The commentary clarified what was going on, and the director has lots of interesting info he shares about the actors, extras, costs, song writing, why the Christmas decoration are gone at the end, (he was just messing with our heads), ect. I think it's worth buying myself.

there was signifigance, the way i understood it was the movie kind of a defense mechanism that clicked right before he got ready to shoot. With the intention of stopping him from hurting other people or himself. The grief counselor represented the portion of himself that wanted to get help. In the end though he just decided to spare other people. I'm not big on the 'all a dream' endings but i thought this was actually pretty clever. Oh what the mind will do.

If you haven't seen the alternate endings, ending #3 (Lifesaver) was the director's favorite ending, but he chose to go with the featured end to reflect his original idea at the time he wrote the script.

Too bad, definitely ending #3 makes much more sense.

actually he said it was his executive producer and his wife's favorite ending. The director did that ending as a reaction to people saying "Can't it have a happy ending?" He personally said he hates "its all a dream endings" and that ending would be a cop pout of grand porportions. He used the ending that he had always written and believed in. Listen a little better.

How does the ending negate the entire film?? Did u pay attention? The man was nuts and caught in a loop of a lousy life and was asking for a way out the entire film. He was told to find the courage to do the right thing and in the end - he did. He took out the problem - himself - and thus spared everyone else's life. That made him a real hero in many respects, something many of these real quiet men could learn a lesson from. Imagine if the virgina tech shooter had seen this film...
