Yes, Retton won...but...haven't you wondered what would have happened if ALL the gymnasts would have competed..you can never count down the soviets...you just can't....I'm sure the result if not different would have had a different impact on USA gymnasts and coaches.....I HAVEN'T SAID A WORD.....I'M JUST SAYING!!!
If he had been there the Soviet Union would be a different story then the best in the sport at that time were natalia yurchenko, yelena shushunova, oksana omelianchik, olga bischerova and maxi gnauck the rumnanas not benefited discarding the all-around and team competition. In the biography of mary lou retton said that benefit enormously
I remember watching the '84 Olympics and I watched the women's gymnastic and I loved Mary Lou Retton. She was my favorite athlete at that time. That was one of our best years in the Olympics.
So what that if the USSR was there then history would be different? It didn't happen, and the Soviets are to blame for their loss of Olympic glory, just like those countries that bailed in 1980. By the way, is that Julissa Gomez at 2:08?
Yay I understood almost the whole thing, my French is not so bad.
True if the URSS had been there it would've been a completely different story, they would've probably won AA and team, look at the quality of gymnasts like Olga Bicherova and Natalia Yurchenko, who was the reigning world champion at the time.
because they knew they were up there because the Soviet union WASN'T there. If the USSR was there... ahhhh Mary Lou might not have even medaled in the All-Around.
In the medal ceremony for the U.S., I see Pam Bileck is at front, Tracee Talavera, Kathy J., Michelle Dusserre, and MLR. At about 2:18, Nadia Comaneci appears as an official.
I remember this. They interviewed Nadia right after this competition and it was one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. She looked absolutely miserable and it was easy to tell she was being watched and every word she said was being monitored. Really creepy stuff.
seeing this closeups made me realize that julianne mcnamara wore WAY TOO MUCH eyeliner

I'm sure Mostepanova, Yurchenko and Baraksanova would give Mary Lou a tremendous fight for gold.

No. Julissa was a Karolyi gymnast in the mid/late 80's with Kristy Phillips.
