In all honestly, the original scene with Mitchum was more realistic. Here it is like DeNirois superhuman and immune to physical pain. In the original, it just looked like Mitchum was a tough thug who knew how to handle himself.
@dkupke its a movie man why do u allllllllllllll wine about such little things man i mean u see al the fucking redicoulous movies like hary potter i mean that movie aint realistic for shit but still its a money making machine,, i still think this is the best scene in the whole movie realistic or not its the best
@XxPurEEv1LxX I'm kind of a classic movie lover. DeNiro was incredible in this, don't get me wrong-this is honestly one of the scariest movies I've ever seen because the overall scenario is very real, and it makes you wonder what you would do in such a situation. But I tend to dislike remakes, so the original with Mitchum and Peck remains tops over this one for me.
@Hybridnight Its not supposed to be that realistic, its supposed to show that with his suffering in prison that he has become more then a man. Maybe you should watch the movie before you write such a stupid comment.
Worst movie critique ever....the writing is purile, the composition half-baked....also,how the fuck do you come up with this crap?....pff.....Scorsese is a genuis.
@Hybridnight clerly u have never been in a fight befor becos if u had u wood no that people get hit in fights befor thay win wen ur fighting 2 to 4 people i no what am talking about becos ive been ther and won but its painfull and i wood rekamend avioding that sitchoason if u can guys tust me
@Hybridnight When its time to fight and defend yourself because you feel they are trying to kill you, you become something wild and vicious and killer instinct and survival take over your mind and body regardless of the situation without even knowing it. It's as though you black out and go into another realm. Most of the time after a fight, you don't even know what you truly did to the other guy, or what may have been done to you. The 3 in this scene didnt go all out brutal on him..big mistake!
Those 3 guys were simple thugs. Tough but no biggie. Max cady is a psychopathic killer, hardened by prison and highly intelligent. They would be no match for him :)
I became capable of getting this operating perfectly by means of roulettecash!org, My spouse and i was in fact doubtful at first, yet they will permit us make use of the software package for no cost.
As over the top as DeNiro was in this movie, it was truly frightening because you could not help but put yourself in they're shoes: what would you do, how desperate would you get, and to what lengths would you be willing to go if this lunatic came into you're life and just would not go away?
yeah ya might get away with that if your strong. he only took a couple to the head when he went down they only got his back if your strong you could recover and do that
@womblewandering well look at it logically they were short jabby type hits to the head and when you hit tensed muscle it can absorb alot of impact an awesome headbutt to the nose or the nerve type thing in your upper lip can stop you in your tracks. cady would have fought in prison more likely than not so he would have been used to it as well as building sufficient muscle and power. the dudes who attacked him were probably thug types who done it to weaker people by suprise werent used to attack
The only film character I can think of who approaches this level of animal and menacing is Frank Booth from Blue Velvet, played by the equally charismatic Dennis Hopper.
The lesson here is, always bring along a Bertrand Russell book when dealing with Max Cady....that way you'll out philosophize him....now he may beat you senseless afterwards, but at least you can out philosophize him
Silence of the Lamb and Hopkins are shit compared to this great performance by deniro. Simply amazing. I rate this piece of acting right next to the Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver). Robert Deniro is the best ever by a light year.
Nobody, and I mean nobody..I don't care if your the biggest bad-ass on the block...would get up after being beaten down with pipes and a motor cycle chain...Nobody.
@WiseGuy5674 Depends on how hard you were hit and where you were hit exactly, however when your in a major adreneline rush like these guys were, youd be able to do anything in that moment.. obviously the pain would come afterwords..
@WiseGuy5674 Think about this, he was in prison, where he probably got exposed to worse things every day then just brutal beatings. Also, the man is obviously sick in the head, he might actual like getting hit.
@WiseGuy5674 You got that right! lol. I guess its true what they say, prison does make an animal out of you. Robert De Niro is one of my favorite actors, my favorite part in this scene is when he says; "Counselor?" lol I don't know I find it funny, I guess its just the way he says it.
@WiseGuy5674 De Niro was very meticulous with ensuring authenticity in this role. He even took great measures to ensure that the idea of a man being strapped beneath a car as it drives and being unscathed was authentic. So I'm sure he probably did some research to make sure that a man could be beaten with pipes and chains and end up still standing. Just my guess though.
@LuthorRequiem deniro even let his dentist to ruined his teeth for the sake of his character and the movie,,and restore it afterwards. thats how professional he is.
@WiseGuy5674 you have to see the movie ,, to know why he can take that kind of a beating,,, ROBERT DENIRO is the best actor of all time! and deniro movies are the bests!!!
Chuck Norris was beaten up by Hulk Hogan, the Rock, Power Rangers, the Black Night (The dark night failed to win, sadly), and many others. He was even beaten by an oar.
If you click for more info on the video it lists all his movies. I know he's done alot of movies but I never realised how many until I saw a list of all of them!
mrbriscoe2001 - while I would agree that SotL was a better all-around movie than Cape Fear, I have a hard time believing there weren't better ones that year that were overlooked in the awards. I don't view either as a particularly good movie, but more as psycho thriller vehicles which relied more on acting and cinematography than plot cohesiveness and storyline. What I really disagree with is that DeNiro wasn't more impressive as Max Cady than Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter.
@levar1979 yes he got an oscar nomination for this film....i cant remember who won best actor that year, but i would have certainly have gave it to De Niro
Cape Fear is really brilliant Thriller with great acting. Robert De Niro showed really superb emotions. The same with Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis.
Freak'in awesome! Robert De Niro is the man! He plays in some great movies, Jackie Brown, this one, Taxi driver, Casino, Good Fellas. What a great body he had in this movie-oh well I can care less about the tattoes.
Will you two pussies shut the fuck up! Fuckin internet fags--acting hard on the internet. I hope you two do meet, fight, then get thrown in jail together.
De Niro is far and away the greatest actor of hsi generation. How could ANYONE vote for Hopkins over this masterpiece. Different to the original yes but by no means the lesser movie.
You do realise the violence is only dramatised. I think most 14 year olds can tell the difference. Well, unless they have lived in a cave all their lives.
zapkvr: the rape scene is over the top;biting a piece of the woman's face off......really uninspired filmmaking....and a terrible thing to show to a child
@mrbriscoe2001 Actually, they based the biting-rape scene on an actual rape that occurred. You say it's a "terrible thing to show a child". Well here are two counter arguments if you'll indulge me: 1.) This movie is rated R and is in no way meant to be a film "to show to a child", and 2.) Even if you did show it to a child, it would be a good warning about the dangerous people in this world. To raise a child to be unaware of how messed up the world is could land them in a similar situation.
@LuthorRequiem Rockmeister said he enjoyed watching the movie with his 14 year old son;that was the "showing to a child reference".secondly,I think there are less extreme ways of showing your child the dangerousness of the world.thqn watching this really bad movie..Deniro's a good villain..but this isnt up to Scorsese's .standards....
If you look closely (or freeze the video) you can see that the guy in the blue hoodie who grabs Max from behind is actually carrying a wooden club or stick. But later when Max knocks it out of his hands and it falls to the ground it has turned into a piece of metal pipe, as evidenced by the metallic clang it makes. Just a small little glitch in a truly remarkable theatrical achievement. How did DeNiro not win an Oscar for this performance?
Silence of the Lambs is so superior t this Cape Fear version in every way..no comparison;I don't even think Scorsese is proud of this film..Desperately violent,as if he had to up the shock value of the original .The Rape Scene is just grotesque.
It wasa great movie, and De Niro did a great job, but this fight scene was kinda tame. It wasn't really a fight scene at all actually; just 3 idiots softly tapping Cady.
Then Cady doing likewise, but for some reason the other 3 are more sensitive to pain.
Anyways a solid hand to hand fight would have been more entertaining.
its funny how scenes like these actually teach you how to be a better criminal. if they hit his ribs more when he was bent down he wouldn't have been able to get up....of course on the other hand this is just a movie and i have a hard time imagining how most guys could withstand such a beating. either way whenever i watch this movie i always shout "hit his damn ribs!"
I remember when this happened to me once, accept one of the guys had an axe, I basically just took him out first with a swift leg break, and knocked the other 7 out cold, one of them hit me over the head so hard with a golf club, the club bent, but I was not phased.
..only Deniro could pull off that dialog lol.. such a badd ass

Yeah, what a joke that was. Silence of the Lambs has to be the worst Oscar winner ever.
ostenrt 2 years ago
so right. Worse, they named him the best villian of all in cinema history. He's isn't that scary. He was more like a sterotype.
QueenKnightofHearts 2 years ago
