  • Two Buster Keaton leading ladies here: Sally O'Neil (Battling Butler) and Marion Byron (Steamboat Bill Jr.). Ann Sothern's real name was Harriet Lake, not Byron. At this time, Marion Byron was probably the better known of the two. Alberta Vaughan co-starred with John Wayne in one of his early cheapies. I don't know if she went to jail. I understand she went nuts & ended up in a mental institution.

  • dolores was so beautiful!

  • this is a Warners production, so what is Marceline Day doing here with her sister Alice Day? Marceline would've still been under contract to MGM am I not correct?

  • "Mr. Warner gave me 16 excellent reasons, every one of which is a good reason for doing almost anything"

    That's an amazing line!

  • Ah, the arrival af the microphone... I love the way they seemed to be "pointing guns" at the heads at all of these girls' heads! The talkies had arrived, and the silent film stars had to comply. If you look closely at Loretta Young, you can see that she is genuinely stressed out! What fun!... What courage!

  • blane & young certainly look alike, don't they?

  • @VTMCompany Sally Blane & Loretta Young (to me) look like twins, but they're not. Born in Salt Lake City (yet Catholic, not Mormon), Sally later married actor Ricardo Montalban.

  • @JudgeJulieLit It was Loretta Young's youngest sister Georgiana who married Ricardo Montalban. Sally married movie director Norman Foster.

  • A private print of this survives in COLOR.

  • Richard Barthelmess, what lovely, lovely man.

  • i love this video 5*

  • If Marion Byron and Harriett Byron weren't sisters, what's the relationship?

  • None, Just Hollywood fluff

  • They were just two aspiring, young actresses that happened to look/sound alike, silly!

  • très belle archive !!!

  • Alberta Vaughn went to jail for a long time,in the 1940's.

Her sister Adamae died young in 1943.

  • Wow - what a wonderful video. I love musicals and seeing all these sisters is fantastic. After you said which gal is Ann Southern I did recognize her unforgettable voice. To be honest I couldn't tell by just looking which sister is Loretta Young. They look so much alike. Thank you so much for this special - what fabulous costumes of their native countries - and it's really good to see handsome Richard emceeing here. -Paula

  • how ol is the warner brothers? O_O

  • God; yes, they do! I thought it was only me who thought that. (This is the similarity 'twixt ann sothern and loretta young) It was on you tube a year ago. Anyway....both stunningly beautiful women.

  • This clip made my day. The reference to Marilyn Miller in the intro is significant because what you see in this clip is the kind of production that Miss Miller and others Broadway stars performed in the 1920s. Lovely in its rawness...

  • Dolores Costello was so beautiful. I like to think I see a little of Drew Barrymore in her grandmother.

  • WOW! I never would have recognized Ann Sothern if you didn't tell me! Thanks for sharing!

  • this clip is choice. i love the few musicals that got made in the 18 months after sound was introduced, before the 30s arrived.

"Meet My Sister" has a wonderful riff. To think this picture cost $850K in 1929 (roughly $28 million today)

You must have a laserdisc player. Only laserdiscs are available on ebay and amazon. Wish you could copy it as DVDs

  • Great clip! Most interesting to me was seeing young Harriet Byron prior to becoming Ann Sothern.

  • I LOVE this! Viola looks STUNNING!

    Thankyou so much ^_^

  • Molly and Sally are actually my great-great-great-aunts or something of the sort, so this is sweeeeet.

  • Where is Dolores Costello?

  • She is with her sister Helene at the very beginning.

  • thanks great bit of 1920's frosting. love it

  • Oh, thanks VERY much!! MEET MY SISTER is not in my copy of the movie!

  • LOL Wonderful number with the usual stereotypes of different countries. :)
