They must have sent different models to the USA, I had a 1975 850 Commando MKII. It only had 4800 miles on it when I sold it about 4 years ago. It had the big mufflers with the flat ends and sounded much different. It did run hard. It got a lot of attention wherever I rode it. I needed money bad and had to sell it on. I shipped it from Florida to Malabu, Mexifornia where I hear Kenau Reeves put it in his garage under a cover to sit for another 20 years.
I had four Commandos. A 1968 750 Fastback. One of the very early ones. The fastest of the four. They got slower as they got heavier. Then a 1972 750 Roadster. My favourite. Sold it to buy a 1974 850. Sold that when I needed some cash. Got married in May 1975 and bought a new 850 Mk3 the following month.
Nice bike. I have the same bike (75 Mkiii) except the Roadster. Gold and black Bought it new in 1976. Does your electric start still work? Believe it or not mine works great. The secret is to pull in the clutch when using the electric thumb to avoid the extra drag of turning the trans mainshaft. It really makes a difference but a new battery is always helpful. Talking about speed, 2 years ago I brought it up to the magic "ton" just to experience it before I get too old and feeble.
I think the Mikuni's need to be exact or these beasties complain a bit. I do like that interstate tank more than fiberglass Dunstall though with the fairing. 2-1-2 is a good upgrade.
Thanx Andy. I will never sell it :-) I also have the full Norvil Proddie racer kit for it. With the Norvil kit I went from North West coast of Norway to the Centennial TT at Assen Holland in 98'. Great trip, but frequently stopping for gas cause the 10 liter small gastank.
This absolutey great stuff. I owned a Commando for over ten years, and went to the Isle Of Man two times with it. Thanx for posting this! Andy from Berlin (Germany)
The 850's a little overweight. Actually, the 850cc version of the modern Norton twin makes a great touring engine without being silly. Isolastics for comfort and a low straight ride and narrow wheelbase make for a very nimble tourer. A friend has to ride her own to carry the civilly accepted nessecities. Beer and stuff.
Sweet, but typical Norton. Since nobody is here to ride me, I'll just shut down until you're ready? Oh, you are ready? Well why didn't you say so? Let's go!
Especially that high pitch pushing 125 on an expertly tuned Commando. I had a '72 Commando Combat for 25 years. I was lucky...had one that didn't blow up. Sold it to a buddy and it's still in service. Bought a Triumph Legend in 2000. Loved the Commando, but the isolastics were a bit inadequate, and it's so nice to push that ignition button on the Trump.
The only bike I ever owned that outclassed my Commando 850 was a Vincent Black Shadow. From peashooters to plumbers nightmare!
