However arguably loose these conventions might be, they still exist. That's what I reckon he dislikes.

@Darkwave70 I am pretty sure he means he dislikes the style; in art, dialouge, storyline, etc. Like western cartoons, most, if not all anime follows a set of conventions - I don't mean for any certain genre, just as a whole. However arguably loose these conventions might be, they still exist. That's what I reckon he dislikes.
For the most part I can sympathize with him. I know many 80s animes were fresh, but most of anime you hear of from the 21st century is tired and formulaic.

Regardless you're more or less right.
Some people likes the overemphasized facial expressions, some don't. I personally avoid drama in my real live, so it's nice to see over dramatized scenarios and people/objects in what I watch from time to time.
