Yes, SRV was the BLUES; unfortuntely (also unfortunate I may not be able to spell) those bright lights, fast living often take peopple like SRV out of this place too soon (see you in the next one, don't be late)!!
THE FACT THAT ANYBODY WOULD PUT DOWN EVH BLOW'S MY MIND... HE'S THE 1ST GUY ( IN ROCK & ROLL) TO DO ALL THE CREATIVE STUFF HE'S DONE WITH THE TAPPING AND THE WAMMY BAR , ETC... AND EVERYTHING ELSE HE'S BROUGHT TO THE TABLE ...30 YEARS AGO.. WHO DO YOU THINK ALOT OF THE HOT GUITARIST'S TODAY WERE INFLUENCED BY!!! THERE'S A LONG LIST OF "POPULAR GUITARIST'S OUT THERE WHO SPEAK HIGHLEY AND WHO SAY THEY IDOLIZED HIM GROWING UP ... METAL GUY'S ETC... EVH DOES ALOT MORE THAN ARPEGGIO U TO DEATH !
@stratdem WTF, I'm sorry man but I have to correct you. There is only the one Jimi Hendrix, not only a great guitarist but a great song writer and singer. The style of guitar playing that Jimi Hendrix did was a hybrid of blues, rock, soul, funk and psychedelic. BTW, Jimi Hendrix was voted by Rolling Stone Magazine Nov 11 as the greatest rock guitarist of all time. I was blowin away by Eddies shear abandonment and brute force and speed of tapping, but, we are all diciples of Jimi Hendrix! Freedom
It's always funny to see arguments or comparisons between guitarists. It's impossible to say who's the best. Everybody offers something different. My favorite guy today may not be the same next week, but then he will be again next month. I'm glad we have them all to enjoy and I try to learn from all of them. In terms of most influential guitarists, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen come to mind. They changed things forever.
Im a HUGE Eddie Van Halen fan, but if I want to listen to the blues, it's gotta be Stevie Ray Vaughn. Stevie was BORN for the blues. It was in his blood, his soul. He lived and breathed the blues. Eddie and Brian are amazing rock guitar players but this recording just sounds like rock trying to sound bluesy. They were born to Rock, Stevie was born to sing and play the Blues! I'm not saying SRV was the best blues artist, just that i prefer him to Ed and Brian when it comes to the Blues.
i love this..chased the starfllet project recording for years..finally got a vinyl copy and tracked it down on CD the same week lol...took me over 20 years, but had 2 copies, and hilariously i dont own a turntauble any more.... lol. this is just great...very un-queen and EVH is just great.
Two awesome guitarists. Two examples of thinking outside the box and going in completely different directions. Brian with his incredible layers, delay and melodies, Eddie with his speed and skill. You gotta say both are incredibly technical.
@Pjaynes781 Right in the money...by the way I hate the tag arena rock,... but you still right ...This song is a celebration..a tribute from EVH and Brian May both great fans of the "BEANO" record John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton...I have a videotape with EVH saying " yeeahh man Clapton to the bone"......to play the blues ask for SVR, Johnny Winter, Buddy, BB, Clapton...EVH and MAY don´t master the Blues cus they don´t want to.....pretty much it
@vakeromty I'm a big EVH fan and i love the blues. I know Eddie was largely influenced by EricClapton, but i think i recall reading in a magazine that Clapton didn't really think much of Eddies guitar playing.
@Yeseniaschick "Clapton didn't really think much of Eddies guitar playing" thats ok im really not a fan of claptons playing .though i dont think he going to loose any sleep over it .
I have meet Vai multiple times & for his genius he is a very humbled guitar player.
VAi & Satch & Yngwie all idiolized Jimi & yet they play shit Jimi could never do. Jimi was amazing for time i UNDERSTAND this. No one could play like Hendrix. But Jimi never played Arpeggios like Vai & others have. Some Guitarist may have more famous music than Vai & Satch & Yngwie, doesn't meen there better guitar players. I love Angus Young as a Guitar Player more, doesn't meen he's better than Vai, EVH.
Some day someone might say the same thing you said about hendrix but the it would be about vai/satch/yngwie. Not saying it will happen, but it's possible.
Yeah but neither one of them can write like Hendrix. Vai and Satch use the template of EVH and Yngwie is just a juiced up version of Uli and Blackmore.
Vai & Satch are superior to EVH. Eddie is awesome but is not on a level with those guys big dog. Yngwie over does it I agree but plays unbelieveable. Hendrix was good, just not the best I've ever heard. I feel Andre Segovia was hands down the greatest most gifted guitar player. He alone got more people to play guitar the world over. Look him up. He played flamenco. Did shit on acustic that cats today are doing on electric guitars. I liked SRV Robert Johnson & Stanley Jordan more than Hendrix.
Segovia was classical and he mainly transcribed music. Flamenco was not his forte'. Paco de Lucia was the real flamenco. Vai and Satch owe EVH for revolutionizing guitar. Vai and Satch are great technical guitarists. Without EVH there would be no Vai and JoeS. without Hendrix no EVH. Vai, JoeS and Yngwie borrowed many licks from Michael Schenker,DiMeola, Uli Jon Roth. Want good acoustic 7 string..Yamnadu Costa.
without Robert Johnson there would be no Hendrix, EVH & so on. EVH is great no argument. Vai & Satch are miles & miles better than he is. No disrespect to u or evh. Been playing guitar myself for 24 years. Segovia did play classical but also touched on flamenco & did it well. IMO no one played a guitar like Andre, just my opinion. Charo is a great example of how great andre was. I respect all great musicians even If I don't like the genre. EVH wasn't even the first to hammer on like he claims.
He never cliamed to be the 1st to do hammer ons. Alan Holdsworth actually is the father of hammer ons. Charo played more flamenco than Segovia ever did..He despised flamencoist. Both were cover artists. Paco de Lucia is the best ambassador for flamenco.
Segovia Taught Charo it's widely known. That's why she is so gifted imo. Sedgovia nonetheless is a phenom. To me Greatest Talent to play guitar to ever walk planet earth. I speak for me brother. Not U or anyone. JMO. I also Love Stanley Jordan check him out if you don't know already. AMAZING Guitarist. If I believe in Segovia & Vai, I'm not going to think EVH & Hendrix to be 2 best all time. Like many claim them to be. Take Care Brother.
I have seen SJordan many times and he is amazing. DiMeola discovered him. He is another who does great covers but no original stuff. Me I prefer musicians who do their own compositions. Vai and Satch were huge influences on me in my teens. It was their influences that made me go deeper.
your fucking crazy eddie van halen would bury jimi hendrix so far under the stage it would take 6 fucking months just to locate him. hendrix is not even close to the guitarist that edward van halen is this is plain FACT! and not some empty bullshit opinion.
EVH is great , I'd give your nuts to play like him. BUT he is NO where near Steve Vai & Satch & Malmsteen & Vinnie Moore. Best Guitarist Ever is Andre Segovia. He was a Classical & Flamenco. He died in the late 80's in his earlies 90's. He played a flamenco guitar like EVH & Vai played a electric. Simply Amazing. I respect EVH & You. Take Care. Been playing guitar myself for 24 years.
EVH my brother does not play as techicnal as these guys as I listed do.
Andre Segovia Blew all there doors away. He got more people around the world to pick up a guitar than anyone. albeit acoustic, still impressive. He played acoustic better than these guys play electric 1000 fold. Take Care.
you bet ....AMEN..!! some youngsters don´t admit that the approach, in the guitar playing by VAI or SATRIANI, came from EVH....They are more technical ..yes..but the ideas came mostly from EVH.
@lucrativeelfmongrel I don't know how Steve Howe got brought into this, but 3 CHEERS, Mr. Howe may be the greatest classical rock guitarist with jazz Fusion abilities ever...Steve is a MASTER!!! Queen asked him to play a solo on the song Innuendo in the middle of the song, the flamenco guitar part is so UNMISTAKABLY STEVE HOWE, it's awesome.
Theres only one man who keeps playing the guitar after a string snaps during a studio recording. Edward Van Halen. Pure rock n roll. Hes the greatest ever.
I also think Eddie is the greatest.....but Brian is THE only guy out there who has made me question that. Maybe Holdsworth.....but I always come back to Eddie.
