  • This brings back many good memories. Some of my favourite horses jumping proper fences at Haydock, not the rubbish they have today!

  • I stopped betting around 1978 but backed night nurse all the way before that - didn't realise he went on to such success as a chaser - brilliant

  • To add to the debate, Night Nurse was a whisker off being the first horse to win both Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup (I believe he was second to Little Owl in 1981). Also, Night Nurse got injured in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, falling at the last (a fall which ended Paddy Broderick's career), which prompted the switch to fences. I remember a jockey called Ian Watkinson riding Night Nurse over fences at one point.

  • In reference to mr mr wallyc's Ascot evening meeting on BBC2.. I remember that particular meeting, a valuable hurdle race featured Absalom's Lady, a Xmas hurdle winner, anyway the following day Ascot's flat campaign got underway with the Sagaro and the Victoria Cup.. I miss the midweek Racing on BBC.. Loved it during the autumn and winter, top class racing

  • that was awsome giving 1st5ib to a gold cup winner also mr mrwallyc3 yes there used to be ascot evening racing bbc2. thanks again cheesebody how icant remember that race never know if you can pull out any sula bula thanks

  • Night Nurse never went for Jonjo O'Neil in my opinion

  • dont agree but night nurse was off for about a year with a bad injury and i am telling you that at his best ne would have murdered kauto star/denman etc dont forget he was giving a lot of weight to gold cup winners not just beating handicappers like kautos last short head victory.he was just unlucky not to peak on gold cup days but thats only a race amongs others .i mean kauto star could not give 21ibs to a gold cup class horse

  • Night Nurse is my favourite horse. He had two great jockeys ride him who were suited to him, Broderick and Watkinson, but he never went for O'Neil nor Brown in the same way IMHO. His style of running is mimicked by Denman and I reckon Night Nurse liked the same kind of galloping courses to Denman.

  • You make a good point. I felt Night Nurse was a better hurdler than chaser. He always used to be racing on Saturday against Birds Nest, Dramatist and sea pidgeon. Great memories.

    Remember the ITV7 ?

  • I agree with Tobin2.....We need these races and meetings to be allowed on Here and i have on tape Evening horse race meetings from 1998 on sky. Never going to get rid of these as in years to come i can sit and watch these. Does anyone remeber ASCOT on BBC2 having an Evening National Hunt fixture with races at 5.30,6.00 & 6.30 ? or did i think they did...Please can anyone help

  • Yes, I think it was held on Tuesdays

  • Thoroughly enjoyed that. Great stuff.
