@fffitgc you know outside of touring, "NIN" is just Trent in the studio, right? there is no band, its him and a bunch of Synths, drum machines and guitars, at some points a producer.
Great record, im not big into hip-hop/rap music, but this cd got me into Saul Williams, loved his second self titled record as well, shame more rappers are not intelligent like him.

This video brings up a question in my brain. Did escaped slaves ever team up with natives to fuck white man? It only seems logical escaped slaves would find something in common with them.
You know the thing I love about Saul is; his words , excuse the pun, speak for themselves. This track takes away from the strong lyrical/vocal driven-ness that I've come to expect from Saul. I dig the NIN influence but let's turn down the backing track and let Saul's powerful voice ring through. Also, did Trent say "Imma dress you like Chicken George, cool with you?"
If he likes it, eh, doesn't matter. I imagine Trent has looked back on some of his videos, shaking his head at how he didn't like how it turned out. I think Saul has created something he likes here. And in the longrun, sweetness.
Weird, this is my first time hearing a record from the album and it sounds exactly like a Nine Inch Nails song except with Saul on vocals. Pretty cool nonetheless
Niggy Tardust is just as awesome as any of his other stuff (methinks). But I can see how it could seem a bit abrasive to someone who got into Saul via his early stuff. "The Ritual" has one of the greatest hip-hop beats ever produced.
he seems to want a bigger audience and to reach out to (especially) young black males, but the industrial sound veers toward white middle class kids, whats's that about?
i love his stuff but he needs to get back to basics.
I agree - I don't think the color matters, he is in the minds of those he inspires and its going to do whatever he wants it to do. "Back to the basics," sounds like you're uncertain about accepting Saul for his creativity and rather judge his medium of spreading his message more than just LISTENING.
@symon2525 because some people in this world are born with a privilege over others, and the color of your skin, whether it truly matters or not, will affect how you see and experience things, and to say otherwise is denying this. it also implies cultural erasure. i know what you're trying to say, but it really does matter a lot.
well i'm actually white and midle class and really enjoying that industrial beats...but i dont get,why white people can listen to any kind of rap or hip hop, but black people couldn't to stuff like that.
its a matter of taste not of colour i hope. and there are so many damn mc's...why ONE, just f*cking ONE shouldnt try something else.
@TopGunOriginal well, im presuming you're not black, it's very sad how bad african americans have it bad when it comes to instant gratification racism. do you honestly believe all blacks like gangster rap. open your mind brother, you're missin out on the colorfulness of other people's ways of life. and i think the music like any other music is intended to appeal to the human race, rythm and beat doesn't deflect off people's skins!
"im presuming you're not black" - your presumption is incorrect, i am black. Thank you for projecting your own stereotypes and racism onto me to incorrectly make your point.
Back to the video, i never said all blacks love gangsta rap. I am black, i do not like gangsta rap. I'm also not blind or ignorant, to say most black youths listen to industrial hip hop (like Saul Williams) is not being honest.
Saga Storyteller can you elaborate on what you mean by "tries his best to be different"...Is his individuality so alien to you because you yourself have not seen it before? How many versions of self is the man allowed? If he were to be less different who and what type of person would you have him be?
I'm sure there were thousands who dismissed The Velvet Underground's Venus In Furs as Artsy and Pretentious, ( there probably are still thousands who do) but that is probably one of the finest records ever produced. I wouldn't say that this particular track is in that league, but Saul Williams is incredible and definitely in that avant garde tradition of artistry. Besides, nothing wrong with artsy.
Australia is a Convict Colony. In my estimation so is the US and few other "allies" I was mad at the lack of Aboriginal people I was seeing out and about Sydney The projects in RedFern looked exactly like the projects I grew up around, with people getting high or drunk on the stairwells hanging clothes to dry out the window etc I even had a bunch Aboriginal kids walk up to me and tell me excitedly that they were Niggers too. I wanted to write something they could scream at the top of their lungs
It's like you take Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Hank Shocklee, some German Krautrock and little bit of Mozart thrown into the kitchen sink and you get Niggy Tardust.
YeS ToTaLLy.... & Ginsgerg,...& James Baldwin,...& Basqiat...industrial PuBlIc EnEmY.....VooDoo LuV ChiILD of hardcore PuNk rock Robeson & a buddhist beat poet.....sooo glad trent from NiN is working w/U,,,makes me respect trent more too.......soo glad i found yr music & spoken word........very inspiring........FuCkiN' AwEsOmE!!!!
most think that saul is trying to be like trent not because of his music but because of how it sounds... UNDERSTANDABLE WHEN TRENT PRODUCED THIS ALBUM YOU MORONS.. of course its gonna sound a little like reznor...
But that's the issue that I've always had with this album, not because it sounds like NIN, but because it's barely a hip-hop album. I'm all about progression and experimentation, but when the reason I started listening to an artist is compromised, I lose interest.
if your all about progression and experimentation this should be right up your alley.. even hip hop has to change eventually.. saul is a poet before an artist.. it shouldn't matter how it sounds.. its something new to the genre.. at least he's is trying to break molds and make his mark be known personally i consider saul to be a supernatural hendrix/pac hybrid.. he's making hip hop move forward not stay where its been for the past 10 years.
This is a cool video but there are much better songs on the Niggytardust album which deserve to be singles... "Break", "Raised To Be Lowered" or "WTF!" need videos like this one!!
YES. But not the ususl boomeritis new age, but an integral new age. Unlike the pathological version of the new age professed by the hippies in the 1970s, this one has depth, not just surfaces. Pathological, deconstruction-based post-modernism and new age 'philosophy' really would like to reduce everything to culture, instead of acknowledging ALL GOOD OF HUMANITY: subjective, objective, intersubjective and interobjective domains of consciousness and culture, including integration of spirituality

You put way to much thought into this crap. Look at you trying to impress people you don't even know with all of your big words. Get laid anytime this... year?
You are most original, mister Gosrisky. Big words ay? Are you trying to deconstruct these big words? Be my guest. Laid? Irrelevant! :) If you are confused about these big words in any way, then ask questions, what ever questions! Saul Williams thinks the same, prety much, though, about it, but he knows more of this than I do. There are no 'small' words to use when it comes to write that post. Deconstruct this.
Getting laid? What ever fits oneself best. Objectivity, subjectivity, interobjectivity, intersubjectivity. Are these big words big? Let me define them. Subjective is what ever occurs in one's consciousness, objective is the behavior of objects, the behavior of a human being under crack cocain. Intersubjective means culture - the sharing of individual interiors to create a collective but interior domain of dynamic knowledge. Interobjective is the sharing of exterirors of objective truths.
Wow, this music is awe-inspiring. It transcends genres. I can really hear Trent Reznor's industrial influence. There is also a tinge of psychadelic and funk which gives it a unique sound. This is unlike anything I have ever heard. All of you feeble minded assholes who keep on pigeon holding Saul Williams for being black are the reason why good music never succeeds. You need your art spoon fed to you.
... well the convict wakes up and sees his original face and his already enlightned nature being synonymous and one with the enlightened nature of everything and nonthing... beyond everything and nonthing for SURE. I is seen'... that is seen... we seen' ... its are seeing and freeing. TRANSCEND AND INCLUDE.

I've been a fan of Saul's since '98, bought the first and second album and seen him perform live.
I tried to give the Niggy Tardust record a chance, I really did but I ended up throwing it out in the garbage.
Hoping he gets back to the spoken word and rap style he rocked before he linked up with Trent Reznor.
But that's what the life of a musician is, a little experimentation otherwise they lose every creative molecule in their bodies.

Saul is not a man... he is a metaphor for a man, a message, a eternal voice buzzing in your ear...

Agreed, he is the euphoric message to society's youth.

It's like you take Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Hank Shocklee, some German Krautrock and little bit of Mozart thrown into the kitchen sink and you get Niggy Tardust.
Nice.

I can't believe it matters how much of this is like hip hop or not. It's still an awesome sound and beat to me. I don't give an f what you call it.

most think that saul is trying to be like trent not because of his music but because of how it sounds... UNDERSTANDABLE WHEN TRENT PRODUCED THIS ALBUM YOU MORONS.. of course its gonna sound a little like reznor...
psaionyx 3 years ago 2
But that's the issue that I've always had with this album, not because it sounds like NIN, but because it's barely a hip-hop album. I'm all about progression and experimentation, but when the reason I started listening to an artist is compromised, I lose interest.
doganddice 3 years ago
if your all about progression and experimentation this should be right up your alley.. even hip hop has to change eventually.. saul is a poet before an artist.. it shouldn't matter how it sounds.. its something new to the genre.. at least he's is trying to break molds and make his mark be known personally i consider saul to be a supernatural hendrix/pac hybrid.. he's making hip hop move forward not stay where its been for the past 10 years.

poet IS artist .. but yeh i like music moving forward aswell

This is a cool video but there are much better songs on the Niggytardust album which deserve to be singles... "Break", "Raised To Be Lowered" or "WTF!" need videos like this one!!

New Age
Gainryusai 3 years ago

Get laid anytime this... year?
gosrisky 3 years ago
You are most original, mister Gosrisky. Big words ay? Are you trying to deconstruct these big words? Be my guest. Laid? Irrelevant! :) If you are confused about these big words in any way, then ask questions, what ever questions! Saul Williams thinks the same, prety much, though, about it, but he knows more of this than I do. There are no 'small' words to use when it comes to write that post. Deconstruct this.
MaBu888 3 years ago
Getting laid? What ever fits oneself best. Objectivity, subjectivity, interobjectivity, intersubjectivity. Are these big words big? Let me define them. Subjective is what ever occurs in one's consciousness, objective is the behavior of objects, the behavior of a human being under crack cocain. Intersubjective means culture - the sharing of individual interiors to create a collective but interior domain of dynamic knowledge. Interobjective is the sharing of exterirors of objective truths.

gosrisky, I admire how youre open about your ignorance to culture.
