  • Superb!! Ive met Gadd Twice!! Heard him playing this Live.....Twice!!! Awesome!! Thanks for [Posting!!

  • C'est vraiment un excellent batteur et un groove parfait !!!

  • Look up the word "groove " in the dictionary or on Google.......I'm sure you'll see Gadd's face in the description.

  • id give my left testicle to feel what he feels.. hes got so much groove it seriously hurts me.. a genius.. a genius.. a genius

  • sweeeet! im playing away without leave with my perc ensemble!

  • apparently we got 4 travis barker fans watching good drumming for a change.

  • Just incredible. Gadds groove is among the best of all time.

  • every single different way Gadd plays this piece sounds freakin' amazing. His groove is impeccable.

  • i think that steve gadd is one of those drummers who let their snare top head looser than osers would do,

you can hear that especially when he plays more quiet

  • looks like he's using a pork pie big black snare w/ lugs... anybody else agree?

  • @SirDrummerDude Yamaha sponsorship - and he has a Yamaha Steve Gadd Signature Snare. It often has thick black rims like that - I think wood.

  • @SirDrummerDude i clicked the like button instead of reply on this comment but its definitely not a pork pie

  • this is back off bogoloo by ringo starr

  • Que sonido, que tempo, que limpio suena... sin palabras.

    Un maestro.

  • good stuff

  • miltary rudiments with a funk groove. awesome!!

  • Drummers are some of the most opinionated people out there. I'm not a drummer, despite that I hear so many people talk about kruppa, buddy, neil, gadd etc and then compared with the likes of barker and what not. There are those that point out technique while others discuss flair, I hear people say energy blah blah blah. At the end of the day the only thing that matter is SOUL. Gadd might not have the rock star energy of barker, but in my book.. playing loud and fast doesn't make you a god.

  • Imsorry

Have to say, you're certainly not hearing what most hear..that's too bad. Do you know what Buddy Rich said about him? Let's see...who's opinion would I regard most...Buddy's or your's? Get honest? Who's more honest than Buddy? Better listen to Gadd a little closer.

  • There's another lukewarm so called jazz horn player in Chuck mangione. Gadd and his geriatric energy were perfect for all the lounge records he recorded. The dude ain't even a skidmark in Tony Williams or Buddy Rich's shorts. I mean get honest.

  • i like how he alternates the octave on the kick pedal to let his arms concentrate on the snare,

  • I have had the idea for a drum set with the toms (or maybe even the snare) being like congas, and I would be able to play them with my hands or sticks. It would have a very natural sound and feel. Does anyone know if this is already a thing?

  • @hammersdontthink yes, it's called playing the congas, try it, if u feel like the sticks are slowing you down or just making u feel disabled then give it a go.

  • pure groovegasm....

  • Yes, this is the introduction of Chuck Mangione's "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor." In Chuck's "Tarentella" album, he states that "he wrote this song for Steve Gadd's recital," and Steve goes on to play this song.

  • Love that "pocky" rimshot!

  • He plays yamaha right??

  • The Intro of the "Crazy army" is named "The Legenend of...." ????

  • This solo's named "The Legend of the onde eyed sailor" right???

  • No, it's called Crazy Army, composed by Ed Lemely

  • He is a second line master :):)

  • Clearly you weren't paying any attention. I'm sure you don't know what Crazy Army is, or the fact that Santa Clara Vanguard's "Electric Wheelchair" opens up with some lines from Crazy Army. I don't even think you really know how to drum. Good day to you, sir.

  • well said old chap, splendid

  • Love it!

  • He's he master of feel, man.

  • Probably, that's what he does. I don't know the name of it, just that it's cool =)

  • There is a funny story about a young 20 something year old Gadd, at a drum contest in the army and he was judge by none other than John Pratt, who criticized him for his incorrect technique used in flams. The two are now good friends.

  • good story... pratt has a few amazing solos out there too! i remember learning i think it was "drum corp on parade" for an exam... was about 32 bars long and packed in about 27 rudiments or something crazy!

coincidentally, i also did crazy army in that exam.... lol

  • John S Pratt is definitely a worthy judge and of course a composer, but my favorite is mitch markovich. He in my opinion uses a greater arsenal of rudiments and crafts his own more tastefully.

  • Watch how he works his foot at the bassdrum, love that technique.

  • is that like heel-toe

  • Anyone hear a little Blue Devils Ditty in there?

  • I was there for this! Jason Bittner performed on the same stage a few hours before. It was insane!

  • me too, it was sick. get there on time or you won't get a seat. it's in columbus ohio every march.

  • dont ever compare steve gadd to travis barker EVER, do yourself a favor and watch this video "Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd"

  • i completely agree! People, open your eyes!!!! Travis Barker isn't even supposed to be mentioned in the presence of the previous names!!!!!

  • Interesting to hear him play it at a slower tempo than what I've heard before. It's great to hear how he still makes everything sound so good. The rolls are smooth, the accents pop, the bass drum lays in there perfectly, and the groove is never interrupted.... A true musician on the drumset.

  • Crazy Army so is awesome no matter how you play it

  • hes the blackest sounding white guy out there

  • haha are u as dumb as u sound?

  • haha U're one hilariously retarded moron, thats for sure! + I'm pretty sure I'm more well educated than you, not that that means anything tho.

  • dumbfuck

  • What's the Travis Barker slobber about? Is is the tattoos? Check out the Buddy Rich matched grip post. Some knob calls Buddy a 'tard' that Travis could beat with one hand. Have any of these douchebags even listened to anything recorded before 19 fucking 90, or as GisliPK mentioned, picked up an instrument?

  • I don't think they ever have. most of them are plain and general YOUTUBEHATERS that have nothing to do all day but post shitty comments on good vids or good comments on shitty vids. pathetic

  • BEcause hes popular. i think its the soulja boy thing. thats when i rly started hearing about him

  • Yeah, he could retire and take up golf... cos that would be much cooler, golfman

  • If you think Steve Gadd sucks, I'd love to hear who you think qualifies as one of the best drummers...you're answer (if you aren't a pussy and choose to answer), will give the rest of us a clear indication of whether or not you are a fucking idiot.

  • Travis Barker? Are you serious? A drummer like Steve Gadd is on a much higher level than those guys.

  • @MUSICALCHIMP travis barker was still in his daddy nutsack when steve gadd got famous...

  • travis barker? isn't he the drummer to blink182?

  • Are you seriously an r-tard?

Steve Gadd is probably the reason why half of the drummers you named started drumming! Travis Barker is good, but he's nowhere near Steve. Carter is maybe the guy who we can say is closest to Steve Gadd. But the problem is that with those types of musicians, you just can't say "He's better than this one"

They are both on a freakishly high level and can't be compared. It's just a matter of opinion, and this is yours and I respect that. But don't say "He sucks"

  • Now I notice that you aint even a drummer.

Try fuckin playing before you start talkin out your ass.

  • travis barker is a good drummer he plays loud! and fast, thats it lol, i dont like his drum fills its all fast single strokes...

Steve Gadd is really good you should check out his groove in the song 50 ways to leave ur lover, now thats groove!

  • You stupid fuck

  • i just can't fucking believe you just said travis barker in the same sentence as portnoy, vadrucci and beauford. btw do you know what the word 'groove' actaully means? I think you are one of the reasons they invented gunpowder

  • Other drummers study Gadd. I have never taken a class, or been taught, or told to study anything from Travis Barker. Barker probably studied Gadd at some time.

  • Dick.

  • LOL, seems you've never understood the meaning of the word GROOVE. Look it up, feel it.

  • damn right! word! ;D

  • you have no idea of what drumming is all about, do you?

  • he is the God Of Drums !!! realy good at playing jazz

  • Steve Gadd - SMOOOOVVVE

  • he continues to play at the end, is there anywhere you can find the whole video.

  • What a powerful groove. It makes me think of somebody getting sacrificed to King Kong, lol.

  • A true master of the highest order

  • Is he using a piccolo snare?

I cant imagine any other way to get that tight of a set snare sound.

  • it looks like his signature snare (has regular sizes) and he's playing towards the edge, that'll make a difference as well I guess, but i'm not a pro in how to get sounds out of drums

  • It SHOULD be a signature snare. I've never heard a snare that sounds like his.

  • DEF not a piccolo, he has his snare tuned relatavely low though, if you hear other video where the snares are turned off, its low

  • @zeppelinfreak51 Are you kidding me? That snare is tuned really low.

  • @zeppelinfreak51 you can get a near-marching snare tightness with a normal snare, you just have to tighten the SHIT out of it, or have lugs that allow you to tighten it even more than normal

  • @zeppelinfreak51 He is also hitting rimshots in a very large room (reverb).

  • @zeppelinfreak51 no way it could be anything from the heads to the sticks hes using. definitely not a piccolo cause of the depth

  • @zeppelinfreak51 He has a signature snare drum that is a metal shell, so the head must be tuned very tight. Our school has a Steve Gadd signature drum.

  • lol i use his signature sticks, i luv e'm, im a metal drummer but i love his jazz sticks there light for good fill ins. I got mine at columbus percussion, in ohio

  • I reckon he might've done some dope back in his early years, thats just my guess, but then again, a lot of drummers are into the weed thing

  • Does Steve gadd smoke weed?

  • I think he was high in this vid. Still good, just really high.

  • I was there. He was definitely not high.

  • he couldn't play that well if he was stoned.

  • pro

  • ummm was I the only one that heard that bass??? That was one fat bassound

  • that has to be one of the best snare grooves of all time.

  • it sounds so much better when his bass and snare drum are tighter. still amazing.

  • rolls are smooth as glass

  • no smooth as ice

  • his playing is so musical its just amazing

  • 01:49 is weird

  • rofl! Yes it's true! =D

  • xD I thought that I've just imagined it xD

  • That was weird the bass and the snare together like that off beat but sounded really badass

  • It's not all about de difficulty of what's been played.

It's about the Technique en the feeling..

And Steve has a good techique and the feeling en the tightness how it's played is just amazing!

  • I don't think it's simplicity at all. In fact, it's extremely challenging to play with this kind of feel and taste. So many drummers try to copy Gadd's groove and come up short. They get the notes, but not the feel. And I think he's the consumate renaissance man on drums too. Whatever the genre, he nails it. Plus, I think the difference between a good drummer and a great one is reconizability. You can hear Gadd in the first 3 notes.

  • Think for a second, Steve can play everything JR. can with no effort. JR. will never be able to play like Steve, he's blessed. Both are great drummers. And think like this, you can not compare these two together. Neither one makes mistakes, it's only about personal oppinion.

  • Royster wouldn't be what he is without these pioneers. There's no comparison, they're of a different time, but ask Royster himself and he wouldn't even go there. He knows. Much respect to Gadd and Royster and any of the top creative drumming talents, they bring shape to the rhythm.

  • One of the greatest drummers ever.

This is Steve Gadd. "The Human Metronome". You will always groooooove when he's playin. Thats the best feelin. Grooooooooovin'.

  • Steve GODD*

  • steve gad is one of the best drummers alive if he were over rated why would so many greates ask to play with him

  • Steve Gadd is good, but over rated.

  • overrated, I don't think so, he plays with a real strong groove and he has played on hundreds of records, and that must have a reason

but try to convince me that he is overrated

  • I agree with that. As far as his "solidness" and technique goes, he's great. When I say over rated, the things he does are not beyond being do-able, however, he makes an effort to play in the pocket unlike many drummers. But I'm glad you gave your input, it's good to find educated people that know what they are talking about.

  • But I think however that it's his creativity that makes him one of the best drummers since it can be easy to copy him but difficult to come up with those things (see 50 ways)

  • That is true. I also think that his simplicity is what makes him one of the best drummers, too. What you don't do is just as important as what you do.

  • HERE HERE!!! So many drummers have absolutely NO understanding of the "less is more" approach. It's like they were never taught what a "rest" is. I feel the "play every lick and chop you have ever learned in 8 bars" approach is neat technique wise, but usually lacks feeling, soul and overall groove. And lets face it.....the main job of a drummer is to bring forth the groove:)

  • depends on what that said drummer plays, but still, amen to that!

  • you are over crazy

  • What are you talking about?

  • Steve gadd ( i think) has got to be one of the nest known drummers in the world.

  • Very Cool.

  • Amazing

  • cool

  • I am a longtime fan of Steve Gadd, this solo is a definite must for my favourites. And he is nice, with it!

  • Steve gadd is wonderful
