  • How impressive. I typically cox a Novice Girls 8, oh dear Lord this looks so good in comparison!

  • Practice makes perfect... even though this was FAR from perfect. But a good time, for sure. Make sure to have fun in which ever boat you're in.

  • how long is this event again? like meter wise

  • The HOCR is three miles, which converts to 4828 meters.

  • pretty impressive intensity from the cox.

now if only they were rowing together...

    :(

5seat is rowing in her own world. bow is always late for catch...even latter than the rest of them...

    :)

  • @ZamolxisReborn genius thats 4 seat. and no ones perfect. obviously they are really good to be in the HOTC. dont be hatin. good coxin and rowin! <3

  • pretty impressive intensity from the cox.

now if only they were rowing together...

    :(

  • Is it me or was 4 seat rolling up late sometimes?

  • @nellings6 Probably 95% of the time, actually. We never could break her of the habit of always doing the flip catch - nor of her propensity to feather with both hands for that matter. That's a combo just gagging to make the rower go deep. Great eye, btw!

  • I am a coxswain and I row on the Charles all the time! It was cool to hear some great coxing things on my very own river :)

  • FREEEEE MONEYYYYY

  • thanks for posting this! have my first charles this year and i was a bit intimidated when reading about the course and looking at the map but this video took away some of my fears! definitely helpful. what place did you guys end up getting?

  • Excellent. My main reason for recording and posting the race was for coxes to get a true look at the course to match what they see on maps. Have a great race this year: no matter how many times you participate in the HOCR, you will always remember your first race there. This course is always challenging but ALWAYS a blast. Good luck, do well, and HAVE FUN!

ps - We finished 7th that year. The boat was slacking a bit until after Weeks Bridge. They went for it after that - too late, though.

  • damn! the set got a tiny bit shaky at some bits but the ratio was spot on! good work. howd you place?

  • LOVE the coxing - thanks for recording this, you're an inspiring coach. I'm actually thinking about using power 10s to get through my childbirth labor this month, can't think of a time more powerful than my years on the Charles to get me through the contractions!

  • 4 seat needs to square earlier imo to get blade longer on the water. Other than that awesome vid!!!

  • Thanks for posting these; I'm rowing a 2x in this year's Charles and have never been to Boston before. This will hopefully help to familiarize me with the course.

  • I'm sorry that this is not the view you'll get, but I'm glad it will help.

By the way - the most amazing navigation I've ever seen at the HOCR was the winner of the master men's 2x last year: I was watching on The Big Turn, and those guys took EVERY buoy under the riggers and completely against the hull. I was watching where I was going, and I didn't dare get that close!

Good luck, and have fun - it's a great regatta. Let me know how you do!

  • how did you film this, and thanks it helped i have a race tomorrow

  • Glad this helped - it was one of my main purposes of recording the whole race and posting it all raw format.

How I filmed it: I own an ATC3K pod camera, and I strapped it to my head for the race. I built a pylon to mount it to the hull behind me but decided it would be too much of a distraction to my crew and went with cox's view instead.

Good luck in your race, and let me know if you have any questions you think I could help with. Row on!

  • Very cool video. Intense.

You and your viewers may be interested in the smart pod, a unique video mount that attaches anywhere, maybe on the end of your shell. Could make for a great video angle. Please check it out.

  • Nice mounting device you've designed! That would have helped a lot! I spent about a month going through designs myself, including modified tri-pods and a few versions of a single pylon mounted behind me. Weight and stability vs. camera position were the issues: 40"+ in height with minimal weight. The light designs were not stable while the heavy ones ended up flexing the hull where we attached them - resulting in no stability. Ran out of time and just strapped it to my noggin. Oh well.

  • Just noticed 3 seat is flip catching.

Other than that, this is gold. Couldn't find anything else nearly as good as this to help me train up for the HotC.

  • Edit: 4 seat

  • Great eye you have! The flip-catch is something the rower in 4 seemed to revert to in races (guess it's her comfort zone). She also feathers with both hands - both habits that never seem to get broken. Oh well.

Glad this helped. It was one of my main intentions to film and put up raw so that folks who had never seen this course would have some good reference; nothing beats raw footage. Let me know if you have any ?'s regarding HOCR, and good luck!

  • @LV2PLA As a cox I am trying to learn new ways to help my master's rowers, and as a previous rower (lw 4+ and open weight novice b) I can feel them in some circumstances. For instance with the late square. Usually I tend to be late on the square and early to the catch. I often feel rushed myself even though I am primarily a bow rower.

  • It was soooo hot!

  • what bow number were you?

  • We were Bow 7, Upper Valley Rowing Foundation.

  • Oh ok so I guess you were in the 40+... I coxed #7 in the 50+ for Prince William Rowing Club.
