The Park school doesn't seem to have much co-operation in the area of utilizing the talents of those who could be writing scripts for the department either. How about using drama actors and directors and writers too? Too much to ask? Just seems like the students in the film/video school have enough to do on the production end without having to write their own scripts and scores. Kudos to you.
As a film major at IC, I think you have a point. I've had good experiences working with student composers on several of my films, and I wonder why structures aren't in place to help people do that. However, the structure of Park, which has every student make his/her own film puts high money and time strains on students, especially on students like me who work several jobs. There isn't always time to get an early final cut of the film to have scored. The entire film program should be reworked.
Just want to say............the school is not as good as you think it is!.........and your right if you want to get work you shouldn't reach out, you should wait for people to reach you.......oh wait thats not how you get work? You have absolutely no idea.......I'm an alum and I know what people really think of Ithaca and it is not what students would like to see----Grad school or no job-end of story
Wow this sounds very familiar! I hope something is set up between the two schools, or at least film majors become aware that there are composers on campus... keep fighting the good fight and bringing our program a good name Lena!
Very passionately put -- don't back down! I think if you're persistant and have people behind you from both programs and prove that you're absolutely serious about this, the professors will come around. Because you're absolutely right. I'm a theatre director, and while it's not at all the same level of complication, the sound designers for our shows are in the production process right from the beginning with all the other designers because they HAVE to be. Good luck!
Hey Lena, I don't know if I told you this, but I almost went to Ithaca. For film, obviously. haha. Also, I was gonna ask if you wanted to score my HP film once I had some footage worth scoring.
You make sense! Maybe you should just show them this video? Or pretty much say the same things because you explain them clearly and succinctly with passion and logic!
That was a really interesting video! You made your points really well and I actually learned a lot from watching it.
The part about needing to learn/communicate with each other while still in college makes a lot of sense. I am in a health care program, and my profs are fighting for interdisciplinary education programs, because we will have to know how to communicate/work together when we're out in the field! It seems like the same issues/needs are there in music/film...
You make perfect sense! It seems crazy no one has thought of this before, but it opens up a great opportunity for you. If you can get these two worlds to communicate and have some viable connection that will be a great service to everyone... and look great on a resume. And, as an aside, your hair looks awesomely cute!
Right now I'm just a sophmore in high school, and I doubt I'll ever think seriously about becoming a composer or a director, but this is the kind of stuff I find interesting. I'm one of those people that likes to learn a little about a lot. I'm happy that now I know if I ever have a friend that decides to be a director, I'll be able to give at leats alittle advice. This is a win-win situation. You get to vent and we get to learn a little :)
I got into Park but I decided to go to Emerson College instead. :) You make a lot of goods points here that I will keep in mind when I need someone to score my film projects. I hope everything works out for you!
When you starting talking about this I was thinking "wait, what?" I had no idea that it was commonplace for film majors to not work with compossing majors! You bring up some excellent points, Lena- I hope you can convince your professors to consider your idea.
And here I was hoping for the yelling and screaming and throwing of things; I am so disappointed. :p
Seriously I think that you make some really good points and that any film school should be able to teach their students how to deal with the actual industry. These are important professional skills people not just something fun on the side!
This was a really great video, and I loved watching it. I'm of course angry that you're angry, but I hope everything works out, and I'm also sure it probably will since you're so passionate about it.
Plus, for me, this video was totally educational (:
Lena - good for you for tackling this. Unfortunately its rarely up to the teachers in the university system. Cross discinplinary work is really difficult just because its so riddled with politics and it all comes down to funding - who gets funds for which students in their classes etc etc etc University politics suck hardcore - but keep trying! It will be worth it!
Lena you are made of Awesome. i think most college students would just be interested in getting through all their classes and graduating, but you actually want to make your program better and leave a legacy. That's incredible.
PS you kinda remind me of Cedric from AVPM - even when you're angry, you can't stop smiling! =)
I dont know much about music or movies, but the way you explain it- it even makes sense to me. I am in awe of how passionate you are about music. Again you continue amaze me. Ps, I also think you are great because in a video where you are ranting you are considerate enough to keep out things that you think are too mean.
I completely agree. It's kind of the same when it comes with directors communicating with the writer (book or story into movie). It's good to have all different sides of the industry meet and learn from one another and learn how to work with each other BEFORE they have to go out into the real world. It should be a mandatory project.
This all makes complete sense to me. Film students not learning to communicate with composers would be like someone who wants to be a high school principal not learning to communicate with the teachers. There needs to be teamwork and once they get out in the real world, they'll wish they had that experience.
I hope that everything gets worked out eventually, but until then, keep standing up for yourself :)
Oh Lena! I hope that things work out for you at the other students! :) I'm sorry I can't help with the skirt-hole issue, but I think your hair looks wonderful today!
You make me wanna punch my face!
