  • My son gave me this CD.

Only understood the few words in English & guessed that "Ya" was "yes" in Swedish.

Nonetheless, I got the gist from just the music.

Couldn't find much on the internet back then on Kristina but Bablefish verified what I'd guessed and filled in many of the blanks.

You and others like you who have translated reveal every nuance of this amazing opera. Thank you

  • @grumpyoldman02 No, Jag (ya) means 'I'..it has been played on Broadway so there is an English version of this..however I do think it is best in the original language. I think it applies on other European countries as well which experienced bad times in the 19th century and thousands and thousands of people emigrating to America.

  • "du måste finnas, du måste, hur kan du då överge mig?" underbart hur hon sjunger den delen!

  • Tack till dig! Perfect translation. Was fortunate to have seen the production in Stockholm with the original cast whilst living there. Mycket Tack igen.

Mega .. =)

  • Mycket bättre översättning än väntat.

  • Sorry, Az3trk, I meant the English version of Kristina which was recorded at Carnegie Hall 22Sept09. Think it will be out in early 2010.

  • oh, my bad

  • fy fan vad bra!

    jag far gladje rysningar!

  • jag också! :P

  • The Kristina concerts at Carnegie were wondrous, magical. Helen got standing ovations both nights with this song. Hope the CD will be out soon.

  • its been out a loooooong time

  • @SEATTLESUE1 It'sout And I love it.

  • Åh, den är så fin :D

  • LOVE IT

  • Ooh, the showing of Kristina is tomorrow... Good luck, everyone in the production, hope the show turns out great!

    Wonderful performance here!

  • how was it?

  • I never went to the show--I wish I could have, though. Sadly, I can't take a day off right now.

But in the post that I posted, I was wishing everyone in the production good luck.

  • This song, the text and Helen's performance, it's so powerful and beautiful and sad. Sitting at work now, tears streaming down my face.

    Good luck in Carnegie Hall!

  • Thank you for posting the translation of the lyric for this song. I first heard it on Sunday at the Thank You For The Music concert in Hyde Park. I was nailed to the spot by the emotion of the music and words. The poignancy of the pain of this woman and her longing that it shouldn't be for nothing - something that strikes to the core of our humanity. The Swedish translation, even more so. Thank you for sharing this.

  • just listened to kerry ellis sing this in English.

Its so powerful I love it!

  • Is there a backing for this somewhere? Its beautiful:D x

  • I had the privilege of seeing the musical with the original cast, and while the recording of this song is great, the live performance gave me goose-bumps all over.

If you get a chance to see the musical, take it. You might have to read the books the musical is based on, to see the entire story, but it will be well worth your time.

  • I saw the musical with the original cast too in sthlm=) Amazing! Its one of those moments I will always remember....

  • I dont know how I always seem to end up listening to this song..

    I just love it !

Helen Sjöholms singing is incredible and every time i end up on this clip I watch it over and over again and I dont get tired of it at all..

Fy fan va hon e bra asså =)

  • I don't know why, but this song really moves me. For some reason, I feel like it speaks to me, that I understand how she feels - and I'm not even remotely religious! Strange, haha.

And of course, as always, Helen's voice is amazing :)

  • Benny and Bjorn have composed a masterpiece here that sits easily alongside Wagner's work.

Helen Sjoholm delivers the vocal with the emotions of isolation, rejection, fear, dread and desperation with powerful conviction.Thank you for translating the lyrics and revealing this story.

  • Now we just have to hope that the Carnegie concert goes well and that it finds it's rightful place on Broadway! Here's hoping!

  • Grym översättning. Tack!

  • Could you please post the swedish text of the song as well? I love that sound, and I like to (try to) sing it in swedish with this music!

  • lilmaestrette:

    Tack så obeskrivligt mycket!

  • The story isn't really like that. She lost her child, but the child was... hmm like 5 years old. She ate something that wasn't ready to be eaten yet and it swelled in her stomach and she died. Really sad... and why she is seperated from her husband is because she gets pregnant over and over again (she's not allowed to sleep in the same bed as him just because she gets pregnant and it's killing her). I think she had... 7-9 kids, and in those years (1800) it was fatel. See the movie, it rules! :D

  • But she had a misscarried, isn't why she sings thst god took her baby. I loses Anna in sweden och in amerika she loses the unborn child. I thought she ment the unborn child.....

  • No, you mixed it up. Yes, she lost her first child at five, but that was when they still lived in Sweden.

This song takes place when she has an almost, for her, deadly miscarriage. Then the doctor tells them that if she gets pregnant again she will die.

So its more like "but you took my child, and you separate me from my husband". They keep that celibacy for a year or two, but then their love gets too strong and she gets pregnant again, and dies in her late 30's.

  • love this song!

  • This musical will come to New York. For two days...do not recall when.

  • I was surfing on the net, ending up at this vid. And suddenly the whole room fills with powerful singing!I fell off the chair!! Wonderful!!! Im from Sweden but I´ve never heard it like this before.

  • Zo ontroerend!

  • this is such a heartbreaking song. She really put's her soul in singing this song. I really love it, and i can't stop listening to it! GREAT!

No shit!

  • Thank you so much! Always wanted to know what this song is about but could understand only the title.

    Great song!

  • Den här sången är så stark. Man känner vilken avgrund hon står vid.

  • dot brak jig alta gruunk med dig breurekod! ;-)

    xdjx

  • Benny and Bjorn really hit the mark with this. one of the great songs. Of all time.

All my respect lilmaestrette, this was really great! And thx so much Dani for sending me!

  • I felt like going out to the theater. Amazing!

    Thank you!

  • I love your translaton. Great job!

  • Great! At last B&B will start to have get credibility from the musical snobs. Look forward to seeing it when it's translated. What a fantastic career they've had? Great composers, surely!

  • Hejsan "Lillmaestrette"! Take Care, Tobbe!

  • Tusinde tak for oversættelsen!

  • Still gives me goosebumps! I wish they would finish the translations and the legalities, and get this going here in the States!

  • It's actually gonna be a broadway musical pretty soon =]

I'm excited to see how they translated it =]

  • REALLY? that's amazing when?

  • I like this song so much

  • such a powerfull piece of music has now been given more power. What a piece of music. Pete townshend is right so call Benny a genius. And the lyrics are equally powerful. Wow. Thank you for this.

  • Det här är den bästa låten någonsin. Min favo sedan 9 åt tillbaka. Hon sjumger som en ängel

  • jättebra! kanon!

  • Thankyou for translating this song. I found it very moving when I couldn't ubderstand a word of it ( I'm english speaking ) but with the translation it's almost unbearable.... & so wonderfully sung ...

  • if you search for Alice Ripley on youtube, and then sort by date added, you'll find the english version.

  • When u translate the swedish language into english. U have to take different words sometimes, even if its sounds crazy, because if u didnt the english gramatic would more fcked up and it would sound like shiit ;P

And there is no english version of this song for u who wonders.

  • oh, there is an englishg version.

    sung by Alic Ripley.

    And there's no direct translation.

maybe you should listen to it

  • ...There is no english version, I think.

This is a direct translation from the swedish.

Maybe the version you've heard has different lyrics than the swedish one?

  • ther is mo english version

Människans litenhet, men ävensom hennes storhet inför sitt oundvikliga öde.

  • What a great translation, good work lilmaestrette. :)

  • This is so beautiful...I would really like to learn swedish. I love languages!

    This is so beautifully sung...

Thanks a lot for uploading it!

  • Good you liek the swedish language :D .

  • ooh, I love this song!

When I took singinglessons my teacher tried to make me understand the powerful feeling that Helena sings with, I didn´t understand back then, but now I do.

    Wonderful!

  • Not how i'd have translated it, but nice work, anyway xD

  • yeah this is pretty cool thanks 4 sending it 2 me

  • Nice translation. :] Helen Sjöholm is awesome, I met her a few times. :D

It's cool that people that dosn't understand Swedish also listen to this. I didn't think that tbh.

  • The musical was at Broadway for a while, and it's made by Björn Ulveus and Benny Andersson.. that sort of guarantees interest.

  • It hasn't been produced on Broadway yet, but they have plans to bring it here. I know that there has been readings/workshops in NYC but they had some legal issues and so the production was delayed.

  • Really? Well it's been put up (if only on single occasions) in Minnesota.

  • Yep, they did a concert version in Minnesota with the original cast if I'm not mistaken :).

  • From what I've heard, we can thank Hal Prince for that. He wants more money. The show has been translated from what my dad was telling me (he saw the original Malmo production in sweeden so he's a BIG Kristina dork). The show is supposed to take place in the theatre where Color Purple is.

  • its not supposed to be... if you weren't there or you have to be there but rather if you didn't exist and you have to exist....or do they have the same meaning??

  • No, you are correct. It should have been "You have to exist".

  • Exist har lika många stavelser som Be there

  • Mjo.

  • ja me ^^

    (me too..)

She is good live, i have seen her :)

  • thanks for translation;)

  • Had been loving this song for ten years since I first got the CD, without having ever a clue what it meant. The melody is so powerful. Thank you for the translation (and the synopsis!). I can finally get what it's about and enjoy it even more.

  • Yes - truly THE song of the millennium so far . . .

  • This has got to be one of THE songs of the new millennium - truly a masterpiece . . .

  • This moved me to tears - thank you so much for the translation.

  • Jag älskar den här låten!

  • Nice Synopsis aswell!

  • Beautiful - and an excellent translation as well. :)
