hey guys im 16 and was wondering about getting into bricklaying and getting an appretiship how is it on your back i have herd some bad stuff :/ but im still keen on doing it. help would be appreciated : )
Steve, I've had two years of High School Masonry and recently started working for a Masonry Company here in the US. One thing that really kept me out of trouble is your level video. I was one who laid a level course but had holes in it. I've corrected myself many times since watching that. You've helped me lay better projects in school and kept me from bring fired. 1,000 thanks Steve!!
It is a white salt based chemical that appears on the bricks. This occurs if the bricks are to wet when laid or are to soon out of the kiln when delivered to site. There is a practice of using hydrochloric acid to remove it but this is not a good one. The only thing that truely cleans it off is time and weather.
Query: Why don't the bricks at the bottom of a brick building crush? it'd seem they would because of the weight above,...I'm referring to a multiple story structure
its just a shame so many companies try to offer these courses at unrealistic prices an try to justify it by means of "gaining "valuable" skills" when in actual fact even after completing the courses their not even classed as competent brickies i jus hope you keep up with the support and advice and lessons that you so graciously offer
Steve, how much mortar is required to lay a sq metre of bricks, half-brick thick wall..I know you need about 60 bricks but can't find anywhere that tell you how much mortar you need. Ideally I'd like to know the quantities of sand and cement required...
Have you ever tried laying bricks? Did you know it takes ten years to become an excellent bricklayer who has been there and done that. Bricklaying is just like other skilful trades, but also to have a natural dexterity with tools is a great advantage. I have noted over the years that DIY is limited to trades in which a lot of time can be taken with materials that do not go off The wet trades are the most difficult to master.
hi i was wondering if you knew what loose atmospheres were.??....im at college and i cant find the answer in any book or anything...not even my tutor knows what it is? thanks...
I'm afraid I can not help you with that one really I'm sure thats a physics topic, when atoms collide electrons fly off and cause a "loose atmosphere" I think but I'm really not sure what help that would be.

I have made my living as a bricklayer for 28 years and now teach bricklaying in Further Education for 4 years. You've only just started at 10 years.
