". I don't think that can be applied here. Tom isn't some random singer who can choose what band to be in. He ALREADY is in Keane. He's been in Keane since 1997 and the members have known each other almost since they were born. Anyway, I don't think you can compare Keane to Queen, Led Zeppelin or The Beatles, they're still young and they have only released 3 albums. Can't Tom sing for Keane AND Queen?
u2v3e 6 months ago 3
@u2v3e I love you + your comment...actually tearing up here. I hate how the press ect always pin the 'new Beatles' title on new ecxiting bands. Ive been following Keane since 2003 + i know that they are immensley tallented + have more exciting ideas to come....i love The Beatles + Queen, please let them be The Beatles + Queen + let every other band be who they are...new + very aware of the greatness that went before....You can see how in awe of Queen Tom Chaplin is....that makes me happy. xxxx
MsAdda1 6 months ago
Justkeepintrealyo - is a band irrelevant because you haven't heard of them? Also England (and I am not originally from England) produces some of the best pop music in the world. Tim from KEane Writes some of the most beautiful songs going - and Tom sings them just as well as Freddie (in my opinion). You need to check them out and all four of their albums are good. You might not like them but they are undoubtedly very talented.
hoodsxl 6 months ago 2
@hoodsxl : Well.LOL..YES!!
Look. We are talking apples and oranges here. All I am saying is that...a band that has never charted a hit in the US, and that the majority of the world has never heard of, is not in the same league or category as Queen.
Maybe someday,
But for now, they are not even in the same universe.
Cafe Tacuba from Mexico, Fabulosos Cadillacs from Argentina, and Aterciopelados from Columbia are all very famous bands from their respective countries too!
but still irrelevant!

I was bowled over the first time I saw this on TV. Chaplin does a fantastic job at this song. I disagree with all the comments against Paul Rogers though. He may not sound like, or as good as Freddie but he still has one of the most powerful and respected voices in rock.

flyingnanny88 8 months ago 4

FAIL.

TheEngland8 8 months ago
@u2v3e Yeah, I've heard that argument made as well and never understood how anyone who had really listened to both Coldplay and Keane could think Chris Martin was a better vocalist. This performance from Tom should change anyone's mind who believes that!
TheEngland8 8 months ago
@TheEngland8 what the hell is wrong with you people I love Chris Martin even though he may have nothing on Tom Chaplin after this performance which by the way makes him look like Micheal Buble i still think they could be considered on similar levels
jonasbabe75 8 months ago
@jonasbabe75 My comment regarding Chris Martin was not meant to be hateful or disrespectful. I think Chris Martin is a musical genius, and though Martin does have a good voice, I think Tom Chaplin's voice is much better because of Chaplin's vocal range and versatility. I love Keane and Coldplay! :)
TheEngland8 8 months ago
@TheEngland8 Yeah I understand it was more of an opinion thing but I was trying to point out the fact everone always hates on Coldplay. I like Coldplay better as a band than Keane so thats why I'm saying they're better.
jonasbabe75 8 months ago
Okay, Keane and Queen are my two favorite bands in the entire world. This is literally my dream come true. I -3 FREDDIE AND TOM SO VERY MUCH!!
ThePhantom4ever 8 months ago 2
But I really don't get why May anounces it as "probably never played live". They done it countless times with Mercury in the eighties, plenty video's on youtube to prove that. I don't get it, like how can you forget, even if you did 704 gigs with Freddie. Anyway, it seems he forgot lol.
heenez 8 months ago
@heenez he means after Freddie died it's never been performed live...it's like seeing Freddie reincarnated in Tom for that song...
LoobyLi88 7 months ago 3
@LoobyLi88 I cannot filter out he means after freddie died. Anyway, not really important lol. Tom did a great job I agree, but I wouldnt go as far as saying he reincarnated freddie, but thats my opinion.

When Freddie's voice was at it's best, it was the most untouchable voice in Rock, This guy, Tom Chaplin is the closest I have ever heard to Freddie's Range and Power, and his voice in this song demonstates what an amazing singer he is. Suoerb!!!

It would be great if Tom was in Queen, but I'd hate to see him break up Keane. :(
3627863 10 months ago 3
I agree Great version
But think: this guy really has an incredible smooth voice and pretty good technique and has an advantage against freddie - he can use falsetto (freddie couldnt due to those damm nodules as you know).
But the timbre and strenght arent there...
For these songs (calmer ones) he's perfect but for songs like Bo Rhap (rock part), hammer to fall, the show must go on, etc i dont think he'd do as well
PicKPiT 10 months ago

omg, this is simply amazing, Tom's The Man. love his rendition of this song. great vocals-
frompixieland 10 months ago 6
that was eerie! he must've really prepped or song's more his style, cos his under pressure isn't robust like freddie. in other words 1 or 2 songs could be seamless "match" of freddie or technically more polished (george on somebody to love), but not everything from dragon attack to AOBTD to it's a hard life.
edmame 11 months ago
@edmame
