grohl made a demo of this song in 1994 with novoselic when they was in nirvana...and the day after they made "you know you're rights" with cobain...i find nirvana sound in this song...awesome
This song has always been amazing to me... I've moved on to other genres but I always hold a place in my heart for this....
I love the double bass kick patterns in the sludgier section... Reminds me a lot of Darkthrone's "In the Shadow of the Horns" on their A Blaze in the Northern Sky album... Dave was a big fan of extreme metal (US death and European black metal) and since that album came out in 1992, he may have taken influence from Nocturnal Culto's style.
This album makes me feel so nostalgic. This album more than any other I've listened to, I'm not sure what it is. But in my opinion, I would put this album up against any Nirvana album. Or any other rock album for that matter.
2:13-2:15 WTF WHO DOES THAT!? i remember hearing that as a kid and being blown away by how he used the feed back to change progressions... Ugh if this song could make a person fat, id be morbidly obese..
It's so hard to explain how this song makes me feel. It mellows me out yet fills me with angst. It makes me want to smile and cry at the same time. this is timeless music, This is Dave Grohl at his brilliant best
That's true. At the same time I can't really fault those people because I'm the same way with a lot of HUGE bands in history. Like, Eagles, Led Zep, The Who, Hendrix. I know these bands are legends and as a guitar player alone I should listen to their less popular stuff but I just don't. I do know other bands like the back of my hand. Like, Nirvana, FF, Metallica, AIC, STP -
@Eldererr The first 3 albums are grunge/alternative, One by One is hard rock/alternative, In Your Honor is alternative, ESP&G is alternative, and Wheels from their greatest hits album is Mainstream Rock
@guitarstring187 that might be wrong, there's this one guy trolling around YouTube hating on grohl and he seems like the type who edits wiki for hours
Still easily Dave's best work. The later albums may have stronger singles, but the debut (which he did EVERYTHING on except some guitar on X-Static) is still the best from the first track to the last.
@circa05 Kurt was more than happy to sing Dave's lyrics. When Dave first showed Kurt some of his lyrics, Kurt was excited, and said, "Now I don't have to be the only songwriter in the band!"
@Guitarstring187 You read wrong, my friend. Kurt said it himself, and Dave has talked about it many times. Otherwise, they obviously wouldn't have worked on Dave's songs together. Kurt also wasn't the only one that wrote all of Nirvana's songs towards the end. Both Dave and Krist contributed to the writing, and overall composition. They were a band... it wasn't just Kurt and 2 other dudes. They worked together, and that's part of the reason why Nirvana is so great and timeless.
@srhbtts Dave wrote Marigold and Kurt helped him. All they wrote Smells Like Teen Spirit. But other stuff is just Kurt's work. They were a band, and NIrvana wouldn't be the same without Krist and Dave, and Chad, they were irreplaceable and they had contribution into Nirvana's sound, music, but Kurt was main composer of all.
@Justeatmytoast Main composer, of course, but a lot was poured in from the rest. A lot. Many make it seem like it was close to effortless for everyone but Kurt, but that's a huge misconception. Composition doesn't just include lyrics, and even those weren't ALL Kurt every single time.
@srhbtts And it doesn't mean I see Nirvana as Kurt and two other guys, I see Nirvana as Kurt, Krist, Dave, Chad, Pat. All they are so important for me and all they did in Nirvana something amazing. I just mean they worked together not as in the way of composing, only a bit. That's all.
@Guitarstring187 Wrong! lol, Dave once said in an interview that Kurt really liked this song, Sadly, Nirvana never got the chance to take it to the studio. You're right about this song be bad ass though :D
@Guitarstring187 hmm maybe Dave wasn't telling the truth? Its possible i guess. However wikipedia isn't always right but who knows, the past is past right?
i call anything off this song 'david grohl' instead of foo fighters because he almost did the entire album by himself. This album is the closest thing to grunge out of all of their albums
@BigPharao Dave said Kut liked Alone and easy target and Exhausted very much...he wanted to change the lyrics of Alone and easy target and some other stuff...imagine Kurts voice with that song!
A demo for this song was probably recorded at the last Nirvana session, when Dave/Krist waited for Kurt for 2 days ;) Also, Dave and Kurt had jammed together since '90, playing Dave's songs as well. Ever heard of "Marigold" ? Written by Dave in ca. 1990, Kurt liked it, and it was recorded in the In Utero sessions.... Just a bit of opening up here.- Sorry, :D
yeah, in kurt cobain's biography dave grohl had wrote foo fighters songs already. he was lead guitar and vocals, kurt cobain was drummer and backing vocals and kirst noslec (not spelt right) was bassist. he even wrote monkey wrench
This song was written before the foo fighters were formed. Dave Grohl released a solo album under a different name when Nirvana was still together. The pocket watch album.
I know what he feels im exhausted!! this song is great has a bit of a black metal feel to it or black metal stole he sound from him either way its true!!!
While it may be true that jurt wanted to do this song with his own lyrics let me just tell u from a long time nirvanva'etc fan that this version is the best and congratulations.
All you motherfuckers are gonna pay, You are the ones who are the ball-lickers. We're gonna fuck your mothers while you watch and cry like little bitches. Then you're all fucking next.
That's a LOT of shit to take in and shit out and take in again and shit out again. Probably involves a fair amount of patience too. But I bet you've got all the time in the world..
your facts are all screwed up dave wrote this song made a demo and played it for kurt, kurt never actually told him he liked the song, dave heard through other people that he liked it and wanted to turn it into a nirvana song but with his (kurts) lyrics, of course it never happened because of kurts untimely deathmm but this song iss awesome ..
No dave himself said in a interveiw he showed kurt and kurt liked it and wanted to make a nirvana song. They just never came around to it. i assume dave wasn't offended Lol
I got into foo's through thier new stuff, but when i went waaay back and heard thier older songs then found out dave was in nirvana i was like, wow this bands got history. i wouldnt say theres a song they'v made that i dont like, the older stuffs got a grungey sort of nirvana feel and its a slow tempo but still quite heavy for what it is.
the newer stuff is clean polished recording studio of the 2000's style but what can you expect? one style can hardly survive on its own, had to mix it up abit
Yeah i liked the history aspect to it more, it still really interests me what people go through just produce thier music. kurt cobain died, dave still came back produced mind blowing spine tingling songs that will burn him onto music history for a good reason.but its also nice to say that the foo's and dave masterd this style before mastering the next. such a talent that i wish i had, but theres still time
Yeah it doesnt seem like theres been alot of testing for the newer ones =/ seems like they just said yeah this is our tone now were gonna use it. although the pretender is a great song i cant just stick it down to one song to say whats best lol :) i love thier acoustic stuff more than the overdrive stuff more somtimes
Theyve evolved to the band they are today through the work from the older cds. I listen to all of the albums all the time and I can hear some hints of the newer style in the recordings as early as the 1999 release of There Is Nothing Left To Lose. They have changed over the years, but quality has never been an issue. Dave is a genius and puts more work into one album than some bands do over a lifetime.
this song is sooooo great...when I borrowed their album back in the days at our library, I constantly put this song on repeat. Guitar's got a really nice distorted tune of grunge.
Does anybody agree that this really sounds like a mix between Nirvana and later Foo Fighters music? I thought so, like it was stuck between Grohl's Nirvana-era, and Foo Fighters-era.
I Think The Foo's Are Going Back To Their Good Stuff Again I Think Thats Why It Sounds So Much Like The Nirvana-Era And Foo-Later-Era.... Its Still Good!!
most of the songs were originally recorded while nirvana was still a band. in their last studio session as a band kurt was absent from the sessions for the first couple of days so dave and krist recorded some of dave's songs. the first album is all dave - he played all of the instruments except for an extra guitar on x static.
Kurt wouldnt use this song on nirvana records. Sad but true...its fuking awsome.

the newer stuff is clean polished recording studio of the 2000's style but what can you expect? one style can hardly survive on its own, had to mix it up abit

Yeah i liked the history aspect to it more, it still really interests me what people go through just produce thier music. kurt cobain died, dave still came back produced mind blowing spine tingling songs that will burn him onto music history for a good reason.but its also nice to say that the foo's and dave masterd this style before mastering the next. such a talent that i wish i had, but theres still time

id say they there best song is the pretender, but i found their new albums arent as consistant in quality

Its Still Good!!

most of the songs were originally recorded while nirvana was still a band. in their last studio session as a band kurt was absent from the sessions for the first couple of days so dave and krist recorded some of dave's songs. the first album is all dave - he played all of the instruments except for an extra guitar on x static.

don't read to much into, As a musician, and this is just me, I analyze like this while I'm with my band. Does the beat I'm playing go with the song?
Is my beat overshadowing other musicians at the wrong moments?
Does my beat fit with the song's feeling and general tempo. One of us plays a beat, or riff, and then we all just kind of build from there.
