how did a video with a chior singing their a**** off become a debate about homosexuality? Being gay is not wrong, & those of yoou who are not gay have no right to form an opinion!
@eastsidesfynest , It's not just wrong ,it's an abomination.....ALL sin is wrong INCLUDING that one! American political correctness might say it's ok, but the Bible doesn't. "I know the Bible is right....somebody's wrong!"
@lhotep yea and so are blended fabric, the comsumption of shellfish and women not secluding themselves for 7 day after menstration according to leviticus. You bible weilders kill me calling something an abomination. So i ahve some homework for you, go read your word and find out what you could b put to death for. This is who we are, we were born this way and we have a ticket to heaven just like any other christian.
@eastsidesfynest , I definitely have a right to form an opinion b-cuz I've been delivered from it. I would still be bound by homosexual behavior if was making excuses to hold on to it, but instead I sought deliverance and God did it!
@lhotep OOOK well blessed be the name, congratulations on your deliverance. I only hope that it was something that you wanted to do and not something you did bc the Pentecostals convinced u it was wrong. I dont make excuses to be "bound" by anything, i have been attracted to males since i was a child and NO i was not abused,,,this is who i am and i love me and if u feel the need to masquerade its on you. Being a radical is not for everyone.
Four reasons why I think there is no god; A) Total absence from the natural world. No sign of a god, before, during or after, natural disastres B) The absolute absence of favoritism towards believers. Even churches need lightning-rods to protect them from god. C) The absence of any reaction, when crimes are committed in his name. C) The suffering of the innocent. One could accept that the guilty must suffer, but children ???
TO KILL IT ALL SCRIPTURE SAY'S LET"EVERYTHING" THAT HAS BREATH PRAISE YE THE LORD. HIS MESSAGE HAS TO GET OUT RATHER THROUGH SONG DANCE PRAISE PREACH TEACH HE GIVES US ALL GIFTS(Talents) to use and express he brings us "ALL" OUT OF SOMETHING&IN DUE TIME&SEASON HE WILL REIGN SO I SAY GETTTTTTTTTT ITTTTTTTT AND DON'T STOP CUZ PRAISE IS WHAT IT IS CHUUCH Y'ALL
I think they sound great!!! the sound has changed though. and so have some of the singers who had the brilliant sound we remember! But they are still WAP....sing WAP!!!!
@loowkeye How can expression through music be gay? That doesn't even make any sense. Also, where does it say that Jesus isn't returning for gay people?
@cosmicviewer477 It's not that he's not coming back for gay people....because God does love them, but He Hates their sin... The bible also lists several characteristics of people who will NOT enter Heaven....one of which are gay/effeminate...
@loowkeye Where does it say that being gay is a sin? Also, who judges effeminate behavior? I know that men from certain cultures would be considered effeminate by American standards and vice versa. The challenge with Conservative Christianity is that it fails to speak about the Bible as it is revealed in modern times. This is why I believe that emergent Christianity will continue to grow because I strongly believe that the Holy Spirit has a new annointing for God's people.
@cosmicviewer477 Sir, The New anointing has nothing to do with the homosexuality. The Bible talks about in numerous scriptures about that spirit being an abomination to God. I do believe homosexuality is wrong, just like I believe fornication with a male and female that are NOT married is wrong. Does God love homosexuals? Yes He does. Does He love the spirit of homosexuality? NO He does Not. Those who make it seem that God is for it, theyre totally wrong and against the Will of God.
Now you mention about a new anointing, but we must remember that Jesus is the SAME yesterday, today, and forever. Immutable, so therefore we must not take situations of our own and try to change it to match the "newness" of today's society. I dont call that Conservative, I call it being HOLY, and IF we are to be a reflection of God then we must not pamper the fact of homosexuality. Yes people are gifted to do things and God uses who He wants, but gifts and callings are without repentance.
@AveryIam Um... Christianity has always changed to match modern times. Otherwise, it wouldn't be around today. I hope women in your church don't wear pants because that was considered a no-no just a few decades ago. Christianity HAS to change or it will become obsolete.
@cosmicviewer477 So are you comparing homosexuality (a spirit thats against God) to wearing pants (tradition, and something the CHURCH is against)? Its one thing If only AVERY said that homosexuality is not of God, then your point would be valid. However, this is something said by GOD in HIS word. Youre comparing apples to carrots. Yes God's love should be spread and thats the message, but we should be Holy and if we arent the bible says without it NO MAN shall see The Lord, Not in peace anyway.
@AveryIam Well, actually, Jesus, himself, never spoke of homosexuality at all. We also have to remember that when the ancient Jews spoke of abomination, it had a different meaning from what we think of abomination today. A lot of the things that Jews couldn't do were specific to the Jews to make them stand out against a hoard of other cultures that were vastly superior to theirs. However, when Christ came, that cultural distinction, for example, dietary restrictions, is no longer necessary.
@cosmicviewer477 So are you saying that only the things "Jesus" specifically spoke is what we should obey..and everything else negate? Do you believe Jesus speaks through people? How do you justify/interpret Corrinthians 6:9? There's a reason why it says "Do not be deceived...."God knew this day would come when what he HATES would "seemingly" become normal and acceptable.. (smh)
@AveryIam It actually does have everything to do with it. You just haven't realized it yet, but that's okay. You'll come around in time, and if you don't, that's okay, too. That old, crusty belief system will just stay to the wayside and whither away while the new emergent church moves forward with God's message of love. Simple as that.
This comment is posted with nothing but love. Now, I have read comments 1-60 and I just question of the bickering. Are we not losing sight of why our brothers and sisters are singing in the first place? Is the message that God uses them for, not more important? Do we not think that they are singing to glorify THe Father? The words should be the focus. in the end, God put it in these souls to sing praises unto Him. Performance is the least of focus as long as the message is Valid! Love all.
They are one of the best!!! People always talk about, they can't understand what they say, but I understand loud and clear! they have great control with their gifts!!! Keep up the good work and giving GOD the Glory..which that's what it's all about!! I LOVE YOU GUYS STR8 FROM HOUSTON, TX.!!!
Man, if thats how u feel then cool. I agree they do sound different from 15 years ago but thats JAMES HALL's choice b/c its JAMES HALL's group. they're good at what they do. this isnt a formal group of choral singers, Its WAP!!! they're gonna get up and holler! I dnt like EVERYBODYS music or style so i just dont listen but i do respect everybodys b/c its THEIRS!!! if you dont this particular group, then make your "corrections" with your own group and I'll respect your work just the same.
...and you probably use that phrase yourself in your closeted lifestyle. There are too many straight men dashing to the gates of gospel music, defending the gurls as you are at this moment! just a thought of mine! What do you teach and how do you treat your students who are using that term? I would hate to suffer your lectures! Well, maybe that's incorrect to say...you could be very thorough, even if you're completely lost in understanding what my original post meant!!! I'm over it!!!
and that's fine. that still takes nothing away from the VALIDITY of my ORIGINAL comment. i don't need the elucidation of anyone. i know who i am. yall be blessed. i'm over all of this pomp. at the end of the day...the vocal performance was was it was. that is the truth and you all can say whatever you want concerning me. i'll still be listening to James in the future. none of this was any slandor against his name or career. bless you babies!!!
being known has nothing to do with the validity of my comments concerning their vocal technique, or the lack thereof, when approaching some of these notes, tones, and the under-supporting belting that they are doing. as i said in my original comments, i still love W&P, from way back!! that however, does not mean that my ear doesn't recognize where things can be improved. why are church people so hooked on being known!! Christ was not here for popularity...why are we!!!! have a great day, THANKS!
no time soon. lemme open another can and ask why particularly do you ask? can the people still not comprehend my original comment. why is it that the church gurls can't take people unless they're telling them how fab and wondoo they are? we wanna talk about rightly dividing the truth, but can't take it when in comes...even in the most constructive of forms. all this milk the gurls have been drinking...i can't cope!!!
First!!! Notice in my message I was just Curious to know. A person with so much knowledge I would think surely would have worked on something or working on something. You put a very bold statement up here but you don't have to be defensive with everyone!!!! I asked a simple question that's all!! Second,WHO ARE YOU REFERENCING THAT "CHURCH GURL" COMMENT TO?? BECAUSE I DEF AM NOT A GURL!!!!!
and there are some things vocally that they approach incorrectly as many people in the church who are destroying the instruments that God gave them. And also, rightly dividing the truth can go beyond the scripture. And the gurls comment is a general slang term for people in general where I'm from. Clearly we see that you're a male so let's not take offense to what was a colloquialism. I was buying W&P CDs from day one and to me their sound has changed!
@couturesixfour How can you know that from watching a video? You can't "know" what technique a singer is using unless you've followed them IN PERSON and witnessed how they were trained. It depends on the individual. Some of these choir members, it's my understanding, have been with W&P for a very long time, and it doesn't seem as if their voices have been destroyed, as you say. The higher registers are meant to sound dramatic, and not necessarily operatic.
the higher registers are not meant to only be dramatic. it is possible to listen to a singer & observe technique. sound vocal production applies to all genres of music, in different understandings. the ONE universal understanding is that sound should be produced on "the air". this is true no matter where you go. if you look that up or actually take a class or session with a coach you'll see for yourself. education is absolutely fantastic!!
@couturesixfour I have to respectfully disagree. It seems that you are referring to style, not technique. W&P, Ricky Dillard and others use "belting" as a style or "sound", but one can only speculate as to what techniques they're using to arrive at that sound because you are not there with them. Also, singing "on the air", in my experience, refers to using a certain technique to get to a certain breathy, almost yawning form or sound. I've never heard that being used to refer a general technique.
@cosmicviewer477 style and technique are different, but i am speaking of how at many places the sound that most gospel singers produce is unfocused and many of their vowels are closed and screetchy!! they could use a course on covering the sound fully. diaphragmatic control is also key and knowing how the soft palate works. raising the soft palate softens tone and allows greater control of vibrato!!
@couturesixfour I wasn't specific. I meant to say that typically, James Hall uses the higher registers for dramatic effect. Of course, not all higher-registers must be sung using the style of belting, but in the case of W&P, it seems that it is used to conjur a gospelic -- as opposed to an operatic -- effect. However, once again, we can speculate as to which technique they're using to get that effect, but one can't really know, unless you he or she were there when W&P was being trained.
@cosmicviewer477 i do it all the time with my friends who are performers. we listen to all types. my degree is in acting, but my background is in music. i love the human voice and what it can do. my favorite music is gospel because of my faith, but i also love opera, choral, jazz (my second fav), blues, and my money maker is musical theatre. the theatre in me loves the aesthetic of W&P!!!
Third rightly dividing the truth is referring to the bible!! Not people's opinions on a particular subject. Even if you have all the schooling!!! Let's not use the scriptures out of context just to try to prove our point.
When you stated, "just curious to know", that came across as sarcasm, so please excuse me if I took that incorrectly? I don't have a project out yet, but that has nothing to do with what I originally said about the ensemble. Also, I wasn't being offensive w/everyone. I made one critique, which was RIGHT, about W&P and I was attacked! I have always liked this group, but that doesn't mean I don't hear things that can improve. A mature person would understand that. I've heard them live many times.
@jdrms9 and I wasn't using the scriptures out of context to prove a point. The critique was not an opinion. It is founded in scholarship and taught on the university level which gives it validity and good place in the world of performance. I worked with a group recorded on Pastor Caesar's last cd and they were told the same information concerning their sound and pitch and control of vibrato and everything. I knew that coming in the door, but they wouldn't take it from me, but respected others!!!
Lastly, if any other person of any particular fame or notoriety were to walk into their rehearsal and give them the same information that I did, they would go in for greater days and thank God for the insight! Why are church folk so ignorant when it comes to correction. If you go back, not that you have the time, to my comments you would see that they end with, "i still love W&P!" The thing that got to me was that people were acting like I was an afront and I clearly WAS NOT!!!
Man oh man! You need to stop being so defensive!! I just asked a question not trying to be smart I was really curious to know, But I guess because other people attacked you you thought I was attacking you, But I just wanted to know. 2) again that scripture is very open to truth, but you do not have the truth you voiced your opinion. 3) I think the Church girl term is very disrespectful! Because gurls aren't the only ones in church, That's in the same boat and the N word to me!
@jdrms9 I was not being disrespectful. I have no problems with your questions or your comments. I was just talking. If my colloquialisms are too harsh I do apologize, but there is no offense behind any of them. We won't argue the interpretation of that scripture any further either. Overall, I am not upset, again, not upset with anything that people had to say about me. I just didn't understand why people were lashing at a general comment. You're cool with me and "the gurls" is not said at you!!
please don't try to be deep with talk of discernment. this was a matter of common sense & reading w/understanding. did anyone not see that i gave them accolades & said that there was "no shade" in what i was saying. my critique wasn't an opinion to be exact. it was an evaluation of vocal technique and performance. i would, however, take the advice of "laying hands on no man suddenly!" Please choose your words differently next time. Let us thieve with better knowledge when we should be verbose!
And we as African Americans will tear each other EVERY chance we get. That's what we live for to dump on someone. So I will bow out of this conversation. But I definitely want to know the consequences for not choosing my words differently next time. That is very important and my real word "Law and Order" people are waiting to hear the response............Yes, we've already tracked the I.P. address... Yah take care and be safe out there.....
track all you want. that comment was so that you do just that, choose your words differently next time. why is everyone giving so much flack from a general opinion on attire and an honest critique of a performance. i'm only continuing this conversation because i like seeing peoples thought processes. this has all been in good humor to me!!! but my ideas are still the same. be blessed!!! bow on!!!
if you introduce the vibrato near the end of the note you are less likely to go flat or shift in pitch. the tenors aren't opening the vowel in the word "God" enough. they sound very dark against the ensemble. overall, the sections aren't blended as well as they could be. too many stray voices. W&P used to sound like a unit, live & recorded (i.e. "Too Close" was magnifique!). Should we just settle for volume? God forbid, technique & dynamics were given to vocal performance for a reason!!!
LOL! SAINTS... Yall are funnyLOL! WAP has been my fav for YEARS. They r DOPE! I just cant get with the gear half the time. In this vid, it looks like costumes. My mind goes back to Im gonna get you sukka when the midgets were hiding under the hats. LMBO Had to get that out. They still sound good. WAP helped change the game. Between James' writing, and John peters and Reggie Young... The GREATEST COMBINATION. Gospel needs to thank them three in particular. James needs to thank Richard Smallwood.
remy4life2 i kno who u talkn bout, u talkn about nikki, she is a killer soprano everyone has their bad days but she can take on a soprano section by herself when she feels like it
i love it, but i just don't get these big hats. they are distracting performance wise. you can't see faces, they are reflecting the lights, and why is mama pimped out over here in these stunnas in the alto section. she has always looked like she just ate too much at the buffet and doesn't really want to do this set...lol. i love youtube. i miss the old W&P. they blended better vocally and it wasn't a shouting match between the sections. but this is a video and not a live feed of the sound...so?
So.. I see here that you have many things to say about WAP and their technique and their style of dress and the way they eat etc. Where's your group? What is their signature? WAP is known and loved across this nation for their style of dress and their technique in singing. I think you should focus more on what is being ministered rather than allowing the enemy to distract you with their garments. And about the lady in the shades, please refrain from speaking ill of her.. Thanks!
if you would pull your head out of the cloud of adulation that you have for W&P you will be able to discern that my comments are all in humor and no pun is intended in what i say. my opinion is my opinion. i have purchased Hall's CDs for years and supported them when they have performed in my area. and as i said, they did sound better back in the day. their attire is off to me and that will remain my conclusion of the matter. you have a great day sweetie! but do come up for air some time!
...and it IS odd for her to sing shades. i have heard people voice in concerts that they are distracted by this choice AND she does have a drained countenance whenever you see pics or performances, live or recorded. these are basic observations that maybe james should have told her down through the years. performance is more than the voice. as they give much energy to spectacle...so should she to the brightening of her face when singing!! the girls swear wanting to read!!
Ok it is evident that you'd love to go back and forth, blah blah blah... I will not do it, however I will say this; Something as simple as shades can only distract one when they focus on them, and allow the shades to distract them. Secondly, im a man not a girl so watch what you say. And since you have all of these suggestions, maybe you should contact Professor Hall.. lets see how he feels about your "issues".. Until then, the world will be awaiting your tired, "perfect" group!
"the girls" is slang or jargon!! it can be used to denote a person, place, or thing, but if you feel the need to defend your pseudo-sense of secured masculinity then you go right ahead. and if i am correct, you replied to MY post. i could care less whether you draw your last breath after i type this message. you have a great day and i don't think i could get through to james because you're so hard on his jock. it is evident that your level of reading comprehension is that of a fourth grader...
and could someone let me know what university of higher learning has hired james to teach courses or classes. the girls love to give titles. is he really a professor? no jokes on that one. what are his degrees, yes degrees (plural). you surely cannot teach on the collegiate level w/o a masters or a terminal degree in some area.
but here again...if you review the posts i have made, they have all been in humor...no shade or disrespect. but you, i see, also "look through a glass darkly!!!"
Whoa whoa whoa hold the phone... I am a member of worship and praise. For your information, James Hall teaches at Berkley, therefore he is a professor. The way we dress happens to be our style, if you don't like it, stop looking at our videos, thanks great!
domdada, are you speaking of the Berklee School in Boston? the only other Berkeley is in San Fran. give clarity to your defense. professor means you're hired at a university as an adjunct, associate, visiting or full professor and he isn't listed as any of those from their site! what is his degree, it's never stated? i think you should also take a class in reading comprehension. i said above there was no shade. they can wear moomoos, jellys, and sandals for all i care...it's still gaudy!!!
and the professor, my dear, should inform the sopranos that if they open the "I" vowel on the word "is" when they are in their upper register they won't sound as though they are screeching or accessing parts of their register that sound unpleasant. don't do me on the education level. know your facts before you speak out...but please get me that information on his professorship! you know the church will give folk letters who haven't earned them. lemme know though...thanks...muah!!! you da BEST!!!
and please end your attempts to hang with me on this topic. your grounds and basis of aggravation are shallow and biased!! it is clear that you love the man, but don't make a jester of yourself because of that. people will always carry their own opinions and ideals. i also do not need a group to elucidate any feelings that i have concerning the sound or performance abilities of W&P!!! i receive a check for performing. i'm not some sycophant seeking the approval of the masses!!!
Don't do that. (big smile); as in asking where is his group. You function @ a higher level than that. A person not having what they are critiquing doesn't negate their opinion; it's just their opinion and perhaps the wrong venue to voice it.....My spirit says you are at a higher level than that.....You be blessed as you already ARE!!!! Amen..........Let it rolll.......
does anyone have a comprehension level above a six year old? my opinions were just that. now if you all sat and listened to hall give a critique of something you would consider it valid and of the greatest expertise. why are 'church' folk such respecters of person? this higher level you speak of does not exist. the child was being caddy because someone said something about his precious doll. as i said, IT WAS NO SHADE! that's why people don't like church gurls nowadays. so swift to be nasty!!!
You're right. Opinions are indeed opinions. Discernment should drive our opinions and what venue to display them. Sorry to have bothered you. And of course, our caucasion friends are laughing at us because yet again, even in a spiritual realm, "we're going after each
other". And that's what some of them want, and the truth of it, they don't have to do anything to get rid of us; we eagerly do it to ourselves. I wasn't attempting to be nasty, actually I thought I was very complimentary in that, your care for people functions at a high level. Discernment should have kicked in with me and said, "stay away."
darling discernment deals with matters of the heart as prophecy deals with matters of the spirit &what do white people have to do with this? i was speaking of people being nasty in general. i didn't use the term "you". i was speaking of how you placed me at a level lower than the child who asked me where my group was! i'm not mad at anyone because no one here cuts my check when i perform. had the gurls read they would have seen that my comments were completely objective & unbiased!!! that's all!
james hall and WAP is just it i don't kno wat else 2 say and those WindMill hat's i love them i love them i love them, and those sopranos tickled me at 1:23-1:29 they did there thing
YES!!! to the 2 sopranos and wil at 1:23-1:29...they know they are barking!! AAGGGHHH!!! watch how the one in the gold hat shakes her head at the end of the note! I love it!
i loved the hats and the dus my favorite alto is Tanisha Bond-williams. they sang for the blood of god. love all of worship and praise they sing in and out of season. ppl should not hate on their style of dress thats what they do the hats are fab all the hats in the room were cool not all i liked but everyone on that stage i loved. i love this choir they are top in my book
Everyone is dressed... But I think Danielle won best dressesd that night... I love them all tho... That gold ruffle dress and purple hat is BAD!!! U HEAR ME!
i live for those hats...ecpecially that black sky scrapper!!!! Does anyone know who made them for them cause we have good hat makers here in NC but no where like the ones in NYC!!!
i have always loved this arrangement, but they were slipping in and out of pitch on the sustained "God" and the tenors were really pushing on "God" at about 2:40 and could have benefited from raising their soft palate relaxing on the note versus overproducing it! i love the sound that W&P had back in the day with this CD. i remember them doing "He Reigns" on the Stellars...hot! also, there vibrato used to be more balanced throughout SAT!! now single voices stick out!! i still live though!!
Okay, let me stop and applaud you. That was the DUMBEST Youtube comment I have ever seen on this site--and I've seen many. Yes, you're going to be the paranomasia to every conversation I have about the completely asinine comments people leave on videos. I mean really; do you take pleasure in purposely broadcasting your ignorance to thousands of strangers? I suggest you stay in school.
it's funny that you used that major SAT word, do you have any left, since you were the brunt or the pun of that comment. good for you. could you please correctly use that word in a sentence for us. please look in the new testament and gain an understanding of how Paul spoke to those who could not handle the meat of the truth. that is what that statement meant sir. you'll mature one day! but have fun being a follower in all that you do.
Look at you using a dictionary! *Applauds you again.* And yes, I knew what you were referring to with that erroneous "milk drinker" statement. Please, tell me: what does the Bible say about homosexuality? "No shade"?! I've seen and heard that phrase used by nearly all of my students of that orientation. Here's a thought: before you point out the faults in others, make sure your own house is right.
I used no dictionary. You aren't the only educated individual on the planet. The old testament states that homosexuality is a sin. The New doesn't make a clear claim against it. Paul spoke of how the men of Sodom turned from the natural use of a woman and turned to themselves, but gave no condemnation of homosexuality. If you find another in the new covenant that speaks against it please let me know. It won't change my natural proclivity, but I'd like to see you find it!
Great observations... Any group has to be careful to retain pitch accuracy and listen to the neighboring voices through the added dynamics [in order to blend well throughout a song]. I'm with you; because I still love it too. LOL!
thank you so much sir. people think i'm speaking out of hatred or envy. these are the same things that i have heard clinicians tell gospel choirs down through the years. an untrained ear won't hear these things, but improving upon them would help their sound greatly. i've heard them live for years and they've often had this problem, but again, i still love them overall. i'm just very objective because i've spent thousands on my own voice, not just squalling at rehearsals muscling out notes!!!
@couturesixfour I agree with you, here, about the tenors softening the tone a bit. I think that sometimes Hall seems to pick his strongest performers to do smaller venues, and it seems that the microphoning was a bit uneven as well. Sound guys/girls can sometimes ruin a great performance. Lol
@cosmicviewer477 but even the strongest of voices have to understand dynamics and how to adjust according to their space. that is one of the first things that you learn with performance. if the sound technician has you too loud you should pull back from the microphone. stray voices ruin the blend and possibility of any type of wonderful overtone!
@couturesixfour This is true. One of the things that is lacking in modern choral performances -- and you mentioned this before -- is listening to your "neighbor". I remember a choir director always telling us that. Many times performers get wrapped up in their own technique and form and haven't been trained to listen, to make sure that the tone is blended with the others in their section.
ppl get older and they have kids, church work and families so i guess they decide to sit down on alot of the concerts etc...and yes the one n the purple hat is an old time original shes been with them for years.and the one in the red hat n the sopranoes and the one in the big blue hat in the sopranoes and the one in the purple dress in the altos and the one on the end in the altos
I was there that night and the hats were endless... I never experience anything like it... The house was soooo dressed... And they singed till the Heavens opened up...
THE BOMB!!! I love this song and video so much, I could listen all day...

GAYYYY.....Jesus is sooo coming back for a church...and this one has definitely missed the mark!
loowkeye 1 year ago
@loowkeye How can expression through music be gay? That doesn't even make any sense. Also, where does it say that Jesus isn't returning for gay people?
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 It's not that he's not coming back for gay people....because God does love them, but He Hates their sin... The bible also lists several characteristics of people who will NOT enter Heaven....one of which are gay/effeminate...
loowkeye 1 year ago
@loowkeye Where does it say that being gay is a sin? Also, who judges effeminate behavior? I know that men from certain cultures would be considered effeminate by American standards and vice versa. The challenge with Conservative Christianity is that it fails to speak about the Bible as it is revealed in modern times. This is why I believe that emergent Christianity will continue to grow because I strongly believe that the Holy Spirit has a new annointing for God's people.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 Sir, The New anointing has nothing to do with the homosexuality. The Bible talks about in numerous scriptures about that spirit being an abomination to God. I do believe homosexuality is wrong, just like I believe fornication with a male and female that are NOT married is wrong. Does God love homosexuals? Yes He does. Does He love the spirit of homosexuality? NO He does Not. Those who make it seem that God is for it, theyre totally wrong and against the Will of God.
AveryIam 1 year ago
Now you mention about a new anointing, but we must remember that Jesus is the SAME yesterday, today, and forever. Immutable, so therefore we must not take situations of our own and try to change it to match the "newness" of today's society. I dont call that Conservative, I call it being HOLY, and IF we are to be a reflection of God then we must not pamper the fact of homosexuality. Yes people are gifted to do things and God uses who He wants, but gifts and callings are without repentance.
AveryIam 1 year ago
@AveryIam Um... Christianity has always changed to match modern times. Otherwise, it wouldn't be around today. I hope women in your church don't wear pants because that was considered a no-no just a few decades ago. Christianity HAS to change or it will become obsolete.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 So are you comparing homosexuality (a spirit thats against God) to wearing pants (tradition, and something the CHURCH is against)? Its one thing If only AVERY said that homosexuality is not of God, then your point would be valid. However, this is something said by GOD in HIS word. Youre comparing apples to carrots. Yes God's love should be spread and thats the message, but we should be Holy and if we arent the bible says without it NO MAN shall see The Lord, Not in peace anyway.
AveryIam 1 year ago
@AveryIam Well, actually, Jesus, himself, never spoke of homosexuality at all. We also have to remember that when the ancient Jews spoke of abomination, it had a different meaning from what we think of abomination today. A lot of the things that Jews couldn't do were specific to the Jews to make them stand out against a hoard of other cultures that were vastly superior to theirs. However, when Christ came, that cultural distinction, for example, dietary restrictions, is no longer necessary.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 So are you saying that only the things "Jesus" specifically spoke is what we should obey..and everything else negate? Do you believe Jesus speaks through people? How do you justify/interpret Corrinthians 6:9? There's a reason why it says "Do not be deceived...."God knew this day would come when what he HATES would "seemingly" become normal and acceptable.. (smh)
loowkeye 1 year ago
@AveryIam It actually does have everything to do with it. You just haven't realized it yet, but that's okay. You'll come around in time, and if you don't, that's okay, too. That old, crusty belief system will just stay to the wayside and whither away while the new emergent church moves forward with God's message of love. Simple as that.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 Are you trying to say that homosexuality is ok in God's eyes?

This comment is posted with nothing but love. Now, I have read comments 1-60 and I just question of the bickering. Are we not losing sight of why our brothers and sisters are singing in the first place? Is the message that God uses them for, not more important? Do we not think that they are singing to glorify THe Father? The words should be the focus. in the end, God put it in these souls to sing praises unto Him. Performance is the least of focus as long as the message is Valid! Love all.

...and you probably use that phrase yourself in your closeted lifestyle. I'm over it!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
sweetie, while you are making all of these comments, no one even knows who you are. But they know James, thanks, great!
domdada23 2 years ago
and that's fine. that still takes nothing away from the VALIDITY of my ORIGINAL comment. i don't need the elucidation of anyone. i know who i am. yall be blessed. i'm over all of this pomp. at the end of the day...the vocal performance was was it was. that is the truth and you all can say whatever you want concerning me. i'll still be listening to James in the future. none of this was any slandor against his name or career. bless you babies!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
being known has nothing to do with the validity of my comments concerning their vocal technique, or the lack thereof, when approaching some of these notes, tones, and the under-supporting belting that they are doing. as i said in my original comments, i still love W&P, from way back!! that however, does not mean that my ear doesn't recognize where things can be improved. why are church people so hooked on being known!! Christ was not here for popularity...why are we!!!! have a great day, THANKS!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Hey couturesixfour when is your album coming out? Just curious to know.
jdrms9 2 years ago
no time soon. lemme open another can and ask why particularly do you ask? can the people still not comprehend my original comment. why is it that the church gurls can't take people unless they're telling them how fab and wondoo they are? we wanna talk about rightly dividing the truth, but can't take it when in comes...even in the most constructive of forms. all this milk the gurls have been drinking...i can't cope!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
BECAUSE I DEF AM NOT A GURL!!!!!
jdrms9 2 years ago
and there are some things vocally that they approach incorrectly as many people in the church who are destroying the instruments that God gave them. And also, rightly dividing the truth can go beyond the scripture. And the gurls comment is a general slang term for people in general where I'm from. Clearly we see that you're a male so let's not take offense to what was a colloquialism. I was buying W&P CDs from day one and to me their sound has changed!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
@couturesixfour How can you know that from watching a video? You can't "know" what technique a singer is using unless you've followed them IN PERSON and witnessed how they were trained. It depends on the individual. Some of these choir members, it's my understanding, have been with W&P for a very long time, and it doesn't seem as if their voices have been destroyed, as you say. The higher registers are meant to sound dramatic, and not necessarily operatic.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
the higher registers are not meant to only be dramatic. it is possible to listen to a singer & observe technique. sound vocal production applies to all genres of music, in different understandings. the ONE universal understanding is that sound should be produced on "the air". this is true no matter where you go. if you look that up or actually take a class or session with a coach you'll see for yourself. education is absolutely fantastic!!

I've never heard that being used to refer a general technique.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 style and technique are different, but i am speaking of how at many places the sound that most gospel singers produce is unfocused and many of their vowels are closed and screetchy!! they could use a course on covering the sound fully. diaphragmatic control is also key and knowing how the soft palate works. raising the soft palate softens tone and allows greater control of vibrato!!
couturesixfour 1 year ago
@couturesixfour I concede. You are absolutely right.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@couturesixfour I wasn't specific. I meant to say that typically, James Hall uses the higher registers for dramatic effect. Of course, not all higher-registers must be sung using the style of belting, but in the case of W&P, it seems that it is used to conjur a gospelic -- as opposed to an operatic -- effect. However, once again, we can speculate as to which technique they're using to get that effect, but one can't really know, unless you he or she were there when W&P was being trained.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@couturesixfour You know, I think you and I would have a blast just sitting around and listening to gospel choir/choral music all day. Lol.
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
@cosmicviewer477 i do it all the time with my friends who are performers. we listen to all types. my degree is in acting, but my background is in music. i love the human voice and what it can do. my favorite music is gospel because of my faith, but i also love opera, choral, jazz (my second fav), blues, and my money maker is musical theatre. the theatre in me loves the aesthetic of W&P!!!
couturesixfour 1 year ago
Third rightly dividing the truth is referring to the bible!! Not people's opinions on a particular subject. Even if you have all the schooling!!! Let's not use the scriptures out of context just to try to prove our point.
jdrms9 2 years ago
When you stated, "just curious to know", that came across as sarcasm, so please excuse me if I took that incorrectly? I don't have a project out yet, but that has nothing to do with what I originally said about the ensemble. Also, I wasn't being offensive w/everyone. I made one critique, which was RIGHT, about W&P and I was attacked! I have always liked this group, but that doesn't mean I don't hear things that can improve. A mature person would understand that. I've heard them live many times.
couturesixfour 2 years ago
@jdrms9 and I wasn't using the scriptures out of context to prove a point. The critique was not an opinion. It is founded in scholarship and taught on the university level which gives it validity and good place in the world of performance. I worked with a group recorded on Pastor Caesar's last cd and they were told the same information concerning their sound and pitch and control of vibrato and everything. I knew that coming in the door, but they wouldn't take it from me, but respected others!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Lastly, if any other person of any particular fame or notoriety were to walk into their rehearsal and give them the same information that I did, they would go in for greater days and thank God for the insight! Why are church folk so ignorant when it comes to correction. If you go back, not that you have the time, to my comments you would see that they end with, "i still love W&P!" The thing that got to me was that people were acting like I was an afront and I clearly WAS NOT!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Because gurls aren't the only ones in church, That's in the same boat and the N word to me!
jdrms9 2 years ago
@jdrms9 I was not being disrespectful. I have no problems with your questions or your comments. I was just talking. If my colloquialisms are too harsh I do apologize, but there is no offense behind any of them. We won't argue the interpretation of that scripture any further either. Overall, I am not upset, again, not upset with anything that people had to say about me. I just didn't understand why people were lashing at a general comment. You're cool with me and "the gurls" is not said at you!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
please don't try to be deep with talk of discernment. this was a matter of common sense & reading w/understanding. did anyone not see that i gave them accolades & said that there was "no shade" in what i was saying. my critique wasn't an opinion to be exact. it was an evaluation of vocal technique and performance. i would, however, take the advice of "laying hands on no man suddenly!" Please choose your words differently next time. Let us thieve with better knowledge when we should be verbose!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
And we as African Americans will tear each other EVERY chance we get. That's what we live for to dump on someone. So I will bow out of this conversation. But I definitely want to know the consequences for not choosing my words differently next time. That is very important and my real word "Law and Order" people are waiting to hear the response............Yes, we've already tracked the I.P. address... Yah take care and be safe out there.....
lllewis65 2 years ago
track all you want. that comment was so that you do just that, choose your words differently next time. why is everyone giving so much flack from a general opinion on attire and an honest critique of a performance. i'm only continuing this conversation because i like seeing peoples thought processes. this has all been in good humor to me!!! but my ideas are still the same. be blessed!!! bow on!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
if you introduce the vibrato near the end of the note you are less likely to go flat or shift in pitch. the tenors aren't opening the vowel in the word "God" enough. they sound very dark against the ensemble. overall, the sections aren't blended as well as they could be. too many stray voices. W&P used to sound like a unit, live & recorded (i.e. "Too Close" was magnifique!). Should we just settle for volume? God forbid, technique & dynamics were given to vocal performance for a reason!!!

i love it, but i just don't get these big hats. they are distracting performance wise. you can't see faces, they are reflecting the lights, and why is mama pimped out over here in these stunnas in the alto section. she has always looked like she just ate too much at the buffet and doesn't really want to do this set...lol. i love youtube. i miss the old W&P. they blended better vocally and it wasn't a shouting match between the sections. but this is a video and not a live feed of the sound...so?
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Thanks!
zayk88 2 years ago
if you would pull your head out of the cloud of adulation that you have for W&P you will be able to discern that my comments are all in humor and no pun is intended in what i say. my opinion is my opinion. i have purchased Hall's CDs for years and supported them when they have performed in my area. and as i said, they did sound better back in the day. their attire is off to me and that will remain my conclusion of the matter. you have a great day sweetie! but do come up for air some time!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
...and it IS odd for her to sing shades. i have heard people voice in concerts that they are distracted by this choice AND she does have a drained countenance whenever you see pics or performances, live or recorded. these are basic observations that maybe james should have told her down through the years. performance is more than the voice. as they give much energy to spectacle...so should she to the brightening of her face when singing!! the girls swear wanting to read!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Ok it is evident that you'd love to go back and forth, blah blah blah... I will not do it, however I will say this; Something as simple as shades can only distract one when they focus on them, and allow the shades to distract them. Secondly, im a man not a girl so watch what you say. And since you have all of these suggestions, maybe you should contact Professor Hall.. lets see how he feels about your "issues".. Until then, the world will be awaiting your tired, "perfect" group!
zayk88 2 years ago
"the girls" is slang or jargon!! it can be used to denote a person, place, or thing, but if you feel the need to defend your pseudo-sense of secured masculinity then you go right ahead. and if i am correct, you replied to MY post. i could care less whether you draw your last breath after i type this message. you have a great day and i don't think i could get through to james because you're so hard on his jock. it is evident that your level of reading comprehension is that of a fourth grader...
couturesixfour 2 years ago
and could someone let me know what university of higher learning has hired james to teach courses or classes. the girls love to give titles. is he really a professor? no jokes on that one. what are his degrees, yes degrees (plural). you surely cannot teach on the collegiate level w/o a masters or a terminal degree in some area.
but here again...if you review the posts i have made, they have all been in humor...no shade or disrespect. but you, i see, also "look through a glass darkly!!!"
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Whoa whoa whoa hold the phone... I am a member of worship and praise. For your information, James Hall teaches at Berkley, therefore he is a professor. The way we dress happens to be our style, if you don't like it, stop looking at our videos, thanks great!
domdada23 2 years ago
domdada, are you speaking of the Berklee School in Boston? the only other Berkeley is in San Fran. give clarity to your defense. professor means you're hired at a university as an adjunct, associate, visiting or full professor and he isn't listed as any of those from their site! what is his degree, it's never stated? i think you should also take a class in reading comprehension. i said above there was no shade. they can wear moomoos, jellys, and sandals for all i care...it's still gaudy!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
and the professor, my dear, should inform the sopranos that if they open the "I" vowel on the word "is" when they are in their upper register they won't sound as though they are screeching or accessing parts of their register that sound unpleasant. don't do me on the education level. know your facts before you speak out...but please get me that information on his professorship! you know the church will give folk letters who haven't earned them. lemme know though...thanks...muah!!! you da BEST!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
and please end your attempts to hang with me on this topic. your grounds and basis of aggravation are shallow and biased!! it is clear that you love the man, but don't make a jester of yourself because of that. people will always carry their own opinions and ideals. i also do not need a group to elucidate any feelings that i have concerning the sound or performance abilities of W&P!!! i receive a check for performing. i'm not some sycophant seeking the approval of the masses!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
Don't do that. (big smile); as in asking where is his group. You function @ a higher level than that. A person not having what they are critiquing doesn't negate their opinion; it's just their opinion and perhaps the wrong venue to voice it.....My spirit says you are at a higher level than that.....You be blessed as you already ARE!!!! Amen..........Let it rolll.......
lllewis65 2 years ago
does anyone have a comprehension level above a six year old? my opinions were just that. now if you all sat and listened to hall give a critique of something you would consider it valid and of the greatest expertise. why are 'church' folk such respecters of person? this higher level you speak of does not exist. the child was being caddy because someone said something about his precious doll. as i said, IT WAS NO SHADE! that's why people don't like church gurls nowadays. so swift to be nasty!!!
couturesixfour 2 years ago
You're right. Opinions are indeed opinions. Discernment should drive our opinions and what venue to display them. Sorry to have bothered you. And of course, our caucasion friends are laughing at us because yet again, even in a spiritual realm, "we're going after each
lllewis65 2 years ago
other". And that's what some of them want, and the truth of it, they don't have to do anything to get rid of us; we eagerly do it to ourselves. I wasn't attempting to be nasty, actually I thought I was very complimentary in that, your care for people functions at a high level. Discernment should have kicked in with me and said, "stay away."
lllewis65 2 years ago
darling discernment deals with matters of the heart as prophecy deals with matters of the spirit &what do white people have to do with this? i was speaking of people being nasty in general. i didn't use the term "you". i was speaking of how you placed me at a level lower than the child who asked me where my group was! i'm not mad at anyone because no one here cuts my check when i perform. had the gurls read they would have seen that my comments were completely objective & unbiased!!! that's all!

i have always loved this arrangement, but they were slipping in and out of pitch on the sustained "God" and the tenors were really pushing on "God" at about 2:40 and could have benefited from raising their soft palate relaxing on the note versus overproducing it! i love the sound that W&P had back in the day with this CD. i remember them doing "He Reigns" on the Stellars...hot! also, there vibrato used to be more balanced throughout SAT!! now single voices stick out!! i still live though!!

it's funny that you used that major SAT word, do you have any left, since you were the brunt or the pun of that comment. good for you. could you please correctly use that word in a sentence for us. please look in the new testament and gain an understanding of how Paul spoke to those who could not handle the meat of the truth. that is what that statement meant sir. you'll mature one day! but have fun being a follower in all that you do.

It won't change my natural proclivity, but I'd like to see you find it!

get some vocal training!!! you'll see the validity of my comments. education is key, vital, and everlasting!!!

Lol
cosmicviewer477 1 year ago
