  • where can i get this positional training???

  • @zachboy784

    yo i thought that

  • @zachboy784

Don't forget that it's black's turn to move. So he will push the pawn first to pc6c5 and than Ra8

  • wish i could break the 2000s * sigh*

  • so take care, hope you enjoyed the video & see you next time ;-)

  • I think it is a winning move. If Bb5, then c4 wins.

  • I am talking about the move Rd4 at 7:38. Please see the comment posted by exombi.

  • Great! I just started playing chess again after 6 years and I have to retrain my thought process and these videos are going to be very helpful.

  • Bishop a7 is a good move, because after pawn b6, rook x rook, king takes rook, pawn c5, pawn b5, knight d4 attacking the white bushop and the c6 pawn, after bishop d6 defending the pawn, now it comes rook to d1 making free way to the knight to take on c6 because the white bishop of black would be pinned, anyway it would have been another play and im not a genius so, thats what I think.

  • just looking at that bishop move to a7 at 9:25,can't tell you what it does kinetically in the dynamics, but statically it is performing a fianchetto role in the enemy end...that is something i have never thought of!, a file clearance, and the potential for a majority pawn attack breakthrough because of blacks doubled pawns on the c file....? who really knows?

  • @pleutman you're trying to hard. makes you sound like an idiot

  • Hey man, I've just found your position practice vids and let me thank u, your doing a great job!

Ah, for the first time I got the move right Nd4!

  • You rock! Finally some good chess vids on youtube! thx :)

  • Yes. I like Rd4. Black must move or lose bishop and then White can double rooks straight away. Anything wrong with that?

  • Answering your question (sorry if someone els has already answered it): After Bxa7 b6 white can simply play c5 so black can't play Ra8 anymore because of cxb6.

  • at 8:09 the A7 pawn can be taken

  • Then B7 pawn moves up to B6 and the bishop is fucked, bad move

  • nice video but i like rook to d4 what do u think of that move is it good at all

  • I love your videos.I found a move and it was b3 Be7 Rd2. getting Rd1.I hope you would keep on doing these great videos.

  • You are the best.

  • It would seem to me that after 1.BxA7 R-D8 2.C4 is a good move. The reason being because now if black tries to get snarky and play b6 to trap the bishop white can play C5 attacking the blocking pawn. So if say then R-A8 to attack the bishop, then CxB6 protects the bishop from the rook and then if Black plays CxB6 then the white bishop takes on B6 and the trap is gone and black is now up a pawn.

  • I like c4 because it gains space on the queenside and locks black's doubled pawns. The problem of Ne4 is after c5 the knight has to move leaving the c pawn undefended.

  • Bishop isnt trapped by computer move.

If black tries to trap with b6, c5 solves

  • I like Rook to D4, black moves his bishop, then pawn to C3 or c4

  • The computer recommended c4. Here's a possible scenario.

    1. c4 Rd8 2. Bxa7 b6 3.Rxd8+ Bxd8 4.Nd4 Bg6 5.Nxc6 Bg5 6.b4 Kd7 7.b5 Be4 8.Rd1+ Kc8 9.c5 Kb7 10.Rd7 Bxc6 11.bxc6+ Kxa7 12.Rxc7+ Ka6 13.Rxf7 Rc8 14.c7 bxc5 15.f4 Bh4 16. Rxg7 Kb6 17.g3

  • thanks for the great videos. ive learned alot.

given enough time Rybka 3 finds the correct move: Rybka 3.0 mp 32-bit 3800 x2

    3.Nd4 Be4 4.c3 a6 5.Nb3 Be7 6.f3 Bc2 7.Rd2 Bxb3 8.axb3 Rd8 9.Rad1 Rxd2 10.Rxd2 Rf8 11.Kf2 f6 12.exf6 ² (0.37) Depth: 17 00:07:45 24183kN

    3.Nd4 Be4 4.c3 a6 5.Nb3 Be7 6.f3 Bc2 7.Rd2 Bxb3 8.axb3 Rd8 9.Rad1 Rxd2 10.Rxd2 Rf8 11.Kf1 f6 12.Bf4 Bd8 13.e6 g5 14.Be3 f5 15.Bc5 ² (0.37) Depth: 18 00:11:22 36954kN

  • Knd4 is what jumps out first, but it seems like it limits the black bishop a lot... and Be4 helps black more... does anyone see why not Rd2? protect and start the buildup... leaves the black bishop more options including xa7

  • i Like your english ;) :P

  • Thanks B1zmuth!

  • lol your intro rocked

  • Love your videos jrobi. Just a few notes:

    1) At 4:58, I think Nf3 is not best. After black's bishop retreats, your knight isn't doing much except defending the e-pawn and blocking a possible f-pawn move (which would get your pawn majority moving.)

2)I think the position at 6:00 favors black. White's bishop is blocked by a central pawn, making it a bad bishop. (It should have more than just a defensive role). Meanwhile, black will eventually post his bishop on the excellent g7 square.

  • WHAT COMPUTER ENGINE DO YOU USE?

  • what computer engine do you use?

  • I use a few. If you don't have one yet the graphical interface for the FICS server has one built in (crafty) and I have a vid on how to get that up and running.

  • you can also implement other computer engines into your graphical interface besides the built in crafty. So you can also use Rybka instead of crafty. (Rybka is considered the strongest computer chess engine, if I'm not wrong)

    love your videos jrobi xD

  • With respect the story is incorrect. You cannot move your piece back and move a different piece, no arbiter would allow that. Kasparov moved the same piece to a different square. The controvosy was as to whether Kasparov originally let go of the piece. After checking the video, Kasparovs hand quit the piece for 100th of a second. Polgar looked at the arbiter but did not protest, so the move was accepted.

  • He let go of the piece, and picked it up again - same rule is broken. As to why she decided not to - I have no idea. Quite possibly her overall experience in competitive chess at the time played a role, not to mention the possibility of getting into a verbal sparring match with a chess icon. Judit would not have been aware of the existence of the video during the heat of the moment, so it would be her word versus Kasparov's. Very interesting story.

  • It is indeed very intersting. Thanks for the vid, good win here for Polgar.

  • Can you Please make a video on promotion

  • Can you please make a video on candinate moves four please

  • hmm.... Nd4 seemed obvious but i guess its bad practice to only consider the obvious. even though it was the correct move in this case.

  • Yes it was fairly straight forward since it was a forcing move that black had made attacking the pawn, but you are totally correct - just considering the obvious is not the best thing - it's good to look at all the options. Who knows what tactical opportunities might be found. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • JRobi how does whites Bishop get trapped in the computer line?

  • Hi jrobi, i first thought of Rd4 but i guess Nd4 is much better. cheers.

  • Rybka prefers Nd4 (slightly) over c4. But after c4, black plays Be7, not Rd8...

Kasparov's play against Polgar in the earlier game shows his disdain, not only for his opponents, but the rules as well !!

  • Thanks - much appreciated.

  • Not in these games he wasn't. But as an overall career goes, definitely (at least so far anyway).

  • Haha! I luv the new intro. music! *thumbsup*

  • Thanks Dizeazed!

  • what about rook to d4?

  • Thanks guxim3! =)

  • as always another great vid Jrobi!

i make up with the same move you did:)

  • That's great Hussambani! Thanks for checking it out!

  • I like the computer's move. The bishop isn't really trapped. It's in a powerful position. No matter how many ways I play it out. Nd4 prevents the pawns from locking in the bishop by threatening c5 pawn. those pawns are really destroyed and the bishop looks safe to me.

  • Having the knight on D4 is definitely key, that's for sure. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • e5 is can also be a weakness

  • Thanks for the recommendation Robotman!

  • Hi,

    Your videos are always great.

    Thanks.

  • Thanks for checking it out Laoch!

  • 1. c4 Rd8? (Bd7 is best here for black)

    2. Bxa7 b6 (to try to trap the bishop)

    3. c5! and the bishop is not trapped anymore

  • Wrong! black can simply push the pawn on b6 and the bishop is still trapped.

  • Good discussion everyone!

  • I might be wrong, but bishop wont be trapped simply because if black plays b6 white can reply with c5.

  • great video i just wish it was longer :)

  • Thanks slinkyhot!

  • Thanks Faugh666! =)

  • Would have loved to see the next few moves of the match or at least Kasparovs answer. Cheers.

  • I would have liked to cover more but due to the time limits I was rather limited. But in these videos (position practice) it's the one move I want to emphasize. However, I did put the PGN of the game on my blog for those interested in seeing how Polgar secured the win.

  • Nice video, I liked the new music at the start and I too came up with the same move!

  • Thanks 1kingconan!

  • Awesome vid. The change in intro music was cool too :P

  • Thanks GMorganis! =)

  • Thanks for your video. I think only Deep Blue Ibm chess program could get with the strongest move. However, Bishop can be sacrificed for the pawn and it might be a fair compensation in endgame.

  • It was an interesting idea the engine came up with that threw me off somewhat. I think sometimes "computer chess" is quite a bit different than what people would play in certain positions. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Hi jrobi, once again another good canditate moves exercise. When I reached The Elite Aus Juniors Chess Squad, I had to pass this test with Canditate Moves, and after that I started using it in practice, because it's probably the best way to practice your middle game and improve your chess, because you have to find the best move not the 2nd or 3rd best move the Best!

  • Totally agree tomonated! I really think working on this will help my chess, and hopefully it will benefit others as I make the positional practice vids at the same time. Thanks for checking it out and commenting!

  • I'm analyzing now, but so far, Fritz 11 is giving me 1. Nd4 as the best...

What engine did you use to analyze the game, how long did you analyze the position, and what hash size did you use?

  • I used crafty for this particular one to a depth of 13. I wasn't particularly happy with the results of the engine analysis, however, and will probably use one of my retail engines for the positional practice vids in the future.

  • Is the computer move 1) Bxe7 good after an exchange of rooks as the bishop can go to b8 attacking pawn on c7? Apologies to non cricket playing nations for previous baffling remark.

  • Remarkable story at the top of the video. Reminds me of an anecdote told about W C Grace, the cricketer; He was bowled first ball in a particular match in his late career and reached down to replace the bails rather than walking off. The bowler protested to the umpire and Grace exclaimed 'Who do you think the crowd has come to watch, you or me?'

  • Thanks for sharing that number94!

  • Great job with the videos. They're definitely helping me.

  • I am glad to hear that Keith987 - thanks for checking it out!

  • Call your phone and make it go off during the round so that the TD takes off half its time.

  • you should show the rest of the game :O

  • I would have liked to but with the YouTube time limit it wasn't feasible. But for these positional practice videos it's really the one move I am focusing on. Thanks for checking it out!

  • I did, however, put the PGN file on my blog for people to check out the entire game - it was a great one.

  • So Nd4 was the best move, right?

  • i love your vids, you should post more often :)

  • Thanks L0r3x! =)

  • j,

what is the best freeware you know for practicing chess?

  • I think the babas client for the FICS server is pretty solid for freeware. It has the interface for playing live of course, and a built in version of the crafty engine for analysis. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • FIRST!

    hahaha, great vid.

I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now and you taught me alot.

    But i still suck...

    =(

  • Thanks for checking it out timmytibble and don't worry, things will improve with practice! Sometimes when you learn new things it takes a bit to translate into actual utility in live games. Keep me posted on your progress!

  • Jrobi, thanks for all your videos. As always I appreciate all of your game analysis, videos and advice you give.

Chess does take a lot of practice and time to translate into your games. Sometimes I feel studying sets me backwards. I will go through a slump and lose a lot games, but I actually get stronger cause I find where my weakness's are.
