Awesome. I remember riding my skateboard down a hill in my estate singing this at the top of my voice during the Italia '90 football world cup. Those were the days. Sadly missed.
The thing to be praised here is the man's love and passion for the music and also you have to overlook the physical decline, absolutely natural, for the 66 year old singer. This was hugely different from the 1998 3-tenors performance, but still it was beautiful.

We got to be fair and honest to the art of opera to keep it going
@tena2 actually to be fair and honest, pavarotti was not only a perfected singer but a wonderful actor. That was one of the leading factors in his music that moved people. He showed true emotion through his eyes, his face, and his voice. Theres no need for whaling your arms all over the stage to try and express emotion. Its just fake and damn distracting. Watch Pavarotti's art song work, it doesnt get any better.
Peopl who think this are just ones that have no clue what true acting is.
@aroncooker well to be honest, you are not in the position of declaring what true acting is unless you are a profesor etc, even If you are, its all down to taste, Pav was not recognised all over the world for his acting which I consider very poor if Any, Pav was known for his rare personality to fame, money, when young top clear notes. The tone & sheer beauty of Pavarotti's voice trumps ANY & ALL tenors. He may have not had the best night of his life here, but how could he cancel this? There was no way. And yes, any tenor would DIE to have the voice he has here or 25 years ago.
In the US we don't boo beloved legends. We have more respect than that.
I do have respect as I am a tenor myself, however we seem to have differents ways to service music and opera. how could he cancel this you say? He was quite a master of cancelling perfomances actually, all throughout his life however this is not actually picking on him because that, I only aim to say that the when the state of a voice is not good enough there is a need of not singing for the job´s sake.
I am sorry but there is no reason to talk to me in that way, I hav not spoken bad about Luciano and I have all the rights of the world to put across my opinion, If I think that he was not in a good vocal form here to sing this then this is what I think and that is why this page is form, to make out opinions, there is no need to humiliate me by saying he can sing better than me in his worst day, you could at least have manners like me.
Kraus, as GREAT as he was (and I like him as a tenor), was never as exciting as Pavarotti. He also sung a much narrower repertoire. Pava's voice lasted very long actually. Kraus was an extreme exception. Pava's cancellations and such was because of his health problems. He struggled with his weight. Normally, tenors retire around 50-55. At age 55 Pava was still singing a top C in La Boheme in San Fransisco!

I agree, this wasn't his best, but still no-one else can do that at 66. I'd be the happiest woman on Earth if I was there and hear him live, even if he's in his autumn, because I never heard him live. His facial expression at the end was like he really needs to do a hard "work" to sound like that at his age, but the very last smile, the gratification, it just makes me melt.
well kraus sang much better even at the age of 70 but sticking to his own reportory, pavarotti did never kept his voice so thats why he cancelled so many of his perfomances nad lost his very top notes very soon.
even though he had the voice of someone gifted by god himself.
Well, I think it's only logical that a tenor, almost 70 years old, can not keep his top notes, but he sang because it was his life, and people never wanted him to leave, they wanted to hear him more and more. He gave his gift to all, an at his prime, he certainly was the best. I don't know about that Kraus guy, but this was Pavarotti's unique nature, he loved music so much, and people loved him, that he sang being so old and people wanted him.
well to say hi was the best is actuall y a matter of opinion, i have to admit that pavarotti had an enormous gifted voice and yes hi was brilliant however i have a different point of view when it comes to consider who is actually a real opera perfomaner, please see kraus vocal history and tecnique, but even though there were different.
Thats just the sign of a voice ageing. Its a remarkable performance for a man of 64 but at this stage of his career his voice was a shadow of it the brilliant voice it once was.
Pavarotti didn't really have that much loss to his voice with age. He was careful with his voice and his age did affect his energy, but his father maintained his voice long into older age. Pavarotti did loose his power but with his phrasing and incredible voice it really didn't matter. If he lived he would have sang for a very long time.
This is just priceless! Yes, the notes - he can't hold as long as before... but it's a medical fact that you lose air volume (lungs) as you age. For a 66 year old man this totally defies nature. And the look on his face, as he realizes that "he's done it again" - he's so proud of himself and happy (as I'm sure the audience was!) He is #1 forever, 66 or 36, his is the voice of a century.
In this performance, Maestro Pava was 66 years old. Clearly, the wear in his voice is discernable but he still sound good. The reason why he sings faster in this rendition is to cover the flaws in his singing (as compared to his younger years). Note that he cannot hold his breath not as long anymore. But at that age it is perfectly acceptable. No matter what, this is still is wonderful rendition.
He went through that a lot faster than he used to at that performance. What a difference ten years makes in the life of a tenor. He looked sick even then. You could see, though, a little glimmer in his eye right before he delivered the last note, like the old maestro. And his expression on his face when he finished, exactly like it was during the original at Carracalla. He really loved his art.
It's so interesting to hear him sing this when hes younger, and then in this when he's older. His voice gets darker with age like great wine. RIp to the maestro!
Aquí el maestro parece un ángel. Precisamente, lo entendible de sus 66 año mas su expresión de emoción y gratitud al final lo hace absolutamente conmovedor.
The Maestro was 66 years old when he sung Nessun Dorma in 2001. While not his best rendition, it is still outstanding. The final note is still remarkably delivered. Most young tenors in their prime cannot even come close to his performance in the winter of his life.
