Check out Virginia Luques version to see how two excellent guitarists interpret the piece in very different ways. It's interesting to hear and compare their subtleties. I learned something from both of them
He's a lot better than me, but watch John Williams playing this piece which is more commonly known as Asturias and the difference is tremendous. The chord changes with williams are so fast and smooth they are almost unbelievabe.
Pepe is a master, but his playing of Spanish music, like this, just doesn´t compare to someone, say, like John Williams: in terms of tone, phrasing and sound. Compare video with J. Williams on Youtube, you´ll see the difference.
His Spanish album (including the valses poéticos) is something to listen to. I disagree (his sound is as perfect as can be...one or another may not like it...but its much better, at least, than this). I think Pepe´s sound here (perhaps the audio) is not representative.
@AlexM1979 : Did you have an aneurysm? Do you realize how incredibly stupid you make yourself sound? Even the great Juan Mercadal considered Williams to be a fantastic performer. Please load your brain before shooting your mouth.
This is the earltroach video, it was in the related pieces window, much better recording technically (of course) so the guitar sounding better may be partly due to that...
my only negative comment is that i found his tempo faltering throughout the piece. i love this piece, but sadly didnt feel moved by this performance or interpretation.
I question the year of that hauser. In 1927, Hauser's guitars would've sounded less Spanish than this. Is it 1972? That would make more sense. Hermann Hauser I didn't see Segovia's Ramirez guitar and Llobet's Torres guitar till like 1928 or something. Till then, he made a munich and a Vienna model and they had a dryer sound with a smaller tone pallet. A guitar made by him in 1927 would've sounded more like this one:
To hear Mr. Romero play this at his best, check out earltroach's uploaded version; it' a live performance, and one of the most stunningly beautiful things I've ever heard. The guitar in that performance is also a superior instrument to he one used here.
"La Wonderful", one of the so called Rodriguez Church Door guitars was recorded on extensively in the 70's and 80's. A friend of mine who was close to the family said it was damaged when a metal back brace fell on the top of it. I don't know if that is true. His son's guitars are very similar and VERY expensive.
Friend of mine is a local luthier and got one of Pepe's son's guitars in for a set-up job. I drooled. I envied. I cried. I want. I lust. Must have. He who owns it earned my bad will. They are magnificent instruments. He let me play it and, let me tell you, I felt that thing vibrate my spinal chord and the floorboards under my feet also vibrated with it. It was amazing! Think it was like 14 grand.

Such a Hauser guitar costs 15000 euros today.
Note that it has a zero fret before the nut.
There is a reason for that and it's worth the effort.
Modern luthiers forgot how to make good guitars.

nice indeed - playing it with the same finger is easier at the beginning - two days and it can be played with two fingers. Se my version !

COME ON...John Williams and Spanish music!?? He is technical but hardly an emotional performer. And his tone on the Smallman is plain horrible.

Pepe has recorded 40 albums with different music. Rodrigo wrote his last guitar concerto for Pepe to raise the bar.
He is playing this piece on the guitar (in 1996) at the request of the host (james Hunley)

The sound is tinty, but could be the sound of the videos. Pepe sounds much better on his Rodriguez guitars.
peplicus 3 years ago
Rodríguez? He only made very rare uses of Rodríguez´ guitars, mostly he plays Edmund BLÖCHINGER and now he´s son´s guitars only.
