The Guess Who were such a great band---and not only Burton Cummings' brilliant vocals. They understood that the music must be one part pop and one part attitude with important messages sprinkled throughout. And of course there's GARRY PETERSON on drums.
Burton Cummings has for decades been at the top of my list of the greatest rock vocalists. Listen to this guy's range, power and dynamic ability. There may be others that are about as good, but none better. I'm from Seattle USA, not Canada but I am Grateful for all the amazing Canadian musicians (been a Rush fanatic since 1976).

@123benderson: BC did not want any mistake about where he is from. The song "American Woman" ain't about bitches from California, he's referring to the Statue of Liberty that represents the whole USA.
I really wish there was more music made this this today. My generation needs to step up and take back whats ours, just like our parents protested and came together and there was a movement, thats what we need to do, pretty soon it'll be too late.
this song is not about individualistic morals...but about ...Living Together.... AS A WE...not a ME...get back to the 1940's.... I don't want anything from anyone, I just want to live within a society where ever one pays their own dues. No tax cut for those...hahaha...job creators...this description of the millionaires is a fabrication. They create nothing, but more wealth for themselves, while destroying our country...SHARE THE LAND...now means...SHARE THE WEALTH!
Just 4 dudes jamming but so sincere. This was a time when getting into the music biz was actual work not winning a contest or having the right look. And it was real & live! I've just recently started to get into this band again. This was some of the first music I was exposed to when I was 12 or 13. Thanks Jack! Remember Pep burgers & lime shakes!
Kurt Winter always played with his arms bare...never saw him with full sleeves. Must have been hard to come in behind Randy Bachman. RIP Kurt...I saw you live and you were spot on..
What I love is that many Rock bands back then could sound exactly like the record when they played live, so good that you'd swear it was lip-sync unless you paid attention to realize the little small nuances that gave it away as being live, and this song is not an easy song to pull off vocally either, much less musically. That's talent.
As a teen listening to this gem, I never realized how liberal the lyrics were. Now that I'm a grown up old guy conservative, I concentrate on the beauty of Burton's once in a generation voice.
@BradinPhilippines Wow! You know, I was just thinking the exact same thing! His voice does have
a certain tone that just sounds like it belongs to the seventies! Or maybe it's just that I first heard Burton Cummings when I was an impressionable kid in the 70's.I'll never forget stuff like Levi Superbells, Waffle Stomper shoes, "Keep On Truckin"" patches, gas lines, Blue Chip stamps,,STP stickers,16 oz.Coke for a 25 cents Schwinn Sting-Rays, Duncan Yo-Yo's, Pinball, Drive-in movies I miss it all

Two guitars, bass, keys, vocals, and a simple, 4-piece drum kit. No Marshall stacks piled to the ceiling, or drums so "big" that you can't even see the drummer. What happened to the music?
The sad state of today's music hit me when I was in the magazine section at the supermarket today. I looked down and there staring at me, was a full magazine dedicated to that no-talent Katy Perry. No sooner do I look away from it in disgust when two teenage girls run up, grab the magazine, and start gawking over it! I SO WANTED to say something nasty.

Canada has produced several of my favorite rock bands; pure, artistic, talents. Guess Who is one of them. Thank you from one of your southern neighbors.
Champaign Illinois, Jefferson Airplane and the Guess Who, traveled from SIU in Carbondale and omg, orange sunshine, the van...the show was fun, i mean funny, this song cracked us all up...without losing track,....maybe I'll be there to shake your hand..we just wanted to shake everyones hands......what a die hard party
Great Band!! very good and more like a rock band than the Beatles who were more pop, and the drummer in this band could show Ringo starr a few things on how to liven up drum playing :) .. thanks for posting.
@MegaSamB Hippie** :P And I'm sure he almost cut his hair, it happened just the other day. It was gettin' kinda long, he could have said it was in his way.- But he didn't and he wondered why. He wanted to let his freak flag fly, And I guess he felt like he owed it to someone.
@professordumbledorf ....You have no idea what you missed. You could sit all night long and listen to music that really had a message and you could understand the words. The beat /rythmn kept your mind moving. Thank God above I was alive during this great music era.
@Forwillal I can still listen to all that music all night long. That's the beauty of recordings.....I am listening to it right now as a matter of fact. Music spans generations, not divide.
@Forwillal What was on the radio, yes. The idea of popular music has changed significantly. That said, there are a lot of bands out there right now that can hold up to the Guess Who. Widespread Panic, Phish, Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Moe., My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire......but yeah, I love the 60's early 70's. Great time for music.
@GraditudevsRevenge That's what I always say! I am only 25 but I had a young mom who played good music, if not for her I wouldn't appreciate this great band!
I am only 18 and I listen to this band...in fact. I live in Winnipeg and I am a part of a community jazz band on Bass. Our lead Trombone player is Bill Wallace, the second bass player to co-write songs with Burton Cummings. I tell you that hes a very uncredited musician.
@GraditudevsRevenge That is awesome! I remember my mom and I coloring together and listening to her Guess Who tapes.. or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.. good memories
@seonfox Love it! Im an old kinda Mom now but I WAS an 18 r old Mom when my Son was born.. I am thankful I had the chance to share GREAT music with him... Im still rockin.. LOL, Not in a chair!
I always made sure this song was playing on the 8-track when I was drinking Ripple with a hot chick out on the hilltop. Well... Jimi Hendrix's *1983* too.

@somefreshgarbage What about 'We the People of the Untied States of America'?
We are individuals --and we can simply agree to disagree. It's a peaceful solution and we can still 'Share the Land' as well.
You don't have to loose your individuality to work together as a group.

@pcburgh01 What can I say... we had the greatest music of all times...
Forwillal 7 months ago
@Forwillal What was on the radio, yes. The idea of popular music has changed significantly. That said, there are a lot of bands out there right now that can hold up to the Guess Who. Widespread Panic, Phish, Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Moe., My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire......but yeah, I love the 60's early 70's. Great time for music.
pcburgh01 7 months ago
@Forwillal This is your music.... do you think that in 20 years people will be listening to that or to the 60-70 era?
Bob Seger said it best... todays music ain't got the same soul...just give me that old time rock and roll..

@GraditudevsRevenge That's what I always say! I am only 25 but I had a young mom who played good music, if not for her I wouldn't appreciate this great band!
seonfox 8 months ago
I am only 18 and I listen to this band...in fact. I live in Winnipeg and I am a part of a community jazz band on Bass. Our lead Trombone player is Bill Wallace, the second bass player to co-write songs with Burton Cummings. I tell you that hes a very uncredited musician.

@GraditudevsRevenge That is awesome! I remember my mom and I coloring together and listening to her Guess Who tapes.. or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.. good memories

I always made sure this song was playing on the 8-track when I was drinking Ripple with a hot chick out on the hilltop. Well... Jimi Hendrix's *1983* too.
