Gentlemen, thank you for helping me to identify the first march. As correctly stated by louislungbubble, it is Figaro, the slow march of the Coldstream Guards.
@trapezemusic It's not Figaro and the hand movement is to signal forward march--or to change the tune in mid march. And he should have been facing once the music started.
When the second band prepares to leave Buckingham Palace, the drum major always faces the band. This is so he can see the St. James's Palace detachment catch up with the band. Once they have closed the gap enough, the drum major turns around and signals for the band to step off.
in fact the first march is the coldstream guards slow march "figaro"..the third march is "chimes of liberty" ..re the drum major, in my opinion the finest example of what a drum major should be was simon Ward of the coldstream guards , now he was spit and polish!! ..he became senior drum major of the H.D around 1987....a real soldier....marty
Very effective drum major for the second segment. He moves his left arm in a special way as he and the band step off to The Bond of Friendship. Does anyone know the first and third marches?
i noticed in the second clip that the drum major is from the coldstream guards but the band looks to be that of the irish guard Is a drum mojor assigned to all of the bands. Can anybody tell me why is this.
Any Drum Major can go out with any band. Doesn't have to be of same regiment. It may have been the senior drum major? It is more common to see with drum major of different regiment rather than their own.
I was raised on military band music and was the third generation of my family to serve in the same regimental band as my grandfather and uncle at the same time. So I guess it comes naturally.
I think what you're referring to is the rifle bearer, right? What you're seeing is the last of him catching up. When they start out, the rifle bearers are in ranks. As they hit the street, the riflemen run to catch up and guard the colours. That's the tradition.

No, the first march is indeed Figaro.
