Two things, at this time, I believe mathematical knowledge among the masses was at it's prime and damned near everyone in America could do this math, be aware this is a comedie sketch where both Abbott and Costello are fully aware the math they are doing is incorrect, to say that "we've come a long way" since then would be dissingenuous.
