not even that search project RnL on youtube they are a really good **new** prog rock band. but i find that people just don't have the right voice for rock and prog its weird, the people to sing it don't exist.
the more i listen to this song, the more I think this is my favorite... Pure melody, so soft, so nice. This song makes me smile and regain trust in human being :)
I saw someone mentioning that Phil made the band worse and their glorydays were before he joined, but i strongly disagree. I mean "From Genesis to Revelation" is a nice album but it's not "genesesy". "Tresspass" all the way to "Wind and Wuthering" are amazing albums, They got a little bit different when Peter left but it still sounded great. When Steve left it got out of hand, though. According to me, "Foxtrot" or perhaps "The lamb lies down on broadway" are the best albums.
I think it's too simple to say that Genesis lost their way. I think they took a different path, much more commercial and very successful in its own way. I think the biggest change came when Steve Hackett left. I love Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering and I think they easily compare with what went before.
Have to admit, though, I always loved this track. Terribly underrated band and I don't know why. This stuff is bursting with ideas and musicianship. Rare qualities indeed.
@hardyfh1 You're right. I mean, people always talk about how band's "sell out", but if an artist changes musical direction so as to "sell out" then they must have wilfully decided to do so and that's up to them. I don't think Genesis lost their way. Whether people prefer the early stuff or the later stuff is up to them (I personally like it all), but it was Genesis that chose their direction and they must have had reason to want to do so.
I started listening to Genesis at the age of 6, but i still enjoy this song as much as i did the first time. There truly is something magical about them and the albums spanning from Tresspass to Wind and Wuthering will always be among my all time favorites ^^
i was living in siberia in 1975 and foxtrot was probably the first genesis lp ever landed in my hometown. i was stunned to hear it thru and fell in love with the band right away. looking from today i might have been the only fan back then. slowly, but surely genesis gained big following in russia....and when a trick came out it has become a fact.
Genesis lost their way when Gabriel left, and although they produced some very successful work, nothing compares with Foxtrot, and the pre Phil Collins work. Actually PC is a fine drummer, and good singer.

In order to enable full appreciation of this song's acoustic richness, it should be played loud – from the original record or CD – on high-end speakers.
@DionSebastian i agree on my computer one headphone does not work and i just bought the CD and my 200 CD player with subwoofer speakers and sound way better
Man this is funny. The memories this brings are so weird. I remember waking up this song and other songs from Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme when me and my dad when we were pulling into a wrestling meet in middle school. Mind you this was only like 4 years ago. God I can't imagine how sad my life would be without my dad introducing me into RUSH, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Renaissance, AC/DC, and all of the good stuff. (Mostly RUSH) =)
magnificent. Try to explain to today's "stars" the difference between 4/4 time and 13/16 - or how to modulate between G major and A minor - they'd physic
Favourite track off this album. I know it's all about personal taste but this song is just a triumph of concise story, atmosphere and melody. If you wanted to demonstrate what was great and good about Genesis in the early 70's then this song is it, pure and simple.
Semplicemente FANTASTICA !!! la voce di Peter è una cosa strepitosa in questo brano , divinamente sposata con la magica musica composta da veri geni quali sono stati i miei benianimi Genesis.
I always loved this song. I looked up the meaning of it. It refers to the legend of King Canute, who put his throne at the edge of the ocean and commanded the tide not to come in, to predictable results. Since I learned that, it makes the song absolutely #1 in my book. It also shows that they had a sense of humor because of the wordplay with the song title.
@ RakyMaky Thank you from the bottom of my heart. What a masterpiece!! If i haven't subscribed to your channel I will now!!! Yeah 60 likes 0 dislikes!
To Krome50 yea everything has an "official" start because the disgusting councils think they control everything and that has an effect on culture and so it is understandable that some will project that fantasy on to everything. Huh, l dont give a shit and just think 'let the sounds speak' and the fantasy will find itself shoved right up the sphincters of fucking "officials".
You seem to forget real pillar of the band from early ages Steve Hacket... PG was face of the band, but from musical point of wiev its soul was Steve... Genesis music lost its early years falvor after his departure...
Genesis were, are and will always stay as the creation of the genius of Peter Gabriel, supported by incredibly great musicians such as Rutherford, Hackett, Banks AND Collins. There would be no Genesis at all without Gabriel... but there surely would be without any of the others... that's the difference to me ! Original Genesis' enchanting music and poetry disappeared when Peter left...just like the spirit leaving the body... what do you have ? ...only a corpse....a dead corpse without warmth.
When discussing the art work for this album I was told that the small picture of a man riding an old racing bike was if fact Peter Gabriel. Apparently he used to cycle to see the artist everyday desperate to see the finnished article so the artist put him on the cover. Anyone know if this is a true story ?
@kapitoshka04 Gottabe honest, neither do i and i think the minstrels shudda explained what the fook it is all about and then we cudda enjoyed it and been in the know!
I've been a Genesis fan since I first picked up "Selling England". Such amazing stories entwined with superb musicianship. Was looking through the loft and found my old vinyl collection and in it was a copy of Foxtrot. Couldn't play it 'cos the belt on my turntable had perished. Found this on You Tube and I have to say what a brilliant track this is - encapsulates Genesis in 6 mins. Can't stop playing it ! ! ! BRILLIANT.
Genesis is the greatest prog rock band ever! With Peter Gabriel & Phil Collins! Listen to Supper's Ready - it's a 22 min song with Gabriel at the helm. They blow away Yes.
@HMan431 I can see you are in love with genesis, its great. But dont make ascertainments like this.It is very individual..Yes is a terrific band as well as genesis.
These guys weren't in their mid twenties. They actually were twenty!
This piece was written in '69 or '70, along with a haunting Mellotron string solo (different than the short ditties already here) and a different title ("Bye Bye Johnny"). That version was never released, but this underrated epic is close enough.
Bless Peter, Phil, Tony, Mike, Steve, Ant, Mick Barnard, and everyone else in this magical band.
This is my fav on this album. Great progressive rock song! Amazing to think that these guys were in their early to mid 20's when they were creating such great music!
