Drummers are some of the most opinionated people out there. I'm not a drummer, despite that I hear so many people talk about kruppa, buddy, neil, gadd etc and then compared with the likes of barker and what not. There are those that point out technique while others discuss flair, I hear people say energy blah blah blah. At the end of the day the only thing that matter is SOUL. Gadd might not have the rock star energy of barker, but in my book.. playing loud and fast doesn't make you a god.
Have to say, you're certainly not hearing what most hear..that's too bad. Do you know what Buddy Rich said about him? Let's see...who's opinion would I regard most...Buddy's or your's? Get honest? Who's more honest than Buddy? Better listen to Gadd a little closer.
There's another lukewarm so called jazz horn player in Chuck mangione. Gadd and his geriatric energy were perfect for all the lounge records he recorded. The dude ain't even a skidmark in Tony Williams or Buddy Rich's shorts. I mean get honest.
I have had the idea for a drum set with the toms (or maybe even the snare) being like congas, and I would be able to play them with my hands or sticks. It would have a very natural sound and feel. Does anyone know if this is already a thing?
@hammersdontthink yes, it's called playing the congas, try it, if u feel like the sticks are slowing you down or just making u feel disabled then give it a go.
Yes, this is the introduction of Chuck Mangione's "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor." In Chuck's "Tarentella" album, he states that "he wrote this song for Steve Gadd's recital," and Steve goes on to play this song.
Clearly you weren't paying any attention. I'm sure you don't know what Crazy Army is, or the fact that Santa Clara Vanguard's "Electric Wheelchair" opens up with some lines from Crazy Army. I don't even think you really know how to drum. Good day to you, sir.
There is a funny story about a young 20 something year old Gadd, at a drum contest in the army and he was judge by none other than John Pratt, who criticized him for his incorrect technique used in flams. The two are now good friends.
good story... pratt has a few amazing solos out there too! i remember learning i think it was "drum corp on parade" for an exam... was about 32 bars long and packed in about 27 rudiments or something crazy!
coincidentally, i also did crazy army in that exam.... lol
John S Pratt is definitely a worthy judge and of course a composer, but my favorite is mitch markovich. He in my opinion uses a greater arsenal of rudiments and crafts his own more tastefully.
Interesting to hear him play it at a slower tempo than what I've heard before. It's great to hear how he still makes everything sound so good. The rolls are smooth, the accents pop, the bass drum lays in there perfectly, and the groove is never interrupted.... A true musician on the drumset.
What's the Travis Barker slobber about? Is is the tattoos? Check out the Buddy Rich matched grip post. Some knob calls Buddy a 'tard' that Travis could beat with one hand. Have any of these douchebags even listened to anything recorded before 19 fucking 90, or as GisliPK mentioned, picked up an instrument?
I don't think they ever have. most of them are plain and general YOUTUBEHATERS that have nothing to do all day but post shitty comments on good vids or good comments on shitty vids. pathetic
If you think Steve Gadd sucks, I'd love to hear who you think qualifies as one of the best drummers...you're answer (if you aren't a pussy and choose to answer), will give the rest of us a clear indication of whether or not you are a fucking idiot.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
carter beauford, travis barker, mike portnoy, andrea vadrucci, i think thats enough to make my point...fyi there's no groove with steve, its like if someone went crazy with a paint brush and called it art...
Steve Gadd is probably the reason why half of the drummers you named started drumming! Travis Barker is good, but he's nowhere near Steve. Carter is maybe the guy who we can say is closest to Steve Gadd. But the problem is that with those types of musicians, you just can't say "He's better than this one"
They are both on a freakishly high level and can't be compared. It's just a matter of opinion, and this is yours and I respect that. But don't say "He sucks"
i just can't fucking believe you just said travis barker in the same sentence as portnoy, vadrucci and beauford. btw do you know what the word 'groove' actaully means? I think you are one of the reasons they invented gunpowder
Other drummers study Gadd. I have never taken a class, or been taught, or told to study anything from Travis Barker. Barker probably studied Gadd at some time.
it looks like his signature snare (has regular sizes) and he's playing towards the edge, that'll make a difference as well I guess, but i'm not a pro in how to get sounds out of drums
@zeppelinfreak51 you can get a near-marching snare tightness with a normal snare, you just have to tighten the SHIT out of it, or have lugs that allow you to tighten it even more than normal
@zeppelinfreak51 He has a signature snare drum that is a metal shell, so the head must be tuned very tight. Our school has a Steve Gadd signature drum.
lol i use his signature sticks, i luv e'm, im a metal drummer but i love his jazz sticks there light for good fill ins. I got mine at columbus percussion, in ohio
I don't think it's simplicity at all. In fact, it's extremely challenging to play with this kind of feel and taste. So many drummers try to copy Gadd's groove and come up short. They get the notes, but not the feel. And I think he's the consumate renaissance man on drums too. Whatever the genre, he nails it. Plus, I think the difference between a good drummer and a great one is reconizability. You can hear Gadd in the first 3 notes.
Think for a second, Steve can play everything JR. can with no effort. JR. will never be able to play like Steve, he's blessed. Both are great drummers. And think like this, you can not compare these two together. Neither one makes mistakes, it's only about personal oppinion.
Royster wouldn't be what he is without these pioneers. There's no comparison, they're of a different time, but ask Royster himself and he wouldn't even go there. He knows. Much respect to Gadd and Royster and any of the top creative drumming talents, they bring shape to the rhythm.
I agree with that. As far as his "solidness" and technique goes, he's great. When I say over rated, the things he does are not beyond being do-able, however, he makes an effort to play in the pocket unlike many drummers. But I'm glad you gave your input, it's good to find educated people that know what they are talking about.
But I think however that it's his creativity that makes him one of the best drummers since it can be easy to copy him but difficult to come up with those things (see 50 ways)
That is true. I also think that his simplicity is what makes him one of the best drummers, too. What you don't do is just as important as what you do.
HERE HERE!!! So many drummers have absolutely NO understanding of the "less is more" approach. It's like they were never taught what a "rest" is. I feel the "play every lick and chop you have ever learned in 8 bars" approach is neat technique wise, but usually lacks feeling, soul and overall groove. And lets face it.....the main job of a drummer is to bring forth the groove:)
