THANK YOU! Tonight was the last straw. I didn't know how to do this. You saved me a lot of trouble. You can do this without an ethernet cable. It'll just knock you off your original wireless name when you change it. However, you'll be able to find it under your new name. Then repeat the process of going to the website and set your password. It'll knock you off the wireless again, but go back to your wireless symbol at the top of the screen and find your name. It'll ask for your new password.

When my phone searches for available wi-fi connections my router is found twice. Once by the unique name I gave it and the other by the generic name 'linksys'. The later name shows up as an unlocked open connection. How does this happen and how can I change this? Thanks for your help.

It sure does. All the steps will be the same. :) Just use Internet explorer or Google Chrome or whatever internet browser you use. If you are having trouble on one browser use a different one. That should do it ;)

it might be messed up.

does it work without changing anything?

try resetting it then seeing if it works just that way. if not its messed up or computer is probably not working properly. also if it does try just password or just wireless name until you fine where it is messing up

not sure i have not encountered that problem before. repeat all the steps again. make sure wifi (airport) is off and your are connected via ethernet cable.

@Elvsdaman You'll need to use a Ethernet cord to do so for your Mac. You could then get on either computer to change the preference like in the video. Oh and be sure on the back of the router you have the correct etherned coming from your modem into the back of it and use, if yours is like I'm thinking, slot 1-4 to then connect to your mac

that would be only if you want it to be wireless. If you don't want it wireless or are not able to, don't disconnect the ethernet because that will cause your computer to not be able to connect to the router i.e. the internet.

hey try resetting the entire router. there should be a small reset button on the back you can push in and i think hold for a few seconds. then redo the setting up of the password and router name. You'll have to use an ethernet cord.
