It doesnt sound like Hendirx to me, but it sure sounds great. Just another genius playing the shit out of the guitar. Treasure the greats while they are still here. More, please.
Furthermore, just because you know a ton of theory and scales does not mean your an appealing guitarist that plays with emotion. But before everyone tries to start WW III with me, I gotta say I discovered this guy today and I'm extremely impressed with this guys ability to express himself through the guitar
you guys are all morons...it's all about preference. Just because guitar has evolved from 12 bar blues doesn't mean you have to like it. And just because Hendrix influenced a lot of people doesn't mean you have to like him. You don't have to bash either of them, just listen to what you want to.
Dear God. You can love Hendrix all you want, but c'mon. Before and after his death, there have been countless guitarists that were/are much, much more accomplished than he ever could have been. Saying he's influential and (technically) the best are two different things. Also, there is more to music than the frickin' blues!!! And, no, I'm not a rocker or a metalhead. I love some jazz.
The only problem I have with Govan is he shreds where there shouldn't be shredding, and it really degrades the amazing sounds he just made by raping his guitar.
I can't deny his musical talent, his otherworldly knowlage of guitar, and his ability to play anything he wants to at the drop of a hat. But he really seperates me from his music by shredding and making it sound like crap at times.
I think the reason the video is named 'Hendrix style' is because of the backing track, which happens to be very Red House-ish. Guthrie isn't trying to immitate Jimmi, he's just playing over a track that is immitating a style that jimmi used.
Wow so much animosity, listen this is really cool and im a big fan of this guy hes awesome and really talented bit like this is his title and his style...not Hendrix so the title is kinda misleading I mean he should stay true to Hendrix if that's what he's trying to do but he can I mean Hendrix is hendrix and govan is govan lol
Just face it, this man understands more about guitar, theory, technique, phrasing, depth, feeling, and music in general than not only your precious Hendrix, but than every other guitarist in the business. As if Hendrix even knew theory lol or could play some of the licks in this.
Guitar isn't the fucking twelve-bar blues and basic pentatonic shit anymore. Deal with it.
@checklefthook Dude, listening to blues records, watching others play, being able to pick up on basic chords, and getting tips from blues players isn't knowing theory lol. Being able to pick up on keys and shapes on the fretboard aurally doesn't constitute a knowledge of theory. If you asked him to improv in E Lydian, I highly doubt he would have any idea where to begin.
A lot of "noodleing" has become synonymous with "Hendrix" because of his fans but he was actually able to explain his playing with theory. He used to play lead with Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Isley Brothers and more before becoming famous - he basically had to know some theory, you could imagine. He wasn't John Petrucci but he could get by just fine for the time. It's a common misconception that Jimi plays w/o any theory like his "noodlers", thats all. Don't take my word for it, look it up.
@JoshuaAlexanderful Hendrix knew a lot more theory than people think he did, Guthrie mentions this in one lick library interview. I don't see the reason to argue who is better :)
Well, I wouldn't go as far as you said and in you're in denial if you think Hendrix is just 12-bar blues. Guthrie himself said he isn't the best at theory and he isn't. Guys like Frank Fambale and Mashall Harrison far surpass him in theory and Marshal;l Harrison and Rusty Cooley are probably the most technically advanced guitarists alive. Buckethead is the most technically diverse as well as the most diverse when it comes to amount of genres he can play.
@Youaredildoz Obviously not a musician, either, then.
I'd normally be rude, and say you're probably 15 and don't know shit about music yet, but being that you are 33, and actually have some decent taste in some quality stuff, I'll just say give yourself another 10-20 years before playing critic to styles you are nit yet understanding, or appreciating yet.
If you played & understood that this is no studio production & more raw jam. Play guitar for a few decades, chill, then judge.
@Rampant7990 dude just tell me you that you expected that your comment will be rated as top comment or should i say your reply, and if anything in order to improvise at least trying to improvise and extremely slightly being able to sound like Hendrix requires more than thousands of hours practice and btw just for the record Hendrix didn't practice guitar like nerds so no nerds like Hendrix that's my point
@Rampant7990 well not that its much of a difference but i am 17 i am a musician i actually now a lot of "shit" about music im been taking music theory for almost 4 years and if your 33 how about you actually act like an adult. lol saying your taste in music are better dont make me laugh everyone has there own tastes in shit i said i wasnt a fan if you're really going to get butthurt over then then i think you need to mature alttile more old man i dont care if its "raw jaw" or not i dont like it.
Guys, it's supposed to be Guthrie playing over a backing track that is in the style of Hendrix. Not him trying to emulate the most overrated guitar player of all time beneath Slash and Gilmour.
I love Hendrix but, why would this be titled Hendrix style? It is bluesy and I love it but, I have to imagine he wasn't drawing from any Hendrix when he played this.
@001mcampbell The backing track is similar to Hendrix songs like Red House and Voodoo Chile Blues etc. They should have titled it 'Guthrie Govan Playing to Hendrix Style Track', the same way they titled the Larry Carlton track. Obvously he's playing his own style, and to tell you the truth, I like some of the other videos more like the Carlton, Bullet Blues, Fives, and Orange Jam. @David15Gomez Not only that, but who ever made a rule that a player has to be original to be good? And, Guthrie plays both his own ideas as well as licks that have been in the repertoire for decades, nothing wrong with that, it keeps the history of the music alive. On one tune he does a bebop lick during his solo, just try and do licks like those, they're freekin hard, very difficult. If someone wants to complain, what about all the mediocre pop we're over saturated with in the music industry.
@jonjacquemoud1 unlike most 'amazing' players out there, guthrie can incorporate into any style of music, and still sound awesome. And its not a general rule, but it would suck if every guitar player out there would play the same licks over and over dont you think? @jonjacquemoud1 Ah well in that case I apologise, but you did begin by saying that 'not only is he unoriginal', which caused the confusion. Well then we can agree on Guthrie being extremely underrated. And gtfo = get the fuck out.
@David15Gomez No, actually I said 'Not only that' refering to your coment to the guy to do his research. No need to apologize, we were both defending Guthrie, but obviously his playing speaks for itself and doesn't need to be defended. Peace brother.
i was more disappointed that people gave a thumbs up to peppers idiot saying. Of course its not hendrix or his style but technically GG is better. Technically you fucking idiots. I can argue this all day
Hendrix did not play the guitar; he sang with his fingers. No guitarist will ever be able to do what Jimi did as far as "revolutionizing the instrument," because Jimi already did that. Guthrie is an amazingly smart player, and if you ever listen to him talk about the instrument, not even about technique, or how he approaches solos etc., you'll see that Guthrie is a guitar player, and a damn fine one at that. No one can touch him on skill or feel in my opinion at this point in time.
ive watched all of GG's videos and it really comes down to how percise he is. He's got those long fingers that are like spiders hitting every note and just so enjoyable to watch. love or envy him we all wish we even came close to this.
@chrisbDTM The Backing track is a 12/8 slow blues which has existed since the 20s and been played by every guitarist in every genre since,so the track itself isn't Hendrix style either. Its been popularized by other guitarists and musicians for years, one example is "I Cant You Baby" by Ottis Rush, recorded several years before Hendrix's Red House.Other artists include Chuck Berry,Ray Charles,Elvis Presley etc.Hendrix owns the 12 bar as about much as Springstien owns the open G Chord.
@chrisbDTM and he is also playing in a hendrix style pentatonic scale. although he is using it a more different way than handrix and other blues players.
Mmmm.....been trolled, but no acrimony here. Hendrix, excellent old school guy. Original and classic as were others of his day like Page, Clapton, et al. Still love to listen to his stuff today, and no Guthrie does not sound like Hendrix. Really, come on man? Guthrie is also excellent. "Best" is, what it is to one. Jimi, Guthrie, beautiful souls. God, If Hendrix were still alive.....imagine what work he'd be doing today. RIP Jimi, you are missed by many.
@Philnewera never ever, if you'd say that about Satriani or so maybe, but guthrie is innovating as well as playing with very, very much feel. your comment is one of a none-guitar player. and as Wittgenstein said: of the things you cannot speak, don't
No soul + no emotion = another guitarist being too technical too listen to. Play with what's inside your heart, not from what your teacher or some book has taught you.Anyone will tell you that It is tough to listen to this. Loses my attention immediately. FYI learning or new gtarists, DON'T PLAY LIKE THIS GUY
@MartinHD28VStrat50th ur comment actually made me laugh...seriously...if you have a talk with GG ull probably go back to ur house in tears...and a few very strong homosexual tendencies and fantasies...just sayin
its funny how you guys actually see name "hendrix" and act like friggin bunch of faggots trying to transmit one another whos better. hendrix style relate to backing track you brainless retards. and how you can even compare these two giants of electric guitar craftmenship. who do you think you are?!
ps. sorry for vulgar language, but these discussion is really pointless.
@ryanw1pool LOL dude, Guthrie is fucking immense, but you have some major fucking balls to say Guthrie is better than Hendrix, Hendrix is the ORIGINAL GOD, NO ONE, He mastered the guitar, introduced the world to a new genre of music and has numerous break throughs whilst developing recording technology and guitar effects and amps, So please. shush.
It's a HENDRIX STYLE BACKING TRACK you dumb fucks. Guthrie is showing one way you can make the track your bitch.

i was more disappointed that people gave a thumbs up to peppers idiot saying. Of course its not hendrix or his style but technically GG is better. Technically you fucking idiots. I can argue this all day
ryanw1pool 2 months ago
I used to think i was good at guitar....then YouTube came along.....oh boy!
oliverthorpe 2 months ago
this is actually hendrix style just by looking at the neck transitionss up and down...anyone who plays hendrix music knows that
g5nosc1 2 months ago
oh maaaaan! and that does not mean that if he plays on hendrix' style backing track he plays in hendrix style .. damn....... he plays his style
peppersa1 2 months ago
We can play with a better technic than Hendrix, but without his soul, like Guthrie Govan.
DVDKC 2 months ago
i think it is actually guthrie playing to a hendrix style "backing" track similar to the larry carlton backing track
karvinx 2 months ago
Hendrix did not play the guitar; he sang with his fingers. No guitarist will ever be able to do what Jimi did as far as "revolutionizing the instrument," because Jimi already did that. Guthrie is an amazingly smart player, and if you ever listen to him talk about the instrument, not even about technique, or how he approaches solos etc., you'll see that Guthrie is a guitar player, and a damn fine one at that. No one can touch him on skill or feel in my opinion at this point in time.
buddyhagan 2 months ago
ive watched all of GG's videos and it really comes down to how percise he is. He's got those long fingers that are like spiders hitting every note and just so enjoyable to watch. love or envy him we all wish we even came close to this.

this dude is fuckin dope
nickDOTbloc 2 months ago
people dont get the meaning of these guthrie videos. the track itself is hendrix style. guthrie just improvs over it. same with the other videos

@chrisbDTM that's not a reason. the video title is wrong.
ale882xxx 2 months ago
@chrisbDTM What hendrix track is this?
chickenmanstan 2 months ago
@chickenmanstan It would fit into "peoples, peoples, peoples".
crovedran 2 months ago
@crovedran Thanks!
chickenmanstan 2 months ago
@chrisbDTM The Backing track is a 12/8 slow blues which has existed since the 20s and been played by every guitarist in every genre since,so the track itself isn't Hendrix style either. Its been popularized by other guitarists and musicians for years, one example is "I Cant You Baby" by Ottis Rush, recorded several years before Hendrix's Red House.Other artists include Chuck Berry,Ray Charles,Elvis Presley etc.Hendrix owns the 12 bar as about much as Springstien owns the open G Chord.
ShaneBluesRI 1 month ago

RIP Jimi, you are missed by many.

best guitarist at moment,a BIT underestimated. Luckily a certain man called Satriani made a compliments on his talent.

@nacheramos playing to hendrix style, not playing hendrix. I take it's referring to the backing track

@MartinHD28VStrat50th go back to your pentatonic wanking then.

Hendrix???
brathx 3 months ago
Goven would not have intended this as a Hendrix style, this would just be him jamming, if he wanted Hendrix style he would get it.
scotty688 3 months ago
he's ripped joe satriani...

The backing track is Hendrix style. He's simply playing along the track. Not in his style

its funny how you guys actually see name "hendrix" and act like friggin bunch of faggots trying to transmit one another whos better. hendrix style relate to backing track you brainless retards. and how you can even compare these two giants of electric guitar craftmenship. who do you think you are?!
ps. sorry for vulgar language, but these discussion is really pointless.

Excuse me - I think Guthrie just removed Hendrix's ass, like tenfold.

@peppersa1 I think, the "hendrix style" tag was referring to the backing track
aldricsuan 2 months ago
@peppersa1 The backing track is hendrix style
FRsleepwalker 2 months ago
@FRsleepwalker The backing track is just generic blues. Hendrix went far beyond that with his music. I'd hardly call it "Hendrix style".
awemedinade 2 months ago
@peppersa1 i hope people rip you a new ass, you ass, he's not hendrix, hes better
ryanw1pool 2 months ago
@ryanw1pool LOL dude, Guthrie is fucking immense, but you have some major fucking balls to say Guthrie is better than Hendrix, Hendrix is the ORIGINAL GOD, NO ONE, He mastered the guitar, introduced the world to a new genre of music and has numerous break throughs whilst developing recording technology and guitar effects and amps, So please. shush.
