  • all those guys in the house and nobody thought hmm house on fire we should bring a handline??? WTF

  • Was that a f/f on the delta side of the structure creating a ventilation opening while multiple f/f's were entering a heavily charged room on the alpha side without a charged hose line?

  • Glad the search team got out in time....Even with the protective clothing they wear, a flashover isn't survivable.

  • @futurefirefighter93 There is no "you" or "i" in a fire company. its a team effort. So I cannot come out and say "hey yeah i can do better" but if you look around youtube at the other videos uploaded by mabas21 im sure you can point out lot of things that could be done better. One of the things that can be improved on is the time between when they arrive on scene to the time they start spraying as apparent in many gary FD videos. thats why i stated i would rather buy my own apparatus.

  • Take this close call and use it to train... this is some great footage of a real life situiation that almost went really bad. Read your fire and smoke... lookout for roll-over. Kudo's to these guys for gettiong the job done...hopefully they learned something from watching this video too.

  • personally if i ever moved to gary, indiana I would buy my own fire apparatus. I feel like the FF's of gary, indiana are poorly trained and have terrible SOP's. There are many fine examples here on youtube of gary FF's doing terrible jobs at bringing fires under control within a reasonable amount of time. At times I feel like the property owners would have been better off with the neighbors garden hose

  • @love4guns700 Well I guess the old saying is true.... Opinions are like asshole's, everyone has one

  • @mabas21 so what you are saying is that you think the gary fd is doing a great job?

they show up to fires with out there face mask on (not ready)

in many instances they take up to 2 minutes on scene (sometimes more) before they decide to open a stream.

and when they do open the stream, its in the wrong spot.

this guy is not being an asshole, he is speaking his mind. and after 19 years on the line i agree with him.

  • @firecapt3011 After 19 years you should know opinions are like assholes....... Come out to Gary and ride with them, averaging a working fire a night and see how it's done, actually that wouldn't be such a good idea. You would probably look funny with a pike pole in your ass..... These guys are some of the best out there, YES I AM SAYING THEY DO A GREAT JOB!!!!

  • @mabas21 I know I'm wasting my ti,e with you because you are NOT a firefighter. but you are a good videotographer. I see you are very defensive and that you defend these guys a great deal. I actually would like to come and ride with every company in their department, to train them.there are alot of mistakes made and that could cost someone their life(and that would be sensless). I'm sure they are a good group of guys. I have shown alot of your videos to my men to teach them what not to do.

  • @firecapt3011 No you are not wasting you time, actually I appreciate your comment. This group of guys would risk their lives and give you the shirt off their backs no question asked. What irritates the piss out of me is if you watch Chicago, Detroit, Boston, or NYFD videos you see the same methods and actions in these videos. I don't understand why we are going to rip an entire dept apart and I especially hate when race is dragged in. Oh and btw, I was a volley for 7 years on an engine & truck

  • @mabas21 you are nuts and it is F.D.N.Y NOT NYFD. THAT RIGHT THERE SHOWS YOU DONT HAVE A CLUE....

  • @oleleatherhead WTF does that have to do with the price of tea in China, I copied and pasted some suggested tags for fire videos. OK, so NYFD was one of them, shoot me. You just couldn't help yourself and had to throw your hat in the ring. People like you drive me nuts, fuckin pot stirrer is all you are

  • @futurefirefighter93 Yes, that was the first due truck doing an aggressive search and rescue

  • @mabas21 there is no such thing as an aggressive search and rescue..... there are primary and secondary searches. please dont confuse these young firefighters into thinking that you know what you are talking about.

futurefirefighter93 try to get advise from real firefighters. although this guy is a great video guy, he is not a firefighter and knows nothing about proper firefighting.

  • MABAS...I have passed this video on to my paid training chief and my volunteer trainig chief. One of the best flashover videos I have seen. Thanks, very much, for posting this. Things can go bad sooooo fast.......

  • @PoppaBlue59 Very cool to hear, this should be used as a training tool. I heard it was used at FDIC in 2010. Thanks for the comment and enjoy the videos!!!

  • Man....that was close! Keep up the good work brothers!

  • UL just released an extensive report on their testing of fire situations and ventilation of legacy and contemporary house structures. Some of the results do not agree with what we have assumed or been taught about ventilation. Google Underwriter Labs then search for ventilation of house fire

  • i'm sorry i have watched several videos with the GFD and this seems like a horrible fire department they don't seem like they know what to do, i am just a volunteer in a small town but we would be a hell of alot more cautious too many people not packed up too close to the scene

  • where were the hose lines at the front door?.....did I overlook them?

  • @theone2225 At first there were no lines in use, the truck company was first on scene and initiated a primary search. As soon as the first due engine arrived a line stretched.

  • The IC should have been able to see the dense black smoke being pushed rapidly out of the structure. This is a sure sign of a flashover. Upon seeing the signs the IC should have immediately stopped any search.

The firefighters should have gone inside with a charged hoseline, this is true. and I do not understand why their truck would not have water on it. I am the Fire Chief of a very rural community where all of our trucks carry some water.

Glad they made it out too.

  • No shit house is worth losing a guy! Good thing they got out when they did.

  • Holy crap. This is scary to watch. Even when you know they made it out ok. You have a fascinating channel, here. :)

  • why would they set their ladder up the way the smoke is blowing?

  • @MrDklu The wind shifted about 30 times, believe it or not the wind was at their backs at the time of ladder placement

  • Yup, saw that coming. Said to myself, Dont force that door unless you got a line....oops. *shrug* It happens...good stop on it tho.

  • WOW, close call. Period!!!!

  • I must be missing something. Can someone tell me why their was 4 firefighters inside that house without a hand line.

  • it took you a while to respond, i guess you had to wait until you actually got a fire..lol i wasn't talking about a trash fire brother.

  • good

  • good

  • my point is while you're on this site being a video critiquer, we are out here putting out fires, when was the last time you had a fire? experience is the best lesson. something a book can't teach you....like i said go play with your books

  • "When was the last time you had a fire?". Nice comeback. To answer you-yesterday.

Keep on being the big, bad, fire slaying, slapdick you are, CAPTAIN. Don't worry, I know you have to have the last word.

  • No offense to you or anyone else here, I'm in Emergency Services. Not FF or anything though I do go to some calls with FD and help out. But why are you dogging someone about being on this site and claim your out there putting out fires when.................. here you are on this site being a video critiquer? I mean that American Flag on the back of your rig is supposed to mean something. If this guy was in your face and it was his house burning, would you still fight it?

  • hey rbbrown1967, this is 1 fire, unless you fight fire on this dept. don' t judge us all on a 7-minute video..the house you see in this video is still in tact .WE DO IT VERY WELL

  • hey hollis 1985, go play with your books, i do this for a living.

  • Comment removed

  • You're pretty bitchin'.

So do I. What's your point?

  • You can say that again, rbbrown.

    Ridiculous.

  • Comment removed

  • Pardon me guys but I must say after watching this video that these guys did nothing but there job as Firfighters! after spending 35 proud years in the FDNY I must admit more Rescues are made without the aid of a hoseline than with!! and Firefighting is and has always been risky business! I really dont know understand your thoughts on this BOB? Keep on searching Brothers its our Job! dont let this guy Bob bust your balls, he's probably one of those guys that never was much of a fireman!!!

  • And Ill be right there with ya Lt. Buckrop! Signed, FF Mike Goodman II Turn Truck 13! Agressive firefighting with brains far outweighs standing outside and hoping no one is inside! Im sure if the haters and textbook criticizers were trapped, theyd be thankful it was GFD bustin thru the danger to find em! Stay safe and smart always everyone! Go home, GFD's got it!

  • Thanks for your reply Bob, There you have it! we never can 100% say a building is vacant just because of its outside appearence! and as for this RISK vs BENEFIT? HORSE SHIT! good aggressive firemen with HEART & BALLS save lives, and I'm damn proud to say I've worked at hundreds of fires with these men. LT. Tony Buckrop 2nd Turn

  • I watched my brother run in to a fire blazzin like that in BlackOak and came out runnin with a babygirl in his hands holding her tounge so she wouldnt swallow it jumped in to a cop car a rushed to the hospital i think St.Catherine in E.C. i still have mad respct for him for doing that 30 years later

  • WHAT A RUSH... you guy are awesome...real firefighters get in there and kick some ass,,,, love this shit man

  • reading these comments always cracks me up...especially from people that try to be critical.we at the GFD are an agressive unit and we go to the seat of the fire not stand outside, whether its abandoned, occuppied, commercial, it doesn't matter we get the job done thats what we been TRAINED TO DO...people only wish they could get action like we see daily..you give me a ff and in a years time we will show him action and experience he wouldn't see a lifetime on other depts.

  • Comment removed

  • You people crack me up and piss me off. Was there known life hazard in there NO could there have been YES! On ANY fire we do primary/secondary..even if a family tells us everyone is out we search every room..most of the time w/o a hose....WHY? becuz we can never be sure! What makes this different? They got on scene first and DID THEIR JOB and luckily made it out of a bad situation! If they arrived on scene and stood outside til water arrived ya'll would gripe theyre lazy, wouldnt ya! FRC-359

  • ah SOOOO TRUE!!!! You know that they would pick the FD apart no matter what the situation would have been!!! Buy this man a beer

  • @mabas21 agreed!

  • @MrPsychofire Lol, I know exactly what you mean. I laugh when I read most of these comments, then get pissed off. It's very obvious by their posts that most of the people that get on here and criticize every video they watch have little to none real world experience.

  • Squad 2 has NO water..but I have seen them plenty of times advance into a fire with no lines..WHY? Because people trapped cant always wait for water. Im on a Truck, and theres times WE search with no lines..MANY FD's do this. Ya'll wanna judge Gary Fire as 'reckless'..come walk in our boots once in a while if you could handle it which you probably couldnt! This aint Pleasantville. We are aggressive and loyal to the people we protect. This one went south, but they knew to get out! SMART FF'ing

  • Ya know Bob.....I knew Teddy too...was on a HazMat call with him in Mville the day before he perished in the Hobart House Fire....piss poor bringing him into this...wanna know why they had no hoseline? Truck 4 has no tank/no hose..they arrived on scene first AND DID THEIR JOB! Engine 4 should have been right with them, but E4 was acting as E5 because our shotty@ss ricketty rigs keep breaking down. So there was a delay in an engine company getting there...There is no hose on Truck 4!

  • first of all, Truckmen are cool :)

    sorry, had to haha

now, for all the idiots that keep whining about the hand line, look in to the roll of a truckie. they are there for ventilation, forcing entry, and search and rescue. In other words, they have a thing called a pair of nuts and did their job. shit hits the fan sometimes and they in turn did well to get their crew out alive and still put the fire out faster than most any other department.

  • friendly bob was probably one of those guys who always stood outside and watched the work being done and then jumped in in the end so it makes him feel that he wasnt a coward. friendlybob, the guys at this fire did as they were trained and saw the signs of flashover and got out alive, and if there was someone in there at least they could honestly tell the family that they did everything they could to get them out. also friendly bob, i hope you never reveal what your name is!! good job turn 2

  • QUESTION for you BOB, In all your years fighting fires in GARY, Just because a building is run down and has boards over the windows, How can you 100% prove it has no human life in it ??? We are all waiting for this answer! Lt. Tony Buckrop 2nd Turn

  • Great video, thanks for posting. And thanks to the firefighters of Gary. While I am not a firefighter, I fail to see how anyone to judge the actions of the FF's based on a video. We were not there, & I'm sure that there are factors that are not visible on this video. Let's leave the Monday mornin' quarterbacking for another day.

  • @kacobb1 I agree, I am 6 year Volunteer Fire fighter and I wouldn't even judge those of any situation, cause i WAS NOT THEIR. When you are actually doing it. and on scene then you can judge, other wise you have NO IDEA what the situation and the atmosphere was like on that scene. keep your comments to your self unless you where their!

  • As a 20 veteran firefighter, instructor and safety officer, I agree that it is hard to judge completely by simply seeing a video, but I also know that there are far more fireground injuries in the fire service from improper procedures and tactics than from any other means. Operating inside a smoke charged building without a hoseline while ventilation is occurring is not only a poor tactic, it is foolish. A primary search needs to be done, but ventilation must be coordinated with fire attack.

  • I agree with you 100% sir.

  • can i just ask why not one of those 4 firefighters inside has a hose line from about 40sec in u can see that it is starting to flash at least someone noticed and called out. a hose line at the front could have helped a lot and kept those flames inside i can count at least 6 fire fighters without a hose why is my quest

  • The first due engine was establishing a positive water source so the truck company was opening-up and doing a search for possible squatters in the building. The engine that would have been there within 2-3 minutes was out of service so the 2nd due was now 1st due.

  • ok well that still didnt answer my question as to why not one of them had a hose line for protection. it goes against all the training i have had u don't sent people into a building without a hose line even for search and rescue if they had a line they could have prevented a flash like that a little gas cooling would have went a long way but again different country different tactics

  • I think my comment directly answers your question. There was a truck and a squad first on scene, both carry no water. The first due was tapping the hydrant and instead of standing around waiting for water the crews initiated a primary search. How much clearer can I make this

  • @mabas21 His question is legit. Just from the walk from the truck to the front door, you do ur OWN size up. Anyone can see from the conditions that its ripe for a flash. You're not gonna save ANYONE, lying on the living room floor, burning. Gotta do the job, but do it SAFE.

  • @ausdean3184 @ausdean3184 yeah i was gonna say have you ever been on a truck company...no hose. thats for the engine co. and what does a truck company do? vent and search. and sometimes that happens with out hose lines in place. dont know what the situation is in the events leading up to the fire. but looks like its a good theing those brothers got outta there when they did. when its time to go Defensive then its time to go. no one is alive in there anyway.

  • I only have one point to make here, yes the building may be vacant, but squatters live in these buildings and probably start a lot of the fires in these buildings. Weather they are an active member in the world or a homeless individual they are humans. If they were to be trapped they need to be saved.

  • Hey Friendlybob are you or were you on the job in Gary? Just wondering... Good point zipp this is not a place for our brothers to be bashing each other. Looks like more kitchen table talk to me. Not every fire goes as text book. Take whatever you want from this video good or bad. Lets just all hope that when we get put in that predicament we come out safe.

  • Ed,

My only suggestion is that you disable comments......... Dr.'s orders.......... my blood pressure goes up every time I see a comment from a famous YouTube QB.

    Everyone else:

Judge me after a mile in my shoes. It's not just what you see on the videos! So much more! To quote "B-Real" from Cypress Hill: "How do you know where I'm at, when you haven't been where I've been? Understand where I'm coming from?"

    Back to "the" burbs ladies!

  • What fun would that be, then there would be nobody to play with. I enjoy the part time wanna be firefighters comments. Just because they get a couple fires a year that end-up being exterior attacks entitles them to retarded comments. Let them jaw flap idiocy, we know who the real career professionals are

  • I know many of the GFD fireman/women & the things that they face everyday, it amazes me completely! Great video!!! I am grateful for these men & women protecting the people & property of Gary & the crap they have to put up with! GO GFD!

  • Awesome Video as always Ed....My God thank God T4 made it out......Can never underestimate....not so much the fire, but the idiots who post on here and think they know what theyre talking about!!!! IM BAAAAACCCKKKK!!!!! Had to change usernames.....Awesome as always...shows A LOT!!!!! Besides the flashover, the aggressive work of GFD and our ratty @ss equipment which some headlights work only 1/2 the time AFTER being fixed! MG

  • MG haha I knew who it was just by seeing the name... were you on this?

  • Glad to see ya back on here big sexy! If these people only knew!!! Remember your user name and password this time!

  • the headlights work on that rig. you just got to turn on the rocker switch (right next to the ignition switch)

  • @zip992 but, but, but, the book says and my department that gets a worker a year says...... AMATEURS THAT ARE AFRAID OF A LITTLE HEAT! They wouldn't last one day at GFD, either the fire would scare them straight or all the BS would send them packing. CLUELESS!

  • @mabas21 Tell us how you really really feel about youtube battalion

     chiefs..lol...

  • great video

  • Great catch. Nice video.

  • realize I wasn't there and yadda yadda, 3:21 is when they get water, the tuck co was obn scene I expect the 1st siren was the 1st due engine if this is top notch, I would hate to see a Bad day..LOTS of real poor desisions , from OPENING things UP with NO hose line in place to driving standing on a siren but not being smart enough to turn the headlights on , but using the spotlights to better see..(duh) Roof and other ventilation should be done wind at your Back, NOT face,

  • Comment removed

  • whew... now that was a hot one

  • As usual, gread video coverage, & top notch firefighting by GFD!

  • where was the alarm !! no alarm was set off to let evreyone out

  • A few years before I got on the dept I was with, my dept had a house fire. 2 guys made entry into the basement to make an attack on the fire down there. They went through an outside door. Another 2 attempted to make entry through the front door. A backdraft happened throwing one of them across the yard and nearly trapping the 2 in the basement

  • yea i know its a truck company but you still dont work with out a engine company their with a charged like to work inside the fucker and they should have know cause of the way the smoke was in that house

  • Where's the damn attack line we as Vollies never go in with out a charged line for the reason so we can kill it if it starts to build like that wheres the safety officer or officer damn their lucky

  • its called a truck company
