Guys, that was a baby bird. Hissing is a natural defense, and the fuzz is downy feathering. At 4:13, pause. The fluffy thing on the right is a wing outheld in defense, and the bump at the top is where the tailfeathers would have one day grown in, if it ever survived in such a hellish place to be trapped. You can clearly see the talon foot. This could have been a wildlife rescue of an abandoned baby, possibly of an endangered species. Next time, just call a rescuer!
Instead of bothering it, why not just call animal control? They could tell you what it is and put it where it belongs. I'm all for investigating the weirdness of NJ but not at an animal's expense, plus you wouldn't want to run to the ER bc of a nasty unknown animal bite! =^..^=
This is a baby vulture, probably a baby turkey vulture. It does not have feathers yet, just a downy coat. Still frame the video a 4:12.-- It has it's rump in the corner and its head is down. It has it's mouth open and the two halves of it's black beak are clearly visible. Right behind it's lower beak you can clearly see it's right clawed leg. It is holding it's wings out and down to the floor. Right beside its left wing you can see it's other leg(claw). Baby vultures hiss when approached
Did they say it had a beak? It did look like a sloth in the body but they have very flat paces and are not found in NJ. I am dying to know what this thing is.
My best guess is that it's a mole of some kind. There are these HIDEOUS moles called Star-Nosed moles which look somewhat similar. Although I have no idea why one of those would be anywhere remotely close to New Jersey.
IDK, this looks like it could be a descendant of interspecies mating by Jungle Habitat animals after the park closed. Like when a tiger and a lion mate - it's a liger. This may have been a sloth and a bobcat - a Slobcat!
Well guys, depending where in Sussex County you are, I would fully believe it's a porcupine. We have encountered them near Tillmans Ravine and the water gap more times than I can count O.o
My guess it is some type of Sloth, due to the fur design / layout, body shape, face, it's slow movement, and warning hiss, but to my knowledge, no member of the family is a N.J. natural. This IS a wierd find! May be a "throw away pet". :-(
I hope the DEP and DFW finds out about this vid & animal, inorder to move and protect it somehow. NO doubt, someone who sees this vid, will recognize the place, go there, and generally mess the critter up somehow.
Weird NJ, my faith is restored (though I wish lighting was better. Maybe I'll check it out for myself) -
@purdyjw It isn't any trick at all there purdy, the video quality is simply the result of a very low light shooting area and an old video camera. No effects were added at all, no video tampering done. But we do agree with you, the Ghost Hunters DO stoop to some 'smarmy tricks'.
@flyer2571 The poor lighting is not contrived at all. We didn't expect to be video taping in a pitch black room when we set out that day, so we did not have a better light source with us. Thus the old video camera we carry could not focus properly. But what you see is EXACTLY what we saw, or didn't see.

The guy's voice behind the camera really creeps me out. He sounds just like the interviewer from the mock interview on the Bright Eye's song An Attempt to Tip the Scales, from the album Fevers And Mirrors. Like, it's scary how much it sounds like that, actually...
It was really hard to see but the description of gray fuzz or fluff... I'm going with others here who say it's some sort of bird. First thought was it is a Turkey Vulture chick that's a few weeks old. Their entire head and beak is black and they have gray fluff. They also like to hatch in abandoned structures. Google the images for Turkey Vultures. Hope it was alright and not in any pain or ill. Spooky.
It would help if the person/s using the camera had an inkling as to how to use a camera; like aiming AT the creature long enough for later viewing to make sense. By the end it seemed to be a possum within a nest of some sort (certainly hissing like a possum), but a momentary look at the snout poking out seemed to be [ironically enough], almost badger'esque.
It may be an owl, but it's hard to tell with the video quality. It appears to be some kind of bird--it had a beak and scaly legs as well as the peach fuzz feathers of a young bird. I'm guessing it's a large owl.
That is a weird looking animal. I'd like to see the pictures though. I can barely tell what I'm looking at with the quality. It's an intersting find though
it was a baby bird :-( at first i thought it was a sloth but i saw a better view

We had an opossum living under our porch for a while. He was big and mangy looking and he hissed just like that. Also, they do have opposable thumbs.

The poor lighting and camera work is obviously contrived. If we could actually see the animal it would not make for very compelling video.

I never thought Weird NJ would stoop to such smarmy tricks as poor video quality. This may as well have been an episode of Ghost Hunters.
