You made a good video. I sent an Email to V-Sharp suggesting they make a model of the Classic using steel for all parts. On second thought, I believe the guides would have to be polymer, but the upper & lower bushings should be steel. Add a little grease to the bearing surface and this should work fine and not brake as mine did. It was dropped from a table by one of my boys and 1 upper and 1 lower bushing broke. Classic needs adjustable tension like the new one.
It severely scratches the blade on the side facing the plastic guide.
The reason is that during sharpening, particle originated from the blades edge (and probably the rods) accumulate on the plastic guide and act as sand paper!
The ONLY way to avoid this is to remove the guide all together and try and keep the blade perpendicular as possible during sharpening.
Despite this flaw, it is a good product it does sharpen very well fast and accurate.
1, you wouldnt cut into metal, its not like you are going at light speed
2. Severe damage? How fast are you going? LOL, please dude, it wouldnt cause any damage at all in the least, at most you would just glance off it and be aligned right.
Again, how fast and with how much force are you goin to do this with?
Seriously dude, if you where doing it so fast and with so much force that you would hit the metal that hard, then you shouldnt be even owning a knife.
it doesn't take that much to chip S30v.... and with lower quality soft blades, they will lose their edge. "severe" was definitely the wrong word. more like "some." im not talking about taking a chunk out of your blade, just enough to mess the edge up.
And I dont think you understand how this works, as I, the person who has them, would rather have metal than plastic, because even S30V, if you managed to chip your blade with a metal guide, then you dont deserve to sharpen your own knives, much less own them.
I am telling you as the person who owns them, that it wouldnt happen unless you where stupid and doing it way wrong.
I personally enjoy sharpening with stones, but for the same amount of time it takes to get it sharp with stones, I could sharpen 10 knives already (including steeling)
So yea, maybe you should, only if you use your knives and they get dull often! (which I am guessing, yes you do!)
Go by TLI and I am sure he will let you try it out.
I hear ya, Man... My philosophy is always been to try and keep 'em sharp and not let 'em get dull as much as possible. Always easier to put a fine edge on a slightly worn edge, rather then trying to put an edge back on a dull blade...
Stones for the bigger tasks, and the Spyderco sharpener for touch-ups have been my mainstay... but I do like the ease of use of this one... But there's something relaxing about using stones, even if it does take longer, ya know?
Yea man, I totally get that, I love to break out the Arkansas stones and sharpen and hone a blade, especially when I have time to kill, makes me feel like I am getting it done right!
But, when I only have a few minutes, always turn to the Warthog.
Would be interested in seeing your opinions on the Spydie VS Warthog....
you have way to much time on your hands

The sharpener has a major flaw:
It severely scratches the blade on the side facing the plastic guide.
The reason is that during sharpening, particle originated from the blades edge (and probably the rods) accumulate on the plastic guide and act as sand paper!
The ONLY way to avoid this is to remove the guide all together and try and keep the blade perpendicular as possible during sharpening.

Yea I put that as one of the minus's on the description. Never the less, I am glad that you like it! DId you get the XE or the original?
QuietBearr 2 years ago
The XE.
I think there is another way to avoid those starches: to put a protective tape on that side of the blade.
Again, without it, it will seriously scratch the finish of the entire blade

Thats a good suggestion!

i pretty sure i would rather accidentally cut into plastic, than metal. the metal would cause severe damage to your blade...

Severe damage, lol

I mean, if you accidentally hit the metal directly, it would chip/bend the edge. but plastic wouldnt do much damage to it.

And, it takes more than you think to chip S30V I guess, especially any S30V that has been heat treated well.
