When major record companies would'nt put out music videos for artists, BET and Video Soul allowed artists to make promo videos in the studios like this performance right here. Only BET programs like Video LP and Video Vibrations would replay the videos like music videos so unfortunatley, other popular shows like New York Hot Tracks and Night Tracks had no access to them.
