  • weigh the atrocites of war against the extermination of terrorism. I feel for this guy, I really do. he's absolutely right, this war has violated laws and freedoms. Then again, we've never faced a threat like the one we are now. we don't quite know how to handle and enemy with no state, no color, no identity, really. this country will learn from the painful experience that is the iraq war.

  • Obama succeeded in diverting people's attention to the fact that he is picking up Bush's failed policies and promoting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan....

Now, the bankers and corporate corruption is the center of attention.. and Iraq War and its victims are fading away...

But our Savior and beloved Cheerleader, Obama, will get it right... 2 wars, recession, 1 war in Pakistan brewing, broken promises, but he is the 1st black president.

    Hip Hip, Hurray !!

  • Mr.Republican the onyl reaosn you would even support the war is because your taking advantage (your in the ARMY) of the trillions of dollars we Americans AkA tax payers waist on your sorry ass. • Here's a true American hero who fulfills his oath to uphold the Consitution. As a U.S. Army veteran of the first Gulf War (Desert Storm 1991), I salute you!

  • @VoiceOverBerlin I salute you too voiceoverberlin..

  • He's braver than you.

  • Your not a Republican your just as liberal as the worst of them MR.Republican! Can't stand you Republicans pretneding to be conservative! why would you support our government at all we're Republicans goddamit we want less government we should be commenign thsi yuong man goddamn plz don't come on here and tell me your Republican when yuor a goddamn stinknig liberal demcorat!

this yuong man is doing good work, get his liberla ass outte the army i commend you!

  • wow dude, 10 grammar or spelling errors that's ridiculous.

While the language in your comment resembles that of a middle schooler, i'm still going to respond.

It seems as if you believe that by supporting the War on Terror makes me a "goddamn stinknig liberal decorat" (in your words).

While I appreciate that viewpoint, it doesn't agree with the Republican platform.

  • Not true you asshole, i'm a Republican i know the goddamn muther fuknig platform! Platform says to keep my goddamn money. I don't want my money being spent on a goddamn war that an't happening in my backyard. Spending it on some retard, I'm a gun owner SIR we have the right to protect ourself and goddamn I'll fight any war that's in my backyard. It be way more cost effective to fight the war in our back yard SIR. Just because I got a par and you don't Mr.Republican. Get a gun protect yourself!

  • Republicans are generally against big government spending, with a few exceptions. One of those exceptions is national defense.

If you are against all government spending, including military spending, that makes you a libertarian.

This is probably all over your head, but for some reason I felt the need to respond to your stupid, unorganized banter.

By the way, I'll be commissioned as a US Army officer in 2012.

  • your a goddamn liberal bitch and stupid as hell, it's way more rational and cost effective to be fighting war on your own turf, unless ur sometype of pussy. You even supprot gun rights Mr.Republican... You are by far a liberal probably more liberal than liberals I've ever seen so GTFO and joni the Democrats you traitor...

  • I agree this man is bravior than this fagget that called him a coward GTFO!

  • This is just nonsense. We should abandon Iraq and let it fall into civil war.

  • Wouldn't the smart thing, and right thing, be that you would have resigned sometime after the Iraq war started? Why wait 3 years, drawing officer pay, while a war that you thought was illegal went on? And did you even know that since July, 2003, UN resolutions authorized the international military force? By that time, there was no Iraqi government and the UN knew that the international forces were the only things preventing a full civil war.

  • When he dies I hope they drape an Iraqi flag over his casket and incinerate this worthless coward.

  • Patriotism is a dark and demanding obligation to take the most serious possible steps and undergo the most serious kinds of personal risks in defence of this freedom, that is our natural right. This universal challenge that always included the demand for self correction, must always be unto ourselves. To face the national mirror with open eyes and not fail to be humble.

    Naomi Wolf

Semper Fi 1st Lt. Ehren Watada

    SGT USMC 0300

  • This coward is a disgrace to his uniform and all the brave men and women who fought and died before him. If he wanted to deal in politics, he should have run for office, not joined the military.

This asshole owes me and every other American taxpayer money. We could have trained a real man to be an officer, instead we payed for a pussy. He should be exiled to Pussy Island with all the other pussies.

  • watada is one of those self-serving, whiny, politically correct wussies, who wants his 15 minutes of fame. Why did he join the VOLUNTEER Army. Did he even serve in Iraq? He goes with whatever way the popular politically correct wind is blowing. I respect those who have sincere convictions against the war, but not who just get on the "whatever's popular bandwagon" so they can toot their horn with the rest of the herd.

  • Hey, man, you're quite good-looking!

  • I respect him more than that Retard Bush

  • LOL you are, of course, typing this from the desert sands of Iraq, right?

Otherwise, that means you;re clearly a hypocrite.

  • @MikieNes

you cant sign up for the army and then not fight. thats faggery. if this shit goes on, there will be a coup in america, and listen up:radical gay people who try to impose their marriage on us, radical socialists and useless college professor intellectuals, who contribute nothing to society except their scathing tounges - will be committed to re-education camps. the more stubborn of them will be massacred.

  • Your flag is backwards, dude.

  • what?!?

dude, put down the crack pipe.

  • No... you put down YOUR crack pipe, quit being ignorant and read the Army Regulation 670-1.

  • God Bless you, Lt. Watada.

  • A breach of IN-TER-NA-TIO-NAL law. Say it with me now!

  • He speaks sort of slow and keeps having to look down so conspicuously...

  • he's probably reading the speech, and talking slow gives emphasis... but I'm sure you already noticed that... or maybe not...

  • It just makes him sound dumber and takes longer for us to get the message.

  • that's subjective... it's only your opinion, legitimate but your opinion, it's what it sounds like to you... the message is the same, it'll not change what no matter if he says it slowly or fast and that's what important and what (in my opinion) you should focus on, the message... as I said, it's subjective, I liked it...

  • Robert M. Gates, Sec of Defense Address: Air Force Academy 6/30/07 There is only one way to conduct yourself in this world -- only one way to remain always above reproach. For a real leader, the elements of personal virtue -- self-reliance, self-control, honor, truthfulness, morality -- are absolute...Even when doing what is right may require sacrificing personal allegiances and friendships for professional duty and ethics -- for personal honor.

  • The true definition of an American hero. Thank you Lt. Watada for demonstrating what it means to be a real patriot of this country in upholding and honoring its constitution.

  • all about the oil, thick american poptarts

  • I agree, this makes me ashamed to be Japanese American. When you volunteer to join the MILITARY...you honestly think you can pick and choose which wars to fight?? It's sad how's he trying to be a big a hero from this.

  • You are a great man, Lt. Watada.

  • Lt. Ehren Watada, you have my respect

  • idiota!

  • Oh, you mean the Japanese Americans who were unjustly incarcerated in camps by our gov't? Or the 442d Regimental Combat Team of WW2 who were fighting a LEGITIMATE war that was WORTH fighting, as opposed to an illegal occupation?

A lot of you seem to be advocating the Nuremburg Defense: "I was only following orders"

  • brave man.

  • top fella , if you ever fancy a pint come to new zeland i will buy you a drink. well done

  • so, if President Bush ordered you to kill women and children in the name of defending our freedom, would you do it? of course you would

  • Blue Falcon all the way, doesn't matter LT's are useless anyways.

  • In addition, having served in Iraq, I can say unequivocally, that the "wholesale slaughter" he talks about is imaginary.

I'll not speculate about what his motives really are but if they were what he claimed he'd speak with more specifics and fewer platitudes and catch phrases.

  • well, the international team of expert physicians in the globally-respected Lancet would disagree with you. They did the most thorough and accruate survey in Iraq, and conclued over a half million civilian Iraqis - mostly children - have been killed during the present occupation.

You're not gonna see much tucked in the Green Zone every night.

  • Are there not clear enough examples in history of when following orders would have not been the right thing? Why should blind obedience be held as the highest principle with none transcending it? An army may not work if soldiers fail to follow orders, but IF the ends or means they are ordered to deploy are folly, successfully carrying out such orders is not the ultimate good. Is this not so?

  • I find it telling that he fails, entirely, to cite exactly which laws are being broken by the war. I doubt he has any idea what laws he would have to point to. He gives me the impression that he's mouthing somebody else's lines.

  • Maybe so. Still, I would argue that the more important question is whether or not there are actually good international laws being broken; isn't that the heart of the point? Is America now leading or mis-leading the world by her/our example? Specifically as relates to preemptive/preventative war and based on bad disuse of intelligence.

  • except that he's not. He offered to go to afghanistan instead.

  • If I remember correctly, he cited the Nuremburg trials.

  • hey mackdan, he took the oath under the deceit of justice. He had the courage to stand up for himself and refuse to go back when he realised that what he was now being forced to do is illegal and immoral. I think that is a better thing to do than to be bound by your past decisions.

  • BRAVE and COMMENDABLE. bravo, you truly are an officer and a gentleman.

  • He's brave and couragous. Finally someone has the guts to tell it like it is. Unlike white house criminals he actually is a patriot who serves not only his country but the rights of innocent iraqis who beimg slaughtered on a daily basis.

  • Is it not American to think outside the box? If this was not a characteristic of our countries premier acts of patriotism, would we not still be a colony of Britain?

  • How can an officer push what he believes in his heart aside and still be said to be truly leading anyone, let alone, those who are willing to give their lives for a cause?

If a system has rules that require someone to do something that is unjust, is it not the truly honorable thing to be willing to break such rules for the sake of it?

And should commitments to a system you see betraying itself be honored?

  • Im an Army lieutenant and I know that soldiers universally agree that Watada is completely wrong. We all took an oath to protect the Constitution and follow the orders of our commanders and our president. Watada, Michaelkeasler, myself, and all soldiers must do our duty no matter who is the President. What he has done is utterly shameful.

  • Take your own advice, protecting the consitution you aren't (Patriot act, death of habius corpus-Military Comissions Act, Spying on Americans, Corporate fascism). You are however protecting Big OIL and defense contractors for a nice little profit by the subjugation of Iraq.

  • Asking to serve in Afghanistan instead is shameful?!?

  • Ah, if it doesn't, and things continue along their present course, you're going to have a rather rude epiphany in the not-too-distant future. The US is going to be a distinctly... different... sort of place to live. And I guarantee you won't like what the Bush cabal have in store for you, should they fully succeed in their ambitions.

But, of course, by then it'll be much, much too late for you to do anything but succumb quietly to your new fate. Enjoy. You bought it. You eat it.

  • I'll believe that when I see it. When it happens you can come back here and tell me "I told you so."

  • He should be charged immediately with Subversion and given the death penalty. Yes, I'm a United States Army Noncommissioned Officer, a veteran of 12 years SERVICE. If the war was so unlawful, why isn't Bush in jail or on trial? Because this "officer" is yellow-tailed pansy with a wide stripe down his back.

  • Bush isn't on trial because the Republicans have seized control of all three branches of American government.

But don't worry -- John Conyers and other congressional leaders are working on seeing justice served. May happen sooner than you think. ;-)

  • A very tough decision. Important ones are usually wrought with conflicting viewpoints and other challenges. I will say this, I respect the LT for acting according to his conscience.

  • Finally, a Lieutenant with the balls to do what's right.

  • As I stated, politics and personal views are to be put aside when making decisions to lead soldiers.

  • The person asked to be sent to Afghanistan instead of Iraq because he felt the war in Iraq was illegitimate He would have gladly fulfilled his obligation to his fellow soldier and country in Afghanistan. While some soldiers are fighting the war in Iraq other soldiers are risking their lives to protect American Business and company who will potentially make millions from the war.

  • As an Army Officer, I feel obligated to comment. Although the commitment he exhibits for his principles is admirable, his total lack of concern for his men and fellow soldiers is pathetic. He displays a cowardly negligence to fulfill his duty to the men he is charged to lead in battle. Whether you view the war as right or wrong, you must understand that soldiers lay down their own personal beliefs to lead men in combat against those who wish to harm Americans. He is an embarrassment to the Army.

  • I respectfully disagree. He is fulfilling his highest duty, that of upholding the Constitution, which has narrowly succeeded in protecting us from falling into a dictatorship under Herr Boosch

  • What's more, he volunteered to serve in Afghanistan instead.

  • Soldiers go to war to protect their countries, not to commit war crimes. This was a tough decision.

  • 911 WAS AN INSIDE JOB, AND IF YOU HAVENT FIGURED THAT ONE OUT YOUR HEAD IS UP YOUR A$$.. WAKE UP BEFORE YOUR SENT TO DIE FOR A GLOBALIST AGENDA OF WORLD EMPIRE... INFOWARS.COM

  • well your first comment was sane. The second one was so-so.

And this third is dripping with absolute bullshit.

  • You think that first one was sane?

  • I DO NOT SUPPORT THE ILLEGAL UNCONSTITUTIONAL OCCUPATION OF IRAQ, OR THE HORRIBLE MURDERING OF ITS POPULATION AND SOCIETY. AMERICA WAS FOUNDED ON PRICIPALS OF INTEGRITY WHICH THIS MAN OBVIOUSLY HAS...

THIS LT. SIGNED UP TO PROTECT OUR CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS, NOT TO BLINDLY FOLLOW DICTATORS INTO A COUNTRY TO MURDER AND OCCUPY ITS INNOCENT CITIZENS.

  • THIS IS A REAL AMERICAN...MOST OF YOU DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS! IF YOU DONT RECOGNIZE A REAL AMERICAN WHEN YOU SEE ONE, THEN YOU MUST NOT BE ONE YOURSELF.

  • I have considered that the left attacks rather than listens. The man is stating his opinion as to why he will not serve afet he volunteered knowing what was his duty. This is a calculation of the Winter Soldier effect. Your views are pre ordained to be footnotes of history. Whats next? Driving our two party system into such dissarray that it becomes a constitutional republic? Oh yeah, have fun in Charlies Chickenshack Watada!

  • He asked to be stationed in Afghanistan instead - a conflict he doesn't think is immoral.

  • Rot

  • MadMonk:

You are, of course, writing your comments from the desert sands of Iraq. Otherwise you're what they call a complete hypocrite as well as a coward. It's your war -- YOU fight it, prick!

  • He signed up for the military buddy. He took and oath. Now he's running away when his country is calling him.

  • No he is not fuck off.

  • How is he not? Explain.

  • He's not running away he unlike you doesnt do what everybody else tells him to do he noticed that this war is immoral and illigel. If america declared war why are they still there?

  • Declared victory I meant.

  • He's just using that as an excuse the run away from his duty and he will receive the consequences for his actions.

  • whew, finally an honest, brave young man in the military
