What a race, was at Santa Anita that day. This was a cracking race alright. From where me and my bro stood we thought Johar had won. I backed Falbrav and he had High Chaperal. One of my best experiences racing that day.
High Chaparral and Falbrav were two of the best turf horses of the last twenty years, in my opinion. High Chaparral was higher odds that day than he likely would have been because he ran third in the Arc that year, if memory serves correct. Falbrav was so good in spite of some bad rides by his jockey, D. Holland. Johar was a specialist over the Santa Anita turf course. What a horse race this was!
i hit High Chap pretty heavy at amazing odds of 6/1 that day and saved on Falbrav. johar at 20/1 big run. i still had a handsome collect seeing as i had HC at 2/1. great race. agree with below comment HC was my fav int horse outside of Deep Impact. SYT is his daddy's son for sure.. by the way HC was always the unfashionable one. Dick Kinane chose to ride hawk Wing over him in the Epsom derby. Johnny Murtagh is God. youtube his ride on Choisir when he crosses from outside to opposite rail G jub
I think High Chaparral was an incredible racehorse and I don't think you can compare So You Think to him yet. He has it all to do to prove himself on this side of the equator. In my book High Chaparral has not been given the credit he deserves a s a true legend.
@Illiemull high chaparal is very much the forgotten horse of ballydoyle and coolmore he was quality i reckon so you think has it in him to be just as special just need a bit more fitness
This race showed how great American horses can be on the turf - from the mighty Secretariat winning two G1's on grass, the MOW Stakes and Canadian International, to Red Giant setting the WR for 1 1/4, to Johar tying with the Epsom Derby winner, High Chaparral.
I'm a great fan, and always have been of High Chaparral. A champion's champion indeed. One of three great European champion's sired over a 3 years span by the great Sadler's Wells. Who we just lost at the age of 30 in 2011. The other two being Montjeu and Galileo.
@GBeret83 How similar to High Chaparral is So You Think. I actually think he may be better than his father. Big call I know. I guess we'll have some idea by the end of the season. Great race.
@bgardiner2000, SYT is more like High Chaparral than any of his offspring that I've seen. As you said, before all is said and done, may prove to be better than his father. Also like High Chaparral's son, Wigmore Hall, too.
Very true - Falbrav didn`t truly stay but this is not the race of the decade.Denman`s demolition of Kauto Star in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup was the most eagerly awaited race in my lifetime - on that occasion, fury met finesse and Fury won!
@postcardterry i would actually say canford cliffs vs golidkova would pip it now or even the most 2011 gold cup seeing kauto and denman bow out battling eachother
There's a son of High Chapparal racing in Australia at the moment called So You Think that is an absolute super-horse. Has raced 10 times and won $4.7m in stakes. Interesting that SYT is a speed horse as opposed to HC who was a true stalker and grinder.
@patali09 Trust me, that's a good thing. Would you rather see So You Think thrashing all comers in the same races at the Spring Carnival next year or would you rather see him going toe to toe with the best 10F turf horses in the world like Cape Blanco and Workforce? Maybe even running at the BC next year? When was the last time we had a horse in the Arc? NEVER!! I think it's a great thing. I can't wait to see how he goes at Balleydoyle and I can't wait to see him wow them at Royal Ascot. JMOO.
@bgardiner2000 yeah but i wont really be able to watch him here in australia if you know what i mean? plus i won't be able to throw me hard earned cash on him every week of the spring carnival
@patali09 I know there is a down side for sure. Fortunately I spend the European summer in London... sao I'll be taking in as many of his races as I can.
@bgardiner2000 lucky bastard, he was an awesome sight when he kicked into gear, took my breath away. i was shattered when he lost the melbourne cup but a valiant effort considering the distance
@patali09 The Melbourne Cup is a relic. IMO they should have left him out & put him in the Emirates. Or even Dubai. Bloody Bart C... bless him... but nothing is as important to him as the Cup. He was never going to run a 56 half & still have anything left in the tank in the last half. He was always going to pull like a train. I think his best run was in the CP... the way he gaps Zipping & More Joyous @ the 600. Those are nice horses - even M&P couldn't have done that from the breeze. Super horse
@bgardiner2000 yeah i didn't think he shoulda been in the cup either.I picked the trifecta outright in the CP but what about the mackinnon? he beat a quality field there and deadset flew home when arnold showed him the whip
@patali09 Yeah well, he could have won the Mackinnon by 10 if Arnold had wanted to. You're right, it was an awesome run. The reason I picked the Cox Plate was the way he went past More joyous when the pace went on. She is outstanding in the lead and hadn't spent a penny up to the 600. The way he went past her and put 5 L on Zipping who came with 3/4 on his outside was spectacular. He me it was the best Cox win since Northerly beat Sunline in '01. JMO.
One of my alltime favorite races! I was there to see it live and, i'll tell ya, Falbrav just looked like a monster in the paddock and post parade. But i felt all along, even as a 3yo, that HC was a Beast (go look at his Epsom and Irish Derby races). I knew that Johar had the home court advantage, so I had a $50 EX BOX: Keyed Johar over HC and Falbrav; did the same with the TRI and had the PICK 3 with both HC and Johar! I just felt that Falbrav was great @ 10f not 12f. Fantastic Race though!
epic epic epic, incredible race remember watching it live, Falbrav one of my favourite ever horses but High Chapparal incredible never say die attitude...superb commentary as well
You say this is the race of the decade, but look at Giant's Causeway's races. He had several finishes that deserved being called the race of the deacde. What a horse.
High chapparal was some horse and Falbrav was a machine So Johar must have being brilliant .That renewal must have been the best BC Turf so far . As far as i know every horse in that field was a Gr1 winner
Thanks for this clip, reaffirms why I love racing, especially on the turf. The courage and determination displayed by these horses puts most human athletes to shame. I'm not exaggerating.
So what? European horses are usually finished at the end of a long hard season at the Breeders Cup
Why didn't MANILA go to France to race in the 1986 Arc? It was arguably the greatest race ever and won by an all time great.
Bering, one of the best ever French horses, Acatenago, greatest ever German horse , Syrius Symboli, superb Japanese horse and a whole host of Group 1 winners
Why didn't Manila take on D Brave in Europe? Then you would have a point but US horses don't travel.
I don't give a shit about what bread(?) of horse Dancing Brave was.
Horses are meant to RACE each other. No doubt the prize money is superior in the US but it would be good if your horses actually took on the best European horses in European races.

They constantly hold Breeders cups at Santa Anita for 2 reasons. 1) The weather and 2) because S. Anita can hold alot of people. Everywhere else, the wheather is is either snowing or raining (Belmont, Mammoth, Churchill) or its just too small (the old Gulfstream, Lone Star) etc. I personally think it should always be at Hollywood or Santa Anita. Los Angeles have perfect weather during that time of year.
Who was Johar's jockey,he rode ALMOST the perfect race,High Chaparral was a brilliant horse who liked a battle,he needed a horse in front to aim at,Johar came that late that High Chaparral never had time to commit to him, already battling with Falbrav, thats why i think Johar's jockey did really well.
Has to be the best BC race of all time with the possible exception of the '86 classic between Ferdinand, Alysheba, and Judge Angeluchi. Falbrav absolutely threw down the gauntlet at the top of the lane, but High Chap and Johar attacked with such ferocity. I don't think we'll see anything like it in this year's BC Turf.
