As a professional photographer, when I take commercial photographs, I often have to photoshop out trademarks that appear in photos. I figure the news agency that published this did the same, by removing the trademark JDL to avoid intellectual rights problems.

What I learned from this video: Space probes can never have their paint job changed between photo shoots and launch. Promotional videos never get details wrong. Lens flare does not exist, and a screw looks like a sort of white streak, also, you can pick a screw out of some dust without disturbing it at all or leaving a mark. Newspapers never make mistakes ever.

Infrared. It's easier to use the infrared filter for one photo than to take three separate photos using the red, green then blue filters and composing the photos together.

What if it wasn't anything on the soil but something on the camera? Or some noise during transmission of the photo? Or maybe the light was reflecting off the camera lens and shining on the screw in the first picture? There are numerous reasons for the screw to not be there in the second photo, thinking some stage hand found it and picked it up is ridiculous.

For your information, I was trying to get in touch with one of those Australian guys at the Deep Space Network. In case you don't know, all the radio telescopes in Australia are owned by NASA. First of all, the contact details I was given put me in touch with a completely different NASA official. Second, that NASA official never returned any of my phone calls.

NASA gives a press release to someone like the Associated Press, news agencies are looking for stories, find one from NASA think it's interesting and they print it. Some other agency might pick up the story from that agency and print it too.

The JPL logo is probably not visible on the spirit rover in that photo because of the filters it uses. The photo on earth was most likely taken with a standard camera you can go buy at a photography store. The camera on spirit is different, this could be an infrared photo and it'd be entirely possible that the white background became "transparent" and the gray you're seeing is the underlying metal. The red JPL logo would blend into that.

Or they removed it before sending it to mars.

Jarrah. If the two ground photos from Phoenix that you compare are indexed in the correct chronological order by NASA, then I suppose the argument would be that the screw was blown away in the interim by the strong Martian winds.

However, since the atmosphere on Mars is extremely thin, this seems unlikely - especially considering the loose piles of dirt around the scooped-out trenches in the Telegraph picture have remained in place.

Its a spring! This spring was released from the lander when the bio-barrier was opened to free the Robotic Arm. Unless NASA somehow reversed the image, Jarrahs first image of this with the yellow circle, shows the spring to be on the left side of the landing gear,then in the other images Jarrah shows ans it to be on the left the say it is gone but should be on the left... so as I said, unless NASA somehow reversed the image then Jarrah is mistaken.

If you take the very first image with the yellow circle and turn it 90 degrees so that the landing gear in all 3 images are facing the same direction, then the spring is on the left side of the landing gear in NASA's circle image with the yellow circle. Jarrah says it should be to the right of the gear in the other two images..which is impossible!

Although the 14:41.23 shot is taken from a slightly different angle and closer to the ground than the earlier 14:39:37; the surface area shown in the later frame still appears large enough to have had to show the spring/screw had it remained in its former position relative to the landing pad, the small rocks and other features.

Yes, I even went to the source and copied the Hi-res images and I myself did not see a spring in any either the 14:41 image or the 14:39 image.

My whole point was that the lighter NASA image at 5:58 with the yellow circle showing the spring location, shows it to be on the left side of the landing gear, as the gear is facing toward the bottom of the screen in that image and is facing up in the 14:41 and 14:39 images, unless NASA/JPL somehow reversed the image at 5:58.

Michael obviously something has changed. The image at 5:58 has the screw on the left side of the pad not the right.There is also a stone right next to the spring and there is hardly any soil on the foot pad of the gear. The images taken at 14:39 and 14:41 show a lot of soil on the pad and no stone.There is something faintly seen in 19:39 but still no stone next to it as you see in the image at 5:58 in the video.
