At 2:17 we see the moment which I also object about on your fine website. The lower weight is locked in the hook, and at the very moment of it's greatest potential, it's being resrained from rolling up the ramp. It gets jammed between the slot/hook and the ramp, and if anything, can only give a little bit of energy over to the wheel by decellerating against it.

I propose slots which allow the weight to take exactly the path it would up the ramp, had the slots and wheel not been there. Please replicate the same weight, ramp, and starting velocity, and see what the weight does uninterfered other than the set friction levels. Overlap this with the current design, and draw the desired shape of he slots. You'll find that the desired shape is also shown on the picture of Abeling's wooded prototype. Wide at the outside!

Next I would investigate the desired location of the slots most inner edge, near the axle. Should it lay before, or behind it, relative to the outside edge at the rim? Big difference, IMO.
