I keep coming back to watch this clip. Peter is hurt on so many fronts -- by having lost Assumpta, by Leo's baseless and baffling accusation, by his confused concern that Assumpta may have said something to cause Leo's questions. Remember, too, that this was the day that Kathleen confessed that she had interfered in another couple's lives and kept them apart. Peter is deeply troubled that he may now be seen by Leo as being in that same position. Of course, he's completely innocent.
Peter doesn't know what Leo means. He thinks the best of Assumpta and believes she wouldn't have married if she didn't love Leo. He's stayed away because it's too painful. This becomes clear later at the lake when he asks her pointedly if she was in love with Leo. It's important because a short-lived Catholic marriage not based on love stands a better chance of being annulled without serious consequences.
Peter has a profoundly active conscience. He would not lie openly to Leo. The problem here is that Leo sees the situation from within his own anger and sense of being rejected. Peter sees it from within his acute pain and sense of loss and confusion. Assumpta is wracked with guilt at hurting the 2 men she most cares about.
One of my very favorite videos posted. I LOVE Peter's spontaneous laugh when he and Siobhan are talking about the pregnancy. 'Tell that to your congregation. I will. You might at that' then the laugh which looks unrehearsed and is adorable. I don't think we see that laugh anywhere else. Love it. Watch it 2 or 3 times right in a row. Thanks for these great videos. They are part of my daily ritual on the computer. I can get my Ballyk FIX easily so I don't have withdrawal symptoms.
Peter does know what Leo is talking about. It doesn't mean that Peter isn't being honest; it seems to me that he is doing his best to stay apart from the situation and stay away from Assumpta.
Leo knows Assumpta's mind is somewhere else and he can't win her back. Here he puts two and two together or maybe he did that when he saw Assumpta come out of the church in the middle of the night. He's confronting Peter with the reality of the situation. He's right. He can't win because of the way Assumpta feels about Peter. He's more honest than Peter, if more brutal.

It took me watching it 4 times and a good dose of googling before I had any idea what Leo was saying.
Love the look on Peter's face afterward though. I think he knew exactly what Leo was asking but was trying to tell himself he didn't.

By the way, this clip is not from "Personal Call", it's from the next episode "Lost Sheep".

A no-win situation in other words...
