  • Happy 73rd Birhday Gordon Lightfoot !

  • This song really makes me look at my life in a different light. I am only here a short time enjoy it and yes Gordon You are the man. this is really a great song THANK YOU FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS...

  • I just discovered this song a few months ago and fell in love with it immediately...Classic example of beautiful music...I think I've pushed the views from 45,000 to 47,800 on my own! Thank you Gordon, you are brilliant

  • I tuned 60 last Saturday (May 21) and as a gift to me, I had bought tickets to see Gord in Brockville, ON. I was front & centre only 5 rows back. He played this song and it was simply mesmerizing! He's still got it - even at 72! What a treasure this man is.

  • This is the sound of Canada.

  • i wonder if gord really knows how much he means to his true fans, ive been a fan since i was a kid of 14,i,m 53 now and love everything he has ever done,i hope he lives a long and meaningful life...

  • Rick is one of the greatest bass players ever. His tone just kills on this,

  • Gordon Lightfoot is a true heavyweight of the folk/ballad music world.

  • Pure Class..:)

  • beaupride9, I hear you man. Ive been playing his songs in bars cars the street since 1974. One thing no one can take away from you, the music that plays in your head. Gordon has been a huge inspiration to me in so many ways.

  • Great performance....saw him play this tune live at the Power Center in Ann Arbor Michigan back in 97'....was just blown away.

  • Very rare. I'm an original GL fan, but don't remember this. Thank you Bernard!

  • good music

  • I have passed hours away listening, and then learning Gordon's songs since l969, when I purchased my first two (vinyl) albums of him. Gordon, if you're out there, thank you for inspiring me to learn and enjoy life through the sounds of guitar and your particularly wonderful style of writing and playing. My hat's off to you!

    Dale

  • This song gave me chills and made me tear up when I saw him preform it live at the Nugget some years back........The story of his life..so great.......

  • Terry is the best guitarist I have heard in many decades

    Billy D.

  • Terry rocks too!

  • Gordon, I love your music, all of it.. I have your entire catalogue. I have listened to you everyday for 40 years.. I even sold my Guild F50R and got a D18 to play your songs on...You are at the top of the heap. Beau Prideaux, Victoria, Australia..

    Dale

  • @beaupride9 ive got my goals to Re-learn to play one of these. ( illness and amnesia forced my halt.)i have been to two of his concerts and i hope to one day be able to play at least half as good, with all of his spirit he puts into his playing

  • Magnificent man. Will there ever be another? I seriously doubt it. This is what good music is like. I really feel sorry for todays generation for not appreciating this type of music. Gordon is the best thing ever to come out of Canada. Musically I think he stands at the top of the mountain alone. Our lives are all richer thanks to him.

  • I saw him live near Escanaba, MI in September 2006. He had a mini-stroke minutes before the concert began, and could barely play the guitar at all. He kept dropping the pick, and had to reposition it with his good hand. Yet he stubbornly insisted to continue, obviously against the wishes of his band. It was the first time I ever heard this song, and it sure seemed to fit the moment. My gosh, it was awesome. Finally the band ended the concert early, and they took Gordon away in an ambulance.

  • Hah, I see I already told that story. Thought I might have, but wanted to put it up here at the top again, imagining it was buried far behind other comments.

  • The volume of this song is what music with dynamics is supposed to sound like,

Today's producers like to compress everything to the hilt for the ear-bleeding Ipod generation.

  • ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITES!

  • All of Gordon's songs are distinctly rhythmical and melodic with evocative lyrics that evoke deep memory associations.

  • Beautiful lyrics, beautiful man. Thank you Gord for all the day dreams and memories. You are and will be an inspiration.

  • What a great, great singer-songwriter.

  • love it love it love it. Gordon if you read this Please hit me up. Love ya. Saw ya in Macon. Only brother in the crowd . lol.

  • I love that GL continues to perform. He may be physically more frail especially after getting through a health crisis, but his voice, his love of music, his history, so inspires me. This is a beautiful song. Thank you for posting this!

  • Saw Gordo last night in concert in Columbia SC. He is amazing. Even as I am a 50 year old, he is my favorite ballard singer of all ages. Godspeed and continued longevity Gordo!

  • Canada will not be the same without Mr. Lightfoot

  • GL your words are true.

  • I have always loved Gordon when I lived in the US, but I had never heard this song. It makes my eyes wet and my stomach tighten as time goes by...

  • I've liked Gordon since I was a boy, but only finally saw him in concert in Sept. 2006 near Escanaba, MI. He had a mini-stroke while warming up for the show, but insisted on performing anyway. He was basically unable to hold his guitar pick or play his guitar. His band looked pretty grim. That was the first time I ever heard this song, and it seemed as if it were written special for that occasion. It was really moving. Finally his band almost dragged him off stage and the show ended way early.

  • I remember his attitude during that concert. It seemed some combination of reflectiveness, pride, satisfaction, defiance and determination. They took him away in an ambulance when it was over. I'm glad to read he has performances scheduled for this year.

  • I remember hearing this for the first time live in June of 97' at the Power Centre in Ann Arbor, MI...all I could think was, "damn!!!!"...right from the first note you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium. The lyric and Gord's delivery were one of the highlights of the night...will never forget it. Hard to believe that was 11 years ago now...

  • Very nice. Does anyone know was this pre-illness? I assume so?

  • yes . . before the illness. He's "more gaunt and fragile looking" now, and his voice now has a VERY limited range. Gotta love him, regardless

  • I actually just saw him this friday for the 5th? 6th? time. He's getting more and more frail but it doesn't matter. I love him just the same and his music is just as meaningful. When he performed this one and right after, In My Fashion, you could see the meaning in his eyes and demeanor. Love you Gordy!

  • I love this song and am so happy that you've put it on, but I'm seeming to have a bit of a

problem with the sound being far too low for me to be able to hear. Is it just my ears?! or

maybe you might have a way to adjust the volume a bit? Thanks anyway, either way! Great song and so nice to be able to have it.

  • The volume for this song *is* too low. I had to jack my volume control way up. Still good music!

  • I remember seeing him back in the 70's as a teenager. My wife and I saw him about a month ago at Proctor's in Schenectady where I heard him do this song for the first time. He's still got it. He did alot from "Shadows"- If you are a GL fan, buy this CD! Thanks for posting this. DJChas

  • Thanks so much for making this video available. Shame to say, but many many people of the "younger set" have never heard of G.L. They have missed one of the great ones.

  • I am very proud to be among the 'younger set' who is familiar with Gord. He is my absolute favorite. :)

  • I saw him this last summer in Eugene, Oregon. He is incredible.

  • What a treasure! I remember driving down a snowy country road in Maine, with the wind and snow blowin' . . . and feeling like his voice was whistling through the pines right into my soul. He's one of a kind.

  • @LDean5643 "His voice whistling through my soul.." you nailed it...

  • Thanks for posting this! First time I heard "A Painter Passing Through..." was live and I cried. But sometimes now I chuckle because I know that at the ripe 'ole age of 45, I'd not be able to be running after Gordon. I'm wayyyyyyy to slow and he just keeps going fast and strong!

  • Come back to Wisconsin anytime!

  • He'll be in Appleton on March 30th at the PAC. I plan to attend. Can't Wait!

  • Thanks, we'll check out the details...!

  • Since 1969, I seen GL seven times. Covered his songs, In his prime none better, in his winter great ....glad to have lived in his prime.

  • I saw him at Massey Hall in 1990, he was brilliant! Love ya Gord!

  • Thank you for posting this. Could you please post the entire concert? Thank you much.

  • He is such an amazing man...I get to see him in August, and I'm jumping out of my shoes! :)
