Love the design. Your cottage is so idiosyncratic. Each space feels so genius with the creative symmetry breaking in the accented shelving. The lighting from the creative shaped windows makes everything feel so surprising. Your home is a true treasure. Thanks for sharing.
This is probably my fave cobb house in video. I love the so many personal touches like the blue bottles in the wall. And I love the built in stuff, shelves and I like the eyes over the bed too. I just love this place. Everytime I watch this I instantly feel warm and cozy. I want one so bad. People always confront me with the statement, "you can't build one in WA state on the Olympic Peninsula cuz of the rain". But I hear it can be done. Look at Europe-thatched roofs 100's yrs old.
with all the glassy looking "retro" homes in the US, it's not as hommy as a hand made claw dome! i the claw is highy unflamible and isn't high matanance as a triditional wood home! WE NEED THESE HOMES IN AMERICA!!
Very nice home! I'm only 22 but one day I will have a cob home built by my own two hands and maybe some help from friends and family! lol I love old things and this to me seems as old school and even fantasy like as one can get in this day and age! Thanks for the share every video like this is pure inspiration for my dreams!
Your house is amazing... congratulations on building it! How long did the project take? I would love to build a house like this... I live in Ireland would a cob structure be able to withstand a lot of rain?
instead of banishing the building codes maybe we should banish the short sided unimaginitive types that are unwilling to work with us. As for me, I am at the point where I cannot stand square corners anywhere
Wow, very beautiful house!!! I plan on building a cob home for my wife and I when I buy some land. I also have the "Hand Sculpted House" by Ianto, Linda & Michael. I love the stained glass windows too! Very romantic and cozy at the same time. I don't know why the norm in the US don't build more with earth instead of wood only? Anyways, nice vid.
Gorgeous. I wish I could find a house like this for myself and my dog. Most houses in the US are ugly, unimaginative, stupid looking, impractical and tasteless.
Finding the land is the hard part, for me at least. Meka built this cottage on someone else's property. He doesn't "own" it. Ianto Evans suggests finding a landowner and offering to build such a place in exchange for 5 years rent free living.
It just occurred to me how insane it is that this would probably not meet most building code laws---a beautiful soulful loving healthful space like this, yet it is perfectly within the laws to abort a child.
Somethin' just ain't right y'all. When do we get back to sanity? Peace.
how beautiful. I can't imagine how much work and time went into this. I don't think I'd be able to do it... maybe one day I'll build a cob oven or a small meditation house... maybe :) .
It's true, it probably took a great deal of time and work. But the work was often play, I think. And how much time do folks spend paying off a mortgage? If I recall, this house only cost about $6000 to build! And it is the most welcoming house I've ever been in.
@robbibaba Yeah, I'm gonna try to save up and get an acre or two. Build one and do all of the windows and furniture by hand. I'm a blacksmith as well, so I should have a lot of fun.
Cob lasts for centuries -- there are very old cob homes in England that are still in fine shape. You just have to keep it dry, but the same can be said for wood.
It will melt in heavy rain--after a hundred years or so! The cobbing process basically creates sedmintary stone. The clay and sand form a chemical/mechanical bond and the straw hold it all together.
But the real answer to your question is: a good roof and possibly a stone facing along the bottom to deflect any backsplash.
Actually, we were just visiting. The wonderful fellow who designed and built it is Meka and his contact info is listed next to the video somewhere. He's an incredible person!
That's beautiful. I loved the crescent window the most. Now, all those niches in the wall, I understand how they can be dug out of the cob wall, but does anyone know how they are done in a strawbale house? I saw them there, too.
With strawbale the niche has to be cut out of the straw. It can be done with an electric carving knife (I bought one at a garage sale for a buck)or some people use a grinder. It's not too hard, as long as the bales aren't stacked so the strings face vertical. You don't want to cut the strings.
I've been a long time fan of cob and straw bale building and have looked longingly at countless pictures (planning for the day when we finally get a chance to build our own)...but this has to be the most beautiful house I've ever seen. The tiniest details are all perfect...niches, shelves, the beautiful buddah eye windows (which must look incredible at night with candles burning!) I'm blown away.
I think maybe the codes are good for developers, to keep them from building dangerous or really shoddy places. But owner-builders should have much more leeway!
You're very welcome. It was a joy to visit this place. Good luck with your building, and if you want some great instruction check out Cobtogether and/or White Oak Farm in Southern Oregon.
Trully beautiful, My dream is to build something similar to this, but i plan to build an underground / earthship hybrid. Thankyou for sharing this video of your wonderful home.
I absolutely love the biomorphic look. I can't step into a conventional building these days without the hard angles of the drywall making me feel cold and unwelcome.
