its not about fuel efficient cars... It is the way they run the business, Audi, BMW, Mercedes all make big V8s too, it the quality and price of the American products that are driving customers away....
Has Bush ever been seen with a double-amputee Vet on Memorial Day? Without poking fun at the person? Without then blocking extra funding for the VA and for the troops?
Actually, Toyota is having problems too. Not to the same degree, but NO automaker is making money right now. (Except Audi, and the Mini division of BMW of course)
They could build electric cars.. The technology is there. GM did it back in 1998 thru 2003. The Volt is a joke. The EV1 built by GM was a far more capable car, and it needed not gas engine. The Volt has a gas engine. GM missed the boat, by killing the EV1 program.
the EV1 couldn't be done because the battery cost too much, and no manufacturer would make it at an affordable price. The EV1s that were on the road were being put there at a loss (much like the hydrogen cars that can be leased now). I agree though- If they bail out the auto companies they should limit their truck/suv fleet to 1, and force them to make those hybrid. They should immediately reduce engine size on all vehicles - if they do that they could reduce fuel consumption of their fleet 20%.
Can we please stop with the corporate welfare? What incentives do the car companies have to innovate and fix their business models to meet consumer's interests and needs in fuel efficient / alternative energy fuels if the government just funnels them money when they're in trouble? Is Toyota in trouble? No. Why? Because they're a better / more efficient company. Is GM in trouble? Yes. Why? Because it chose to scrap the electric car in favor of the Hummer. Why do we have to pay for that?
This is truly a matter of philosophy, and practically no difference between Bush and Obama: Money from the people given to the car companies so they can sell more cars to the people; Money from the people given to the banks so they can give more loans (debt) to the people. Debt through force so they can go deeper into debt through choice.

In the meantime, as gas prices have dipped slightly, SUV sales have climbed again - are we really that fucking stupid and short-sighted?
