  • I don't blame Kelly at all. I hate those f'n in-ears. They never sound good, they don't stay in, and if they do stay in, they itch. Give me floor monitors every time.

  • @Dougonbass good IEMs are studio reference quality. they *do* stay in if you have good tips that give you a good seal; someone with money to spend on them like kelly would have custom tips that are molded to her ears, so this should be a non-issue. i dunno about the itching, i've not had that problem. the problem with floor monitors is that the perceived loudness and staging changes whenever you move, but IEMs are consistent since they are always in your ears (well...)

  • I think she only uses them to start off with, then from there she wings it.

  • FAVORITE video of the week by far lol i laughed through the whole thing :)

    She is so awesome

  • I'm a guitarist/singer and i know the in ear "problem" well. When everything is set perfectly its awesome. But its not working without ambience for me.

The good thing is, i play in a church regularly so we can work with the same sound technicians all the time. There were two major improvements we realized so far: Ambience and putting at least some or a big part of the PA mix on the IEM. Thats a big difference being able to hear what actually comes out the box instead of just have your own mix.

  • give me your iem's.

  • HAHAHHAHAHHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOL

  • i'm about to purchase some ultimate ears UE5's.. i'm also getting the ambient feature fitted, which means you can manually choose to let in a certain amount of DB's.. or block em out completely like the normal buds..i'm looking forward to getting em!

  • I incredibly freaked out on the picture at 1:12.... I was at that concert!!!!!!!!!! My first kelly concert!!!! Sorry, i became a 13 year old girl for a second lol

  • I am a Professional Monitor Engineer. A lot of performers pull one plug so they can listen to the crowd and some of them like a mix between the IEM's and the House PA. It is best to keep both bud's in and have an ambient mic for crowd response. With that said it's nothing special to see and artist with one plug out.

  • Haha that's interesting to see. My experience with buds is that if your mix isn't 100% perfect from doing extensive sound check, you're constantly screwing with your mix. As a bass player I found I could never get enough bass through the buds without eating up the rest of the mix. The other downside to buds is after using them for a while, if you play a gig without them... you're toast! They were good for the nights I had a headache and could turn them down to a whisper! :)

  • funny video, but most people including myself use only one at a time

  • In-Ear monitors are awesome if used right! You have to make sure the tech knows what the hell he's doing...if he/she doesn't you either go deaf or can't hear and screw up your music. Most companies use like a hard plastic casing...but some companies are using like a silicon now..which is very comfortable.Either way they work, and it's dangerous to use one and not the other! do research before using them!

  • and too...kelly either doesn't get them put in right before she goes on stage! There's like this chord tie...it helps tighten the chords around the back of your neck...and the chord going over her ear down to the pack...is loop shaped to stay on her ear.Or she needs to find a new tech!

  • I only use one. I have never really liked the sound of my guitar in my IEM's. I can hear my vocals great with one and still hear my guitar directly from my amp. I have been told that this is not good for your ears though.

  • It's probably to hear what's going on around her.

When you have the IEMs in, you're sealed off and don't get any ambient noise.

So she can't hear the crowd, or possibly some of the instruments correctly.

I prefer only using one. Mainly because I like hearing the crowd's reactions and cheering.

  • i dont have my IEM's yet coz the band im in were only playing small venues, but i take one of my earplugs out all the time coz i cant hear the guitars when my earplugs are in deep, so dont hit on Kelly coz she takes her out!

  • i always use one especially for those big gigs

  • I take mine out somtimes... not a big deal

  • she just wants it in one ear so she hears and feels more live sound.quackbeef has the idea

  • anyone know what brand she currently uses for her tour?

  • i hate when both in ear monitors are in my ears too.

  • Everybody has their way. I am the last person on the planet to question whatever the hell it takes for Kelly to do what she does to get that sound to come out of her mouth.. I am guessing she knows exactly when she doesn't need the ear piece any more in each song or some such thing. Sometimes there is too much feedback maybe? Who knows?

Kelly also reaches around back to adjust the volume on something she's always wearing on her backside. Whatever it takes, woman.

  • The Singer in our band do the same.

The Band gets louder and louder during the show. (espacily guitarists ^^)

Then the singers begin to take off their IEM.

Or they do it, to get more of a live-band-feeling.

  • Kelly Clarkson is extremely attractive, and obviously has a pretty good ear if she can confidently sing in tune without her in ear. I on the other hand am extremely ugly and can't afford in ear just yet and sing off key live. crazy stuff son.

  • true

  • i guess some singers feel to isolated using them. i am a drummer and they are great..... the best solution for singers is using both floors and in ears.

  • Sbetya, you are in idiot.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!!:)) you go girl!:)) wonder why she does that..

  • I laughed soo much at this. Its typical Kelly. Hilarious

  • With or without her IEM...she is still SOoooo HOT!

  • Only using one in ear is very bad. You'll encounter what is called volume matching when you attempt to match the stage volume in one ear, to the isolated volume from your earbud. You create an illusion where in reality, the level from the earbud is actually 10-12db higher than the db level from the stage. You damage your hearing without even knowing it. Always keep both buds in. When experience isolation syndrome, you need to just play through it. It will go away if you give IEMs a chance.

  • um..no

  • @Stratosticks then why does Sting use one ear monitor in one ear only?

  • maybe the hard acrylic material used in most of the high end IEMs like UE10pro doesnt suit her..she shud checkout Silicon customs.

  • It's VERY common for people to use one and have the other one out. In all clips she still has her other ear monitor in!!!

  • hmm. i remember simon cowell talking about how on idol the singers are trained and made to perform without in-ear monitors. so maybe its just that kelly got used to singing without one live, so it makes it strange for her.

  • i use in ear monitors and sometimes i like to take one out so i can hear the effects in the house...

  • ahahaha, it's funny!

    love ya, kel!

  • lol @ 0:41

  • Watch this video high, its soooo jokes!!!

  • .It's not the Ear Monitor comfort because if you're a artist like Kelly you get the top of the line custom molded ear monitors....sooo it must be the IEM Soundguy(Sorry for my stage ignorance)

  • "IEM soundguy" = Monitor Engineer

  • yeah, when she pointed to her ear, then up she was telling him she wanted more. There was likely one more sign we missed telling him who she wanted. usually she would point at herself to hear more of her. But the reason she took them out? well read ever other comment on this post.

  • A lot of musicians only use one IEM for the fact that IEMs isolate the sound which is coming from the outside. And to hear the audience screaming, you've got to take one side of the IEM out.

  • wow...very funny^^

    Great work!!!

  • Kelly's still the best :p

  • I must admit that IEMs are not very comfortable and their sonic quality is negated by the fact that they are simply a pain to use for some people.

  • she doesn't take them out a lot nowadays

  • rofl

  • Maybe she just feels uncomfortable. Those things aren't all that comfortable. She's awesome though :)

  • hers are probably comfortable bc they are probably custom fit

  • Notice that she is only taking one out. A lot of singers that use IEMs do that, but it is a terrible habit to get into. It is an indication that the artist is uncomfortable with the mix they are hearing.

  • to funnny lol that was cute

  • LMAO!!!!!!!!

  • LMAO! I love the last part, with her shoulder full of in-ears! :D

  • ahahha nice nice!

  • I notice that she's always taking them out. It cracks me up.

  • LOL, great vid :)

so how does kelly keep in tune and with the beats when she sings then?!!?! i mean, she can be eally rgood, but the music must be SOOOO loud that NOBODY can be THAT good!

  • well she was classically trained..so maybe she learned a way?

  • kelly needs to watch this video, lol

  • Get vote for Kelly! music dot msn dot com/music/artistofthemonth

    Kelly is the queen!

  • my god! LOL!!! awsome video!!!

  • hahaha!

  • lol
