I worked for Rick Goddard - he is one of the finest American's I've ever met and does not have a prejudice bone in his body. This is ridiculous and Olbermann is an idiot!!!!
hey i have a good one. How about the worst person could be bill ayers, or Rev Wright, oh oh oh or Barack Obama. Im glad a left wing cable news show only elects right winged "worst" people. Obama= now military strategy, no governing experience, but hey, he can skip ballots and vote D when he isn't voting present.
I like how he uses the democratic convention as his talking point for msnbc beating "fix" news in ratings. Liberals will choose to watch a liberal convention on a liberal network instead of a conservative network. Good detective work there genius.
This is a smear from the co-dufus at MSNBC. Rick Goddard is a good guy and certainly a much needed alternative to Jim who WILL NOT stand up to Nancy Pelosi's queen regime.
Jim Marshall hides behind Pelosi's skirt and pretends to be for immigration security, then refuses to oppose his Dear Leader and force her to bring the fence to a vote.
What's the theme Keithy? My guess is that you hate conservatives. Am I right?
And Keith, stop trying to deny how many people in your very own news organization can't stand you. You are toxic and a cancer to every work environment you've been in.
MSNBC's ratings stink. He's the only one who has any, about 1.5M. Not great by most network's standards, but better than any other show on their shitty network. He just bitches with such drama, that dickheads like you, about 1% of the adults in this country, flock to him because they hate so much. Yes, his co-workers hate him you dumbshit, every place he's worked, he has pissed good people off. The exec's who hired him - hate him, but they hold their noses, because a few dickheads like u watch.
Yea... Baseless claims are baseless... And, "flock to him because they hate so much"... err... have you looked in a mirror lately? Here you are swearing, trying to defame Olbermann and generally carrying on a pork chop and you accuse ME of spouting hatred? Major hypocracy right there... Where exactly do you get this stuff?
Look into it. You claim my point is baseless, is that an assumption, or do you know anything about Olbermann's past?
Yeah, I get a little pissy about idiot lemmings that defend the guy when they don't know what they're talking about. And if you paid attention, I didn't accuse you of "spouting" hatred, I just made the observation that he feeds a hatred that his fans eat up. You want to argue that point, be my guest. Do you really think serious people at NBC like him? Try reading.
The onus of proof is on the one making the assertion... You claim Olbermann's co-workers hate him, so it's up to YOU to provide the supporting evidence, otherwise your claims can be dismissed as baseless, it's as simple as that... Cough up the proof, or I'll continue to dismiss your claims as basless...
As for the hatred thing, again, how exactly does he spout hate? Again, the onus falls on you to prove it, mate...
Hey Broadsword, get bent. I've heard several radio sports people mention it, and the rumors have been swirling for months, with Anonomous sources (NBC employees) saying that KeithO is stepping on toes, trying to flex his muscle and generally pissing people off. That may not get anyone convicted in a court of law, but most people would get the drift. I couldn't give a shit if that's not enough proof for you. How do you prove someone is an asshole? And I consider character assassination to be hate
To paraphrase Sir. Topham Hat; "Ho, ho, well then your claims are completely baseless and you shouldn't listen to rumors, klrdotorg."
Incredible as it might sound, no, the unspported claims of some guy on YouTube don't constitute proof. That, my friend, is a rumor. All you're essentially telling me is that, "Oh, I heard Keith Olbermann's co-workers hate him" and you're expecting me to believe it with no supporting evidence. News flash mate, I don't listen to rumors...
Either cough up the evidence or concede the debate. "How do you prove someone is an asshole?" Well, even if you can't, you can certainly prove that he's being unfair or unkind to his co-workers by citing a valid source (no, "what I heard" doesn't count). As for character assasination, you do realise the "worst person" segment is semi-satirical, right? Mostly he points out the amusing hypocracies and screw-ups of people. Mostly right-wingers, certainly, but that doesn't make him a hate spouter.
Asshole evidence, kind of a dumb debate topic, don't ya think - mate? And people/co-workers usually don't go "on the record" to air personality differences. It's just not usually done that way here. So people do leak things to the media. And it gets printed by both liberal and conservative journalists. You can look for it, I've seen it. Concede the debate? Get bent buddy. I get the satire and I've seen enough of KO's special rants (now those are funny) to recognize an asshole when I see one.
"So people do leak things to the media. And it gets printed by both liberal and conservative journalists."
So link me to these articles then, go on. Otherwise baseless claims continue to be baseless. Come on mate, if these articles exist, don't keep me in the dark. I'm not going to go looking for them because asi said it's up to the one making the proposition to provide the supporting evidnece. You can tell me to get bent all you like, but I can tell you're getting frustrated...
Clearly you aren't used to people sticking to their guns no matter how many times you repeat your apparently baseless claims and tell them to 'get bent'... You must realise that I cannot, in all good conscience and out of respect for a fellow human (Olbermann that is) just believe what you say, I need evidence, and the debate process stipulates that you too need evidence, otherwise your claims can be dismissed as basless... simple as that...
"Asshole evidence, kind of a dumb debate topic, don't ya think - mate?"
I agree, but then YOU brought it up... You claimed Olbermann's co-workers hate him, I called bullshit and now it's up to you to provide the supporting evidence...
At the time, I didn't have time to provide the "asshole evidence" you were looking for. But here's one of the articles that I read. New Yorker Magazine, "One Angry Man" by Peter Boyer, June 23, 2008. It's easy to find on-line. The other "evidence" were sports radio discussions (maybe you document these things, I don't), political talk radio - where the sources of these comments were not the hosts, but co-workers of KO, and some online articles which reiterated the comments. Didn't document that.
I've now read the article and I must say, it's certainly an interesting look into the Man Named Kieth... We all know he has a distinct liberal bias, no one's arguing that, but, being MSNBC's O'Reilly, he's supposed to... The difference is that Olbermann uses facts and reason (for the most part) to support the left, while O'Reilly uses his loud voice and overbearing ego to support the right...
As for him being as asshole, from what I can see is that it's no such much the Olbermann's co-workers hate him so much as it is that he has strong convictions and is not willing to roll over and be a 'good boy', thus making him 'diffult' as far as a typical TV media is concerned... That hardly makes him a bad person...
The only thing I can see in that article that would qualify his co-workers as hating him was the thing that happened before he joined MSNBC where a female co-anchor was apparently reduced to tears on more than one occasion, which may have been a case of either Olbermann being unkind, the woman being overly sensitive or both... Either way, it's the only real example I can see and it was a long time ago..
This article came out about 3 months b4 I made my claim. Much has happended since then. And it was during the convention coverage - when the shit started hitting the fan. The NYer article was only a minor source for my comment. But, it does hint at what later started to come out about KO, and Boyer is a liberal. I listened to an audio Q&A with Boyer and that shed even more light. He delved more into Olbermann's connection w/ Kos, etc. and how real journalists no longer take him seriously.
So what was it Olbermann apparently did during the convention coverage that was SOOO TERRIBLE that it made all his co-workers spotaneously hate him, other than bring his bias in what was supposed to be non-commentary journalism? Did he punch one of them or something? I hardly think so... So what the hell was it!?
"So what was it Olbermnan apparently did ... that was SOOO TERRIBLE..." Why don't you check into it for me, sword, and let me know. It kind of goes back to one of my first comments, the guy is an asshole. You don't believe it? You don't even watch his show. Do your own investigating.
I love the way you guys say that you know KO is biased, but he backs up his statements/opinion with facts/good sources. And, of course, the mandatory comparison w/O'Reilly, where BillO just makes stuff up, and yells at his guests. My brief response: Bullshit. I listen to a fair amount of liberal talk shows,(as well as conservative) and most of them, the serious ones, are far more honest than KO. I would even say that Rachel Maddow is more intellectually honest that Olbermann. KO makes shit up.
I'll give you one example (of many) where KO made shit up (lied). Remember the Brittish terror cell who planned to use liquid explosives to blow-up airliners inbound to the U.S.? The reason we can't bring a bottle of H2o on a flight. KO ridiculed this story as Bush propoganda. I saw him do this on his show several times. About 2 weeks ago, Dateline (NBC) did a full hour on this topic. The plot was real, was days from happening, and it could have been worse than 9/11. Did KO correct the record?
You do realise we're not even on topic anymore, right? From what I've seen of his 'worst person' segments (that's all I watch here on YouTube and I don't get MSNBC on Foxtel, the only American ones I get being CNN, Fox 'News' and CNBC), he usually either makes fun of something obviously stupid, or quotes another media source in order to make something no quite as obviously stupid obviously stupid... That's just my observation of him...
idk about ppl in the north but the word uppity down here is a racist term it was used against blacks back n da day who wouldn't take crap from racist whites nn him being from georgia he should know better but I guess not
I was always told never mention your opponent and never mention your enemy. This fact alone indicates Keith is upset that Mr O'Reilly's superior ratings get to him.
On another note. Everyone "loved" Obama before the conventions. He had a 10 point lead, which is now a 2 point loss, and I'd assume Democrats hate "FIxed News" as Keith calls it. Fact is FOX had 2 Million more viewers on average than MSNBC.
The Southern culture has layers of culture unknown in other regions, subtleties in meaning and nuance. MysticNinjaJay has an accurate interpretation; it has nothing to do with Olbermann.
Gallup Poll 06 Sept:
81% of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction; 75% think corporations have too much control over people's lives; 65% think the two parties don't work.
google "freddie fannie crisis" and "bush nazi history". Just check it.
Wait a minute. He's the WPiW because he said "Uppity" and it's "traditionally" followed by "the n word". Who's tradition is that? I've never heard of an "Uppity Negro". But then again I'm Not a Democrat. This must be what they call Clarence Thomas, Allen Keyes and Condi Rice. I have heard the term used in a self deprecating way by women. Uppity Blues Women. There was a play about uppity women, I forget the title.
I guess KO hasn't yet figured out why he was fired. When does he leave?
I don't ever hear it used at all. That is the dictionary definition. Traditionally it has been used in a derogatory context against affluent African-Americans who "didn't know their place" in the eyes of White Southerners. They called them "Uppity Negroes".
Get out of the house occasionally. It used to always be followed by n-----, and if the word was not used, you assumed that the person was black, or before that, Negro, and were genuinely surprised if he or she was not.
Sorry, I'm half your age, and have never, ever heard it once used that way. Ever think it may also be a regional thing? And thanks for your (odd) concern about me and my "leaving the house". If I hear this phrase used tomorrow, I'll be sure to let you know.
My grand father and most of my uncles used the word "uppity" as a derogatory statement because of the era they were raised in. Im in my 30's and know better that to use that word in any context because it is demeaning and I'm not a racist. Anyone who is over the age of 40 knows exactly what that word implies especially when said to a black american. They can try and defend the tearm all they want, if it wasn't meant as a racist comment they should at least know to choose there words better.
You're absolutely right. The point we've been making to InvestigatorDave, which he refuses to acknowledge, is that it is common knowledge that the word uppity has historically racist connotations when applied to Blacks. The Obamas are Black and he used that word against them so the suspicion that he meant it in a derogatory, racist context consciously or unconsciously is not unfounded. Goddard has chosen to feign ignorance on the issue. I have my doubts about his sincerity.
Had he said that he didn't mean it the way it was interpreted but acknowledged that it was a poor choice of words he probably would not have received this backlash from the media. I suspect that he knows the word's history and used it unconsciously, meaning he often calls Blacks uppity and doesn't notice he is doing it. By contrast the people who overemphasize Obama's middle name consciously know why they are doing it then pretend they are victims of political correctness when criticized.
1. Bill-o has no reason to speak of ratings. He always lies and gets caught. CNN won the ratings, Fox was last for the DNC, and barely above MSNBC for the RNC. Dave, this message is for you. Start looking at independent ratings boards and stay out of FNC please.
2. Another New York newspaper to wipe with.
3. The "N" word is racist no matter what or no matter who uses it. It should be banned, period.
In the future, you may want to use the cleverly labled "reply" button when replying. It facilitates communication.
MSNBC came in dead last for DNC and RNC. That's a fact. You may not like it, but it's a fact. I provided a NYTimes citation for my claim, can you provide evidence for yours?
You may not like NYTimes, but doesn't mean they're wrong.
Who is arguing that the "N word" is not racist? In fact, who is using the "N word" in this discussion at all?
Hey dork, maybe you need to pay attention. Notice I said in another discussion with you that I only watch MSNBC for KO, so I care not if they have low ratings, I was just quoting the Nielsens. Also, my rant is in three parts, one for each worst person. Look at part 3, where I talk about that asshole politico using the N-word, not you genius. I suggest you actually watch the whole clip before going on a lost talking point. Also, every NYC newspaper sucks, and is full of misinformation.
"Uppity" is used as a way to demean women by downgrading them to Black. Get it? Generally: "Uppity" was a term used after the Civil War to indicate a Black person, almost always male, who was forgetting his place as less than white and still a virtual slave. It was usually meant to indicate a "Ni****" who needed to be punished and always invoked fear of black reprisals against whites ala "call up the KKK". It is shameful that anyone would use this term in today's society.
Many terms have deep roots and insinuations that are meaningful but unspoken. A poster above suggested "snotty" would be a fine substitute is worth looking at
I think the kind of person I would refer to as "snotty" the general profile is a rich/self-entitled white male who thinks the world owes him something and that he's smarter than average folks by virtue of race & wealth. The poster above doesn't realize that the substitution would be exactly inverted.
Interesting that you have your own set of connotations to assign to "snotty", and have decided that there are other connotations we must all assign to "uppity", but you don't allow for anyone to have a different thought. You don't even allow for the possibility that someone could just be using the Webster's definition of the word, and without all kinds of your baggage attached to it.
So we're free to believe whatever we want, as long as it's what you believe, huh?
search Howard Cossell and "monkey" if you need an example of how it is not the speakers belief that counts but the listener's understanding. If you don't understand what words can mean you shouldn't use them. LOL
Bad analogy. As monkeys are not known for their running ability, it was a stupid thing for Coselle to say. "Look at that deer run" would have made more sense. "Monkey" in this context would have to indicate a relationship of some kind to Art Monk. The only obvious one being the racial slur variety.
Uppity in and of itself is not a word to avoid.
I have a very good understanding of what words mean, which is why I understand what "uppity" means. I will use it when applicable - not often.
LOL...you know nothing about the event, Cossell using the phrase or the hell Cossell had been catching because he was NOT racist...read about the event...LOL...you question the analogy in the event but not the event...LOL...maybe you should take a course in logic first! LOL
Sounds like you need to win an argument. I don't mind walking away from a person who will remain ignorant to win. LOL...idiot.
I know nothing of the event? Really? I was watching the MNF game when he said it (you, according to your profile were a child or not born yet). In summary and shortened version, I described the event in which Coselle referred to Art Monk running down the field. Coselle said, "Look at the monkey run."
What Coselle said was wrong, which agrees with your point, making my logic your logic.
I don't need to win the argument, and don't need vocab police telling me what words I may and may not use.
Concurrent outcomes does not indicate equally sound logic.
As for your knowledge, viewing something and actually understanding that same thing are not inclusive. Example: You report seeing words such as "uppity" used in a reasonable way while the general understanding of the term is different from your perception. You have the right to your take on events, but the facts of the language still stand.
2nd: abandonning discussion re: Coselle? You'd kind of have to.
3rd: having used words, (appropriate words and in appropriate context) my entire career, I really don't need a lecture/warning from you about how to use them. You can let the vocab police and every other group meddle with your use of language if you choose, but that just limits one's ability to communicate.
BTW - Feel free to use them but don't act surprised when other people see you as an ignorant person for using them and claiming no such connotations were intended. It simply makes you appear either backward or dumb.
What BO said about the overall ratings was correct. KO started slicing and dicing the numbers to make a point -- but not a rebuttal.
It would be interesting to see if there are any other witnesses to the supposed quote by Mitchell. Any corraborating evidence that KO just "forgot" to mention?
Now KO gets to be the world's vocabulary police? There is nothing wrong with the word the candidate used. That KO associates it with a derogatory racial slur says more about KO than the candidate.
no it doesn't. It says the candidate is either completely out of touch with reality - or he was making racial comments with a plan to plead ignorance in the first place.
I am fairly certain you don't read minds, so you cannot say what the candidate was thinking/planning when he used the word. Uppity is completely fine word, and can be used in many contexts. The candidate could have also said "snotty", but that is too coarse of a word to use.
It appears that you have the same mind-set as Olbermann and cannot separate the perfectly good word "uppity" from a negative racially derogatory word.
The connotations that you and Keith put on the word are not necessarily the world's reality -- so a user of that word would hardly be out of touch with reality when using it.
But you two keep patrolling the streets as vocabulary police to keep us all safe, OK?
You accuse Olbermann of being a vocabulary police, as if to say that his accusation is unfounded. The reality is that the word uppity does have historically racist connotations when applied to African-Americans. The idea that Goddard, a Southern White man, did not know this is not believable. Not only did he label the Obamas this but Olbermann was able to find another example of him using uppity to describe an African-American. So there is a pattern. I wonder how often he says it to Whites.
Yes, I find Olbermann acting as vocabulary police. There is nothing wrong with the word, and the connotation Olbermann provided actually required Olbermann to add what is truly an offensive racial word to make the case.
There is nothing, in and of itself, wrong with the word "uppity", and its use should not be discontinued because Olbermann says so.
I don't know how many times candidate has used it towards whites. Do you? If he did, would it be OK with you and Keith?
The word has racist connotations when applied to Blacks. That is a fact, not something Olbermann made up unlike this garbage about Obama calling Palin a pig. If there were several recent examples of him calling Whites uppity a decent argument could be made that the word is simply a part of his vocabulary and its usage against Obama is merely a coincidence. As it is I'm not buying his claim to be unaware of its racist connotations.
You, and apparently BennyBoy, believe it has racial connotations. Not everyone does. It is a perfectly good word that means no more than what it means unless coupled with a racial slur.
I don't know if there are examples of him using the word in relation to whites, (or asians -- there are more than two races). You probably don't know either. You, however, will assume he hasn't without evidence.
If you believe him to be a racist, and you find racism offensive, then don't vote for him.
You're the one making assumptions. I never said that I was convinced that he was a racist because he used the word uppity. I said that I was not convinced that he was unaware of the word's historically racist connotations. There may be people that are ignorant of its racist connotations. The word when applied to Blacks is nonetheless suggestive and no you don't need to attach Negro to the phrase to recognize it as a condescending remark.
Then you are making assumptions that he meant the word to be used in a racial insulting way. And, you don't know this to be true.
If one is using "uppity" in a condescending way that is also racially motivated, it would have to be coupled with a racial designation. Because you and Keith most closely identify it with blacks does not mean that everyone does, or that the word can't be used without a racial designation to mean nothing more than "uppity" as defined in any dictionary you consult.
No, I'm noting the fact that it is common knowledge in America that the word uppity has racial connotations when applied to Blacks. Goddard may not has meant it in a racial context and he may be ignorant of its racial connotations. It may just be a word he commonly uses. I've acknowledged that possibility. But I doubt it. I suspect that he was being unconsciously racist towards the Obamas when using the word.
You're being intellectually dishonest when you say that I, Bennyboy and Keith closely identify it with Blacks. It's a widely known connotation. Are you challenging that claim? You may disagree with our suspicions but that doesn't mean they are unfounded. Obama has been victim to many racist attacks from the Right during this campaign as well as being accused of being Elitist. Given the word's historically racist connotations I am suspicious of Goddard's motive for using it.
Fine. Be suspicious. In fact, withhold your vote from him in protest if that helps. In the meantime, those of us who wish to use the word without racial overtones will continue to do so, and hopefully without harrassment fom the vocabulary police (you, Bennyboy, Keith, et al).
You can use whatever words you like. But words have consequences. Goddard wouldn't get my vote whether he said the word are not. My point is that Olbermann's suspicions are not unfounded. Media feedback on the behavior of politicians is not harassment.
1. Thanks for your permission to use the words of my choice. It bolsters my 1st ammendment rights so strongly.
2. Agreed that words have consequences, but it should be for the word used, not the word(s) NOT used.
3. You wouldn't vote for Goddard regardless of what he said, so why the outrage over what he said.
4. Media feedback on politicians is a good thing, and also part of 1st ammendment, but I'm sure media will feel more confident doing so with your blessing here.
2. Yes, and then don't ignore it. Just don't agree with you that "uppity" is one of them.
3. As we all are.
4. Actually, Keith was listed as part of the group that in concert are harrassing others in their word use. You may not find it harrassing, but then I don't find "uppity" as a stand alone word, to be offensive. If KO has a problem with this guy, I guess I'd just rather see harrassment over something substantial.
2. Are you denying that the word Uppity has historically racist connotations when applied to Blacks? It's one thing to say that not everyone who uses it means it in a racist way but the word still has such connotations.
4.Keith's feedback is not unfounded. Harassing, IMO, would be to demonize someone over something unfounded like the Obama lipstick "controversy."
Taken it. Jr. High School, High School, College too. Technically, I could cross it off, but as I continue to read American History, it is never really done.
Perhaps you could clarify what taking such a class would do for me vis-a-vis this topic.
I'll offer three books you should read. They are real texts and will help you. Specific to race (balanced)a good intro if you have a grounding in general US History: A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America ISBN-10: 0316831115 General: both by Richard Hofstadter Social Darwinism in American Thought ISBN: 0807055034 The American Political Tradition ISBN: 0679723153 I am happy to hear you are willing to expand your knowledge! If interested: Ordinary Men ISBN: 0060995068
"Dave" doesn't want to expand his knowledge but defend a indefensible position. This guy most likely argued that "Nig***" is really a term for "members of a dark skinner race" (Webster's definition #3) and has no racist connotations.
This guy is a numnut.
BUT...all the books I posted are truly informative reads! :)
No need. Your rigid defense of an irrational position makes my point.
You understand the word to mean something else...yet you post that belief to the world and then cry foul when the generally accepted implication of the term is referenced.
LOL...I have better things to do than try to give you an apparently unwanted logical conclusions about your evidence. If you think that means I quit than OK, no skin off my nose. I do not have the time to engage with irrational thinking since it is nonproductive communication.
I started with a civil conversation about language and you decided to spoil for a fight. Fine, you win: You really are being persecuted by the "vocab police"...LOL.
Don't feel "persecuted" by vocab police, and never stated as much. Just don't appreciate them. If you value the ability to express yourself, you probably shouldn't appreciate them either.
If you'll notice, regarding civil conversation, you are the only one of us that has devolved to name calling ("numbnut" twice, with adjective "snotty" once). So much for "civil" too, huh?
I worked for Rick Goddard - he is one of the finest American's I've ever met and does not have a prejudice bone in his body. This is ridiculous and Olbermann is an idiot!!!!

And I consider character assassination to be hate
klrdotorg 3 years ago
To paraphrase Sir. Topham Hat; "Ho, ho, well then your claims are completely baseless and you shouldn't listen to rumors, klrdotorg."
Incredible as it might sound, no, the unspported claims of some guy on YouTube don't constitute proof. That, my friend, is a rumor. All you're essentially telling me is that, "Oh, I heard Keith Olbermann's co-workers hate him" and you're expecting me to believe it with no supporting evidence. News flash mate, I don't listen to rumors...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
Either cough up the evidence or concede the debate. "How do you prove someone is an asshole?" Well, even if you can't, you can certainly prove that he's being unfair or unkind to his co-workers by citing a valid source (no, "what I heard" doesn't count). As for character assasination, you do realise the "worst person" segment is semi-satirical, right? Mostly he points out the amusing hypocracies and screw-ups of people. Mostly right-wingers, certainly, but that doesn't make him a hate spouter.
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
Asshole evidence, kind of a dumb debate topic, don't ya think - mate? And people/co-workers usually don't go "on the record" to air personality differences. It's just not usually done that way here. So people do leak things to the media. And it gets printed by both liberal and conservative journalists. You can look for it, I've seen it. Concede the debate? Get bent buddy. I get the satire and I've seen enough of KO's special rants (now those are funny) to recognize an asshole when I see one.
klrdotorg 3 years ago
"So people do leak things to the media. And it gets printed by both liberal and conservative journalists."
So link me to these articles then, go on. Otherwise baseless claims continue to be baseless. Come on mate, if these articles exist, don't keep me in the dark. I'm not going to go looking for them because asi said it's up to the one making the proposition to provide the supporting evidnece. You can tell me to get bent all you like, but I can tell you're getting frustrated...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
Clearly you aren't used to people sticking to their guns no matter how many times you repeat your apparently baseless claims and tell them to 'get bent'... You must realise that I cannot, in all good conscience and out of respect for a fellow human (Olbermann that is) just believe what you say, I need evidence, and the debate process stipulates that you too need evidence, otherwise your claims can be dismissed as basless... simple as that...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
"Asshole evidence, kind of a dumb debate topic, don't ya think - mate?"
I agree, but then YOU brought it up... You claimed Olbermann's co-workers hate him, I called bullshit and now it's up to you to provide the supporting evidence...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
At the time, I didn't have time to provide the "asshole evidence" you were looking for. But here's one of the articles that I read. New Yorker Magazine, "One Angry Man" by Peter Boyer, June 23, 2008. It's easy to find on-line. The other "evidence" were sports radio discussions (maybe you document these things, I don't), political talk radio - where the sources of these comments were not the hosts, but co-workers of KO, and some online articles which reiterated the comments. Didn't document that.
klrdotorg 3 years ago
I've now read the article and I must say, it's certainly an interesting look into the Man Named Kieth... We all know he has a distinct liberal bias, no one's arguing that, but, being MSNBC's O'Reilly, he's supposed to... The difference is that Olbermann uses facts and reason (for the most part) to support the left, while O'Reilly uses his loud voice and overbearing ego to support the right...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
As for him being as asshole, from what I can see is that it's no such much the Olbermann's co-workers hate him so much as it is that he has strong convictions and is not willing to roll over and be a 'good boy', thus making him 'diffult' as far as a typical TV media is concerned... That hardly makes him a bad person...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
The only thing I can see in that article that would qualify his co-workers as hating him was the thing that happened before he joined MSNBC where a female co-anchor was apparently reduced to tears on more than one occasion, which may have been a case of either Olbermann being unkind, the woman being overly sensitive or both... Either way, it's the only real example I can see and it was a long time ago..
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
Other than that, it's really more than Olbermann's strong convictions don't always perform in NBC's best interests...
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
This article came out about 3 months b4 I made my claim. Much has happended since then. And it was during the convention coverage - when the shit started hitting the fan. The NYer article was only a minor source for my comment. But, it does hint at what later started to come out about KO, and Boyer is a liberal. I listened to an audio Q&A with Boyer and that shed even more light. He delved more into Olbermann's connection w/ Kos, etc. and how real journalists no longer take him seriously.
klrdotorg 3 years ago
So what was it Olbermann apparently did during the convention coverage that was SOOO TERRIBLE that it made all his co-workers spotaneously hate him, other than bring his bias in what was supposed to be non-commentary journalism? Did he punch one of them or something? I hardly think so... So what the hell was it!?
SirBroadsword 3 years ago
"So what was it Olbermnan apparently did ... that was SOOO TERRIBLE..." Why don't you check into it for me, sword, and let me know. It kind of goes back to one of my first comments, the guy is an asshole. You don't believe it? You don't even watch his show. Do your own investigating.
klrdotorg 3 years ago
I love the way you guys say that you know KO is biased, but he backs up his statements/opinion with facts/good sources. And, of course, the mandatory comparison w/O'Reilly, where BillO just makes stuff up, and yells at his guests. My brief response: Bullshit. I listen to a fair amount of liberal talk shows,(as well as conservative) and most of them, the serious ones, are far more honest than KO. I would even say that Rachel Maddow is more intellectually honest that Olbermann. KO makes shit up.
klrdotorg 3 years ago
I'll give you one example (of many) where KO made shit up (lied). Remember the Brittish terror cell who planned to use liquid explosives to blow-up airliners inbound to the U.S.? The reason we can't bring a bottle of H2o on a flight. KO ridiculed this story as Bush propoganda. I saw him do this on his show several times. About 2 weeks ago, Dateline (NBC) did a full hour on this topic. The plot was real, was days from happening, and it could have been worse than 9/11. Did KO correct the record?
klrdotorg 3 years ago
You do realise we're not even on topic anymore, right? From what I've seen of his 'worst person' segments (that's all I watch here on YouTube and I don't get MSNBC on Foxtel, the only American ones I get being CNN, Fox 'News' and CNBC), he usually either makes fun of something obviously stupid, or quotes another media source in order to make something no quite as obviously stupid obviously stupid... That's just my observation of him...

When does he leave?
mousepotato64 3 years ago
I always thought "uppity" just meant arrogant and snobbish. I've definitely never heard it used as a racist remark. Ever.
ntf284 3 years ago
I don't ever hear it used at all. That is the dictionary definition. Traditionally it has been used in a derogatory context against affluent African-Americans who "didn't know their place" in the eyes of White Southerners. They called them "Uppity Negroes".
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago 2
oh, ok thanks. Never heard it that way.
ntf284 3 years ago
Get out of the house occasionally. It used to always be followed by n-----, and if the word was not used, you assumed that the person was black, or before that, Negro, and were genuinely surprised if he or she was not.
Scyllax 3 years ago
Sorry, I'm half your age, and have never, ever heard it once used that way. Ever think it may also be a regional thing? And thanks for your (odd) concern about me and my "leaving the house". If I hear this phrase used tomorrow, I'll be sure to let you know.
ntf284 3 years ago
What a piece of human excrement Olberman is...."Upetty is usually followed by the N- word" ....Try again Overbite you idiot!
Johnny4787 3 years ago
My grand father and most of my uncles used the word "uppity" as a derogatory statement because of the era they were raised in. Im in my 30's and know better that to use that word in any context because it is demeaning and I'm not a racist. Anyone who is over the age of 40 knows exactly what that word implies especially when said to a black american. They can try and defend the tearm all they want, if it wasn't meant as a racist comment they should at least know to choose there words better.
egrimnes 3 years ago
You're absolutely right. The point we've been making to InvestigatorDave, which he refuses to acknowledge, is that it is common knowledge that the word uppity has historically racist connotations when applied to Blacks. The Obamas are Black and he used that word against them so the suspicion that he meant it in a derogatory, racist context consciously or unconsciously is not unfounded. Goddard has chosen to feign ignorance on the issue. I have my doubts about his sincerity.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago 2

ZXY:
In the future, you may want to use the cleverly labled "reply" button when replying. It facilitates communication.
MSNBC came in dead last for DNC and RNC. That's a fact. You may not like it, but it's a fact. I provided a NYTimes citation for my claim, can you provide evidence for yours?
You may not like NYTimes, but doesn't mean they're wrong.
Who is arguing that the "N word" is not racist? In fact, who is using the "N word" in this discussion at all?
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
Hey dork, maybe you need to pay attention. Notice I said in another discussion with you that I only watch MSNBC for KO, so I care not if they have low ratings, I was just quoting the Nielsens. Also, my rant is in three parts, one for each worst person. Look at part 3, where I talk about that asshole politico using the N-word, not you genius. I suggest you actually watch the whole clip before going on a lost talking point. Also, every NYC newspaper sucks, and is full of misinformation.

Then again, I could be wrong. I'm not a big fan of racists.
xeromoto 3 years ago
"Uppity" is used as a way to demean women by downgrading them to Black. Get it? Generally: "Uppity" was a term used after the Civil War to indicate a Black person, almost always male, who was forgetting his place as less than white and still a virtual slave. It was usually meant to indicate a "Ni****" who needed to be punished and always invoked fear of black reprisals against whites ala "call up the KKK". It is shameful that anyone would use this term in today's society.
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago 3
"Ya learn something new everyday"
Not being facetious, I really didn't know that.

xeromoto 3 years ago
No worries :)
Stay Curious! I do!
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
Hi, I'm the poster above.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
it won't post!
search Howard Cossell and "monkey" if you need an example of how it is not the speakers belief that counts but the listener's understanding. If you don't understand what words can mean you shouldn't use them. LOL
Have fun!
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
Bad analogy. As monkeys are not known for their running ability, it was a stupid thing for Coselle to say. "Look at that deer run" would have made more sense. "Monkey" in this context would have to indicate a relationship of some kind to Art Monk. The only obvious one being the racial slur variety.
Uppity in and of itself is not a word to avoid.
I have a very good understanding of what words mean, which is why I understand what "uppity" means. I will use it when applicable - not often.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
LOL...you know nothing about the event, Cossell using the phrase or the hell Cossell had been catching because he was NOT racist...read about the event...LOL...you question the analogy in the event but not the event...LOL...maybe you should take a course in logic first! LOL
Sounds like you need to win an argument. I don't mind walking away from a person who will remain ignorant to win. LOL...idiot.
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
I know nothing of the event? Really? I was watching the MNF game when he said it (you, according to your profile were a child or not born yet). In summary and shortened version, I described the event in which Coselle referred to Art Monk running down the field. Coselle said, "Look at the monkey run."
What Coselle said was wrong, which agrees with your point, making my logic your logic.
I don't need to win the argument, and don't need vocab police telling me what words I may and may not use.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
Concurrent outcomes does not indicate equally sound logic.
As for your knowledge, viewing something and actually understanding that same thing are not inclusive. Example: You report seeing words such as "uppity" used in a reasonable way while the general understanding of the term is different from your perception. You have the right to your take on events, but the facts of the language still stand.
As I said above, I suggest reading those books.
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
1st: so much for "done with you", huh?
2nd: abandonning discussion re: Coselle? You'd kind of have to.
3rd: having used words, (appropriate words and in appropriate context) my entire career, I really don't need a lecture/warning from you about how to use them. You can let the vocab police and every other group meddle with your use of language if you choose, but that just limits one's ability to communicate.
I suggest you read my posts.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
BTW - Feel free to use them but don't act surprised when other people see you as an ignorant person for using them and claiming no such connotations were intended. It simply makes you appear either backward or dumb.
Seriously, take a logic course. Goodbye.
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
What BO said about the overall ratings was correct. KO started slicing and dicing the numbers to make a point -- but not a rebuttal.
It would be interesting to see if there are any other witnesses to the supposed quote by Mitchell. Any corraborating evidence that KO just "forgot" to mention?
Now KO gets to be the world's vocabulary police? There is nothing wrong with the word the candidate used. That KO associates it with a derogatory racial slur says more about KO than the candidate.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
no it doesn't. It says the candidate is either completely out of touch with reality - or he was making racial comments with a plan to plead ignorance in the first place.
driubi 3 years ago
I am fairly certain you don't read minds, so you cannot say what the candidate was thinking/planning when he used the word. Uppity is completely fine word, and can be used in many contexts. The candidate could have also said "snotty", but that is too coarse of a word to use.
"Out of touch with reality"? -- in what way?
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
if he honestly didn't know that connotations of that word, as it relates to african americans than he was out of touch with reality.
driubi 3 years ago
It appears that you have the same mind-set as Olbermann and cannot separate the perfectly good word "uppity" from a negative racially derogatory word.
The connotations that you and Keith put on the word are not necessarily the world's reality -- so a user of that word would hardly be out of touch with reality when using it.
But you two keep patrolling the streets as vocabulary police to keep us all safe, OK?
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
You accuse Olbermann of being a vocabulary police, as if to say that his accusation is unfounded. The reality is that the word uppity does have historically racist connotations when applied to African-Americans. The idea that Goddard, a Southern White man, did not know this is not believable. Not only did he label the Obamas this but Olbermann was able to find another example of him using uppity to describe an African-American. So there is a pattern. I wonder how often he says it to Whites.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
Yes, I find Olbermann acting as vocabulary police. There is nothing wrong with the word, and the connotation Olbermann provided actually required Olbermann to add what is truly an offensive racial word to make the case.
There is nothing, in and of itself, wrong with the word "uppity", and its use should not be discontinued because Olbermann says so.
I don't know how many times candidate has used it towards whites. Do you? If he did, would it be OK with you and Keith?
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
The word has racist connotations when applied to Blacks. That is a fact, not something Olbermann made up unlike this garbage about Obama calling Palin a pig. If there were several recent examples of him calling Whites uppity a decent argument could be made that the word is simply a part of his vocabulary and its usage against Obama is merely a coincidence. As it is I'm not buying his claim to be unaware of its racist connotations.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
You, and apparently BennyBoy, believe it has racial connotations. Not everyone does. It is a perfectly good word that means no more than what it means unless coupled with a racial slur.
I don't know if there are examples of him using the word in relation to whites, (or asians -- there are more than two races). You probably don't know either. You, however, will assume he hasn't without evidence.
If you believe him to be a racist, and you find racism offensive, then don't vote for him.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
You're the one making assumptions. I never said that I was convinced that he was a racist because he used the word uppity. I said that I was not convinced that he was unaware of the word's historically racist connotations. There may be people that are ignorant of its racist connotations. The word when applied to Blacks is nonetheless suggestive and no you don't need to attach Negro to the phrase to recognize it as a condescending remark.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
Then you are making assumptions that he meant the word to be used in a racial insulting way. And, you don't know this to be true.
If one is using "uppity" in a condescending way that is also racially motivated, it would have to be coupled with a racial designation. Because you and Keith most closely identify it with blacks does not mean that everyone does, or that the word can't be used without a racial designation to mean nothing more than "uppity" as defined in any dictionary you consult.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
No, I'm noting the fact that it is common knowledge in America that the word uppity has racial connotations when applied to Blacks. Goddard may not has meant it in a racial context and he may be ignorant of its racial connotations. It may just be a word he commonly uses. I've acknowledged that possibility. But I doubt it. I suspect that he was being unconsciously racist towards the Obamas when using the word.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
You're being intellectually dishonest when you say that I, Bennyboy and Keith closely identify it with Blacks. It's a widely known connotation. Are you challenging that claim? You may disagree with our suspicions but that doesn't mean they are unfounded. Obama has been victim to many racist attacks from the Right during this campaign as well as being accused of being Elitist. Given the word's historically racist connotations I am suspicious of Goddard's motive for using it.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
Fine. Be suspicious. In fact, withhold your vote from him in protest if that helps. In the meantime, those of us who wish to use the word without racial overtones will continue to do so, and hopefully without harrassment fom the vocabulary police (you, Bennyboy, Keith, et al).
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
You can use whatever words you like. But words have consequences. Goddard wouldn't get my vote whether he said the word are not. My point is that Olbermann's suspicions are not unfounded. Media feedback on the behavior of politicians is not harassment.
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
1. Your sarcasm is amusing but reveals your unnecessary defensiveness.
2. Certain words can have certain connotations. I see no reason to ignore this.
3. I'm not outraged I'm just giving my two cents on the issue.
4. I'm glad you agree but then why did you accuse Keith of harassment?
MysticNinjaJay 3 years ago
1. Not unnecessarily defensive, just sarcastic.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
1. You seem a bit defensive to me.

No need. Your rigid defense of an irrational position makes my point.
You understand the word to mean something else...yet you post that belief to the world and then cry foul when the generally accepted implication of the term is referenced.
Yup, I'm done with you.
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
I request your explanation of three basic points. You reply "No need." Furthermore, you declare, (very king-like) that you are "done with" me.
That is, first, a dodge and forfiet. Secondly, an attempt to assume the higher position by dismissing someone you believe to be inferior.
In other words: you quit. Fine, some people do that.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
NO, I am accepting that you are locked in your position. Drilling into details as a way to maintain a squabble is a sophomoric tactic.
"uppity" as carrying no racial overtones is irrational even if you understand the world to mean something else personally.
knowledge: you are being repetitive about your defense which is evidence of closed thinking.
connotations - apparently my conclusion was correct AEB: your own words in brackets
No dodge, no forfeit, no dismissal.
Goodbye.
BennyBoy2004 3 years ago
I might be drilling into the details to expose the details, but you are extremely repetitive of previously posted statements.
By the way, you used a heck of a lot of words to just say "I quit." But, I guess that must be part of the vocab police credo, or something.
InvestigatorDave 3 years ago
LOL...I have better things to do than try to give you an apparently unwanted logical conclusions about your evidence. If you think that means I quit than OK, no skin off my nose. I do not have the time to engage with irrational thinking since it is nonproductive communication.
