The US is actually one of the first countries in history to abide by that responsibility. In history, nearly every country that was decolonized "overnight" broke out into civil war. That's what happens when you pull out overnight. A power vacuum is left, and where there's a power vacuum, there will be power struggle.

@gulbirk Not really. No country in the Middle East is currently in a state of war, and the only ongoing genocide in the Arab world is in Darfur. Iraq was a fairly stable country under Saddam, turned into utter chaos once the US and UK invaded, but like it or not, has turned relatively stable. All US combat troops are out of Iraq, and hopefully, Iraq can develop similarly to Japan, South Korea and Germany (which still have large amounts of US troops present).. Although it's unlikely.

Would you rather we leave Afghanistan, which is not capable to prevent a takeover by the Taliban if we remove our troops. The way the Bush administration handled Afghanistan over the last 8 years has created the negative situation in which we find ourselves. They took the war of necessity and forced it into the background, and chose a war in which our goal was to gain natural resources, losing the moral high ground. If we had took a stronger initiative in Afghanistan, we wouldn't have to send in more troops today.

I like the president, and his speech is convincing but there is no such thing as "good vs evil" or a peaceful world, there has "never" been a peaceful world, humans have always been killing each other. The reason the United States is so rich and powerful is because we won more wars and killed more people and occupied more territory than any other country. Is it good or is it bad? It is neither, it is; "Human Nature."

The vast majority of civilian deaths in these countries are at the hands of insurgents, but events like the one you described unfortunately happen. Usually, these are investigated, and plenty of American soldiers have been sentenced for murder in American courts. It's considered illegal, both here, and there.

The US has created the world's most powerful military, and is today the world's only military superpower. By intervening in Korea, Vietnam, South America, Kuwait, Iraq, the Balkans etc etc, the US has, for better or worse, taken on a responsibility. the prize was awarded to Obama for the significant he represented in the way things are done.

If Iraq in the next decades actually turns into a real democracy with a stable economy, Bush will get his credit in the history books, but as of today, Iraq is suffering from a power vacuum, which is what normally happens when a stable government is removed overnight.

Would you rather we leave Afghanistan, which is not capable to prevent a takeover by the Taliban if we remove our troops. Also, you forgot to mention he has mandated troop removal beginning July of 2011. We can't just leave Afghanistan to fall back into the hands of the violent regime that is the taliban. We need to think not as American's, but as fellow humans, as we decide what direction we take with our involvement in Afghanistan.

The way the Bush administration handled Afghanistan over the last 8 years has created the negative situation in which we find ourselves. They took the war of necessity and forced it into the background, and chose a war in which our goal was to gain natural resources, losing the moral high ground. If we had took a stronger initiative in Afghanistan, we wouldn't have to send in more troops today.

He will try to be tough on all the issues but will ultimately fail.
