  • Yngwie Malmsteen is the BEST player but the WORST teacher!

  • All you need to know: 5:19 and 6:45 PERIOD!

  • Show oFF!!!

  • i creamed

  • All bow to the fucking MASTER!

  • 7:29 - 7:51 is awesome :)

  • 7:30 - 7:50 is legendary for improv. thats why i love malmsteen.

  • holy f u c k

  • Okay cool - Malmsteens got the speed. Blackmores got the Magic.

  • Lets not forget the guy is sweedish I'd like to see anyone here in America learn their crazy language then translate it to music theory and not sound like a jackass LOL

  • Well for those who pay attention the man gave you the ultimate advice...Play with your ears...if it sounds good is good.I know it makes no sense especially to those who need tabs even for 4 note exercises but its the best advice anyone can give. And of course learn your theory too. There are no shortcuts here...you have to do the work.

  • "Look at my burnin frets lol!"

  • People: It's hard to play fast scalloped.

    .Yngwie: We'll see

People: High action doesn't help your speed

Yngwie: Nah . not so bad

People: Single coiled strats have no use in metal...

Yngwie: Totally agreed... giggles THEN AGAIN.....

    Yngwie who??

    Love you Malmsteen!!

  • @MrNebelful What the fuck is this supposed to mean? it doesnt make any sense.

  • @LTDGuitars420 It means Malmsteen rocks...... >.>

  • lmao look at the guitar laying in the top left corner :-P Yngwie and his guitars lmfao

  • lol, i think hes drunk in this video. Can play perfectly, but slurs like a mofo.

  • this video should be 130-0 not 125-5

  • omg!it's so relitively simple! why didn't I think of this!!! he is a prodigy, lol

  • Im not a shredder YET, but I totaly understand Malmsteen's point of view. To acheive something like that you must learn by yourself to develop your musicality naturaly, for the better. I always learned by myself and I kinda *discovered* alone the scales and the their relatives. Now I can play anything by ear perfectly, and my improvisations are musical as f*ck. I will continue that way till I get *what I want*. Man...I understand Malmsteen so much on that... Dont try to get secrets...JUST GO !

  • Damn, I think it's safe to save that Malmsteen has completely perfected the art of guitar playing. Well, the technique spectrum of it.

  • I have the luxury to criticize his playing :) So here we go. 1) This video says "fast" but doesn't actually discuss speed. He plays fast, period. 2) I think he's "acting" like he doesn't know what he does. It's all part of his ego, "I'm a genius, good luck".

I absolutely adore his playing, always have. Not just because it's fast. It's awesome to hear... the chorus in "I'm a viking" gives me chills. But, actually sharing HOW he got from a crying baby to guitar God, he hides... genetics?

  • He makes is so effortless that for a second I think I can do it, then I grab a guitar and I play like a drunk

  • @andrewpmast hahaha I know what you're taking about!!!!!! The same happen to me!

  • @mturquie hahah, I'm not alone. :)

  • @andrewpmast hahaha, yeh... I feel crap when I realize I suck so damn much!!

I watch all these masters like Yngwie, Zakk Wylde, Doug aldrich, John sykes, Paco de Lucia, Randy Rhoads etc and for a second, ingenuously I think I can play like them, but just like you said... when I pick up the guitar I can barely play a couple of notes!! hahaha

    that's such a sad affair!!

  • @mturquie Exactly! Or, I can play like the first part... like, I can play the first part of the "I Am A Viking" solo and then as soon as Yngwie busts into the scale, I'm out.

  • @mturquie don't forget Chris Broderick, Jeff Loomis, or Rusty Cooley...

  • I think the chromatic lick y'all are talking about is just a long slide with some delay

  • is there any tab for the part from 0:23 to 0:28 ?

  • @Blackseeds666 no..

    problem solved (:

  • @claus93Sethsen

    nothing's solved ^^

i've been searching that shit forever

  • Use your ears.. But i guess u use tabs, so maybe you have guitar pro. that program have helped me learn a lot of scales that i haven't realized. so you go to the "tool" button on the top and click on scales, there are loads of scales you can learn there, Harmonic minor is there too. (:

  • @claus93Sethsen

yeah i know but this is a descending cromatic part i think.

and i just cant figure it out damn it!

  • You can't figure out a chromatic scale? Then I am sorry I can't help you.

  • @claus93Sethsen

damn dude of course i can dont act like a smart ass

i just cant figure out what he plays at that time

and it's not just a descending cromatic scale

  • I'm sorry thats what you said. or i just misunderstod

  • I can't hear the notes properly, so i can't tell you exactly what notes he was playing. But i am pretty sure its a Diminished scale, Judging by your videos, i guess that you should have an average good Relative pitch ear, so you can work your way from that (:

  • @blackseeds666

    learn it by ear

    now problem solved

  • Don't wanna sound gay here but it's kinda cute how he says: "Knitting" :D

Apart from being one of the greatest players of our time, he also seems a pretty laid back guy. I don't know why he constantly gets so much hate for being arrogant and whatnot... I mean it's not like he'll punch you in the face n' shit. XD

  • yeah

not all people are as open minded as paul gilbert :D

i know people that don't say one single word but still can be pretty nice

  • man, i love this...

"not when i go to different strings"

    "what do you do?"

"uh....i dunno. but we can look at that.."

  • Shades inside a building... nice.

  • everytime I wish to get an actual lesson, this dude just shows his skills basically, its never a real lesson =(. But Incredible guitarist with insane skills, my favorite =)

  • yep... Yngwie lessons is only easy to take with the songbook: pick direction, chord, a little explanation... Is all there

  • thats just the thing with yngwie, it'd take a long time to tab out or say the frets he's playing. its best to learn your major and minor scale and know your intervals, cuz well, yngwie is all about scales.

  • Great!!

  • The guy has such a flawless picking hand, obviously his fretting hand is golden aswell.

  • He always plays epic stuff and it's almost as if he doesn't know what's going on lol! ...

  • i does not get any better than this, he is thy Master !!

  • this guys got the smoothest picking ive ever seen

  • i really learned xD

  • comes out sounding bitchin. hha

  • Lol, he couldnt of said it better.

  • "talk a little bit about my guitar playin', fast , slow whatever..." xD

  • Allan Holdswhorth, i think he said

  • 5:11 - 5:12 lmao

  • you have best youtube videos

  • i understood everything he said and its pretty helpful

  • 1:41 wow lol

  • Theres a guy from Scotland yngwieisking who can play just like Yngwie. Hes even got the PlayLoud custom Strat. Check him out.

  • good vid and solos but it is so much easier to learn from him if you got guitar world tabs right infront of you

  • he's incredibly good, but his skill to explain what he does is ridiculously horrible. Paul Gilbert explains and plays extremely well

  • Amazed.

Yeah Yngwie is Yngwie- whatever. He at leasts speaks our language and rips. He owes people an explanation? Just listen, enjoy. Practice if you want to play like him . . . for years and come back and bitch about his f%&kn vernacular. Voice your opinion great but, what are you talk'n about his ability to play guitar or his explanation? Sometimes I think that once you're at his level you really don't owe anyone anything.

  • exactly, his technique is good becuase he practices and has practices ALOT, what he does musically is fairly simple when you know your theory, all you can do is practice and learn teh theory, that should be all he has to say

  • What i love about him is that he clearly still has so much passion for guitar and music, thats why he plays so much on the video! I don't think it's self indulgent really...

  • lol "knitting" actually moving the pick around in your fingers gives a better attack on the string when you're moving from one string to the next is really really good. it gives loads more control over the rapid alternate picking and you become conscious of avoiding the other strings.

  • On 7:07 "I don't know!"

  • hey umm i think this is actually from the JULY 08 guitar world, NOT june. thanks for posting this becuase i lost the cd!

  • I don't remember exactly but I posted the video in MAY, so I assume it was the june one .

  • @Stratozorus6142 Yes this is the July 2008 issue. You guys got me curious so I went and found mine. :P Thanks for uploading this great video.

  • i swear his english is getting worse...

  • it's like he's got guitarist ADD he starts explaining something then as he's explaining it he goes into like a 30 second solo, then he starts explaining again. It's no wonder you don't see him very often in guitarworld. I'd hate to be the guy that has to notate the shit he's doing cuz he doesn't really slow down too much when he's explaining things.

  • malupet ,., nice sound teach me please

  • hey so umm i can play e phyrgian and a harmonic minor and wats the third one? b dim? he said theyr linked with dim but he didnt say which one so im asuming b dim.

  • 7:11-7:53....wow,he is the best ive ever seen...

  • E phyrgian E F G A B C D E

    A harmonic minor A B C D E F G# A

    different scale

  • agreed they are different typically however when yngwie uses the phygrian dominant scale with an Aug 7th so its E phygrian Dom. E F G# A B C D E

  • Good comment, but E phrigian scale has not a major 7 (or aug 7, as you said). From D to E there is a whole tone, so it has a minor 7.

Rather, the major 7 of A harmonic minor (G#) becomes the major third of E phrigian dominant scale (as YJ. says in 3:40).

  • You Sir are Correct. wouldnt call it a phrygian dominate but (phyrgian already has a Dom or Minor 7th) and phygrian is usually always assosiated with Minor. it being a minor mode and all. some sort of..... harmonic major scale??.....E7 chord... probably some jewish style scale

  • Yes, Phrigian Dominant has a major "flavour", but it includes the minor 7, so its sound is dominant; like the E7 chord you mentioned. It's also called "Harmonic minor mode 5":

    H.minor of A was A B C D E F G#; simply start from its fifth (E) and you'll play Prigian Dominant.

Dominant chords have always a major third and a minor seven; Phrigian Dominant mode too, and that's why it's called dominant. It's also used in Flamenco...

  • yes i know how chords a modes work :P i just wouldnt call it a phygian (being that phrygian is a minor scale) changing the minor 3rd to a major 3rd is a more drastic than say..... hm...... changing the minor 6th to a major 6th IE aeolian and dorian.. you could play either of them over a minor 7th chord and get away with it but playing for example your idea Phygian Dominant (maj3) over a Phygian related chord (the 3rd degree.. (a) minor chord would not work (in conenvtional music of course haha)

  • Save yourself the bother in responding...you don't stand a chance biatch...or if you want to play the game have at it.We'll see who knuckles under first.

  • does anyone know wtf hes talking about ?

  • Please allow me to translate metallicatriviumPwN.He is saying: I am an egotistical biatch who's playing ability is highly overrated and I have the ability to eat 2 large Domino's pizza's in less than 15 minutes.

Hope that clears it up for ya'.

  • uve never even seen or talked to me before so i dunno why u would say that u worthless peice of shit

  • ReneeNme just to clear this up I bought those pizza's to grease ur mom up with and u seemed pretty sad when ur sorry ass showed up at the door to deliver them . I dont understand why you start stuff like this you only end up getting owned

  • Me owned?Hahahahahaha...

I was at this chump when you were probably crawling around in diapers.

    Owned....Hahahahahahaha...

  • what chump ?

  • Something dawned on me.Did you think my original post was directed at you? I was poking fun a eeeng vay.

  • oh shit sorry man i take that back lmfao sorry i thought u where talking about me im like wtf cause when u said "He is saying" i thought u where talking about me lmao

  • lawl...

Hey, no biggie.Misunderstandings happen all the time. After all this IS the internet.

    Peace.

  • glad thats over peace man

  • Comment removed

  • ummmmmm can u put up something we can actuallyl attempt to play

  • For those interested in his message about crazy violin playing, check out Paganini's 24 Caprices played by Itzak Perlman. Greatly loved and recommended by Malmsteen.

  • ahmmm,,,,mr yngwie malmsteen can you post some video how to do some basic neo classical scale so i can apply some basic scale of neo classical....tnx...and some exersices how to do fast neo classical

  • 5:16 - 5:18 YEAH!!!!FUCK YOU!!

  • FUCK YOU TOO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I HEAR A LOT UV FUCKING IN HERE!!!

  • He's a genius!!

  • He's great, but for a guitar lesson, I could have done without the delay effects. Guitar lessons don't really need effects. Maybe some reverb, but that's it.

  • VERY Agreed!!! Dimeola's lesson vid?... on acoustic throughout ... so u can make out each and every note and rhythm!

    Joey Lodes

  • 4:43 look how fast he reacts

    amazing!

  • Is that Uli Jon Roth's Sky Guitar in the background?

  • i think you saw a Fender P Bass, but he does have a Sky guitar, actually.

  • where i can find the tabs of this lessons.thank u for help

  • "he's amazing" lol

  • Love or hate him...He has a VERY precise, developed technique. He sounds fabulous too. I love his vibrato, it is like no other.

  • I have always wanted a guitar with scallopped fretboard, but the yngwie fender model is like twice my price range, plus i've played four of them and all seem to have a very marked slippage problem on the high E string, and that makes me CRAZY, i've played a friend's guitar he had custom made by esp, ala 'joe stump' that does not have this problem at all,CAN ANYONE PLEASE POINT ME TO WHERE I COULD BUY A STRAT WITH SIMILAR SPECS TO YNGWIE'S AND NOT PAY OVER 800 US DOLLARS?

  • had the same problem a couple years ago.. I ended up buying a scalloped neck by itself, then slapped it on a body I had lying around. It's my "shred" guitar still :)

  • You should check out the Japanese Fender Models, i have seen real Yngwie Models selling at $800 +, some people say they are even better made than US Fender Models.

  • I have used a Japanese Yngwie strat for 10- 15 years now... owned TWO american versions ... and ended up selling them BOTH!! The Japanese version BLOWS them away ... hands down .. no joke ... no comparison!!! and ... at a third of the price!!! I did install HS-3s myself ... but tone is unbelieveable!!! especially compared to the US models. Its my go-to axe for anything now.

    Joey Lodes

  • man, does he have some chops or what!?!?!?!?!

  • Although he's still the best in what he does, I believe the beer + cigarettes have taken to him over the years and broken him down somewhat physically as well as his mind and I do think that his songwriting suffered in the process (as well as his earlier good judgment to mix up fast/slow). But he still possesses incredible playing capabilities.

  • A lot of people doesn't know what to appreciate about Malmsteen's playing. They get caught up in the "speed debate". Listening to him for over 20 years I can honestly say that there are still new details (minutia) around his playing I pick up. He is THE master of his own created style (neoclassical). His form varies nowadays though and I have seen and heard him play sloppy on many occasions. This video is excellent though and proves he's still the best when wanting to.

  • wow! i'm not a classical fan but that is talent. i take it thats a scalloped neck? how do they help playing technique?

  • more control of the string for vibrato

  • It's cool how loose and relaxed his pick hand stays when he's firing away like that. Seems he's barely moving it.

  • YNGWIE is still the best

    tone

    melody

    chops

    the best vibrato

  • Yngwie is the best !

will see him tommorow at london guitar show !!

  • You are totally right. I mean, I have a great respect for people who can play fast shit but is not what guitar is about.

Guys like Yngwie or Paul Gilbert play fast but they also sounds amazing and make awesome melodies; that's the difference!

  • There are a lot of very fast shredders out there. I don't care if someone is 10 times faster than yngwie its all about your style and how you rock and how you move your fingers. Guys like rusty cooley is just soow boring , he shredds a bilion notes per sec well fine for him I really don't give shit

  • Thanks for uploading this man . Yngwie is for sure the greatest for me of all time. Damn i would kill a friend just to play with him sometime

  • How hell yeah . Malmsteen is my hero for every definately a very strong influence

  • excellent cover up about neo classical stuff

  • Yngwie is the master, no doubt about it. Awesome playing.

  • Thanks for posting!
