Contra is Amazing too good for it's time. 2nd level was my favorite and the music rocks. long live contra, but also i am playing call of duty modern warfare 2. playing online against other people instead of the computer is pure genius and u can talk and work with your team. long live any video games, what a great anti drug.

r u kidding me? i got this game for my 7th birthday back in '89!!! even back then & today, i still run through this game without the konami code. this shows how spoiled kids are when they have save points, internet, hacks, auto aim... list goes on, this was the bench mark for platform shooters, now Super C... thats a 10/10 for difficulty

Where's the difficulty nowadays!? While yes, there are the real Hardcore Games of my youth, you can only play them so many times. There needs to be more games like "Demon's Souls" out nowadays! That game is one of the few modern games that gave me the same "practice till your thumbs are raw" experience that Contra or Battletoads would.

One of the best things about Contra is the challenge. When you die, you'll have to do everything again. You must learn everything you've done and that makes you a better gamer in the end.
Halo how ever is just to easy. Yes, legendry is hard but infinite lives and check points takes most of the challenge away. You can just focus on getting to the next check point and you don't have to remember any thing of what you've done before.
he opinion is kind of interesting though. honestly, he has a good point about contra. personally i knew very few people when i was his age that could beat contra without using the konami code to unlock more lives. not that i don't love contra, but if you look at it from a modern perspective it does seem a little overly hard for no apparent reason. same thing with contra hard corps. the japanese version has a health bar which was removed from the usa version for some unknown reason.

Could it be the hard challenge and fascination for overcoming obstacles in the hard games of old? Nowadays, overcoming obstacles is easy. A hard game today takes so much less effort to learn...I wonder...
Maybe today's young gamers won't be as involved in future games as long as they're this easy?
Could you hold your nose any higher? Single player games are much easier these days for sure, but multiplayer games of today have the potential of being at least as hard as classic games if not harder (when you are equally matched in multiplayer). Also, classic platformers become predictable the more you play them. Eventually you learn each levels suprises, traps, scripts, etc. and each boss you fight you overcome by learning their weaknesses.
@matt99haverkamp Well, I AM talking about single player here. Multiplayer games don't count - the sharp thinking of the human mind will always be able to match you in a game with enough practice! As long as games are balanced and have a steady learning curve, multiplayer will very naturally be as hard. But that's not what I was talking about.
And, true, practice makes perfect. You learn stages as you play, logically. But there's also principles of reflexes and quick thinking which you aquire.

@apomk2 Higher standard...I wouldn't call the gameplay of today any 'better'. It's more complex, for sure! But the real difference is that the newer gameplay is more...exploitable. It's deeper, and therefore more exploitable, and often-times easier because of that.
Contra is still an amazing game, because it's simple; the only way to beat it is to think fast and look alive. In newer games, you can most often get around things like that. Which is a shame.

I grew up with the super nintendo throughout and when I found my dads NES in the garage I cherish it even though the graphics are bad. The kid doesn't know any better since he's still young and all but hopefully when he grows up, he'll realize all that and judge a game for what it is and not by graphics which isn't everything in a game.

When I was born, Sonic and Mario were popular on the SNES and Genesis, yet my first gaming system was a PlayStation 1 with Crash Bandicoot 2-which still works and I still love to this day. But, I also appreciate how far video games have come since "back in the day" and I got Super Mario Bros. 1 as part of the GBA NES classics series when I was probably about 15. It just depends on how passionate you are about games.
and then even before that, the main games I grew up on were Sonic the Hedgehog-Sonic & Knuckles and Donkey Kong Country 1-2. I only just beat Halo 1-2 recently, and I enjoy them. Well, Halo 1's repeating areas is a turn-off, but the game to me is still fun, just like contra is fun. Contra's freaking difficult, but in my eyes that's what makes it fun-I tend to laugh at some kind of mistake I make when playing the game. And I cluster-F-bomb when I get hit with a cheap shot and lose my spread gun.
Halo 3 is lame. Contra is just a classic. But that's just the difference in generations I suppose, sad as it is. No 30 extra lives cheat? He could beat it then haha.

One of the best things about Contra is the challenge. When you die, you'll have to do everything again. You must learn everything you've done and that makes you a better gamer in the end.
Halo how ever is just to easy. Yes, legendry is hard but infinite lives and check points takes most of the challenge away. You can just focus on getting to the next check point and you don't have to remember any thing of what you've done before.

he opinion is kind of interesting though. honestly, he has a good point about contra. personally i knew very few people when i was his age that could beat contra without using the konami code to unlock more lives. not that i don't love contra, but if you look at it from a modern perspective it does seem a little overly hard for no apparent reason. same thing with contra hard corps. the japanese version has a health bar which was removed from the usa version for some unknown reason.

This makes me think. What made us gamers back in the day? All of us who grew up with games since the 80's? Could it be the hard challenge and fascination for overcoming obstacles in the hard games of old? Nowadays, overcoming obstacles is easy. A hard game today takes so much less effort to learn...I wonder...
Maybe today's young gamers won't be as involved in future games as long as they're this easy?

I'm a 12 year old boy. I enjoy Mario Bros 3 more than Mario 64, God of War, or Call of Duty. I haven't even fucking played Halo, and I don't want to.

Could you hold your nose any higher? Single player games are much easier these days for sure, but multiplayer games of today have the potential of being at least as hard as classic games if not harder (when you are equally matched in multiplayer). Also, classic platformers become predictable the more you play them. Eventually you learn each levels suprises, traps, scripts, etc. and each boss you fight you overcome by learning their weaknesses.

@matt99haverkamp Well, I AM talking about single player here. Multiplayer games don't count - the sharp thinking of the human mind will always be able to match you in a game with enough practice! As long as games are balanced and have a steady learning curve, multiplayer will very naturally be as hard. But that's not what I was talking about.
And, true, practice makes perfect. You learn stages as you play, logically. But there's also principles of reflexes and quick thinking which you aquire.

@HarpoTheVillain The difference is that today's gamers grow up with a much higher standard in terms of gameplay than we did. Games like Contra aren't a stroke of genius, they are mind numbingly simple and just artificially hard. We liked them because there wasn't anything better around.
I'm sure people were amazed back than how comfortable it was to travel in a carriage. Try asking them after letting them drive in a Benz once.

@apomk2 Higher standard...I wouldn't call the gameplay of today any 'better'. It's more complex, for sure! But the real difference is that the newer gameplay is more...exploitable. It's deeper, and therefore more exploitable, and often-times easier because of that.
Contra is still an amazing game, because it's simple; the only way to beat it is to think fast and look alive. In newer games, you can most often get around things like that. Which is a shame.

I guess the kid is bashing on this game because it's a game he didn't grow up with. I grew up with the super nintendo throughout and when I found my dads NES in the garage I cherish it even though the graphics are bad. The kid doesn't know any better since he's still young and all but hopefully when he grows up, he'll realize all that and judge a game for what it is and not by graphics which isn't everything in a game.

At least not trash-talk the kid. It's not his fault he doesn't know any better. When I was born, Sonic and Mario were popular on the SNES and Genesis, yet my first gaming system was a PlayStation 1 with Crash Bandicoot 2-which still works and I still love to this day. But, I also appreciate how far video games have come since "back in the day" and I got Super Mario Bros. 1 as part of the GBA NES classics series when I was probably about 15. It just depends on how passionate you are about games.

and then even before that, the main games I grew up on were Sonic the Hedgehog-Sonic & Knuckles and Donkey Kong Country 1-2. I only just beat Halo 1-2 recently, and I enjoy them. Well, Halo 1's repeating areas is a turn-off, but the game to me is still fun, just like contra is fun. Contra's freaking difficult, but in my eyes that's what makes it fun-I tend to laugh at some kind of mistake I make when playing the game. And I cluster-F-bomb when I get hit with a cheap shot and lose my spread gun.

I don't have my head up my ass. I play new games, too, but I am able to appreciate the older stuff because games were more original back then. I simply think that kids should know/appreciate their roots. Honestly, almost every new game has to be just like Halo, God of War, or Gears of War in order to perform well. Also, I said nothing about wanting games to stay the same. Perhaps it is you who wants the game industry to keep producing its cliché titles.

The guy in this video is a douchebag. "Do you appreciate the graphics?" What kind of question is that? Yes this is a classic and a fantastic game, but you don't need to "appreciate" the graphics. Obviously the kid is dim for comparing them to a current gen game, but the guy is dumber for asking that question. Not all kids are like this and this is a terrible video.
