I was assistant Art directer on this. We filmed it on A Stage Shepperton Studios, the same stage Nostromo (Alien) was shot. Howard Guard directed. it was one of the best commercials I did and one of the few where we had a sufficient budget to do the job
The admirable thing about this ad unlike most other ones at the time is that this has not dated whatsoever and still stands the test of time 20-odd years later whereas other ads typical of that era are now a bit kitsch and laughable.
Clowns don't make burgers, dogs and cats can't talk, women don't wear white and go horse riding when they're on their periods and halifax employees don't run a radio station.
I think it was an unwritten law in the 1980's, that this advert should only ever be played whilst blinding sunlight was directly hitting the TV screen.
I think its the British character actor Anthony Valentine. No evidence for this but I think I recognise his voice. He's been a bit player in loads of things, normally an unpopular character or a baddie. I remember him as a nasty Nazi in "Escape to Athena"...awful film (sort of comedy War film...how does that work???) but loved it as a kid.
Love to know what they both look like now and what they up to.
