I was on the white van directly behind the double decker bus. You can see me in the grey sweatshirt and red hat and my wife in the blue coat walking in front of the camera immediately after the girl gets hit with the camera at 0:37 . This happened on the last day of our honeymoon from the US.
i´m soooo shattered. if been in christchurch in 2007 and 2011 for the rugby WC. it´s so sad right now, a ghost city and nothin like before! but still the place for me to be, i wanna help to rebuild it! nz is still the best country in the world, i love you!!!
The only reason its a "ghost city" is because nobody can get into the center because it was so damaged.
New buildings have already started construction and the red zone is getting smaller. People are still crowding the areas they can get into, esp. Cashel.
Yeah, I think they should keep Cashel Mall in that container style. Its really unique and would be a nice landmark as the starting point for Christchurch 2.0. :3
@Maidenmeyer me too - NZ and Japan are my favourite two countries on Earth and 2011 hammered them both - in fact both disasters were within 20 days - it was surreal - i couldnt believe it.
Thanks for posting this. I worked in Simply New Zealand, the tourist shop right next to where your tram stopped but I was thankfully away sick from work on the 22nd of Feb, but I was meant to be there with my girls and this has brought me close to where I would have been that day. I'm glad you're safe.
Thanks for Posting this. I'm assuming you're a Tourist, so I hope you were able to get Home safely and get your Belongings back from where ever you were staying. I think it's been shifted now, but that Tram sat on the Tracks where it stoped for months.
@Dasz89 that was not CTV, that was a 3storey building block that had been condemned since the September quake, and was due to be demolished the next week.
@Dasz89 This was an old accountancy building I think, on the side of Chancery Lane. On the right there used to be an old cinema, which had already been pulled down (before the earthquakes), so there was just an empty space. I believe the accountancy building was also empty/not in use for some time. The CTV building was about three blocks from where this was taken (two blocks over, one block down)
@MissPumpkincheeks That'll be the building next door to where the Westend used to be; just off Chancery Lane. (I think it's called Servenkie Jones Buiding or something like that.) They're in the Square anyway.
@DasZ89 I was two blocks away from you when this hit, in the block behind the Cathedral, 4storys up. I'd hate to think how being in that tram felt to you all. Were you visiting, or are you locals?
@ratcats We were visiting CHCH for the first time and first thought about having a big accident with the tram until the motor man screamed "JESUS!" and everybody looked out of the right window to see this collapsing house.
@qwertykiwi Was that sarcasm? In Chile and Mexico we haver stronger quakes and not so much damage as NZ with that little 6.3... Good for you and your "stringent" codes.... You're full of tūtae
@luiseduardo586 Christchurch experienced some of the strongest peak ground acceleration ever recorded in the world ANYWHERE, coupled with the fact that the epicentre was located extremely shallow and close to the city. The vast majority of buildings withstood the shake, and it was only a minority that actually fell down. Haiti earthquake ground acceleration of 0.5, chch ground acceleration of 2.2... fucking idiot.
@luiseduardo586 perhaps do a bit of research on the quakes we've had in nz, before assuming our quakes and your quakes are the same. perhaps instead of being smug about bigger quakes/less damage, you could have some compassion for the lives lost in my city.
furthermore, qwertykiwi is correct. we DO have some of the most stringent building codes in the world which is why our city wasn't totally flattened. qwertykiwi is also correct in saying you're full of shit.
@luiseduardo586 i suppose you're posting on the poor japanese quake/tsunami vids berating them for the damage in the wake of their devastating disasters too? yet you'd still expect sympathy if a quake flattened your slum.
mexico. what a country to look up to. where they have shows with people fucking donkeys.
@luiseduardo586 Why would you say such a thing without knowledge of a code of practices regarding quakes. That our homes survived and no one died as a direct result of injury in their residence says a lot about our building codes. Not that I'm pretending they couldn't be better in other areas but my home, built in the 1940s has protected myself and my daughter. During four major quakes (two within one hour of each other), our home remained as we all would want, i.e. "as safe as houses".
@luiseduardo586 We're living in a city that has many colonial and post-colonial buildings that range in style from neo-gothic to art-deco. Then you've got the hideousness of 1970s - 1990s architecture. And we've lost the heart of this city. A beautiful city that has been constantly reviewing earthquake coding and updating buildings. I daresay few engineers would have predicted quakes of the February type and their ferocity. It doesn't all come down to magnitude, as I have found out first hand.
OMG! You were on the tram! Haha, I was upstairs at school, singing the double rainbow song, then BAM! We all start screaming and run downstairs, outside, and yeep! It was crazy as!
@annechopincraiglum what the hell? the camera movement makes you feel sick?! How about being in that goddamn earthquake?! you can move on to the next video if it's that bad for you.

I can't believe that the tram was lucky enough to stop in an area that didn't get cracked.
CHC is sooo lucky nothing spilt or crushed and exploded like a car dealership or petrol station etc.
that would have made CHC and the city fringe suburbs uninhabitable fullstop.
