  • The NHS works. It is preferable than letting 33 million citizens die from easily treatable illness.

The USA- land of the free...to die if your poor and need help.

Keep your privatised healthcare. I as a moderate Conservative One Nationist completely stand by our NHS achievement.

  • my mum is a nurse, and when sick i have always received good care in hospital. but i agree, as does my mum, that the nhs needs improvement. There are too many managers and not enough nurses and doctors. because these nurses and doctors have so many people to care for the quality of care will not be as good as the nurses can and want to give. they are swamped by paperwork and can't give the service they want to. hannan just says we can improve the nhs and that the yanks don't need it.

  • Fox News just want the rich to get richer at the expense of the poor masses

  • If this is such a great plan then why is the government officials that are touting it not going to take part in it? If it is so great then lead by example, not do as I say and not as I do. You think the rich will settle for waiting 11 months for a hip/knee replacement. The UK is not even a 1/2 the size of the US and that is the wait there. What do you think the wait will be here?

  • They aren't taking part in it because they already have health insurance.

I like how everyone in America thinks they know the in-and-outs of every other nations healthcare. Better than they know America's, even.

You know why you don't hear about people dieing left and right day after day in hospital waiting rooms in the UK while they wait for treatment? Because they are getting treated just fine.

They've only been using that system since 1948 because it doesn't work at all, right?

  • I like Hannan, Wish he was here.

  • I'm English and Daniel Hannan is so full of shit. The NHS is an amazing system and millions owe their lives and high standard of health care to it. This man is a traitor and a lier

  • I agree, my family is getting excellent medical services in England.

  • the name speeks for itself. lazymofo. say no more. you fit right in with the typical obamidiot.......

  • Daniel Hannan is a small time nobody in England, his own party leader has disowned him over what he said about the NHS.

    Douchebag...

Whats worse, waiting for a while for a free service or being 30,000 in the red for a broken leg? sort your priorities out

  • I like how the delusional retard Glenn Beck is worried about universal healthcare... when that is in NO WAY what the Obama administration is trying to do.

I'm not an Obama lover, but conservatives are really being stupid about this whole healthcare issue. It would be laughable if it wasn't so frightening and pathetic.

  • LazyMofo69, Americans are scared of a government-run healthcare. Many Americans are proud of their health care coverage, but are scared when the government gets in the way of their coverage where they had to cancel their Medicare and instead, allow the government to choose among them. Also, Americans does not want to pay for an expensive government-run health care which will be consider full of bureacracy and many of the patients had to wait in long lines, nevermind hours, days, weeks, months..

  • What Obama is proposing is not government-run healthcare.

The healthcare reform bill does not affect any existing current healthcare plan in any way.

What Obama is proposing is a government program to provide cheap HEALTH INSURANCE. It's an OPTIONAL PROGRAM. Nothing is being forced on anyone. The government isn't taking control of anything.

The only thing he would be doing to current providers is making it impossible for them to deny people coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

  • Even though it is true that health care must be reformed, the words of universal healthcare coverage is indeed government run health-care, just like in Canada, the UK, and Sweden. If this healthcare reform bill passes, it would affect everyone including those already have health care coverage, but has to change it from their own to the government's version. Even though he is trying to allow health insurance to be cheap, Americans have to end up paying for having others getting the coverage.

  • Okay apparently I need to repeat myself - the government is not buying or banning any current healthcare companies or facilities. It is providing an OPTIONAL low-cost insurance plan. Nothing is being forced on anyone. It isn't universal healthcare. Not even close.

Insurance companies are for-profit organizations. LOTS of profit. People who signed up for this OPTIONAL program wouldn't be getting FREE healthcare at the expense of the taxpayers - they would pay premiums like everyone else.

  • Even though you might see that it is not the government buying/banning health care companies, it is sure government take over. There are those, like Hannan have stated, that wanted to buy their own medicine prescription but the employees at the NHS refuses and they get really aggressive. Even though Obama wants something low-cost, it would creates lots of bureacracy and long waits at the hospital. Many Americans are fine with their health care coverage, taxpayers would still cover Obama's plan.

  • so as a result, I say NO to Obamacare. Period.

  • So... you're against providing cheap healthcare for other people based on false notions of increased costs through personal healthcare you already have and the idea that somehow you're own experience with your healthcare provider would be worse because of this plan.

    You're a retard.

Please provide me with some rationalization of your fears. Otherwise please just stop propagating this fear-based bullshit.

  • Whoa! Whoa! I'm a retard? So you are okay with the fact of universal healthcare, in which not only will it leads to so much red tape in the health care system and drive away doctors from practice and create long lines at the hospital, but it will bankrupt the United States!! This plan is very identical to the United Kingdom, Canada, and Sweden! Why do you think Obama wants the health care system identical to that?? Canadians are going to America for treatment. fear-based bullshit? No, its true.

  • so as a result...once again, YOU'RE THE RETARD!!! I say NO to Obamacare!!!

  • This green toothed European douchebag is a two-faced liar. Ask him what he thinks today. When he got back to his country he was read the riot act. He now sings a totally different tune. Hahahahaa!

  • Glenn Beck hates Obama because he is black! Glenn Beck is an extremist! I am a white man and and I can tell that Beck is an extremist!

  • And by the way I mean no need to debate with racists since you are one.

  • Glenn Beck has lost close to 50 sponsors andI hope the bastard gets thrown off TV soon!

  • Glenn Beck is the biggest jackass on TV besides Limpballs

  • You aren't anything but a facist idiot propoganda apparatchek or why would you be scouring the airwaves to bullshit nonsense

  • Someone needs to perforate this douchebag's skull.

  • Glenn Beck why do not shut your fuckin mouth before I shut it for you asshole!

  • the 1st Amendment only applies to liberals?

  • How about bub I shut your mouth for you, or imagine the pain I could bring down on your rampant idiocy before you fuck with the wolverine.

  • Average US citizens annual health bill via insurance = $7,300

Average British citizens annual health bill via taxes = $2,900

British people have a higher life expectancy than Americas.

British infant mortality rates are lower than Americans.

British hospitals have more medical practitioners per head than American ones.

The top reason for bankruptcy in US = medical bills.

The top reason for homelessness in the US = medical bills.

America has 45 million Americans it doesn't care about.

  • Janebusby u r totally right. Another thing that you didn't mention is Healthcare scams created by Healthcare insurance companies. It is well know, even if you told them your real medical history before they gave you a quote and then you end up in the hospital... these insurance companies will try not to pay the medical bill and put it on you. When you become a risk for them - they cancel your policy. What is so UNITED about United States...I guess only UNITED BULLSHIT!!

  • fuckin right

  • Nonononono You don't understand. This is the land of the free. If you want, Health coverage all you have to do is get health insurance.

I mean, do you really want big Government rationing your health coverage. The Insurance Companies don't tell you what doctors you can see or what precedures you can have or what medicines you can take. SHEESH everybody knows that.

  • and of those 45 million, how many are illegal?

how many CHOOSE not to have insurance, like I do?

how many of them don't work at all but are able-bodied?

Those numbers are out there and I dare you to find them. When you do, if you don't feel duped, then there's nothing anyone can do for you.

  • thank god there are smart people in this country. i couldn't agree with you more.

i'd like to see beck talk his way out of those facts.

  • "Made us rich?"

I guess if you consider being $10 trillion in debt rich, then yeah, we are rich!

  • I can't believe these comments below. Are these people capable of critical thinking? Or, are they just O-bots? Hey, I understand if Acorn's paying you all to post, but you really should think about it instead of the knee-jerk tard comments like he's a drunk, etc.

  • Beck uses untrue figures, see my video response

  • wow, this is propaganda.

  • It's amazing how people defend insurance company profits, instead of lower premiums for everyone because of a bigger pool of people contributing.........americans are dumb as fuck.

  • No shit dude. I'm American and I have to admit, we have become very ignorant and bias in our greatness, uhg.

    -TSN

  • We have a far greater problem here in the United States than our health care system or even the threat of muslim extremists. The fact that an achololic idiot like Glem Beck can be on national television with millions of followers is the canary in a coal mine with regards to the future of the USA, and that canary is dying fast. We cannot survive as a thriving demoncracy with an uneducated and unenlightened electorate that can be led around like sheep by the likes of Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh.

  • Glenn Beck gave made up statistics. See video responses. The real figures show that NHS waiti times are less than US wait times.

  • not listening to the american people, shut up Glenn Beck. Your just campaigning against the administration, fooling people of your disgusted words. and Who tearing America apart is it OBama or Fox News.

  • a year is better than never.

  • Danial Hannan is a Traitorous liberal. Just like the rest of them.

  • To help avoid any confusion for those in Britain/Europe, this is what we do in America.

If we are minutely sick in any way, we always go to the doctor/health care center/emergency room, even when 2/3 of the time you didn't need to go at all.

I honestly think a good deal of our health care is wasted on the ignorant and stupid. I know, I've been that way a few times as well, but it's true. We panic, go to the ER, and the $100 copay covers the $5,000 bill for nothing. It's what we do....

  • But U.S citizens would still be able to choose between private or public healthcare. Thats the difference.

  • If we didn't have the NHS my unlce would have died as a child, I'd have never been born as my dad would have died in his 30's. If I was born I'd be deaf, have a crippled right knee and my shoulder would still be dislocating randomly. Thanks to the NHS I have a very good standard of health.

This Hannan guy is just out for for some cheap publicity, no one hear has ever heard of him till this. We love the NHS here in Britian this guy just commited political suicide.

  • so that must mean NHS is the ONLY solution that would have saved your dad?

  • Well my family has always been poor and working class so there is no way my Dad would have been able to afford private healthcare or insurance. However with the NHS he received the best care there was and pulled through. So yes the NHS was the only solution.

  • maybe, but is what is said not true. Do you not wait months for certain procedures? Do you have an age limit for certain things?

Yes you do. The argument here in the US is that catastrophic insurance, IMO, should be covered, but flu shots and physicals and lasics surgeries should not be covered at all and be open in the free market.

The less the people pay, the more it ends up costing because there is no control in insurance/government spending. Always a downside to everything.

  • Well for certain drugs i.e cheap painkillers, ear drops when we reach 18 (and we're healthy enough to work etc) we pay for it ourselves which is fair enough.

When I damaged my knee I was seen the next day and operated on within the month. My shoulder took about 3 months for the first op and another 3 for the 2nd. But those operation weren't exactly life or death. But if I had cancer I be treated right away get all the drug I needed for free.

Its not perfect but it works and is free.

  • Free. Free! Nothing is free. What was the REAL cost of the operations? How much did you REALLY pay? You don't know. I don't know. The govt red-tape doesn't allow us to know, but rest assured, your operations were not free for you, nor your neighbors, and if you factor in the government bureaucracy, then your operations was definitely more expensive than it should have been.

You apparently don't miss or value the money that you should have but don't. Apparently ignorance is bliss.

  • the NHS is awesome! it's free for god's sake! when i grow up a bit and want to have kids, i don't want to have to pay through the nose for a midwife and a bed and the fucking drugs and whatever else is needed. the fact that in the US, they put a price on bringing new life into this world is disgusting.

  • I watch the Glenn Beck show regulary and agree with a fair bit of what he says but when it comes to healthcare he's way off the mark. I'm British and if Hannan has anything to say about the NHS he should have said it here! He wouldn't have dared as the scumbag would rightly have been hounded down on all sides. Politically I consider myself a conservative liberal. I will not even consider voting tory unless they kick that cowardly buffoon Hannan out of the party!!!

  • So his ripping of Gordon Brown wasn't warranted?

Like it matters... everyone is spending their way into a worthless dollar. I'm sure the conspiracy nuts are mostly right in a since that the goal is one world government and population control. Got to love post WW2 eugenics, something the Americans and Nazis worked alongside up until the start of the war.

  • My point is that the NHS is universally popular over here. Glenn Beck has found one of the few people in Britain who don't like it. Yes it has some problems and it is not perfect by any stretch. There is an argument over whether it should be privatised or not as well. But whether people think it should be privatised, nationalised or something inbetween, there are very few people in Britain who are actually against it(as opposed to some who are against how it is run).

  • Frightening. How can so many millions of Americans believe the rubbish this Beck idiot spouts.

The NHS is flawed yes, but it sure as hell beats the American health system. I know that no matter what health issues i have, i will be treated by some of the best doctors and nurses in the world, in a hospital with good facilities. Best of all, it will all be free and i won't have to worry about bills or arguing with insurance companies about whether they cover it or not.

  • hey daniel ... u like our Const. ?? well hell take it ... we sure arent using it

  • I would not cringe if Beck were to die of cancer!

  • Glenn Beck called Obama Hitler! id knock Beck on his ass!

  • Glenn Beck is an idiot and a divider and an ass! White men love Glenn Beck Militias like Glen Beck so if there is a murder from a militia group I am watching you Beck and by the waqy you bastard Beck, I am white!

  • I know this is going to sound so anal and petty, but the NHS is no longer the third largest employer in the world. When it was founded this was true. However, it is now the fourth largest employer in the world after the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the Indian Railways and that great bastion of capitalism of Wal-Mart. Three very successful organisations, why is it such a bad thing that the NHS is ranked among three such successful employers?

  • My reply was directed at Ben Jr01. Pity we can't respond to people's quotes directly.

  • The U.S. health system spends a higher portion of its gross domestic product than any other country but ranks 37 out of 191 countries according to its performance, the report finds.

  • Daniel Hannan is a wanker.

  • Whoever would attempt to overthrow the

liberty of a nation must first begin by

    subduing the freeness of speech.

  • Hanan is absolutely not representative of our country - those who know who he is generally thinks hes an idiot. He is so far right of our conservative party, they disown everything he says. at least he had strong beliefs though, even if it means he's not going to go far in westminster. I am firmly old labour, but i do admire him for that.

I have had amazing service from the nhs - in the most recent survey 9/10 people said was excellent. they go beyond what you need.

  • No need to pay much attention to what Hannan says about any thing... He comes from the same mold as Beck....

A right wing nut job, from accross the pond.

  • Your fear is delicious.

  • hey padude64, you are a real intelligent individual aren't you? What a vocabulary! Your mother must be proud!

  • I am proud when I am white and I can sy glenn beck hates blacks! Which he does and if you want to debate, bring it on!

  • No need to debate with racists you idiot.

  • I would never watch any of the fox channels ever........if it wasn't for football

  • 'stinks on ice'?

    'sunshine and lollipops'?

Why would anybody preface a serious topic with these comments?

How on earth did Beck ever get his job?

  • gLENN bECK speaks from the heart. He may save you from Obama's socialist medical plan.

Wake up. Realize what's hapenning in your future. Negroes are premature to lead the most powerful nation in the world. I am not a racist, I am stating the reality, I speak the truth. The negroes maybe ready to lead, say, 50 years from now. I voted for Obama with deep regret.

I did not know his agenda would turn to radical socialism as the famous saying:

"SPREAD the WEALTH AROUND". He has defrauded us.

  • honestly you make Americans look bad just shut up! Negroes come on get a modern vocabulary and get an education for God's sake they are African Americans and how can you say Negroes as a whole people are individuals not groups make your judgments on the ability of the individual. You must be one dumb uneducated voter how could you not know he was a socialist did you listen to anything he said before the election how about when he was in Congress?

  • Comment removed

  • Actually having looked at the statistics thats n outright lie Wal Mart employs more people

  • Glenn beck is a cunt asshole bitch! fuck you Beck and wanna debate mother fucker!

  • Hey yank, why do you northerners keep

    electing gays/lesbian and anti Americans

into office? I really want to know?

I am not affiliated with any pty. The term

GOP and DNC is just labels they use

    to keep the people divided.

  • In UK our TV channes and commentators are nowhere near perfect but they attempt to give both sides of a story. This Glenn fellow is ramming propaganda down viewers throats with a sort orgasmic delight! How could anyone make an informed judgement based on this highly excited tirade? It almost childish if it wasn't so serious. Ignore what Hannan says - back in UK he is virtually unknown. those who do know him regard him (as americans would say) '' a cocksucker'.

  • I would agree that Beck is pretty childlike

look up youtube "Harry Alford and Barbara Boxer - Glenn Beck". It is actually about some ridicuolous behaviour on Boxer's part toward a black man. But the way Beck covered it reminded me of a kid....

  • Evil American lying scum. Greedy selfish scum. You have poorer cancer survival rates you just do not count those who cannot afford treatment what utter cunts. Then you drive them into the arms of evil scummy conn artists selling fake cures you evil right wing greedy scum,.

  • the cancer survival rates mean nothing as they only count those who have been diagnosed. What bull shit if you ignore 40 million people who do not get diagnosis or treatment, and do not count them. no wonder you get better bull shit results. What utter cheats.

  • But the worst most insipid thing about this video is that the health care bill is a public - private bill, not the insurance described in the National Health Care system in Britain. And this naysayer is vastly outnumbered in Britain by people who advocate their health care system.

  • BTW, the implication that the problem of the uninsured is not worth fixing is disgusting. Because no matter how you slice it in terms of money, the Institute of Medicine estimated 5 years ago that 18,000 deaths per year among young adults could be attributed to lack of insurance and for all those who ended up in the emergency rooms, the government ends up footing the bill. And as far as the gov. healthcare option goes, medicare provides more choice for doctors than hmo's.

  • One other thing, A LOT of people - children and adults alike, don't get any care until they end up having to go to the Emergency Room. When that happens it gets subsidized. Emergency Rooms are more expensive than a regular doctors visits, and due to the subsidy, YOU ARE PAYING FOR THAT NOW.

Right now, the US health care system costs more than anywhere else in the entire world.

The bill will ALSO provide insurance on a SLIDING SCALE BASIS, to the uninsured.

  • Say you buy a ticket from an airline to get from A to B, you get on the plane & half-way out the flight attendant puts a parachute on you & pushes you out of the plane,

Oh, wait a minute - the airline industry can't do that to you in this instance because there were government regulations put in place that provide CONSUMER PROTECTIONS.

But today the ins. co. can cut you off after 3 mos. even if you need to continue your chemotherapy treatments for 4.

  • Section 123: The advisory panel, which is changed every three years, recommends STANDARDS OF CARE as that relates to benefits. The advisory committee will ensure and recommend that your coverage is comparable to the STANDARDS OF CARE that a physician recommends for your health and well being. That means that an insurance company can't have a policy that cuts off your benefits if you need them.

NURSES, DOCTORS, ETC. HAVE STANDARDS OF CARE AND YOU DON'T OBJECT TO THAT, DO YOU???????

  • Section 123 - Health Benefits Advisory Committee. You are pretending that this has something to do with what you're babbling on about when it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT, liar.

Terms - 3 yr term; participation - insurance providers, consumer representatives, healthcare financing & delivery experts, experts in racial & ethnic disparaties, Experts in care of those with disabilities, at least 1 practicing physician and expert on children's health

    PURPOSE - See above comment

  • FIrst, it's a private - public health care bill. It isn't the same as England's National Health Care System. So from the onset this man, whose station receives millions from the health insurance industry and sponsors him, is LYING TO YOU.

And speaking of lies, misquoting sections in the Bill is just as deceiptful.

  • fox news what the hell go away all of fox

  • Fox News, LOL.

  • Do a search for the news piece written by this nurse: A NURSE'S VIEW OF HEALTH REFORM BY THERESA BROWN, R.N.

It describes a patient who was undergoing chemotherapy, and the health insurance he had stopped paying for them. That's here in the US.

The health care bill provides PROTECTIONS against that happening. Glenn BEck isn't going to talk about that or that Cigna's CEO Ed Hanway made 12.2 million last year - that's $5,583 per hour off denying claims, canceling policies, or ins fee hikes.

  • Private healthcare is fine for those who can afford it. Many cannot. Hannan is a self-satisfied, self-serving opportunist. We'll keep the NHS and Hannan can move to the USA.

  • Most people in Britain can't afford it because it's so expensive- and the reason it's so expensive is because the NHS has pushed private insurance out of the market completely. What Hannan is saying is true and he needs to be heard- both here and back in Britain. He's one of the few men out there willing to speak the truth about this ghastly burden called the NHS.

  • correction: most people in britain don't opt for it because they would rather not pay. still, it costs around £1000 a year if you want it, which compares very favourably to the US.

  • Can you count to one hundred billion? I'd rather pay for my own healthcare.

  • Offensive pricks... Both of them

  • Sorry republicans, US democrates aren't buying it. Good luck though. lol. sike!

  • The guy is a fucking prick the NHS is fantastic i don't know what hospital he has been going to when i broke my collar bone i was given painkillers straight away and was seen to pretty early. When my grandad had Cancer they were superb this bloke is a prick. We have a well run health care system in this country.

  • and when i had a fractured wrist, i had to wait 7 hours to get painkillers.

this is compared to germany where my cousin was seen to immediately by 2 doctors in an A&E.

  • Charlie Brooker should go on Fox News because he would disagree with everything Fox News has to say

  • I live in the UK, and I can tell you that there has been uproar at this Tory bastard's comments. NO-ONE in the whole of the UK agrees with him. No-one. He has been hugely criticised for his lies and backstabbing. He's wrong. He doesn't represent British opinion. And the lies here are outstanding.

  • well you're full of shit, because i agree with him.

he's been criticised for his 'backstabbing', because he's essentially telling new labour and the tories to fuck off, and providing a real conservative voice.

  • I love Hannan. HATE BECK!

  • Hannan's an intelligent guy, and has written some sensible stuff on healthcare reform (check out his blog). I think he's made a mistake going on Fox though.

Hannan knows the British system not as bad as made out in the US, and it's a shame that he's joined in with BEck scaremongering. Sure, the NHS is a bureaucratic, money eating monster from another age, but Hannan must realise nobody is suggesting that model for the US.

I wonder if it was a ploy for column inches back in the UK.

  • REBEL SENTINEL BLOGSPOT COM

  • rebel sentinel blogspot com

  • you know I'm thinking of creating a positive Glenn Beck video(as in no slamming him involved) and i think I'm going to add a def. of Nazi so any one who tries to call Glenn one will see how stupid it sounds.

  • OK, let me get this right! You would prefer to die with no possibility of getting any health care than to wait for awhile to get some....WTF.

  • Healthcare is a human right. The surgeries mentioned are usually elective. Also you can walk into any hospital or pharmacy and just "buy" painkillers w/o a prescription. They are both idiots.

  • 1) Health care is not a human right unless voters actually want it to be one, and even then there are serious questions of the morality of such a right.

    2) Prostate cancer surgery is not "elective". Yet in the US the median 5-year survival rate is close to 100% for such procedures- in the UK, 77%, according to the BBC. It's worth asking why the difference exists.

    3) For acetaminophen, aspirin, and paracetamol, yes. For vicodin, oxycodone, and codeine, no you can't- for obvious reasons.

  • 1. Health care is not a listed human right according to the UN charter. However, as a health care professional there is a moral and professional obligation to serve any person in need. To you, I assume you are not in healthcare, you have no moral obligation to help another person in dire need of medical attention. If you can live with that yourself knowing that someone passed b/c of your own selfishness by all means. I choose a different moral path.

  • Best description of UK socialized health care. I don't want it.

  • Americans should send someone to find out the truth about social healthcare in UK instead of listening to a guy who probably has little or no direct experience of our NHS and hates anything that ain't run for profit. I strongly suspect he bases his assesment of the quality of service on sensationalist tabloid media stories. Don't listen to him - he may talk the talk -he don't walk the walk!

  • Best Healthcare in the world eh Glenn?? 48 Million Americans and counting unable to afford healthcare. Yeh actually stuff Universal healthcare and the rest of the world can watch America suffer.

  • I wonder why he doesn't bash the NHS when he's Question Time over here.

  • i agree. I dont think he thought he'd get noticed by us over here but he did.

    watch?v=hS-tyOQjFVA

  • This guy is a fucking prick, the host, and the twat guest.

Thank god we dont have healtcare like the US where millions die because they cant afford insurance. Land of the free? Give me a break.

Give me the NHS over the joke US health care system anyday of the week.

  • The USA has 45 million people without health care, higher infant mortality rates, higher cancer deaths and lower life expectancy than most of Europe. It has failed.

  • You need to check your facts and stats they are very wrong. No one in the U.S. is without health care, they may not have health insurance but all have complete access to health care that is subsidized or completely paid for by the Govt. The U.S. has the lowest infant mortality rate in the world, and life expectancy is the 3rd highest in the world. Need to get your facts straight.

  • here are some facts and stats for you:

100,000 americans die every year from preventable diseases - the highest of any industrialised countries. the US spends 15.9% of its GDP on healthcare while 'socialist' countries such as sweden, the UK and france spend 8.9%, 8.2% and 11% respectively - individuals spend far more in the US too. these systems also have higher satisfaction ratings. healthcare costs contribute to 62% of bankruptcies in the US.

  • Bobzilla, Next, I would and most level headed folks in out nation would agree that we spend too much money on health care for what we receive, so I cannot and will not argue with you about the high cost here. But I must correct you in some assumptions. First you stated 100,000 Americans die every year from preventable diseases - the highest of any industrialized countries.

  • While I think that any preventable death is a tragedy, that is a useless number because the population of the U.S. is on average triple the population of the other G8 industrialized nations, so a flat number of 100,000 is meaningless. Also lack of health insurance is not a major factor in those deaths, the highest 2 preventable diseases that cause death in our country are, Diabetes and Stroke. Both of these are primarily (not always) caused by poor life choices, i.e. diet & exercise

  • america has around 109 preventable deaths per 100,000 of the population. 'socialist' france leads the world with 64 per 100,000.

lack of health insurance IS a major factor because about 47 million of 300 million people in the USA lack it. this is a huge figure and you cannot deny its impact.

in other nations studied the amount of preventable deaths was reduced by on average 16% between 1998 and 2008. in the US it fell by just 9%.

  • We need better education of our people about proper life habits, not socialized health insurance that will only inflate our costs, and reduce our choices. If we are already paying these extreme amounts now how much more will we pay when the Govt. will pay it all?

  • Also keep in mind the extent of our health care cost against the GDP, we have many factors that other countries do not have one example is the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, while I do not have exact figures it looks as though the financial hit over the past 7 years and projected to the next 10 looks like over $600 billion. That is huge amount. Dont get me into the other problems with these wars. But that definitely inflates our health care to GDP ratio.

  • the cost of a war does not affect the proportion of spending on healthcare as a % of GDP. in any case america's healthcare has been increasing ever faster since it broke away from the international average in the early 1980s. this is not a recent trend confined to the last decade.

  • I think maybe you are misunderstanding me. I absolutely believe that we need to fix our health care system, but socialized health care is not the answer. If we cannot afford the current government supplied health care (Medicaid and Medicare) that we are dealing with now, how will we pay for a complete Government take over? Also war related health cost does reflect in the overall cost. Its not free. The spending amount I gave you was Health care related only. $600 Billion.

  • the reason medicaid and medicare cost so much is, as i understand it, due to a number of factors related largely to the unregulated nature of the market. private healthcare and prescription drugs cost much less in other countries. 600 billion is a huge figure - however it makes up only a part of the 2.2 trillion the US spends yearly on healthcare.

  • i think the idea of 'government takeover' is a misnomer. nobody is suggesting that. the idea would be to regulate the system to bring down all costs, while making universal healthcare available to all, as in the 'socialized' systems such as france and the uk, where private choice remains.

if it can work for so many countries, both rich and poor, why not the US, the richest nation on the planet, with the resources to afford it? how can the constitution's promises count for the uninsured?

  • What promises in the constitution are you referring to? Again I truly believe we have a problem with our health care system in the U.S. that needs attention, but creating a system that flies in the face of the very foundation of our country is not the right way. What you suggest would be great, unfortunately that is not what is coming out of our congress.

  • 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' - i fail to see how these contradict the notion of universal healthcare, rather if every american had the right to free healthcare there would be a lot more of that old fashioned american value - equality of opportunity. there is no question that the current system restricts it for many people.

i'd like to know what is coming from your congress, apart from division - its hard to hear anything over the screams about 'communism' and 'death panels'

  • That sounds nice unfortunately that is not in the constitution, it is the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, which is a wonderful document that explains the intent of our nation to secede from the rule of Brittan but has no governing rules or jurisdiction. I agree some are going overboard with the "death panels" talk, never the less I have been to 2 town hall meetings with my local (democratic I might say) congressman, and what they propose is definitely not what you have in mind.

  • Let me say though I do agree with you, the 47 million people in our nation without health care need help to get it, but attempting to go to a single payer system is not the answer. Although I do know first hand that many out there do qualify for certain Govt. subd. insurance, such as CHIPS which would cover virtually every child under 18 that does not have insurance already. It is very easy to get and the cost in minimal, average cost is $20 per month.

  • I meant CHIP

  • SCHIP.

  • I agree with you about this huge mistake called the "single-payer" system, but I take objection to the use of that "47 million" figure. The BLS itself has admitted, repeatedly, that its own methods of measuring that number are flawed. They measure the number of people without insurance *at any time* in the previous 12 months. If you adjust the figures so that things are properly measured, the number drops dramatically to 10 million or so.

  • Thank you "SCHIP" I was mistaken. If in fact the 47 million figure is closer to 10 million, that makes it even easier to solve without a massive Govt. spending program that we can't afford. Seems as though we agree.

  • 1. How is that figure of 10 million arrived at. Explain.

    2. Explain what Title, Subtitle, and section in the Health Care Reform bill you are referring to as a basis for your claim.

  • First off I did not use the 10 million figure, I used the 47 million figure and only stated after someone else said it , that if it was true it would make the situation easier to fix. As for the bill I would cite sec. 101,102 By creating a Govt. controlled standard to health grandfathered plans will eventually be dropped because the cost effectiveness of a company running two different systems.

  • Next is sec 111- If you do not have a pre-existing condition restriction it is not insurance. The whole point of insurance is to pay into it now for possible needed benefits in the future, without restrictions it will bankrupt the system opening the door to further Govt, takeover, You can't buy car insurance after you wreck your car. sec 116- By controlling how much an insurance co. can make, the Govt. is essentially opening the door to complete takeover.

  • SUBTITLE B-SECTION 111 - PROHIBITING Pre-existing Condition Exclusions.

First, that's a good thing, not a bad thing, to prohibit insurance companies from EXCLUDING the people who are paying for insurance. The CEO of Cigna, Ed Hanway's annual salary last year was 12.2 million dollars, that's $5,583 per hour which - if he works 8 hours - is $44,664 per day. A health care reform bill that protects us is not going to bankrupt Ed.

  • sec 123- The Govt. will create a panel, "Public, Private Advisory Committee" that will "recommend benefits and essential, enhanced, and premium plans." While I shy away from claiming these to be "death panels" because I do not believe that is the intent, nevertheless I do not want to Govt. controlling the choices I make in my health care, that should be between me and my Dr. These are just a few of my concerns, there are many more nut I would be here all day if I wrote them all out.

  • Ensuring that benefits will be comparable to a physician's standards of care - and the hospitals and doctors' standards of care are already regulated. What it means is that the ins companies can't make up policies to stop coverage after 2 months while you're in a hospital and the doctor says you need three months of treatment in accordance with their standards of care - which are already regulated. Do want the drs to stop required treatments to get rich too? Didn't think so.

  • It HASN'T worked in the UK, or anywhere else. I used to live in the UK, and what Hannan is saying is very true. Private choice remains- for the very wealthy. In Canada, the system is bankrupt and is desperately trying to reduce costs. The best model for you folks to follow would be Singapore's- but that imposes compulsory savings, which would be un-Constitutional, even though it's a good idea.

  • What Hannan is saying is bollocks, I went into A and E before and got looked at straight away, my father had heart surgery, it didn't have the desired effect so he went in the next week and had another procedure that fixed it. Don't talk about what you don't understand

  • Good for you and your dad. You were the lucky ones. Unfortunately, the statistics tell a very different story. Cancer mortality rates in the UK are far higher than they are here in the States. Waiting times for major joint replacement surgeries are far longer. People over 55 are refused treatment at 35% of dialysis centres. Survival rates for strokes, heart disease, and pulmonary disease are lower in the UK than the US. The facts and figures prove Hannan right.

  • I don't know if you got my last message my computer's a bit buggered what I said was:

have a butchers at this video it will show you a real breakdown from a scientific point of view type into the Youtube search 'US healthcare reform newscientist' It will show you how corrupt the US healthsystem really is and how it's more about making money then helping people

  • I thank you for the interesting debate, good change and compromise can only happen when people are educated about the issues and willing to discuss them intelligently. Just because we might disagree with some things does not mean we must be enemies or antagonistic. I is nice to debate someone on a forum like this and not have turn into a childish name calling rant. Thank you.

  • Dan Hanna is a bankers whore who has no Shame. After living for 30 years in UK paying my taxes, sometimes even in my illness the NHS sent me to the BEST PRIVATE CLINIC and funded it (through my taxes i had paid). He has an agenda for the free marketeers and they dont want any comptetition in the medical sector, thats what this is all about. Monopoly prices for healthcare by 1 current system. period.

  • Daniel Hannan, you lying bastard

  • he's loving the press he is getting in America, because he is a nobody back home, with absolutely zero political credibility. I don't know where fox gets its facts from but they are just wrong. the NHS wasn't created in 1944 for a start off. read a history book you idiots

  • Wow this British guy is a SHILL! It's pathetic.

  • If this healthcare bill is so great then why are all congress exempt?

  • Glenn Dreck. Still shilling for the health insurance companies and Big Pharma.

Beck is a religious fanatic who wears magic Mormon underwear and cries about imaginary stuff on television. How can anyone take this little weasel seriously?

  • This little turd is a fucking liar.

He is making bullshit up to get in Foxes pants.

I ruptured my cruciate ligament and got it seen to within two weeks.

  • Two weeks for something like that, and that's GOOD??
