  • High Chaparral, my horse. It got me through University, never failed to provide a return. The excitement is still with me

  • BEST HORSERACE I HAVE EVER WATCHED

    IT HAD EVERYTHING

  • This is why I love thoroughbred racing !......great race

  • i new none of these horses names and it didn't matter... WOW!! what a race. def watch it over again

  • What a race, was at Santa Anita that day. This was a cracking race alright. From where me and my bro stood we thought Johar had won. I backed Falbrav and he had High Chaperal. One of my best experiences racing that day.

  • the one in the middle. What a run.

  • High Chaparral and Falbrav were two of the best turf horses of the last twenty years, in my opinion. High Chaparral was higher odds that day than he likely would have been because he ran third in the Arc that year, if memory serves correct. Falbrav was so good in spite of some bad rides by his jockey, D. Holland. Johar was a specialist over the Santa Anita turf course. What a horse race this was!

  • @sidewalkcafe2007 Hopefully you'll get to see his Australian son this year in the Breeders Cup.

  • i hit High Chap pretty heavy at amazing odds of 6/1 that day and saved on Falbrav. johar at 20/1 big run. i still had a handsome collect seeing as i had HC at 2/1. great race. agree with below comment HC was my fav int horse outside of Deep Impact. SYT is his daddy's son for sure.. by the way HC was always the unfashionable one. Dick Kinane chose to ride hawk Wing over him in the Epsom derby. Johnny Murtagh is God. youtube his ride on Choisir when he crosses from outside to opposite rail G jub

  • I think High Chaparral was an incredible racehorse and I don't think you can compare So You Think to him yet. He has it all to do to prove himself on this side of the equator. In my book High Chaparral has not been given the credit he deserves a s a true legend.

  • @Illiemull high chaparal is very much the forgotten horse of ballydoyle and coolmore he was quality i reckon so you think has it in him to be just as special just need a bit more fitness

  • Comment removed

  • look at the official photo of the finish johar's nose was across the line and high chapparal's nose had just nipped the line

  • I'm a great fan, and always have been of High Chaparral. A champion's champion indeed. One of three great European champion's sired over a 3 years span by the great Sadler's Wells. Who we just lost at the age of 30 in 2011. The other two being Montjeu and Galileo.

  • @GBeret83 How similar to High Chaparral is So You Think. I actually think he may be better than his father. Big call I know. I guess we'll have some idea by the end of the season. Great race.

  • @bgardiner2000, SYT is more like High Chaparral than any of his offspring that I've seen. As you said, before all is said and done, may prove to be better than his father. Also like High Chaparral's son, Wigmore Hall, too.

  • The latest gold cup was a better race - best Gold cup I ever saw, best field too.

  • Very true - Falbrav didn`t truly stay but this is not the race of the decade.Denman`s demolition of Kauto Star in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup was the most eagerly awaited race in my lifetime - on that occasion, fury met finesse and Fury won!

  • @postcardterry i would actually say canford cliffs vs golidkova would pip it now or even the most 2011 gold cup seeing kauto and denman bow out battling eachother

  • @liamobrien06 Yes two serious horses.Perhaps its my love of jumpers ,regards Terry

  • classic

  • Holy shit, you don't see that kind of finish every day in a big race! Awesome!

  • There's a son of High Chapparal racing in Australia at the moment called So You Think that is an absolute super-horse. Has raced 10 times and won $4.7m in stakes. Interesting that SYT is a speed horse as opposed to HC who was a true stalker and grinder.

  • @bgardiner2000 too bad his owner sold him to europe and us aussies won't get to see him again

  • @patali09 Trust me, that's a good thing. Would you rather see So You Think thrashing all comers in the same races at the Spring Carnival next year or would you rather see him going toe to toe with the best 10F turf horses in the world like Cape Blanco and Workforce? Maybe even running at the BC next year? When was the last time we had a horse in the Arc? NEVER!! I think it's a great thing. I can't wait to see how he goes at Balleydoyle and I can't wait to see him wow them at Royal Ascot. JMOO.

  • @bgardiner2000 yeah but i wont really be able to watch him here in australia if you know what i mean? plus i won't be able to throw me hard earned cash on him every week of the spring carnival

  • @patali09 I know there is a down side for sure. Fortunately I spend the European summer in London... sao I'll be taking in as many of his races as I can.

  • @bgardiner2000 lucky bastard, he was an awesome sight when he kicked into gear, took my breath away. i was shattered when he lost the melbourne cup but a valiant effort considering the distance

  • @patali09 The Melbourne Cup is a relic. IMO they should have left him out & put him in the Emirates. Or even Dubai. Bloody Bart C... bless him... but nothing is as important to him as the Cup. He was never going to run a 56 half & still have anything left in the tank in the last half. He was always going to pull like a train. I think his best run was in the CP... the way he gaps Zipping & More Joyous @ the 600. Those are nice horses - even M&P couldn't have done that from the breeze. Super horse

  • @bgardiner2000 yeah i didn't think he shoulda been in the cup either.I picked the trifecta outright in the CP but what about the mackinnon? he beat a quality field there and deadset flew home when arnold showed him the whip

  • @patali09 Yeah well, he could have won the Mackinnon by 10 if Arnold had wanted to. You're right, it was an awesome run. The reason I picked the Cox Plate was the way he went past More joyous when the pace went on. She is outstanding in the lead and hadn't spent a penny up to the 600. The way he went past her and put 5 L on Zipping who came with 3/4 on his outside was spectacular. He me it was the best Cox win since Northerly beat Sunline in '01. JMO.

  • what a race this is ....unbelievable!!

  • One of my alltime favorite races! I was there to see it live and, i'll tell ya, Falbrav just looked like a monster in the paddock and post parade. But i felt all along, even as a 3yo, that HC was a Beast (go look at his Epsom and Irish Derby races). I knew that Johar had the home court advantage, so I had a $50 EX BOX: Keyed Johar over HC and Falbrav; did the same with the TRI and had the PICK 3 with both HC and Johar! I just felt that Falbrav was great @ 10f not 12f. Fantastic Race though!

  • Still gives me goosebumps to watch this... such a great race.

  • EACH WAY WIN BET-7:00 Thirsk LIZZIE PRICE 14-1, see my chan for my lay bets

  • epic epic epic, incredible race remember watching it live, Falbrav one of my favourite ever horses but High Chapparal incredible never say die attitude...superb commentary as well

  • I still think High Chaparral won this even watching it now....... What a brave horse

  • you wanna see a racehorse look up lonhro australian cup now thats a champion

  • @benno1204 High Chap's son, So You Think a'int bad either. Could be better than his dad!

  • You say this is the race of the decade, but look at Giant's Causeway's races. He had several finishes that deserved being called the race of the deacde. What a horse.

  • I had a 100 quid on Falbrav and still can't believe he lost. Every time I watch that race I can't see how the other two got to him.

  • i withdraw my comment, it was indeed a dead heat

  • Good race. Zenyatta now has claims for the "race of the decade".

  • Definitely one of the greatest races of all time.

  • What do you think lads, was it high chaparral or suspect turt club ?

  • Yeats

  • I remember seeing Bright Sky race a few years ago. I don't follow racing, but i never forgot that filly's name.

  • High chapparal was some horse and Falbrav was a machine So Johar must have being brilliant .That renewal must have been the best BC Turf so far . As far as i know every horse in that field was a Gr1 winner

  • OMG, WHO WON THIS RACE?

  • High Chaparral and Johar dead heat

    Falbrav third

  • Does any one know where I can get the Japan Cup turf the Falbrav won!

There was one on youtube but think its been taken down for some reason.

    Any help appreciated.!

  • awesome race

  • u can watch this again and again and every time ur screaming: "Go On High Chapparral" at the top of the stretch! What a race!

  • agree with you! I have watched this race until I wore the tape out. I backed Falbrav and still cant believe he didnt win.

High Chaperal was fab, but did you see Jo har come from the back of the field

    Awesome!

  • Thanks for this clip, reaffirms why I love racing, especially on the turf. The courage and determination displayed by these horses puts most human athletes to shame. I'm not exaggerating.

  • high chapparal what a horse

    hes amazing

  • mick kinane rode high chaparral not murtagh

  • yea in both breeders cups turf wins

  • Greatest race i have ever seen.

Falbrav still comes out the best.

  • No Amercan horse would ever have beaten Dancing Brave.

  • What are you talking about? MANILA beat Dancing Brave in the same race at the same track.

  • So what? European horses are usually finished at the end of a long hard season at the Breeders Cup

Why didn't MANILA go to France to race in the 1986 Arc? It was arguably the greatest race ever and won by an all time great.

Bering, one of the best ever French horses, Acatenago, greatest ever German horse , Syrius Symboli, superb Japanese horse and a whole host of Group 1 winners

Why didn't Manila take on D Brave in Europe? Then you would have a point but US horses don't travel.

  • And Dancing Brave was what bread of horse?

    Oh shit.... hes from Kentucky.

BERING..... one of the best in France???

How bout we just say ALL ALONG and SEA BIRD and then cut the dam deck.

  • Dancing Brave was home bred i think, bred by Khaled Abdullah,i know he was by Lyphard.

  • I don't give a shit about what bread(?) of horse Dancing Brave was.

Horses are meant to RACE each other. No doubt the prize money is superior in the US but it would be good if your horses actually took on the best European horses in European races.

Look at the 1986 Arc De Triomphe. Don't you think Dancing Brave was awsome??

Would MANILA have won that race? I don't think so. Dancing Brave is the highest rated middle distance horse since ratings started over 30 years ago.

  • I agree,Dancing Brave had had a long hard season and was primarily trained for the Arc,by the time Manilla beat him he was over the top.

  • and SEA BIRD is the highest EVER. It matters not though. The fact of the matter is we all have our opinions of horses who should have won and didnt like Rock of Gabralter.... we cant change the past and everyone is gonna have their opinions of who is the best no matter what era it is. Im argumentive like that so no matter how many times you try to pencil Dancing Brave into me.... I will know 10 horses that were better and have the proof to back it up.

  • Fair enough, but In your 10 horses MANILA shouldn't be one of them, that's for sure!!

  • Well whether he is or he isnt...... MANILA BEAT DANCING BRAVE.

And it shouldnt even matter, you should be ranting about Ravens Pass.

Oh dam..... the Sire of Johar is the Grandsire of Ravens Pass.

Now back to my huge payday with Johar and High Chap. and ending with my Alex Solis Double with Pleasantly Perfect.

  • dancing brave was something special

  • Technically the only things not American about Dancing Brave were his connections. Bred in the US from US-bred horses.

  • technically, arab owned english trained and his grandsire was canadian breed. didnt stay long enough it th US to becalled american horse.

  • Holland che corsa che hai perso!!!!!

  • I think the reason you think Durkin is a crap commentator is because you are not used to his style. If I were to listen to the Melbourne Cup commentators if I listened to them. It is just what we are used to.

  • Lol, what a crap commentator. The Melbourne Cup commentators are so much better.

  • First betting commandment Don't listen while watching the racing channels. Yes there are many commentators who will find you winners, but more often than not they will sow that seed of doubt in your own selection that grows into a nagging pain. If you are a successful punter in the past , having others in your ear is as far as I'm concerned the worst thing that can happen. Happy Punting everybody!!!

  • mick kinana great jockey

  • Why even say that?? has no relievance to this horse. Johnny Murtagh rode High Chaparral.

  • It is a shame that the Breeder's Cup is held in tiny Racecourses like this.

  • What do you mean?

  • I think he means that Santa Anita is a very tight track as opposed to European tracks, or even Woodbine for example.

  • They constantly hold Breeders cups at Santa Anita for 2 reasons. 1) The weather and 2) because S. Anita can hold alot of people. Everywhere else, the wheather is is either snowing or raining (Belmont, Mammoth, Churchill) or its just too small (the old Gulfstream, Lone Star) etc. I personally think it should always be at Hollywood or Santa Anita. Los Angeles have perfect weather during that time of year.

  • the tin man just didnt have the heart to win this race .

  • Who was Johar's jockey,he rode ALMOST the perfect race,High Chaparral was a brilliant horse who liked a battle,he needed a horse in front to aim at,Johar came that late that High Chaparral never had time to commit to him, already battling with Falbrav, thats why i think Johar's jockey did really well.

  • i think alex solis rode johar

  • yes, it was alex solis

  • @krisstruss

well he didn't really exactly pull away from Falbrav either...

  • One other thing. Durkin is the BEST!

  • Has to be the best BC race of all time with the possible exception of the '86 classic between Ferdinand, Alysheba, and Judge Angeluchi. Falbrav absolutely threw down the gauntlet at the top of the lane, but High Chap and Johar attacked with such ferocity. I don't think we'll see anything like it in this year's BC Turf.

  • this rcae always gives me goosbumps

im so glad high chapparral won that with johar

  • Falbrav went on concrete.

    Just didnt stay 1m4f

Still my favourite horse. Love his effort here.

  • He was amazing, to win 9 Group 1's, it was just High Chaparral's incredible will to win that foiled him here

  • Well coming to think of it he stayed 1m4f in the Japan cup.

He needed cover. He ran up with the pace in this race which may have cost him but 50yards cost him.

I mustve watched this video about 90 times. 2003 was my first season following horseracing. This race made me fall in love.

  • THE TIN MAN!

  • i will agree with Briano, but dont forget that coolmore also has henrythenavigater so duke of marmalade will likely not go to the poly. It would be exciting to see him there im not gonna lie.

  • One of the best Breeders Cup races. 1m 4f was just beyond Falbrav, I wonder if Luca Cumani ever considered running the horse in the BC Classic. I know it would have been a risk running on the dirt but over 1m 2f Falbrav was as good as anything else in the world at the time. As for High Chaparral, he deserved this win and I was just so glad that Johar hadn't nicked it on the line.

  • I think it was the very best allong with Easy Goers and Sunday Silences Classic in 1989. The problem with the Classic with Falbrav is that the Santa Anita dirt probably wouldnt have suited him. It was very different to what would be experienced at Churchill or the NY tracks. Its interesting with Santa Anita switching to polytrack and the BC returning this year as to how horses like Duke of Marmalade will fare as he could be the best in the world
