  • Thanks for commenting. I'm with you on the notion that these boats are great for small ponds. The trouble arises when they get taken to the ocean off open beaches in an offshore wind, where the waves are large far out. Paddlers get pushed to them in the wind and often capsize.

  • These boats are great on small ponds . They have a place. This is a great and accurate video. While I would not get into a boat withoput a PFD the water here is frigid.

As long as you know these things are not meant for the ocean and you can get ashore they are fine.

I also don't think there is a reliable rescue that works with these unless you have a friend in the water with a boat and the skills to take her over the foredeck and teater the water out. . It will be 400 LBS then.

  • No skirt and no pfd? All of a sudden kayaksare resposible for a million deaths. Bit le not looking before crossing a busy road.

  • I say fuck 'em. If they are to stupid to read up and understand the risks then tough luck. People expect everything to be explained and provided for them and bitch and moan if something goes wrong... RTFM and learn to cope with the real world.

  • I hate recreational kayaks. They are strictly flat water boats. Good luck if you happen to flip one.

  • Trouble is... rec boats get sold at department stores (not always, but often) and no one ever talks to the new owners about floatation. What could be so hard about simply adding the bulkheads to these boats?

  • They are not badly designed kayaks- they just need flotation. I have a 14' Pamlico 140 by Wilderness Systems... equiped with a rear bulkhead and front flotation... its a great touring kayak.

  • No offence meant by this what so ever... but common sense ses that rolling without a spraydeck = water in kayak= sum amount of sinking expected, even if it should have bouyancy, when you see it doesn't you roll with a spraydeck.... its really that obvious i mean seriously!

  • looks like he's having fun

    GOOSE

  • Yeah it's called FLOATATION, and YOU CAN GET IT FOR RECREATIONAL KAYAKS!! Recreational kayaks arent bad kayaks- you have to outfit them properlly!! Duh!

  • Except that many rec boats don't include tie down points for float bags, or contain a center foam pillar that offers a minimal amount of buoyancy but impedes with fitting float bags in the bow properly.

I think the point of this video is "buyer beware." Kayak retailers need to be specific about the limits to the kayaks they sell.

Water weighs 8 lbs per gallon. Good luck getting back to shore.

  • Lol!

  • Not everyone wears a skirt, not everyone can roll, and everyone pops the skirt after a wet-exit.

  • I'm impressed that you could roll such a wide-beamed kayak. My 24" wide necky zoar sport probably wouldn't let me roll it! I bet it was kinda fun paddling that half-sunk boat though, haha.

  • Isn't that the point of a skirt.

  • Thats the point of floatation bags or bulkheads too.
