Two Buster Keaton leading ladies here: Sally O'Neil (Battling Butler) and Marion Byron (Steamboat Bill Jr.). Ann Sothern's real name was Harriet Lake, not Byron. At this time, Marion Byron was probably the better known of the two. Alberta Vaughan co-starred with John Wayne in one of his early cheapies. I don't know if she went to jail. I understand she went nuts & ended up in a mental institution.
this is a Warners production, so what is Marceline Day doing here with her sister Alice Day? Marceline would've still been under contract to MGM am I not correct?
Ah, the arrival af the microphone... I love the way they seemed to be "pointing guns" at the heads at all of these girls' heads! The talkies had arrived, and the silent film stars had to comply. If you look closely at Loretta Young, you can see that she is genuinely stressed out! What fun!... What courage!
@VTMCompany Sally Blane & Loretta Young (to me) look like twins, but they're not. Born in Salt Lake City (yet Catholic, not Mormon), Sally later married actor Ricardo Montalban.
Wow - what a wonderful video. I love musicals and seeing all these sisters is fantastic. After you said which gal is Ann Southern I did recognize her unforgettable voice. To be honest I couldn't tell by just looking which sister is Loretta Young. They look so much alike. Thank you so much for this special - what fabulous costumes of their native countries - and it's really good to see handsome Richard emceeing here. -Paula
God; yes, they do! I thought it was only me who thought that. (This is the similarity 'twixt ann sothern and loretta young) It was on you tube a year ago. Anyway....both stunningly beautiful women.
This clip made my day. The reference to Marilyn Miller in the intro is significant because what you see in this clip is the kind of production that Miss Miller and others Broadway stars performed in the 1920s. Lovely in its rawness...

"Mr. Warner gave me 16 excellent reasons, every one of which is a good reason for doing almost anything"
That's an amazing line!

@JudgeJulieLit It was Loretta Young's youngest sister Georgiana who married Ricardo Montalban. Sally married movie director Norman Foster.

Dolores Costello was so beautiful. I like to think I see a little of Drew Barrymore in her grandmother.

WOW! I never would have recognized Ann Sothern if you didn't tell me! Thanks for sharing!

this clip is choice. i love the few musicals that got made in the 18 months after sound was introduced, before the 30s arrived.
"Meet My Sister" has a wonderful riff. To think this picture cost $850K in 1929 (roughly $28 million today)
You must have a laserdisc player. Only laserdiscs are available on ebay and amazon. Wish you could copy it as DVDs

Great clip! Most interesting to me was seeing young Harriet Byron prior to becoming Ann Sothern.
