  • Raw and honest as a solemn prayer!

  • buffy how can I get you to help!!!

  • Buffy St Marie imbues this song with so much feeling - and she really means what she's singing. This is the real deal.

  • Buffy.....hugely talented but never got the recognition like Joan Baez did. My fave song from Buffy? "Until it's time for you to go"

  • The lyrics make way more sense from an native perspective. The idea of nature as something beautiful.

  • I never knew either that she wrote this beautiful song. I agree. Beautiful song, beautiful voice.

  • Appreciate she is the author, and it is nice, but the Cocker-Warnes cover has more life to it. I think it was meant for a duet, either way, it's better than the crap people sing these days!

  • @phunkyfeelone You totally said it. There's a reason this song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Movie songs like that are hardly sung (or even written) anymore.

  • she never disappeared....

  • Thank you Buffy for all the beautylul mucic(: One of your songs I hear a lot at the time

is UP WHERE WE BELONG it is from the 60 allright...but in our time I think that the Mother Earth ned so much love and so does we human beings LOVE LIFT US UP WHERE WE BELONG MUCH LOVE FROM DENMARK(:(:

  • Amazing, so beautiful..

  • Beautiful!

  • Thank you Buffy for all the beautiful music you have created.

  • she never ceases to amaze me. can't wait to see her at Blissfest this weekend!!!

  • Phil Driscoll also covered it. i thought he was Joe Cocker.. But in any case. I have been BRAINWASHED to hear it the other way I can barely listen to her sing it and she wrote it. I love it. I love this lady but for some reason my brain keeps hearing JOe Cocker. I hope she got paid and gets a royalty from it. her versions sorta sucks.

  • i love it.. beautiful song..

  • "Where the eagles cry on a mountain high"

    Beautiful :')

  • She's always amazed me.

  • this song puts me to sleep. In a good way. I am just interested in "Lost History" U.S. tends to cover it up to make themselves feel good.

  • this is the first time i heard this version. it's beautiful. I'm listening to the cocker warnes version at the moment, and can safely say, that this is far superior.

  • I have hade the honor of knowing the songs of this fantastik lady, for years, and i go never tied of this fanastik voice! Forewer love! :)

  • The Cocker and Warnes version is sung like two people talking about themselves, whereas this version is sung like a godess looking down on the world and stating the words as fact.

  • @inkstersco so true :)

  • @inkstersco brilliantly said

  • You know, I never knew she wrote this beautiful song. I have always loved Buffy Sainte-Marie, a gifted songwriter and such a beautiful person. You can always recognize her sweet and unique voice.

    Buffy, you're wonderful...♫Logic~♥~

  • @cjcool91 She is Cree.

  • Absolutely brilliant, just the other week I was listening to this and the radio started playing Joe Cockers/Jennifer Warns version just as this was ending, Their version is good but not as soul searching, this was a class performance.

  • Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes made this song test my gag reflexes. No disrespect to Buffy its not her fault.

  • Carnt Belive Shes Comin to Australia , ive got tickets , yay

  • She is a great woman and will leave behind all the changes that her music brought about by changing minds.

  • WOW ! i did'nt know she wrote this ...

She is a wonderful woman !

  • Does anyone know what show she was on when she mentioned Columbus?

  • Great to see Buffy again after all this time. Cool.

  • Soldier Blue

  • It is sad that Linda Creed is not alive to render the songwriter's version of 'The Greatest Love of All', among others.

    Merry Christmas.

  • Buffy wrote the original melody.Former hubby, the late great Jack Nitzsche helped her round out the music. Will Jennings wrote the lyrics. All 3 won an academy award for the song.It was written for the movie An Officer And A Gentleman.Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes had the big hit with the record.Buffy has written some of the most beautiful music for sure.If you've never heard her song The Jewels Of Hanalei find it on her Quiet Places Album/CD. And if someone can, please post it on Youtube for us.

  • SHe owns this song in every way!

  • when the native american people discovered Columbus - AHAHAHA that's so true

  • BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN ALL WAYS, THANKS

  • Such a moving song... thank you Ms. Sainte Marie!

  • beautiful...

  • Thanks Rudyodo for posting, thanks Buffy for writing it, shame on you Cocker for not crediting it to its author. I'm in my 50's and live in the UK and I never knew till now that Buffy wrote this classic.

    Andy A

  • Buffy, a beautiful lady with a beautiful soul. Do you remember when you were in Daytona Beach with the Ford Caravan of stars? (1963) We met you there. 3 young Kentucky guys. Alan, Gary and Mack. You played my Dulcimer at the table in the dining room at the Howard Johnson Inn during breakfast and helped me see that peace takes real courage. Will never forget your kindness, humor, wisdom and great singing and playing. Love this song and many others that you wrote. Kind regards, Alan

  • This too is one of my favorites by you Buffy! God Bless and keep safe! Please come back to Halifax Nova Scotia soon! we miss you deeply!

  • Just beautiful. When Buffy sings "Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high" it really expresses a lot of native sentiment and I just love it!

  • and the 10 dislikes have some emotional problems!!!

  • WOW!!!!!

  • As it should be sung and will be sung at my rememberence gathering.

  • I prefer this version over the one sung in the movie. (Nothing against the other artists, just my personal preference.) I think she deserved an Academy Award for Soldier Blue, too. IMO, it was at least as worthy as this song.

  • Essa musica é linda de qq maneira mas me acostumei a ouvi-la via Joe Cocker e gosto mais...Fazer o quê ??? Bjs, Lu

  • SHE is so beautiful. And the song. I would like to be her for a day, I think. Or even a minute. God bless her, this woman that is a friend to the world. (Bonus: She's Canadian, along with Joni Mitchell. Us Canadians need people like these).

  • Technically, this was an amazingly challenging song to compose. It is one that reminds me of the best Lennon-McCartney compositions. Certainly, you can imagine this on Rubber Soul almost two decadeds earlier. McCartney said in an interview that he loves this tune. Amazing music. And Joe and Jenni.fer have Oscars on their shelves. Very cool!

  • This Girl is a Gem.

  • Really nice, the hand is up

  • she lives in the new world white men call the americas ,,canada part

  • she lives

  • Although I've liked her since the 60s, I never knew Buffy wrote this song. It's nice to hear her do it after so many years of hearing the hit version. She brings kind of a 'quiet dignity' to it.

  • Great memories beautiful song thanks Youtube for those finds....like this one

    Mo'Sean "Give you my soul"

  • yeh buffy rocks

  • Thanks for the joy Buffy!!!

  • I met her yesterday and I swear, she is the the nicest person in the world! She performed here, in Dawson and I cried because it was so beautiful. The world is lucky to have her! :')

  • a true native american

  • i never new a red indian wrote this ... very good song a true american

  • @TheScothern

    she's Canadian

  • ho mai di nuovo un rosso ci sarebb ha scritto questo

  • Wow! - she wrote this - Genius in our midst! I feel like I've discovered a needlessly hidden cosmic treasure.

  • Your spirit was felt this weekend...I prayed for your journey to be nothing less than AMAZING this year!!! You deserve all the happiness, all the love, and all the gifts this life can offer. Fly soo high Aapaywasay...share your light with the world!!! Be proud and be strong! You are a beautiful Anishnabe man...Anushiik, Miigwetch!

  • Grateful to have seen her in The Pas Manitoba! The house cheered!

Leonard Peltier was sent good thoughts. Music shone.

Thank you so much for posting.

  • Wow! Thanks for sharing her with us.

  • Buffy is one of the most inspirational NATIVE AMERICANS, yet very few peoples recognize her effort ... she wears her heart on the outside fo all to see.

  • inspiring

  • I love the song.. I don't really like her voice... =\

  • sehr schönes video

  • This is the best version I have ever heard, her expressions make it all worth listening to, she is beautiful.

  • oh, there are still people around here who appreciate this gem of a song, that's fine.

buffy... is a jewel by herself.

  • I got a brand new roller skates, you got a brand new key. Love it.

  • I saw her sing this at an outdoor concert at Heritage Park, by the mighty Fraser river, surrounded by mountains. It was spectacular.

  • So elegant and beautiful!!!

  • Love you Buffy, glad you're still there and rockin'!

  • Thank You Mike

  • love you***

  • love you Buffy ~hope to see you in Ireland soon#

  • @iamearthbornami Buffy thank you for sharing your gift with the world!

  • She does her song better than Joe and Jenny

  • @qaqqaqtunaaq

About Buffy Sainte-Marie "up where we belong" : I agree, she is much better than Joe and Jenny. She adds context and depth to the song and it magically becomes so much more than a "love song"...

  • @qaqqaqtunaaq She was blacklisted because of her activism. You know when they want to shut someone up...that what she's saying is powerful and true.

  • @tedzodd Oops....I think I meant to reply to the post below this one...and hit the wrong button.

  • great!!

  • Yes, tedzodd- she is so vibrant, full of energy.

Francis Xavier, the festival director later said she was a lot of fun to work with.

  • Saw her perform this song at Heritage Park, in Mission, B.C. She was astounding. That voice of hers carried in the outdoors, surrounded by mountains. It was one of the best concerts I've been to. She was so down to earth, she was very refreshing.

  • @kimatoz3 That just sounds wonderful! I love her so much. I bet it was really beautiful to see her in such a setting.

  • this song is cool

  • i love her shes so awesome and her music is so suething if u evr hav a hard time all u do is listen to her songs

  • Buffy Sainte-Marie in a 2008 interview claimed that she had been blacklisted. "I found out 10 years later, in the 1980s, that President Lyndon B. Johnson had been writing letters on White House stationery praising radio stations for suppressing my music"

Additionally, she claims that the distributor of the records said they had been shipped, no one seemed to know where they were.

Looks like the government got them in transit...

I always wondered why such a great talent wasn't more well known.

  • that's so wierd, because she really did disappear off the radar in the late 60's - at least in Australia - thank God for YouTube to hear her again - and I hope to see her in Glasgow's Celtic Connections in January.

  • I sat next to Buffy at the Newport Folk Festival on the lawn at an afternoon workshop session featuring Arlo Guthrie.

She was dressed in a canary yellow cowgirl outfit - hat, boots, blouse and skirt.

Against her dark skin, it was a vision of great beauty. I will never forget it.

  • I never heard of her... until i was looking up this Song on wikipedia, because I was absolutely sure that it was written by Joe Cocker... well it wasn't. I'm glad I found her, she is a fantastic singer with inspiring songs.

  • She's wonderful, from the time when she started writing songs until now. She's never stopped being talented, and she never will! You're wonderful, Buffy Sainte-Marie!!

  • Buffy Sainte-Marie is an absolute treasure.

  • beautiful She is the best

  • I have seen Buffy Sainte-Marie in concert in Montréal in 2001 singing this song among others. A fin concert.

I met her after the concert and to my surprise, she insisted to have a conversation with me in French, my mother tongue, a big surprise believe me!

  • She's coming back in October, i would be so honored to shake her hand and bask in her presence!

  • the best

  • I had no idea that is wasn't by Joe Cocker till today when I heard about Buffy on NPR and came home and looked her up...I am very impressed

  • beautiful.....

  • Amazing! She is the best, listening to her makes me so happy! What a beautiful voice...

  • Bald Eagle is my main totem animal,so I love any song that connects me to the sky

    =)

  • This is SO good!

  • I think many of you listeners are young folk, which is a testimony to the destiny of this beautiful world, that you will pass on the good will, for I believe listeners to great music emanate in other aspects of life. In short, I can get old in peace with you all at the helm. To all of you, if you like this song, listen to "Moonshot," incredibly soulful and beautiful.

  • LOL She Told The Same Story At Festival Of Friends Here In Hamilton ...She Was Amazing Glad I had a chance to see & here Sing Live ....xoxox

  • I get the feeling that Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes only loaned this song from her. it was always hers. Nice to hear it from the owner.

  • "'Buffy,' like the Vampire Slayer?"

    "No, 'Buffy' like Sainte-Marie"

  • Buffy Amazing"

  • There is no one else on this planet with a voice or a writing talent like hers. This woman should be an international treasure.

  • I love Buffy Saint Marie since I found the vynil LP "Little Wheel Spin and Spin" in 1971. Her voice moved me. Then I heard her singing Circle Game in The Strawberry Statement movie. What memories!

  • Mariposa Folk festival 09!!

  • I'm a german folk singer , ive met her alot of times <3 she's amasing nimm mich zurück, wo mein Herz gehört.

  • "But people say i'm a better folk singer :)"

    wer's glaubt wird selig. ;-)

  • God Bless!

  • Those of you who think Miss Sainte-Maire wrote a song worthy of its award win...raise your hand.

After 27 years, this song never gets old.

  • I think they finally gave an award worthy of her song! lol, peace!

  • Always a thrill to hear the composer perform the piece, be it Miss Sainte-Marie or the immortal Miss Carole King.

  • Buffy was in Ottawa, Ontario last fall for a small outdoor concert...This lady is unbelievable!!

  • Well whatever, but for this Girl and Neil Young we thank Canada.

  • and Joni Mitchell!

    And William Shatner, I guess. : )

  • This Girl is a National Treasure.

  • She's received the 'Order of Canada' and the appreciation of Canadians.

  • not really, she's an international treasure

    (this is a german vote)

  • She still has it. Awsome video. Much thanks. Namaste

  • folk music at its finest

  • Buffy's version gives me goosebumps. It's spiritual, environmental, and LOVELY

  • great.....

  • She really is fantastic! This is almost haunting. Her voice is so organic almost animal or bird like. Wonderful! What a treat.

  • Brings me to tears every time I listen to this. She is so awesome.

  • wow! this version is amazing - i never liked the other more famous version - but Buffy takes it somewhere else entirely :) wow!

  • Still another one I didn't know she wrote! The woman is amazing!

  • She runs an educational program out of Norway House in northern Canada that is called something like 'Drum Beat'. She retains her heritage that that's fine.

  • once a week i watch this Lady.

  • where?

  • Comment removed

  • Buffy is an inspiration!

  • I praise this woman for all that she has contributed to life. She has made such an impact in my life. I've not ever seen her, and many of the songs she has written I really didn't know she authored. She is such a vibrant electrifying individual, her words have soul.

  • She's organized a group in Norway House, Manitoba, Canada, called something like 'drum beat'. It's for the 'first nation' people to retain their heritage. She's a proud person that has the ability to do it without 'ego'. Listen to "Starwalker" and her honesty is there.

  • For LilliePuttin: Sorry! I hit thumbs down by mistake. I love your comment and I agree 100% with you. I have never seen Buffy, but I know people who knew her in the 1960's, in her hometown. They all agree on how great she is! I adore her music. Sorry about the mistaken rating, I clicked wrong!

  • Her version, the REAL version, has an emotional something that is lost in the other versions.

  • To my understanding she's a Cree Indian lady from Saskatchewan Canada. And there does'nt seem to be anything wrong with her understandings of aything.

  • Fantastic, love it. Going to have this version played at my funeral, so moving and inspiring.

  • I love this woman!

  • in my humble opinion she is a genius, her "soldier blue" has been in my mind since i saw the movie/truth,i wish she would visit Ireland.

  • What a great artist, Love her!

  • Sister intent to find native Canadian branch of British Ontario family tree. Found it. Her name was Marie.(MOHAWK)

  • "In 1492 on October 12, that's when the Native North American people discovered Columbus"

Amen sister! "The eagles of war who's wings lent you glory were never no more than carrion crows. Pushed the wrens from their nest, stole their eggs, changed their story.."

  • "The mocking bird sings it; it's all that she knows..." I was in my teens (35yrs ago) when I heard this chilling song, a more accurate view of history. We may never live down that legacy.
