ok, what in Sam's Hell is goin on withe the cowboy boots and the flower in the hair. I cant quite get past how it just looks wrong. Am I supposed to give her a pass because it was the late 70's?...or do I shoot her stylist in the eye. Usually, I dont nit pick at her clothes because she is who she is...but this little ensemble makes me think thats she's got a bullseye on her back.
You know what you ain't nothing but a wack ass hater. You have no right talking about what the hell she has on. Her outfit is not what matters. When Patti has looked way worst.
@pronkking I can't believe people are ready to shoot you over your critique of her outfit. This queenaretha person makes me ill. Cowboy boots with a billie holiday type hair thing going on and a wierdly fitted cocktail dress yeah, i agree a little off, however She is in INCREDIBLE voice. Yes I realise you didn't say anything bout the vocals. Anyway, I realise what your saying. 70's was a wierd era for fashion.
@DigitalDezinesCEO Did I say that her outfit had anything to do with her performance or that Golden voice, answer: No i didn't fool, and yes I realise this is "old as hell". I didn't say anything about the Queens performance. Did i say i look at her differently over her bad wardrobe? no i didn't. So what i'm saying is read and properly analyse my previous comment. Thank you, Fool.
Thanks so much for this post ArethaFan2006! I LOVE this song... Yeah, where the hell did you get this VIDEO?! I've tried to download this song everywhere, do you have this album by any chance?
Marion Williams, Mahalia, the Caravans(with Ms Shirley Ceaser and Inez Andrew) Dorothy Love Coates were all front and center in the Gospel World before and after Her Majesty began her Glorious Reign
and DITTO: Gladys, Dionne, Cissy, Dee Dee Sharp and Warwick ,Fontella, Martha Reeves, Ruth Brown, La Verne Baker, Betty Everett, Big Maybelle, Etta, Esther Phillips, Gloria Lynne, Nancy Wilson were all pre 1967 in R&B and pop.
What planet did you come from? Dinah was originally a gospel singer who came after SuperStar Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Roberta Martin Singers, The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Soul Stirrers, the Ward Singers, Mahalia etc
Perfect. You hit the nail on the head. Dinah used melisma, although her voice wasn't as flexible as Aretha's. Dinah begets Aretha who begets Whitney, who all the contemporary R&B and some pop singers (i.e. Xtina) try their hardest to imitate, some with more success than others, but Whitney's singing is just a more polished, "mainstream" take on the Aretha formula. It begins and ends with Aretha, who did it first with great success, and did it best.

Yall crazy as hell them riffs and runs have been done by many a black singers it's not a Retha thing...get over it where do you think she got her inspiration?
Aretha looked as if she jumped right off that sofa she was laying/posing on during the photo shoot for the cover of "La Diva" and started singing one of my favorite songs from it. Great sentiment in the words. Kinda syrupy, but sentiments from the heart can be that way sometimes. Thanks for posting.
This is better than the corny strings and Lennon Sisters Singers from the recording.
Both the ballads from the lp had interesting lyrics with killer melodies; Van McCoy's "syrupy" arrangements f'd em up. Solo with just piano she'd of had everybody cryin.
Patti Labelle can eat her heart out on this one, cause this is when Aretha's voice was prime. This is the greatest voice I've ever heard on this video ever. Sound quality is a bit off, but her vocals are untouchable.
At the time of this performance true Aretha fans know her pipes were at their amazing peak. Her fan base had shrunk in 1979 (due to disco and Natalie Cole etc) to its lowest point, but she was SHOCKINGLY POWERFUL even in the back row during this 1975-1980 period and the high notes were pure bell. Material wasn't always the best but the voice was simply unmatched. Sweet Passion, YOU, With Everything I Feel In Me, and La Diva criminally aren't even available and never have been on CD.
This song is titled "What If I Should Ever NEED You?" from the highly underrated last lp from Atlantic: La Diva. Dr. Franklin also recorded "If Ever I Should Leave You" (from Camelot) on her classic Laughing On The Outside lp on Columbia. This posted live version has a better arrangement than the orginal recording which was on the mushy side with too many strings and a Patti Page chorus. THANK YOU for spreading the LOVE.

It's pretty close to what she wore on the La Diva cover. Her vocals here and there are SPECTACULAR.

This live version has a much better arrangement than the recording, which sounded like it was done for Patty Page.
She sang so sweetly during this mid-late 70s era and her voice was at it's most clear and powerful.
